14 Oct 16. Today, TAURUS Systems GmbH, a joint venture of MBDA Deutschland GmbH (67 %) and SAAB Dynamics AB (33 %), handed over the first lot of TAURUS KEPD 350K stand–off missiles to the Republic of Korea Air Force (RoKAF). The ceremony, which saw the participation of representatives from the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) and the RoKAF, was performed at the headquarters of TAURUS Systems GmbH in Schrobenhausen, Bavaria, and marked the start of series deliveries. The TAURUS KEPD 350K programme is progressing according to plan and the integration to the Korean Air Force F-15K fighter aircraft is in the final stages. TAURUS weapon system will provide RoKAF with the most advanced stand-off and deep strike capability currently available on the world market. TAURUS KEPD 350K is an enhanced and upgraded version of the TAURUS KEPD 350 missile, which has been in service with the German Air Force since 2005 and with the Spanish Air Force since 2009. The TAURUS KEPD 350K is a modular stand-off missile system for precision strikes. The KEPD 350K missile has been designed and developed to fly through dense air defenses at a very low terrain-following level and for the engagement of high-value targets. The missile contains a highly effective dual stage warhead system, which combines excellent penetration capabilities for hard and deeply buried targets with blast-and-fragmentation capabilities against point and area targets.
13 Oct 16. BAE Systems aims Silver Bullet at US Army’s PGK requirement. BAE Systems is looking to offer its Silver Bullet 155 mm guidance kit to the US Army for a planned fiscal year (FY) 2019 competition for a next-generation precision guidance kit (PGK).
The Program Executive Office (PEO) Ammunition is working with multiple system level contractors as they continue developing the PGK, a spokesperson for the US Army’s Picatinny Arsenal told IHS Jane’s on 12 October.
“We are currently working to award multiple Defense Ordnance Technology Consortium (DOTC) contracts by the end of the first quarter of FY 2017 for concept development. We project a competitive contract award in FY 2019 to complete development and qualify the next-generation PGK,” the spokesperson said.
BAE Systems has been seeking both US and international army interest in its Silver Bullet global positioning system (GPS) guidance kit, Dave Harrold, director of precision guidance solutions at BAE Systems, said at the annual Association of the United States Army (AUSA) symposium in Washington, DC, on 5 October.
Silver Bullet is compatible with 155mm/39- and 155mm/52-calibre projectiles. It features a unique roll stabilising design that enables the carriage of a secondary guidance system for operating in a GPS-denied environment.
The kit is built by the company’s Rokar subsidiary in Israel and has gone through more than 150 test flights and has demonstrated “much better than” 20 m circular error probability (CEP), Harrold said.
He noted Silver Bullet could be “an option” should the US Army be considering a competition for a next-generation precision guidance kit.
Silver Bullet is uniquely designed in that its guidance navigation control kit is decoupled from the front, enabling the rear section to spin with the projectile while the front remains stable.
“These artillery rounds are spinning at 200 Hz as they come out of the gun. If you have your sensor spinning at the same speed you obviously have some challenges,” Harrold said. (Source: IHS Jane’s)
