30 May 24. India tests new Rudram-II air-launched missile.    India’s state-owned Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has flight tested a new version of its Rudram air-launched missile, the Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has announced.

Rudram-II was successfully fired on 29 May from an Indian Air Force (IAF) Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter aircraft off the coast of India’s eastern state of Odisha, the MoD said.

“The flight test met all the trial objectives, validating the propulsion system and control and guidance algorithm,” said the MoD.

It added that the performance of Rudram-II was validated through flight data captured by tracking instruments, including electro-optical systems, radar, and telemetry stations based at DRDO’s Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha.

The MoD described Rudram-II as an “indigenously developed, solid-propelled, air-launched missile system” intended for an air-to-surface role to “neutralise many types of enemy assets”.

It added, “Indigenous technologies developed by various DRDO laboratories have been incorporated into the missile system”.

28 May 24. Japan and the US fast-track hypersonic defence tech amid tensions.

Billion-dollar Glide Phase Interceptor Project aims to strengthen Japan’s missile defence.

Japan is collaborating with the United States to develop hypersonic interceptor technology to counter aerial threats.

This joint venture comes as Japan faces increased military pressure from North Korea’s nuclear advancements and China’s assertive posture over the contested Senkaku Islands.

In August 2023, the US and Japan announced a joint effort to combat the rising threat of hypersonic missiles in the Indo-Pacific region, unveiling the Glide Phase Interceptor (GPI) as part of their collaboration.

The Japanese government has allocated $1bn (Y157bn) to develop the Glide Phase Interceptor (GPI), a project that underlines the nation’s emphasis on enhancing its missile defence capabilities. According to GlobalData, a prominent data and analytics firm, this initiative is part of a broader plan to see Japan spending approximately $8.9bn on missile procurement over the next decade.

The GPI, designed to intercept high-speed missiles during their glide phase, represents a leap in defensive technology.

Vinayak R Kamath, Aerospace and Defense Analyst at GlobalData, highlighted the long-standing defence partnership between Japan and the US. “Japan has relied on its long-term partner, the US, for various defence equipment,” Kamath noted. “Japan will continue to engage with the country in the near future to jointly develop next-generation weapons such as the GPI.”

The implications of this development are profound. For Japan, it means staying ahead in the regional arms race, particularly in the face of North Korea’s growing missile capabilities and China’s military assertiveness. For the US, it ensures a fortified ally in a critical region, capable of countering Chinese influence and safeguarding mutual interests.

In April 2024, China’s Ministry of National Defense spokesperson, Senior Colonel Wu Qian, urged Japan to abandon its militarisation efforts, criticising Japan’s portrayal of China as its greatest strategic challenge in the 2024 Diplomatic Bluebook.

In addition to the GPI, Japan’s missile defence strategy includes procuring a range of interceptor missiles from the US, such as the AIM-120C-7, RIM-161D SM-3 Block-2, RIM-66 Standard, RIM-116 RAM Block 2, and RIM-174 Standard ERAM. These acquisitions are set to enhance Japan’s ability to neutralise aerial threats, from ballistic missiles to air-breathing targets.

This defence spending and development programme signals Japan’s proactive stance in securing its airspace and maritime domains.

The joint GPI project reinforces Japan’s defence posture and strengthens the US-Japan alliance, presenting a united front against common threats. In an era where hypersonic weapons are rapidly becoming a game-changer, this collaboration marks a step towards ensuring peace and stability in East Asia.

30 May 24. Army Opens New Munitions Facility. The Army has inaugurated a new modular metal parts facility in Mesquite, Texas, the Pentagon announced today.

Among an assortment of production capabilities, the Universal Artillery Projectile Lines facility will increase the Army’s ability to produce 155 mm munitions, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh told reporters during a briefing.

“The Army is spending more than a billion dollars every year to make these critical improvements, and this plant is an important example of how we are modernizing our industrial base,” Singh said.

“We are building new production lines across the country, and we are expanding our contracts with existing production facilities to increase their production speed and capacity. And we couldn’t increase our production rates without the skilled expertise of the Americans who work in these arsenals and facilities around the country,” Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth is quoted in a recent news release about the facility’s opening.

“Each time I visit a plant, I am struck by the dedication, patriotism and pride of the workers I meet; and I know that here in Mesquite, it won’t be any different,” Wormuth continued.

“The work done in these production facilities contributes directly to our nation’s defense and makes us stronger.”

The UAPL is a state-of-the-art facility that will be operated by General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems. It is equipped with long-stroke, high-tonnage forging capabilities, and will be capable of high-volume production capabilities for large-caliber metal parts, according to the release.

The UAPL will help the Army meet its modernization goals by incorporating modern manufacturing practices, high levels of automation and digital data capture ability, Singh told reporters.

“Current and future Army readiness requires modernization efforts that leverage new technologies; advanced manufacturing equipment and processes; and surge capabilities to enable production at scale,” Singh said, adding that such efforts will significantly strengthen U.S. munition production capabilities and will serve as a credible deterrent to our adversaries.

30 May 24. “Jet Gun” Technology Promises Lighter High-Velocity Weapons. Wave Motion Jet Gun prototype. In a US$1.6m contract the US Army DEVCOM Armaments Center commissioned the small Washington state firm Wave Motion Launch Corporation the further development of its innovative Jet Gun technology.

This contract is directed on providing a prototype and test a version of the technology in a configuration that can be employed in tactical indirect fire roles. The focus is on demonstrating a weapon that could be utilized much as current mortars.

The unique approach of the Jet Gun differs from traditional mortars and guns is that it does not consist of a projectile placed inside a barrel. Instead, the projectile is positioned above or “on top” of a “propelling charge” that creates a jet of supersonic gas that pushes the projectile to high speeds. Without the need for a barrel that must contain the pressures of the propellent ignition significant savings can be made in the weapon’s weight.

In addition, the concept potentially allows achieving significant increases in the projectile velocity without incurring weight and size penalties of the stronger barrels necessary in current cannon. A Jet Gun weapon has the potential of not only being lighter but also much smaller. Both characteristics have major benefits not only in dismounted weapon applications such as man portable infantry weapons but in combat vehicle integrations as well.

The contract is a Phase II award under the Army’s Small Business Innovative Research program. Wave Motion previous work was under its selection in the xTech Pacific competition. The company was founded by University of Washington alumni Finn van Donkelaar (who holds the patent and CEO), James Penna (COO) and Casey Dunn.

The company had a previous US$1.3 m contract for Jet Gun development from the Office of Naval Research.

Penna explained progress on this effort, “We are still finishing the contract we had with the Office of Naval Research and can report that we’ve had successful tests occur under that project,”. He further indicated “Wave Motion is developing a more advanced version of the Jet Gun that creates longer jets using solid entrained particles to extend the acceleration path for projectiles to potentially hundreds of times the length of the launcher system.”

The potential capability of both achieving higher projectile velocities which can particularly translate to longer range while also reducing weapon system weight and volume offers substantial value in tactical applications. (Source: Armada)

 

29 May 24. Kratos’ sub-sonic cruise missile emulator hits milestone. The BQM-177A aerial target had its 200th launch during operations with the AIM-9X mission in with the US Navy.

The US Navy’s next-generation Sub-Sonic Aerial Target hit a milestone last month, with the 200th launch of the BQM-177A, Kratos announced on 28 May 2024.

The role of the BQM-177A is to emulate threats in air-to-air engagements, with a particular focus in highly dynamic, high-subsonic, sea-skimming anti-ship cruise missile threat emulation. In this capacity, Kratos describes the target as unmatched, and capable of speeds in excess of 0.95 Mach, with a sea-skimming altitude as low as 6.6 feet.

The launch came as part of an exercise run by Pacific Target and Marine Operations supporting the US Navy’s AIM-9X mission at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, in California on 2 April.

Steve Fendley, President of Kratos Unmanned Systems Division, commented on the milestone: “Because of its high-performance capabilities and demonstrated reliability, the BQM-177A has proven to play a crucial role in the training of today’s warfighters.”

Fendley continued: “With a global shift toward the use of drones in military applications, this platform is only becoming more relevant in the unmanned landscape of today’s battlefield. The 200th launch is an indicator of just how valuable the 177 is to executing the Navy’s objectives”.

Greg Crewse, program manager for the Navy’s Aerial Targets Program Office (PMA-208), said “The 200th launch of the BQM-177A is a significant achievement that reflects the dedication and skill of our collective team. We are committed to supporting our warfighters’ need for next-generation target threat capability and are excited to continue improving aerial target systems to ensure that our Navy is ready for any challenge.”

The aerial target is designed to meet a variety of mission requirements by incorporating an array of internal or external payloads. These including proximity scoring, and identification friend or foe (IFF), as well as a variety of countermeasures, such as passive and active radio frequency augmentation, electronic countermeasures, infrared augmentation through plume pods, chaff and flare dispensers, and towed targets.

29 May 24. Elbit Systems unveils Lightweight UT30 turret. Elbit Systems has designed a lighter-weight variant of its Unmanned Turret UT30 capable of being carried by 6×6 and even 4×4 tactical ground vehicles, Janes learnt at the Black Sea Defence and Aerospace (BSDA) 2024 exhibition held in Bucharest from 22 to 24 May.

A company spokesperson confirmed to Janes on 22 May that the Lightweight UT30 Mk 3 had already been manufactured and integrated into a 6×6 mine-resistant, ambush-protected (MRAP) vehicle and that serial deliveries were under way.

The Lightweight UT30 features the same 30×173 mm MK44 airburst munition gun and sensor payloads as Elbit’s UT30 Mk 2. Weight savings come from a new design concept as well as a reduction in protection levels, the spokesperson said, adding that the new turret weighed approximately one tonne.

The spokesperson did not disclose the customer or where live-fire drills with a Cougar 6×6 MRAP had been held.

The spokesperson also informed Janes that Elbit was exploring the possibility of integrating the Lightweight UT30 into Oshkosh Defense’s Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV), which is in service with the US Army, Marine Corps, and Air Force. Additional vehicles are operated by Brazil, Mongolia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia.

27 May 24. RoK outlines development of enhanced air-defence systems.   South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) has announced a plan to develop enhanced air-defence systems to counter missile threats from North Korea. In a press release on 29 May, DAPA said that it will initiate the development of long-range surface-to-air missile II (L-SAM II) system and medium-range surface-to-air missile Block III (M-SAM III) system in 2024. DAPA said that the L-SAM II is a high-altitude interceptor with an increased interception altitude and range compared with the L-SAM system. The L-SAM II will allow the Republic of Korea Armed Forces to be equipped with a multilayered missile defence capability that can respond to aerial threats at different altitudes in conjunction with the L-SAM and M-SAM systems, DAPA added. 27 May 24. BSDA 2024: Hanwha to set up Chunmoo user club and integrate new munitions into its launcher. Hanwha is planning to set up a user club for its K239 Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher (MRL) and integrate third-party munitions into the system, Janes learnt at the Black Sea Defense and Aerospace (BSDA) 2024 exhibition held in Bucharest from 22 to 24 May. Peter JK Bae, vice-president for business development at Hanwha Aerospace Europe, explained that this is in response to the system’s growing user base, particularly in Europe. This would operate in a similar manner to the K9 self-propelled howitzer (SPH) user club, in which representatives from the different operators of the system meet to share their experience and best practices for operating it. 27 May 24. Future Artillery 2024: Danish PULS MRL deliveries completed. Denmark has received all its Precise and Universal Launching System (PULS) multiple rocket launchers (MRLs) and its first batch of 155 mm/52 calibre Autonomous Truck Mounted Howitzer Systems (ATMOS), Janes learnt at Defence iQ’s Future Artillery 2024 conference held in Paris from 21 to 23 May. Most of the PULS munitions ordered by Denmark have also been delivered. The arrival of the first batch of ATMOS allows training to begin on one of the systems delivered. A spokesperson for the Danish Ministry of Defence’s (MoD’s) Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO) told Janes in March that 19 ATMOS were scheduled to be delivered from the first to the fourth quarter of 2024 and eight PULSs from the second quarter of 2023 to the first quarter of 2024, with a full operating capability planned for 2025. 27 May 24. BSDA 2024: ROMARM displays new NATO-calibre assault rifle. Fabrica de Arme Cugir, a subsidiary of Romania’s state-owned ROMARM holding company, displayed two configurations of its CN-22 assault rifle at the Black Sea Defense and Aerospace (BSDA) 2024 exhibition held in Bucharest between 22 and 24 May. Development of the CN-22 began in 2023 in response to a requirement from the Romanian Armed Forces for a new NATO-standard service rifle to replace its inventory of Romanian derivatives of the AK-series of assault rifles. The design leveraged work from the earlier CN-20, which was essentially an AK-series rifle modified to accept the 5.56×45 mm NATO-standard cartridge. As with the CN-20, the CN-22 is chambered for the 5.56×45 mm cartridge and its internal components are largely based on the AK gas-operated system. However, unlike the CN-20 it is configured to allow for fully ambidextrous operation and to accommodate three Picatinny rails for mounting accessories. (Source: Janes)

 

27 May 24. BSDA 2024: ROMARM develops new family of drone-dropped munitions. Carfil, a subsidiary of Romania’s state-owned ROMARM holding company, displayed a family of drone-dropped munitions at the Black Sea Defense and Aerospace (BSDA) 2024 exhibition held in Bucharest from 22 to 24 May. Based on ROMARM’s existing range of 60 mm, 81 mm, 82 mm, and 120 mm mortar bombs, the drone-dropped variants include stabilising fins manufactured from polymers to reduce their weight and different fuzes. The high-explosive (HE) warheads are unchanged. The weights of the drone-dropped variants of these munitions were not listed by Carfil, but ROMARM’s brochure lists a weight of approximately 1,500 kg for its standard 60 mm HE mortar bomb, 3,100 kg for its standard 81 mm and 82 mm HE mortar bombs, and 15 kg for its standard 120 mm mortar bomb. 27 May 24. ASELSAN Presents Korkut Anti-Aircraft Air Defense System at Black Sea Defense & Aerospace 2024. At the Black Sea Defense & Aerospace 2024 exhibition, ASELSAN, a company under the Turkish Armed Forces Foundation, introduced the KORKUT, its self-propelled anti-aircraft artillery system. This system is designed to provide effective air defense for mechanized troops and mobile units. It is equipped with a stabilized, unmanned 35mm turret capable of firing at a rate of 2 x 550 rounds per minute. This capability allows for firing while in motion, crucial for engaging modern aerial targets such as aircraft, cruise missiles, air-to-ground missiles, and drones.

The KORKUT also features an Automatic Linkless Ammunition Feeding Mechanism (ALAFM), which facilitates the simultaneous loading of two types of ammunition and allows for a change in ammunition type in less than 15 seconds. Compatible with both 35mm Airburst munitions developed by ASELSAN and conventional ammunition, the KORKUT significantly enhances effectiveness against aerial threats.

Additionally, the KORKUT is equipped with an automatic target-tracking system that integrates a fire control radar and electro-optical sensors, facilitating effective coordination with command and control units. The command vehicle associated with the system has a radar range of 70 km and is built on the amphibious FNSS ACV-30 chassis, allowing it to navigate deep waters and rivers.

The system uses 35mm ATOM munitions, which, through a base fuse, project tungsten pellets and are programmed to explode near the target, increasing damage and thus enhancing the likelihood of neutralizing enemy aircraft.

Entered into service in 2016 and used in various contexts, including the Libyan Civil War and Turkish military interventions, the KORKUT has been produced by ASELSAN and FNSS. To date, 13 systems have been constructed, with 40 units ordered by the Turkish Armed Forces, with delivery expected to be completed by 2022. The presence of KORKUT at the Black Sea Defense & Aerospace 2024 highlights ASELSAN’s commitment to innovation in defense and its growing adoption by armed forces worldwide, affirming ASELSAN’s role as a leader in ground defense technologies.

Moreover, ASELSAN has strengthened its presence in Romania and more broadly in Eastern Europe by establishing strategic partnerships and opening regional offices to better meet the specific needs of these markets. 27 May 24. South Korea completes development of long-range SAM system. South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) has completed the development of its long-range surface-to-air missile (L-SAM) system, the country’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) said on 27 May. According to the MND, the L-SAM fulfilled its “technical development goals and was judged suitable for combat” in a recent DAPA test on the system. The production of the L-SAM will initiate in 2025, and the system is scheduled to be deployed to the military in the late 2020s, the MND said. DAPA subsidiary Agency for Defense Development (ADD) has been developing the L-SAM with local military technology firm LIG Nex1 since 2019. (Source: Janes)

 

27 May 24. On the occasion of this year’s Future Artillery Conference in Paris, KNDS Deutschland and General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) are presenting AGM on Piranha Heavy Mission Carrier. The jointly developed solution combines the fully automated, unmanned 155 mm (cal. 52) artillery gun module (AGM) from KNDS Deutschland with the recently introduced PIRANHA HMC from GDELS.

With a gross vehicle weight of up to 40t and a turning circle of less than 18m, thanks to the four-axle steering, AGM on PIRANHA HMC combines outstanding tactical mobility with superior artillery firepower. AGM on PIRANHA HMC can be operated by a crew of two people without any constraints. The vehicle offers sufficient space for an optional third crew member (2+1), or alternatively for additional storage space. The effective azimuth of the AGM integrated on the PIRANHA is 360° and can be fired on the move. Thanks to its robust 10×10 multi-link chassis, no vertical prop-ups are required for firing, as is the case with other conventional wheeled howitzers. The AGM offers comprehensive autonomy of the entire system in command, navigation, and fire control as well as completely new operational options thanks to its system-related stability. The decisive factor in reducing the workload for the crew is the consistent use of system-supported intelligence in conjunction with robotics. The special “Shoot & Scoot” and MRSI (Multiple Rounds Simultaneous Impact) capability as well as indirect and direct targeting against moving land and sea targets underline the system’s outstanding artillery capabilities.

With the new wheeled howitzer, two leading European system houses are continuing their cooperation that began with the DONAR artillery system on the tracked platform of the ASCOD IFV family. KNDS also offers the AGM on the 8×8 wheeled armoured vehicle BOXER, which makes it highly suitable for multinational use. With the same artillery module on the two leading wheeled armoured vehicle families of the Western world, both indirect fire support capabilities and interoperability within NATO signify a major capability enhancement. The collaboration between German-French KNDS and the European business unit of US-headquartered General Dynamics Corporation also strengthens transatlantic cooperation.

24 May 24. MoD to boost armed forces munitions production. In response to a parliamentary question from Damien Moore, Conservative MP for Southport, the Ministry of Defence has outlined a series of significant steps to enhance the combat readiness of the UK armed forces.

Leo Docherty, Minister of State for the Armed Forces, detailed the measures being taken to ensure the armed forces remain fully prepared to protect and defend the nation.

“Our Armed Forces are always ready to protect and defend the UK and we continue to meet all operational commitments, including participating in every single NATO mission,” Docherty stated.

“The Defence Command Paper 23 sets out our plan to deliver a credible warfighting force, generated and employed to protect the nation and help it prosper now and in the years to come. This plan will deliver the biggest transformation and strengthening of our national defence since the Cold War,” he added.

To support this ambitious plan, the Ministry of Defence has committed to increasing defence spending to £87 bn per year by the end of the decade. A significant portion of this budget, £10 bn, will be allocated to munitions production.

“To support this, defence spending will increase to £87 bn a year by the end of the decade. As part of this, we’re investing £10 bn in munitions production to ensure we have rapid production capacity and stockpiles of next-generation munitions,” Docherty added. (Source: UKDJ)

 

24 May 24. Hanwha Aerospace signs missile R&D contract with Romanian institute. Hanwha has signed a contract with a Romanian research institute for research into precision guided missiles. Hanwha Aerospace has entered into a research and development contract with Romania’s Elie Carafoli National Institute for Aerospace Research (INCAS).

The contract was formalised on 22nd May 2024, in Bucharest, Romania, with Mr. Kim Dong-hyun, head of Hanwha Aerospace’s land systems business group, and Ms. Adriana Ștefan, director general of INCAS. The agreement, signed on the first day of BSDA 2024, aims to enhance bilateral cooperation in weapons systems research and development.

As Romania and other post-Soviet states look to modernise their legacy inventories, partnerships with Korean companies that bring indigenous manufacture to Europe could act as a gateway, bringing critical knowledge sharing and allowing indigenous production in Romania. A similar pattern has been witnessed in Poland, where Korean companies have established offset agreements and laid essential foundations for a larger customer base in Europe.

Under the terms of the agreement, Hanwha Aerospace and INCAS will conduct joint research activities, including wind tunnel tests of precision-guided missiles. The collaboration extends to the aerospace sector, with the potential for synergies in aerospace engineering beyond land systems.

Hanwha Aerospace has expressed its intent to cooperate with Romania across various domains, including air, land, sea, and space, through joint projects.

Hanwha Aerospace is also looking to initiate industrial partnership programmes in Romania, focusing on the local production and maintenance of combat vehicles to support the modernisation of the Romanian military and industry.

INCAS, with a 75-year history in aerospace engineering, flow physics, and applied aerodynamics, is a prominent research establishment in Romania. It has participated in significant national aeronautical projects for both civil and military sectors and plays a significant role in EU policy-making for research and development under the FlightPath 2050 vision and the Horizon Europe programme.

Ștefan expressed optimism about the collaboration, stating, “We’re very happy to be collaborating with Hanwha Aerospace, and we hope to move forward to a next level based on this contract.”  Mr. Kim highlighted the importance of this partnership, describing it as a key milestone for future strategic projects. 23 May 24. France makes first firing of ASMPA-R nuclear air-launched cruise missile. In an operation simulating a nuclear raid, France, which has a first-strike nuclear policy, fired the renovated ASMPA-R missile.

France completed the first force assessment firing of its new nuclear air launched cruise missile, the upgraded medium-range air-to-ground strategic missile (ASMPA-R), on 22 May 2024.

The ASMPA-R was launched without its military payload from a Rafale B at the end of a flight “representative of a nuclear raid”, according to a release from the French Ministry of Defense.

France’s nuclear deterrence policy is unusual on a world stage where nuclear powers including the US and China emphasise the virtues of a no-first-strike policy regarding the use of nuclear weapons. In contrast to this, the French strategy includes the option of a first strike attack against non-nuclear provocation.

Sébastien Lecornu, Minister of the Armed Forces, expressed satisfaction at the successful firing, and extended congratulations to Ministry of Defence personnel and industrial partners that worked towards this goal.

Operation Durandal saw a Rafale B aircraft and an A330 Phènix overcome representative air-to-air and ground-to-air threats before firing the MBDA manufactured ASMPA-R.

The ASMPA-R project is the latest development in the lineage of air-sol moyenne portée (ASMP) missiles dedicated to France’s airborne nuclear deterrent. The ASMP, originally developed in 1986, had a range between 80 and 300 km, and used the TN 81 warhead of variable yield, between 100 and 300 kilotons of TNT. A total of 90 missiles and 80 warheads were produced by 1991, with 60 units still operational in 2001. (Source: airforce-technology.com)
