19 Oct 23. South Korea develops new extended-range shell for K9 howitzer. The South Korean metal and munition manufacturer, Poongsan, has said that it has developed a new extended-range version of its 155mm ammunition for the Hanwha Land Systems K9 self-propelled howitzer (SPH). Speaking to Janes during the Seoul International Aerospace & Defense Exhibition (ADEX) 2023, a company representative said that the 155mm extended range munition (ERM) represents a 50% increase in range compared with the company’s earlier K307 base burn/high explosive (BB/HE) shell. “The 155mm ERM has a range of 60 km, which was achieved by the use of a smaller TNT charge in comparison to the K307 munition and a strong solid-fuel propellant,” the representative said. According to information provided by Poongsan during the show, the company’s baseline projectile for the K9 howitzer (the KM107), has a weight of 41.86kg and has a maximum range of 18.8km with the powerful K677 charge. 19 Oct 23. LIG Nex1 partners with German weapon maker Diehl Defence to produce ‘IRIS-T’ missiles in S. Korea. LIG Nex1, a defense contractor in South Korea, has partnered with German weapon manufacturer Diehl Defence to establish production and maintenance infrastructure for “IRIS-T,” an air-to-air missile made by the German arms maker, in South Korea. The short-range missile is set to be integrated with South Korea’s homemade fighter jet KF-21.

Diehl Defence led the IRIS-T development project which involves members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The missile’s maximum speed is Mach 3 (3,580 kilometers per hour). The weapon equipped with an infrared imaging seeker can detect enemy aircraft at significantly greater distances than the conventional AIM-9L Sidewinder. Using its solid propellant motor and thrust-vector control, the weapon can attack targets in any direction including its enemy flying behind the aircraft.

LIG Nex1 said the company will work with Diehl Defence for the production and maintenance of the IRIS-T system in South Korea. The agreement was made on October 18 during South Korea’s major defense exhibition “ADEX.” The six-day aerospace and defense exhibition, attended by 550 companies from 35 countries, started on October 17 in Seoul’s satellite city of Seongnam.

Prior to the agreement, IRIS-T was selected for KF-21, a fighter jet made by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), the sole aircraft maker in South Korea. The homemade fighter jet was created to replace South Korea’s aging fleet of U.S.-made F-4 and F-5 fighters. According to specifications outlined by KAI, the fighter’s maximum speed is Mach 1.81 (2,234 kilometers per hour) with its range standing at 2,900 kilometers. The fighter jet was showcased to the public for the first time on October 16 during the media event for ADEX.

“We will try our best to create synergy based on the two companies’ technology and experience that place importance on research and development,” LIG Nex1 CEO Kim Ji-chan said in a statement. Beyond the domestic market, the two sides aim to set up IRIS-T missile’s production and maintenance infrastructure in other Asian markets.

19 Oct 23. China’s New CH-4-Based Strike Drone KVD002 Built for a Taiwan War. China has unveiled a new long-duration surveillance and precision strike drone, known as the KVD002, an aerial weapon that could have significant implications in the event of a conflict over Taiwan.

The newly unveiled KVD002 armed reconnaissance drone of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Army has likely participated in patrols and exercises around the island of Taiwan since 2022, identified then as the CH-4.

Shortly after the KVD002 medium altitude long endurance unmanned aerial system was displayed for the first time in public at the 6th China Helicopter Exposition held in North China’s Tianjin Municipality last week, media reports emerged to say that the KVD002 is a variant of the highly renowned CH-4 specially customized for the PLA Army.

The aerodynamic design of the KVD002 on display at the expo boasted a high resemblance to that of the CH-4, and it carried the AR-1 air-to-ground missile that was also developed by the Aerospace CH UAV company, the developer of the CH drone series, observers pointed out.

Neither the PLA Army nor the Aerospace CH UAV company have officially remarked on the relationship between the KVD002 and the CH-4 as of press time.

Since September 2022 and without the knowledge about the KVD002, the defense authority on the island of Taiwan has occasionally reported the presence of CH-4 armed reconnaissance drones during the PLA’s daily patrols and exercises around the island, which have also sometimes featured Z-10 attack helicopters and KVD001 reconnaissance drones of the PLA Army.

The CH-4 has displayed its capabilities overseas, and it was natural that it won interest from domestic users like the PLA Army, Fu Qianshao, a Chinese military aviation expert, told the Global Times on Thursday.

The KVD002 can conduct reconnaissance missions around the island of Taiwan and conduct precision strikes when necessary, Fu said.

Before the presumed commissioning of the CH-4 into the PLA Army as the KVD002, more than 200 units of the CH-4 were sold on the international market as of November 2022, Aerospace CH UAV company told the Global Times at the time.

The KVD002 has outstanding comprehensive performance, is easy to operate and maintain, can be expanded for additional missions and is capable of conducting short takeoff and landing in plateau regions, the description read. 18 Oct 23. Pakistan Conducts Successful Flight Test of Ababeel Weapon System. Pakistan on Tuesday successfully conducted the flight test of the Ababeel Weapon System, which the military said would enhance the country’s “strategic stability” and improve “deterrence”.

According to a statement issued by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Sahir Shamshad Mirza and senior officers from Strategic Plans Division and Strategic Forces Command, scientists and engineers of strategic organisations oversaw the launch.

“The test flight was aimed at re-validating various design, technical parameters and performance evaluation of different sub-systems of the weapon system,” said ISPR statement.

The military’s media wing added that the missile system is aimed at strengthening deterrence and enhancing strategic stability in the region through the operationalisation of “Full Spectrum Deterrence in the overall construct of Credible Minimum Deterrence”.

Gen Mirza lauded the “technical prowess, dedication and commitment of all those who contributed towards the successful test”.

The ISPR said that the president, prime minister and services chiefs congratulated all members of the strategic forces on the achievement.

18 Oct 23. KAL-ASD develops new Strix-like UAV. Korean Air Aerospace Division (KAL-ASD) has developed a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) as a testbed for new VTOL applications.

The company unveiled the flying prototype of the UAV (which it calls the KUS-VX) during the Seoul International Aerospace & Defense Exhibition (ADEX) 2023 held from 17 to 22 October.

The new UAV has a close resemblance to BAE Systems Australia’s Strix unmanned aircraft system (UAS). A KAL-ASD official told Janes that development of the KUS-VX began a few months ago to test the concept of VTOL operations and associated flight mechanics.

This was supported by footage of the KUS-VX aired by the company at ADEX 2023. The real-life video imagery showed the UAV conducting level flight in South Korea and subsequently conducting a vertical landing on a grassy field.

“There is no official request by the South Korean government for such technology,” the KAL-ASD official said. “However, we will be proceeding with development of the platform for larger capabilities, including combat applications. (Source: Janes)

 

18 Oct 23. KAL-ASD unveils new loitering munition. Korean Air Aerospace Division (KAL-ASD) has unveiled its new KUS-SX unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which the company said has been designed to destroy adversarial missile sites.

According to a KAL-ASD official, the new aircraft is classified as a reconnaissance and attack UAV.

Development of the KUS-SX began in early 2023, the KAL-ASD official said. “The development of the unmanned aerial vehicle was completed in just a few months as we have the core UAV technologies,” the KAL-ASD official told Janes on 18 October, at the Seoul International Aerospace & Defense Exhibition (ADEX) 2023.

The UAV was first revealed during South Korea’s 75th Armed Forces Day parade on 26 September. During the parade, the loitering munition was placed atop Kia Light Tactical Vehicles (KLTVs).

18 Oct 23. UK MoD seeking close quarter battle sight for L7A2 GPMG

The multi-million-pound programme will equip an in-line sight for the long-serving GPMG weapon system used by the British Army.

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) is seeking a close quarter battle (CQB) sighting system that can be used on the L7A2 General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) to enable operators to undertake CQB scenarios when using the GPMG weapon system.

According to a 16 October Public Information Notice (PIN), the UK MoD will bring the L7A2 CQB sight into service through the Support Weapons Enhanced Sighting System (SWESS) project. The sight, destined for British Army use, will be “in-line” and useable in all light conditions, the PIN stated.

The programme value is thought to run up to £20m ($24.37m), with a maximum of six industry vendors being invited to participate, states the MoD.

The project to procure a GPMG CQB sight began in November 2022 when the UK MoD’s Dismounted Close Combat Project Team awarded framework agreements for the following sighting system variants for use on the GPMG: SWESS Light Night Sight: Zero-light (thermal) sighting system; SWESS Light In-Line Sight: Zero to day light (thermal in line with direct view optic) sighting system; and SWESS Light Battlesight – Quick acquisition day optic.

Within the original SWESS Light Framework competitions the MoD stated industry would be invited to re-tender for the three framework agreements at periodic intervals within the seven-year contract duration. This would allow industry to make available the most up-to-date capability for the British Army, states the published PIN.

The original timeline for the CQB procurement envisaged a Dynamic Pre-Qualifier Questionnaire issuance in July 2023, followed by an invitation to tender in August. It was anticipated that evaluation of requirements using loaned trial systems would take place in September/October, with a framework award in November.

Following the outcome of the competition, the contract to deliver the system is scheduled to begin in Q1 2024, concluding in Q1 2029.

A history of the GPMG

According to the British Army, the L7A2 GPMG is a 7.62mm x 51mm belt-fed GPMG that can be used as a light weapon and in a sustained fire (SF) role.

In the SF role, mounted on a tripod and fitted with the C2 optical sight, it is fired by a two-man team grouped in a specialist machine gun platoon to provide battalion-level fire support. In SF mode, the GPMG, with a two-man crew, lays down 750 rounds-per-minute at ranges up to 1,800m.

The GPMG can be carried by foot soldiers and employed as a light machine gun (LMG). A fold-out bipod is used to support the GPMG in the LMG role. Versions of the GPMG are mounted on most British Army vehicles and some helicopters.

In service since the 1960s, the GPMG was manufactured by Manroy Engineering in the UK, which in 2017 was acquired by FN Herstal to form FNH UK, a subsidiary of Belgian weapons OEM FN Herstal.

The British Army is embarking on widespread modernisation of its infantry-carried small arms, and recently awarded a deal for a new battle rifle for the UK Special Forces and Ranger Regiment. 18 Oct 23. Canon Caesar: Sébastien Lecornu Welcomes Production Increase and Shorter Delivery Times. Visiting the KNDS site in Roanne (Loire) on Monday, October 16, the Minister of the Armed Forces was delighted with the success achieved in the transition to the war economy. Illustrating this success, the Caesar self-propelled howitzer, whose production increased from two to six units per month, while delivery times were reduced from 30 months to 15 months.

At the start of the Ukrainian conflict, in February 2022, two Caesar cannons left the KNDS workshops each month. The company is now able to assemble six every month, and intends to increase this figure to eight by the start of next year. This acceleration in production rate is the most convincing success of the war economy desired by the President of the Republic.

Sébastien Lecornu came to see himself, this Monday, October 16, on the KNDS site in Roanne (Loire). This tripling of production capacity will allow France to replace, by early 2024, the 18 Caesars sold to Ukraine to help it defend itself against Russia — a replenishment of its stock one year ahead of the initial schedule. This new production rate 9will also “continue to supply all of France’s partners who choose to turn to KNDS to equip their land forces,” rejoices the minister. In parallel with this increase in production, delivery times have been considerably reduced: from 30 months before the start of the Russian invasion, they have now fallen to only 15.

The transition to the war economy responds to the following triptych: produce more, faster and at controlled costs. Besides the Caesar, other successful examples should be noted. “Thanks to the work carried out, in particular by Nexter and Eurenco, we will be able to triple our rate of ammunition delivery to Ukraine, which will go from 1,000 shells per month in January 2023 to 3,000 by January 2024. The same effort was made for air defense munitions,” noted Sébastien Lecornu. Production of Mistral missiles produced by MBDA increased from 20 to 40 per month. The minister also praised the efforts undertaken by other companies in the defense industrial and technological base, such as Thalès which has doubled the production of radars over the past year or Dassault Aviation, which, to meet all orders at the export, is increasing its production rate from one to three Rafales per month.

More generally, the Minister of the Armed Forces also welcomed the significant efforts undertaken to modernize Army vehicles, via the Scorpion range made up of the Griffon, Jaguar and Serval wheeled armored vehicles. The 2024-2030 military programming law earmarks nearly 10 bn euros over the period to these programs. Concretely, over 200 vehicles will be produced each year by KNDS for the army. “Orders placed by the State provide visibility until 2035,” underlines Sébastien Lecornu.

The minister decorates employees

During his visit, the Minister of the Armed Forces decorated employees of the KNDS factory with the National Defense medal, silver level, in order to salute the effort of all civilians in the transition to the war economy. He thanked them for having “participated in this race against time to reduce production and delivery times”. “You have been on the front line responding to it. You had to deploy talents of adaptation and creativity,” he added to their attention, addressing them the “recognition” that France “grants” to them.

16 Oct 23. Lockheed: Ajax tank turrets programme over halfway through production. The British Army’s £5.5bn Ajax programme has been fraught with issues, but Lockheed Martin says turret production is on schedule.

The British Army’s long-running Ajax programme is gradually nearing completion, with more than half of the tank turrets having now been manufactured.

“We are just over 50% through Ajax production, but we have got about another two years of production left,” Steve Wallace, head of production operations at Lockheed Martin UK’s facility in Ampthill, Bedfordshire, told Army Technology.

While Lockheed’s production is reportedly on schedule, the Ajax programme has been hit with difficulties. Rising costs and repeated delays led to parliamentary calls for Ajax to be axed, although the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has reaffirmed its commitment to the programme.

On-site figures show that Lockheed Martin’s Ampthill site has produced 141 turrets since 2018 when the contract for 245 turrets began. This includes 32 turrets last year and 32 so far in 2023.

What is Ajax and when will it be deployed?

First commissioned by the MoD in September 2014, the Ajax programme is the biggest single order for a UK armoured vehicle in more than two decades.

Ajax was initially projected to cost $4.3bn (£3.54bn) and be completed by 2024. More recent estimations by the MoD and House of Commons say the programme will cost $5.5bn of taxpayer money and be fully operable by 2029.

General Dynamics Land Systems UK is the prime contractor, overseeing the assembly of the 589 total Ajax vehicles at its Merthyr Tydfil site in South Wales. General Dynamics told Army Technology that it has delivered 143 vehicles, with 44 already deployed by the British Army.

Each vehicle is 7.62m in length, 3.35m in width and 3m high. They travel at a maximum speed of 70kph. The MoD has touted Ajax’s all-weather operability, cutting-edge sensors and 40mm stabilised cannon as competitive military advantages.

Lockheed Martin UK is one of Ajax’s subcontractors, responsible for manufacturing 245 pivoting gun turrets as part of a $1bn agreement. General Dynamics says it has received 141 turrets to date – 62% of total production.

The current manufacturing cycle for each turret is 600 hours, which Lockheed aims to cut down to 500 hours, according to Stuart Devonshire, head of manufacturing at the Ampthill site.

A sequence of setbacks

On 20 March, Minister of Defence Procurement Alex Chalk said he “openly acknowledged the problems” the Ajax programme faces.

Chalk also announced that the MoD had resumed payments to General Dynamics, following a suspension in payments in 2021 when various design flaws emerged.

A leaked document revealed that the Ajax tanks posed safety risks to British soldiers if driven above 32kph, while excessive vibration and noise meant soldiers testing the vehicles were left with swollen joints and tinnitus.

Chalk’s update on Ajax’s continuation was met with heavy scrutiny.

A report by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on 31 March gave a full timeline of the programme’s setbacks. General Dynamics told the Committee that delays were partly caused by challenges integrating the cannon into the turret, the report said, and the MoD had selected a “technically unproven and immature 40mm cannon”.

The cannon’s integration with the turret is managed through a separate contract between General Dynamics UK and Lockheed Martin UK. Devonshire clarified that development of the turret component had matured and Lockheed’s Ampthill facility is back on schedule.

“The programme has been running for 12 years but has not delivered a single deployable vehicle to the Army,” the PAC previously told the UK House of Commons.

“Enough is enough – the MoD must fix or fail this programme before more risk to our national security and more billions of taxpayers’ money wasted,” the PAC chair Dame Meg Hillier said. “These repeated failures are putting strain on older capabilities which are overdue for replacement and are directly threatening the safety of our service people and their ability to protect the nation and meet Nato commitments.”

16 Oct 23. Poland Orders Jelcz Trucks to Carry NSM Missiles, Mobile Bridges. On October 11 this year, in Nowa Dęba, the Minister of National Defense, Mr. Mariusz Błaszczak, approved the agreement regarding the acquisition of JELCZ truck chassis for the next two contracted Maritime Missile Units (MJR).

The subject of the contract concluded between the State Treasury – Armament Agency and Jelcz sp. z o. o. is the supply of JELCZ car chassis and wheeled vehicles on which elements of the Naval Strike Missile system will be installed, which are part of the next two contracts contracted during the 21st International Defense Industry Exhibition in Kielce.

The value of the order is approximately PLN 470 m gross. Vehicle deliveries will be made in 2024-2029.

On September 5 this year, during the 31st International Defense Industry Exhibition in Kielce, an agreement was approved between the State Treasury – Armament Agency and Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace, regarding the acquisition of two more Naval Missile Units (MJR), including command vehicles, launchers and several hundred NSM anti-ship missiles. The value of the order is approximately PLN 8 bn gross, and deliveries will be made in 2026-2032.

The Naval Missile Unit is intended to combat enemy ships, protect the main Naval Bases, areas convenient for naval landings, and important military and industrial facilities located on the coast. Due to its maneuvering capabilities and high fire efficiency, the MJR plays a significant role in ensuring the freedom of operation of its own ship forces in the Baltic Sea.

The MJR is capable, in cooperation with the main naval forces of the Navy, of defending the sea coast, covering maritime communications on coastal waterways and supporting the combat activities of the Navy and Land Forces in defense operations. MJR is based on NSM system elements integrated with JELCZ chassis. Entities from the Polish defense industry will be responsible for a significant part of the supplies as part of the acquisition of two further MJRs.

16 Oct 23. Expanded strategic partnership with Korea Aerospace Industries, Ltd. to supply Airborne Laser Mine Detection System to the Republic of Korea. Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has been awarded a contract by Korea Aerospace Industries, Ltd. (KAI) to provide Airborne Laser Mine Detection System (ALMDS) solutions and technical support for the Engineering, Manufacturing and Design (EMD) phase of the Republic of Korea’s Korean Mine Countermeasures Helicopter (KMCH) program. The EMD phase is expected to be completed in 2027.

“Our strategic partnership with KAI to bring ALMDS technology to the KMCH program builds on our decades of commitment to deliver advanced solutions that support the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of National Defense,” said Janice Zilch, vice president, multi-domain command and control (MDC2) programs, Northrop Grumman.

“The mission of ALMDS is to detect, classify and localize floating and near-surface moored mines rapidly. KAI is convinced that the ALMDS integration will make a significant improvement to the Republic of Korea’s Navy mine detection capabilities. The program will also enhance our strategic partnership with Northrop Grumman in the defense domain,” said Chang-heon Han, executive vice president, rotary wing division, Korea Aerospace Industries.

ALMDS is capable of untethered day or night operations, which allow it to attain high area search rates. ALMDS also provides accurate target geo-location to support follow-on neutralization of the detected mines.

 

16 Oct 23. Lockheed Martin’s Next Generation Interceptor Program Advances Through Major Design Milestone. Lockheed Martin’s (NYSE: LMT) Next Generation Interceptor (NGI) program executed its digital All Up Round (AUR) Preliminary Design Review (PDR), in partnership with the Missile Defense Agency (MDA), on September 29. The company remains on-plan to deliver NGI on an accelerated schedule for the warfighter.

NGI is part of the MDA’s Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) system and will provide a new, advanced interceptor to protect the homeland against long range ballistic missile threats from rogue nations. During this review, the MDA assessed the NGI program’s readiness and maturity to continue into the detailed design phase, confirming that Lockheed Martin’s solution continues to meet requirements for the mission.

“I am proud of our team’s commitment to innovating with urgency to achieve expectations for this phase of the program,” said Sarah Hiza, vice president and general manager of Strategic and Missile Defense at Lockheed Martin. “With this additional confidence in our NGI design through a week-long digital review with our MDA customer, we are on track to deliver the right solution to meet the needs of the nation.”

Digital Enablement

Lockheed Martin used digital engineering and model-based engineering tools to conduct the PDR with a modern and transparent approach. These tools ultimately drive affordability within the program, as the company progresses to deliver a capable, mature, and reliable interceptor to the MDA.

The program’s digital approach enables early and frequent hardware and software testing, anchoring the PDR with lab demonstrations of flight-like engineering hardware. Some of these include validating the program’s approach to sensing threats and Lockheed Martin’s flight computer which successfully communicated to major NGI subsystems.

Path to Flight Testing and Initial Production

This latest PDR milestone means Lockheed Martin’s NGI program has progressed solidly in its design work. It will next begin procuring long-lead hardware to support manufacturing of flight test vehicles.

The company’s NGI team will now move forward toward the Critical Design Review milestone in Q3 FY2025, continuing to evaluate opportunities to accelerate schedule. During this next significant review, the MDA will assess when flight testing can begin. The first Lockheed Martin NGI is forecast for delivery to the warfighter as early as FY2027.
