05 Oct 23. Galvion demonstrates ‘Charge on the Move’ vehicle mounted soldier power solution at AUSA ’23. 05 Oct 23. Oshkosh Defense Receives Order for Additional Rogue Fires. Oshkosh Defense, LLC announced today that the Marine Corps Systems Command has placed a $39.5m order for additional Remotely Operated Ground Unit for Expeditionary Fires (ROGUE-Fires) carriers and associated kits.

Based on the Oshkosh Defense Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV), ROGUE Fires is an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) that leverages the JLTV’s extreme off-road mobility, payload capacity and Oshkosh’s advanced autonomous vehicle technologies to support Ground-Based Anti-Ship Missile (GBASM) operations. The unmanned technology associated with ROGUE Fires allows the vehicle to operate in teleoperator or leader-follower mode.

“Oshkosh Defense is committed to providing mission-critical capabilities and innovation to support the U.S. Marine Corps and their modernization plans,” said Pat Williams, chief programs officer for Oshkosh Defense. “The adaptable design of ROGUE Fires leverages next-generation technologies and allows for integration of scalable weapon system payloads to meet mission requirements.”

06 Oct 23. USAF Rolls out First B-1B Bomber with BEAST Upgrade.

7th Bomb Wing Rolls out First BEAST-Modified B-1B.

The 7th Bomb Wing’s first B-1 Embracing Agile Scheduling Team modified B-1B Lancer took its first flight September 8, 2023, from Dyess Air Force Base marking a new era of lethality for the venerable aircraft.

BEAST was designed to shorten fielding of each system, preserve aircraft availability and ensure compliance with federal government aviation directives.

“BEAST modernizes the aircraft’s avionics systems and gives it life and lethality out to 2040 and beyond,” said Col. Joshua Pope, 7th Maintenance Group commander. “I was on the Air Force Global Strike Command staff when the project started just a short time ago, so to be here now watching it is a truly impressive feat of innovation, scheduling and teamwork between the maintenance groups, the command, and the B-1B System Program Office. This truly is an all-in team effort.”

The modifications are designed to modernize the aircraft’s Identification Friend or Foe system, provide Link 16 tactical data communications capability and upgrade secure communications systems. The program also updates the aircraft’s defensive avionics system and updates its mass data storage for today’s digital environment.

“BEAST significantly enhances the lethality of the B-1B, surpassing its current capabilities,” said Col. Dan Alford, 7th Operations Group commander. “Our aircrew are excited to get their hands on this new technology that will reduce their workload and allow them to focus on combat employment of the weapon system itself.”

By collaborating with the B-1B System Program Office and the 76th Aircraft Maintenance Group, the B-1Bs will be modified during scheduled Programmed Depot Maintenance at Tinker AFB and at each main operating location – Dyess AFB and Ellsworth AFB.

“This method allows for the shortest completion time while giving each bomb wing flexibility to schedule their aircraft for modification according to their aircraft availability requirements,” said Pope. “It is the best for all organizations and ensures the B-1B is ready to fight from here.”

This modified B-1B is the first of 23 that will undergo modification at Dyess by a contract field team hired specifically for this modification. Under the current construct, all 7th BW aircraft will be completed according to plan and ready for immediate deployment, if called upon.

06 Oct 23. Slovakia Picks Poland’s Piorun and Israel’s Barak to Modernize Air Defenses. MOD to Enter into Negotiations with Poland and Israel on Very Short-Range and Medium-Range Air Defence Systems. Following the government’s approval today, the Slovak Defence Ministry can enter into negotiations to secure the first stage acquisition of air defence (AD) systems. In doing so, the MOD is acting on the recommendations of MOD subject matter experts (SMEs) for the very short-range and medium-range air defence (VSHORAD & MRAD) systems.

The MOD has been mandated to start negotiations with the Government of the Republic of Poland to prepare the G2G documents necessary to procure 36 Polish-made Piorun MANPAD sets. Similarly, the MOD is to lead negotiations with the Government of the State of Israel to procure one (1) BARAK MX mobile medium-range surface-to-air missile (MRSAM-M) system. In both cases, draft contract documents will be submitted to the government for approval before signing.

In a statement, Defence Minister Martin Sklenár said: “I want to thank the Cabinet for taking a responsible decision – a step necessary to meet the long-term Air Defence Capability requirements of the Slovak Armed Forces, while the identified proposals fully respect economic considerations in procurement. These are, undoubtedly, the most advantageous solutions that will clearly serve the interest of protecting our homeland from aerial threats.“

If talks with the selected states are unsuccessful, the MOD will open negotiations with the countries next on the list according to the final bidders’ ranking.

After completing the bid evaluation process for the VSHORAD & MRAD systems, a team of MOD experts proposed the best solutions to Slovakia’s Air Defence Capability, taking account of all relevant criteria such as technical capabilities, total procurement price, integrated logistical support services, service life costs, schedule of delivery, and training of operators.

The overall procurement costs for the two types of AD systems, initially estimated at €196,450,677 (including VAT), stand at €193,985,880 (including VAT). The VSHORAD & MRAD systems are set to be delivered into service with the Slovak Armed Forces from 2024 to 2027.

06 Oct 23. Russia Has Tested Nuclear-Powered Missile, Could Revoke Atomic Test Ban: Putin. Russia Has Tested Nuclear-Powered Missile, Could Revoke Atomic Test Ban, Putin Says. Russia has successfully tested an experimental nuclear-powered cruise missile, President Vladimir Putin said Thursday, while also warning that the country’s parliament could revoke its ratification of a treaty banning nuclear tests.

In a speech at a forum of foreign policy experts, Putin announced that Russia has effectively completed the development of the Burevestnik cruise missile and the Sarmat heavy intercontinental ballistic missile and will work on putting them into production.

“We conducted the last successful test of the Burevestnik nuclear-powered global-range cruise missile,” he said without elaborating. His statement was the first announcement of a successful test of the Burevestnik, which translates as “Storm Petrel.” It was first mentioned by Putin in 2018.

Little is known about the Burevestnik, which was code-named Skyfall by NATO, and many Western experts have been skeptical about it, noting that a nuclear engine could be highly unreliable.

It is believed to be able to carry a nuclear warhead or a conventional one, and potentially could stay aloft for a much longer time than other missiles and cover much more distance, thanks to nuclear propulsion.

The United States and the Soviet Union worked on nuclear-powered rocket engines during the Cold War, but they eventually shelved the projects, considering them too hazardous.

The Burevestnik reportedly suffered an explosion in August 2019 during tests at a Russian navy range on the White Sea, killing five nuclear engineers and two servicemen and resulting in a brief spike in radioactivity that fueled fears in a nearby city.

Russian officials never identified the weapon involved, but the U.S. said it was the Burevestnik.

In the speech, Putin noted the United States has signed but not ratified the 1996 Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban, while Russia has signed and ratified it. He argued that Russia could mirror the stand taken by Washington.

“Theoretically, we may revoke the ratification.” he said.

Moscow last tested a nuclear weapon in 1990, before the collapse of the Soviet Union a year later. It ratified the global test ban in 2000.

Putin’s statement comes amid widespread concerns that Russia could move to resume nuclear tests to try to discourage the West from continuing to offer military support to Ukraine after the Kremlin sent troops into the country. Many Russian hawks have spoken in favor of resuming the tests.

Putin said that while some experts have talked about the need to conduct nuclear tests, he hasn’t yet formed an opinion on the issue.

“I’m not ready to say yet whether it’s necessary for us to conduct tests or not,” he said.

The Australian government has invested, spurring Thales Australia’s expansion in munition manufacturing.

In a move toward bolstering Australia’s national defence capabilities, Thales Australia has reacted positively towards the national government’s investment in local munition manufacturing.

This partnership shows Australia’s commitment to building a sovereign capability, a move that enhances the nation’s security infrastructure and stimulates advanced manufacturing.

The Hon Pat Conroy MP, Minister for Defence Industry, highlighted the Australian Government’s commitment to advancing munitions manufacturing within the country. He stated: “The Albanese Government’s investment in these cutting-edge technologies demonstrates we are delivering on the Defence Strategic Review’s recommendations to develop advanced munitions manufacturing in Australia.”

According to GlobalData’s “The Global Military Ammunition Market 2021–2031” report, Australia is focusing on modernising its armed forces and inducting weapons with precision strike capabilities as a deterrent for North Korea and China. Australia’s goal of modernising its armed forces by 2030 is a primary driver of demand for indigenous defence hardware and the ammunition, making it the fourth largest market in the Asia-Pacific region.

This investment is poised to impact the Mulwala and Benalla munition factories, which play a role in the country’s capacity to produce propellants, explosives, and munitions for the Australian Defence Force (ADF).

Thales Australia’s contributions include guided weapons production, propellants and explosives, solid fuel rocket motor manufacturing, and R&D and support services.

Jeff Connolly, CEO of Thales Australia and New Zealand, welcomed the investment, stating that the move would “support the significant step-change in technology development and innovation necessary to continue to grow a highly skilled workforce and create the advanced manufacturing jobs of the future.”

Thales Australia’s approach is highlighted by its 2021 investment of $6m in advanced manufacturing equipment at the Commonwealth-owned Mulwala facility in regional New South Wales. This move enables a 500% increase in the production capacity of rocket motors, a component in the manufacture of advanced guided and hypersonic weapons.

Thales Australia’s contribution to Australia’s defence extends to managing government-owned contractor-operated (GOCO) sites in Benalla, Victoria, and Mulwala, New South Wales, employing over 650 staff. These sites play a role in manufacturing munition systems for the ADF and allied forces.

Thales also supplied the Bushmaster armoured personnel carrier to the Australian Army and did so between 2004 and 2014. 06 Oct 23. Poland’s First Patriot Battery Now Operational in Warsaw.

Patriot Anti-Missile Defense System Already Protects Polish Skies. “For the first time in history, Warsaw receives anti-missile defense. I restored anti-aircraft defense after a long break, but anti-missile defense is for the first time in history, using very modern equipment. I think it’s the most modern equipment in the world, i.e. the Patriot system. Duties will start tomorrow. This is our great common success. (…)

“I am proud that such a good team of people works and has worked to create this system. Once again, I would like to thank you very much for this,” said Defense Minister Błaszczak during a meeting with Polish Army soldiers at the Warsaw-Babice airport.

On October 5, Minister Mariusz Błaszczak met with soldiers from the 37th Air Defense Missile Squadron who were starting duty on elements of the Patriot system as part of the process of strengthening the Polish Air Defense System.

Less than a year after the start of deliveries and integration of the Patriot/IBCS system, it has completed several exercises: in February in Warsaw’s Bemowo, in April in Radom, in August in Łask, and intensive training of staff, 37 DROP will soon be incorporated into the Polish Air Defense System.

“Unlike those who criticize me and who say that little or nothing is happening, or that they criticize me because we have not joined the European system – that is, the German system, constructed for the profits of German industry….we did not join because this system does not exist. And ours exists. We built it, we are still building it, it is a whole process, in cooperation with the United States and Great Britain,” stressed Błaszczak.

“Modern anti-aircraft and anti-missile equipment, acquired and implemented over the last few years, actually strengthens the security of the Polish sky. We are consistently building a multi-layer, integrated anti-aircraft and anti-missile defense system with the participation of Polish industry and American and British partners. The capabilities of this equipment are astronomical.

“If we compare it with the system that was previously equipped with the Polish Army, i.e. the post-Soviet system, this is a really great breakthrough in terms of the security of our homeland. But as I emphasize, we are not stopping on this path – there is still a lot ahead of us,” he added.

06 Oct 23. Slovakia to Buy M4A1 Assault Rifles Through US Foreign Military Financing Program. MOD Updates Cabinet on Convenient Procurement of M4A1 Assault Rifles Through U.S. Foreign Military Financing (FMF) Programme. The MOD updated the Cabinet on the intention to procure M4A1 assault rifles with accessories through the U.S. Foreign Military Financing (FMF) programme. The Cabinet took note of the informative document on the planned procurement of 5,000 U.S.-made Colt M4A1 Carbines chambered in 5.56 x 45 NATO.

In a statement, Defence Minister Martin Sklenár said: “Our Armed Forces have technically outdated standard service rifles in their arsenal. The rifles no longer meet the conditions for todayʼs conduct of combat operations. Although some of the forces do have more modern rifles, they have not been procured in sufficient numbers to enable the Slovak Armed Forces to undertake all tasks. If we fail to deal with this challenge soon enough, this war-fighting capability of our Armed Forces will be lost.”

For Slovakia, the procurement of the Colt M4A1 Carbines through the U.S. FMF programme is very advantageous. “Thanks to our very good cooperation with the U.S., clear position on Ukraine, and decisive and continued support to our neighbour, we will get the rifles, more or less, for free,” Minister Sklenár added.

He further noted that the total price for 5,000 Colt M4A1 Carbines, including accessories, spare parts and technical support, is US$17,372,291 in U.S. foreign military financing (FMF) assistance. After receiving the weapons, the MOD will transfer 20% VAT into the State’s treasury bank account. This transaction will have no impact on the public budget as the funds have been budgeted for MOD expenditure.

The MOD has plans to procure assault rifles for the Slovak Armed Forces in two ways. In addition to getting 5,000 Colt M4A1 Carbines through the U.S. FMF programme, the MOD plans to put the additional standard combat rifles out to international competition. Needless to say, the M4A1 rifles have in the past been procured for the Slovak Special Operations Forces (SOF), using the FMF process.

Fully consistent with the Soldier’s Personal Weapon & Equipment Development Concept and modernisation requirements, the new assault rifles are compatible with the standard combat rifles and ammunition used by several armed forces in NATO member states. 05 Oct 23. Philippines Expect Initial Delivery of BrahMos Cruise Missile by Year-End. DND Chief Upbeat About ‘Timely’ Delivery of Brahmos Missile System. The deliveries of the Philippines’ BrahMos cruise missile system will proceed as scheduled at the end of this year, Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. said Tuesday night.

“Supposedly at the end of the year, that’s in the contract. As far as I’m concerned, tuloy [ito] (it would proceed),” Teodoro said in a chance interview with reporters during the reception held for the National Day and Armed Forces Day of the Republic of Korea in Taguig City, when asked for updates on the matter.

Indian Ambassador to the Philippines Shambhu Santha Kumaran earlier assured the DND chief of the timely delivery of the BrahMos cruise missile platform acquired by Manila for its Shore-Based Anti-Ship Missile (SBASM) system.

The BrahMos cruise missile can be launched from a ship, aircraft, submarine or land. It has a top speed of around Mach 2.8 (around 3,400 kph), and can carry warheads weighing 200 to 300 kilograms.

Former Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana and BrahMos Aerospace director general Atul Dinkar Rane signed the contract worth PHP18.9 bn in a virtual ceremony at the DND headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City in January 2022.

04 Oct 23. Russia to Complete Delivery of S-400 Missile Systems to India in 2024 — Air Force Chief. Russia will complete the delivery of S-400 air defense systems to India next year, Indian Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal Vivek Ram Chaudhari said on Wednesday.

“Our contract was for five systems and three have been delivered. There is a hindrance in delivery due to the Russia-Ukraine war and we are sure that in the next one year, we will be getting the remaining systems,” The Economic Times quoted the Indian Air Force chief as saying.

India is also implementing the Kusha project to develop an indigenous long-range air defense system. The Indian Air Force has now got clearance from the Defense Ministry to develop five domestic air defense systems under the Kusha project, which are the Indian version of S-400 missile launchers, Chaudhari said.

New Delhi announced its intention to purchase Russian-made S-400 air defense systems in 2015. A $5.43 bln contract on the delivery of five regiment sets of S-400 Triumf anti-aircraft missile systems was signed during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India in October 2018.

Russia’s S-400 Triumf (NATO reporting name: SA-21 Growler) is the latest long-and medium-range surface-to-air missile system that went into service in 2007. It is designed to destroy strategic and tactical aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles and hypersonic weapons and can also be used against ground installations. (NYSE: MOG.A and MOG.B) Defense Sector’s Reconfigurable Integrated-weapons Platform (RIwP®) will be on exhibit in four locations during the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Annual Meeting and Exposition 2023. RIwP is a proven, modular, and scalable remote turret providing unmatched capacity to host multi-domain payloads for current and future ground-combat platforms. Designed to be weapon, sight, and platform agnostic, RIwP can be configured to meet the full spectrum of remote turret-related missions with a standard base assembly being the centerpiece to build tailorable and reconfigurable “plug-and-play” weapons solutions. “We are excited to have the RIwP turret on display in four different applications at AUSA 2023. Leonardo DRS is the lead vehicle integrator for the Army’s mobile C-UAS program, MLIDS.

 

28 Sep 23. Kazakh startup pushes into local market for explosive drones. One of the newcomers at the Belgrade Partner 23 defense fair was a Kazakhstan-based company that has purposely kept a low profile over the last year while developing a new explosive drone for the country’s armed forces.

Taharqa Technologies, a Kazakh drone startup founded a year ago, has lifted the veil off its new project, the NMD multirotor drone. The system, which remains at prototype stage, weighs 2 kg and has an endurance of 20 minutes.

“The NMD drone was developed for the armed forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as part of the country’s ongoing drone program, which seeks to field a wide variety of unmanned aircraft, including reconnaissance and kamikaze ones,” Tair Balbayev, chief executive of Taharqa, told Defense News.

The executive stated that the push for the national armament project began prior to the Ukraine war, and has accelerated in recent years. In May 2022, for example, the Kazakh border guards received hand-launched “Raven” drones from the United States to monitor their borders for terrorist activity.

The same month, Turkish Aerospace Industries and Kazakhstan Engineering also signed a license agreement for the country to begin locally manufacturing ANKA drones. This marked an key decision, as Kazakhstan became the first state outside of Turkey to produce these systems.

However, what has shifted is Astana’s ambition to build up its own manufacturing capabilities and mass-produce military strike drones.

In regards to the NMD system, the requirement from the Kazakh Ministry of Defense was weapon that can target enemy infantry with high-explosive fragmentation warheads. According to the manufacturer, the drone can penetrate armor up to 10 mm.

“Although realistically this will not happen within the next year, our goal is to be able to take the NMD model into production in the near future,” Balbayev added.

This is the first time the Kazakh company attends the Serbian arms fair, and the motivation behind its presence this year was to come to understand its positioning within the international market and secure potential funding.

Aside from drones, Taharqa is also designing gliding munitions to be used with combat aircraft to defeat air-defense positions. That weapon is slated to have an 8 kg high-explosive warhead and be powered by an electric motor to allow it to reach ranges up to 60-70 kilometers when launched from heights of 3-5 km, the company said. 05 Oct 23. Thales to deliver the Combat Management System and sensor suite to Polish MIECZNIK Frigates.

  • Thales has signed a contract with Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ) to deliver the TACTICOS integrated combat management system (CMS), sonars, air-surveillance and fire-control radars and 360° infrared sensor to the MIECZNIK1 Frigate programme for the Polish Navy.
  • It is a result of Strategic Cooperation Agreement signed in 2022 by Thales, PGZ and PGZ SW and will allow PGZ-MIECZNIK Consortium to deliver frigates within expected multirole capabilities.

Thales will equip the Polish Navy MIECZNIK frigates with the TACTICOS combat management system, sonars, infrared sensor and radars providing the warships with multiple functions for detection, identification, command and control and decision making. The first ship is expected to enter service in 2029 through a strategic programme, which incorporates a cooperation agreement between Thales and the PGZ-MIECZNIK Consortium (lead by Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa).

Designed to carry out a wide range of tasks at sea, including, among others, securing sea lines of communication and critical infrastructure, the multi-role frigates of the MIECZNIK class will significantly increase the capabilities of the Polish Navy and be an important contribution of the Republic of Poland within the North Atlantic Alliance. These vessels will be equipped with a set of sensors developed by Thales and integrated with the warship’s combat system.

Thales combat management system TACTICOS will be the central command and decision-making element of the frigate combat system. Its function and performance – supporting sensor control, picture compilation, situation assessment, action support and weapon control – are critical to the operational effectiveness of a naval vessel.

Poland’s MIECZNIK frigates will rely on a complete Thales sonar suite comprising the BlueHunter hull-mounted sonar and the Captas-2 towed-array sonar providing a multi-sensor assessment of the overall underwater situation.

In addition, Thales will provide two highly complementary radars, the SM400 Block 2 and the NS50. The SM400 radar, a multifunction S-Band radar, is designed to simultaneously provide long-range air and surface surveillance, helicopter control and weapon control functions at a range up to 400 km. The NS50 radar, together with TSA 6000 IFF1 interrogator, offers an additional layer of protection providing superior air and surface detection, tracking and classification. The frigates will also be equipped with ARTEMIS, a 360° naval infrared search and track system, and the STIR 1.2 EO Mk2 fire control radar.

With the support of the UK Government and working together with Babcock and MBDA, Thales will put key learnings from the Type 31 programme in the UK into good use to reduce risk and ease the path to vessel acceptance. Moreover Thales will contribute to consolidate Poland’s local defence industry by working with the PGZ-MIECZNIK Consortium and other Polish industry actors.

04 Oct 23. Advancements in electromagnetic artillery boosts Europe’s PILUM programme. All seven partners from four European countries working on the railgun agreed that there have been significant advancements in hypersonics and energy solutions.

The European Defence Agency (EDA), the defence branch of the EU, hosted the final meeting of the ‘Projectiles for Increased Long-range effects Using electroMagnetic railgun’ (PILUM) project on 28 September 2023.

Launched in March 2021, the EDA commissioned an in-depth feasibility study to investigate and assess the use of the electromagnetic railgun (EMRG) as a long-range artillery system with a budget of €1.5m ($1.57m).

EDA’s team have since been working on a disruptive concept for an electromagnetic railgun (EMRG): a future artillery system that will fire significantly higher projectile velocities and long-range effect (over 200km).

Besides research on EMRG and its projectile, the project also examined the integrability in terrestrial and naval platforms.

The PILUM consortium includes the French-German Research Institute of Saint-Louis as the leading EMRG expert in Europe; leading European defence companies: Nexter Systems & Munitions, Diehl-Defence and Naval Group; as well as Explomet and the Von Karman Institute.

In the final meeting, EDA partners focused on the main research topics studied within PILUM and the results obtained for each of the three components of the EMRG: the railgun, the hypersonic projectile and electric energy storage and conversion.

All seven partners from four European countries working together on this study agreed that significant advancements in the three key areas of electromagnetic artillery were made in these areas.

This progress sets the stage for the future of advanced electromagnetic weaponry. The achievements in the PILUM project serve as a strong foundation for the next maturation phase called THEMA (Technology for Electromagnetic Artillery) and launched under the European Commission’s European Defence Fund. THEMA’s goal is to prepare for the testing of an electromagnetic railgun on a firing range by 2028.

Electromagnetic railgun components and their advancements

The PILUM project explored various energy supply ideas, such as capacitive and inductive energy concepts. The capacitive system demonstrated a 25% increase in energy density under specific operational conditions.

Another promising solution, the XRAM inductive energy concept, showed potential for storing magnetic energy efficiently, with ongoing work to address its technological challenges in the THEMA phase.

In addition, the railgun launcher’s critical components, exposed to extreme heat and high-speed friction, were protected with special wear-resistant materials, which significantly extended the railgun barrel’s lifespan.

The project also developed a concept for hypervelocity projectiles for speeds up to Mach 6. The performance of the projectile concept was extensively assessed at Mach 5 through wind tunnel experiments and computer simulations. (Source: army-technology.com)

 

02 Oct 23. Northrop Grumman Successfully Powers US Navy’s Trident II D5 Flight Test. Powered by Northrop Grumman Corporation’s solid rocket motors, one Trident II D5 Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM) was successfully flight tested as part of the U.S. Navy’s Demonstration and Shakedown Operation 32 (DASO-32) event.

–The Navy exercise, known as DASO 32, demonstrates the readiness of the USS Louisiana (SSBN-743) crew and certifies the submarine for deployment.

–Successful results from the exercise increases the D5 SLBM test record to 191 successful launches with no motor failures.

–Some motors that supported the unarmed flight test were the oldest Trident II D5 motors flown to date – demonstrating their reliability and proven performance.

–In partnership with the U.S. Navy and prime contractor Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman is modernizing and digitizing Trident II D5 manufacturing processes, including the implementation of advanced digital models, to further enhance manufacturing and enable sustained production for future demand.

Wendy Williams, vice president, propulsion systems, Northrop Grumman said: “Northrop Grumman’s strategic motors have provided propulsion success for 191 successful test launches since their deployment to the fleet. That is the kind of performance the Navy has come to rely upon to meet national defense readiness with Northrop Grumman solid rocket motor technology to power the Trident II Submarine Launched Ballistic Missiles.”

Details on Trident II D5:

The Trident II D5/D5LE SLBM is a three-stage missile currently deployed on U.S. Ohio-class and U.K. Vanguard-class submarines and will be carried aboard U.S. Columbia-class and U.K. Dreadnought-class submarines in the future. Northrop Grumman, under a contract from Lockheed Martin, manufactures solid-propulsion motor systems for all three stages of the Trident II missile. The company has delivered over two thousand Trident II D5 motors and cast nearly 87 m pounds of propellant since production began in 1985.

Northrop Grumman has supported the Navy’s deterrence mission for over six decades, supplying propulsion for the nation’s Fleet Ballistic Missile submarine-launched systems starting with Polaris, Poseidon C3, Trident I C4 and Trident II D5/D5LE, which is expected to continue service into the 2040s.

Building on its flight-proven foundation, Northrop Grumman is optimizing its best-in-class solid rocket motor technologies through various digital transformation and modernization efforts to improve manufacturing processes, increase efficiency, enhance reliability and support future plans for the sea-based leg of the nuclear triad.

 

03 Oct 23. Seven EU Member States Order 155mm Ammunition through EDA Joint Procurement. Seven EU Member States have placed orders with European industry through the European Defence Agency’s fast-track joint procurement scheme for 155mm ammunition. More orders, for instance for national replenishment purposes, could materialise in the coming weeks and months.

High Representative Josep Borrell, who is also Head of the European Defence Agency, said: “We have put an ambitious framework in place to support joint procurement of ammunition – to replenish stocks and to support Ukraine. The European Defence Agency played a crucial role in this endeavour. Several Member States are buying 155-mm artillery ammunition together, thanks to the contracts negotiated by the EDA with the European defence industry. More are expected. We need this for Ukraine, but also for the EU. Joint procurement is the best way to spend better more efficiently and effectively together. This is a new step towards a more coordinated and capable EU defence.”

EDA’s Chief Executive Jiří Šedivý said: “This is proof of the confidence placed in EDA and in European defence collaboration. Joint procurement is the best option to support Member States in purchasing ammunition according to their national needs or for Ukraine. It also sends a strong signal to industry, showing the EU’s commitment to the European defence technological and industrial base (EDTIB).”

The EDA’s fast-track for 155mm ammunition covers all-up-rounds and elements thereof (fuses, projectiles, charges, primer) for four different, modern firing platforms designed and produced in Europe (France’s Caesar, Poland’s Krab, Germany’s Panzerhaubitze 2000 and Slovakia’s Zuzana) and most used by the Ukrainian armed forces.

Nine framework contracts with industry are currently in place. The seven Member States’ orders, signed for both all-up-rounds and elements, are eligible for European Peace Facility reimbursement. EDA cannot divulge contractual details at this stage.

The EDA fast-track procedure for joint procurement was set up in record time, allowing for the tendering process to be simplified, and contracts finalised at short notice. It has been designed to reach the whole EDTIB, including both major companies as well as subcontractors, to provide Member States with flexible options and to speed up deliveries.

Three-track approach

Joint procurement is the best option to achieve cost reduction through economies of scale and interoperability. The overarching EDA project arrangement has been signed by 26 Member States and Norway. Flexible and inclusive, it allows all EDA Member States to join the initiative.

EDA’s joint procurement efforts are part of a three-track approach to deliver more artillery ammunition and missiles to Ukraine, agreed by the Council of the EU in March 2023.

Through these three tracks, the EU is supporting Member States to deliver artillery ammunition and missiles from national stockpiles, to aggregate demand and jointly procure 155mm ammunition, and to ramp up the production capacity of the European defence industry.

03 Oct 23. X-ray robot could save lives on the battlefield. This tech would enable military personnel to look inside containers, including cars and walls, for hidden weapons or explosives without being near the threat.

A pioneering X-ray robot designed to detect weapons and explosives is a step closer to saving lives on the battlefield.

Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) experts have run field trials on a Rapiscan American Science and Engineering produced prototype that uses X-Ray Backscatter (XRBS) imaging technology mounted on a L3Harris T7 remote-controlled robot.

This would save lives by enabling military personnel to look inside containers – including cars and walls – for hidden weapons or explosive material without being near the potential threat.

Operators would also be able to scan large areas quicker leading to increased situational awareness giving troops an operational advantage.

Trial Manager Elaine said:

X-ray Backscatter is an established technology but what we are trying to do is apply it to explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) – this approach is novel.

Being able to robotically mount X-ray Backscatter provides additional situational awareness, potentially to see if there is a threat item without having to go anywhere near it. It feels amazing to be involved in a project that could go on to save lives.

She added that it was extremely rewarding from joining as a graduate to demonstrating this capability in her first role as trial manager.

The project is a collaboration with the US government and two prototypes have been created.

After the successful field tests the project team will be using the feedback to assess what modifications would be needed to turn this prototype into a military asset that could be used on the battlefield.

Physics graduate Lyndsey: “It’s incredible to be working on such ground-breaking technology. The reason I did physics was because I wanted to make a difference in the world and I really wanted to help people. I feel like this project does this. I love it. It’s a great day’s work. It definitely is a really cool project to work on. The team have been demonstrating the capability to UK and US stakeholders using simulated explosive and non-conventional threats as well as various firearms.”

They showed the prototype detecting threats through bags, plastic drums and metal lockers in addition to a car and a variety of wall materials.

The prototype imager head is mounted on the robot arm and is operated via a haptic controller.   Combining the X-ray Backscatter system with the EOD robot has allowed demonstration of remote deployment of the capability across multiple terrains.

The Backscatter technology forms the image by sweeping a small ‘pencil beam’ of X-rays across the target and detecting those reflected back using detectors mounted on the front of the imager.

The image is transmitted back to the operator in real-time for analysis.

Senior Principal Scientist Andrew said: “The feedback we’ve had from our stakeholders who have come to see the system up here has been very positive, better than I could have hoped for really. I’ve been jotting things down – some direct quotes to use – and I think my favourite so far has been ‘I want one!’ When they say something like that you know you’ve delivered something that has piqued their interest.”

03 Oct 23. KVD-002 UCAV strengthens PLAGF’s airborne ISR capability. The People’s Liberation Army Ground Force’s (PLAGF’s) acquisition of the new KVD-002 integrated surveillance unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) has reinforced the modernisation of its airborne intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities.

Since 2021 the PLAGF has focused on the acquisition of ISR or target-detection platforms such as the KVD-001 fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and HAIG Z-11WB light attack and surveillance manned helicopter, according to Janes inventory data. The PLAGF began inductions of these two platforms in 2021.

The KVD-002, which was unveiled for the first time during the 6th China Helicopter Exposition at Tianjin in September 2023, augments the capabilities of both the KVD-001 and the Z-11WB. Introductory text for the KVD-002 at the exposition described the UCAV as the PLAGF’s “first integrated surveillance and combat system”. 30 Sep 23. DESA Sells Two Royal Navy Minehunters to Romania.

Minehunters which served the Royal Navy around the globe will have a new lease of life with one of the UK’s NATO allies.

HMS Blyth and HMS Pembroke, which patrolled the seas as Sandown Class Mine Counter Measure Vessels (MCMVs), have been sold to Romania by our Defence Equipment Sales Authority (DESA). The former ship was decommissioned in 2021 while the latter will be retired early next year.

On behalf of Navy Command, our Ships Support team has been working with Babcock to refurbish the minehunters before they are transferred to their new owners.

The Royal Navy will provide individual operator and maintainer training via Navy International Defence Training (IDT), and collective training via Fleet Operational Sea Training (FOST).

James Cartlidge, Minister for Defence Procurement, said: “Given the current geo-political climate, the UK’s relationship with its NATO allies is more important than ever. This agreement with Romania is the latest strategic relationship we have strengthened, providing their navy with a new capability and, crucially, making a real contribution to security in the Black Sea region.”

The former Sandown Class ships are 52.5m long, weigh 485 tonnes and have a range of more than 2,500 nautical miles without refuelling.

They use high-definition sonar to scour the world’s seabeds for mines and lost explosives, which are then safely destroyed by the ship’s clearance diving teams or the ATLAS Seafox mine disposal system.

They also worked closely with regional and coalition partners to maintain the security of the sea lanes of communications, crucial to international shipping and the global economy.

HMS Blyth was one of four Navy minehunters permanently stationed in the Gulf. She was also deployed in the Baltic Sea and for domestic tasking.

One of HMS Pembroke’s most notable successes was the discovery and safe disposal of a Russian mine from the First World War. A remote underwater vehicle was deployed to identify the device off the coast of Lithuania before it was safely disposed of.

DESA Head Richard Whalley said: “Our dedicated sales team continue to find new homes for the retired Royal Navy Sandown Class ships and I am pleased to see HMS Blyth and HMS Pembroke preparing for their new roles. This agreement highlights the strong relationship we have with our allies and feeds into NATO’s collective mission of supporting global security.”

The outgoing Sandown Class will be replaced by autonomous mine-hunting systems operating from RFA Stirling Castle, the new “mothership” bought by DE&S as a commercial vessel from Norwegian company Island Offshore before being modified for her future role.

HMS Blyth was transferred to the Romanian Navy this month, while HMS Pembroke will be transferred next spring.

In the context of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, drifting mines pose a direct threat to Black Sea states, and sea lines of communication. This sale will enable Romania, a key NATO ally, to have a direct, positive contribution to the maritime security of the region.

It follows other minehunter sales made by DESA, including HMS Quorn, Dulverton and Cottesmore to Lithuania, HMS Sandown, Inverness and Bridport to Estonia, HMS Berkeley and Bicester to Greece, and HMS Atherstone to maritime contractor Harland & Wolff.

02 Oct 23. Lockheed Martin and U.S. Navy Demonstrate Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missile. On September 27 Lockheed Martin, supporting the U.S. Navy, marked the successful launch of one Trident II D5 Life Extension Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM). The Navy conducted Demonstration and Shakedown Operation-32 (DASO-32) launching an unarmed missile from the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California.

DASO-32 increased the Trident II D5 record to 191 successful test launches since design completion in 1989 – the most reliable test record for a large ballistic missile. Through the test, Navy submarine USS Louisiana (SSBN 743) demonstrated the readiness of the crew and strategic weapon system and certified the crew for strategic patrol. The DASO event provides an opportunity to collect data about the D5 Life Extension missile’s performance using a test missile kit, also produced by Lockheed Martin. This event represents the last planned DASO resulting from an engineer refueling overhaul from an OHIO-class submarine.

About the Missile

The D5 missile, built and upgraded by Lockheed Martin for the Navy, is the most advanced ballistic missile in the world and is currently aboard U.S. OHIO-class and UK VANGUARD-class submarines. The three-stage, solid-propellant, inertial-guided ballistic missile can travel a nominal range of 4,000 nautical miles and carries multiple independently targeted reentry vehicles.

The joint government-industry team achieved the initial fleet introduction of the D5LE in 2017. The Life Extension program modernized the submarine-launched ballistic missile while maintaining the proven performance of the D5 missile for significantly less than the cost of designing a new missile.

30 Sep 23. Ambitious Electromagnetic Railgun Project Surpasses Expectations, Raising Potential of Future Artillery Systems.

Today, the European Defence Agency (EDA) hosted the final meeting of the PILUM project, which focuses on a disruptive concept for an electromagnetic railgun (EMRG) – a future complementary artillery system with the potential of significantly higher projectile velocities and long-range effect. Launched in April 2021, with funding from the European Commission (EC) under the Preparatory Action for Defence Research (PADR), today’s meeting focused on the main research topics studied within PILUM and the results obtained for each of the three components of the EMRG: the railgun, the hypersonic projectile and electric energy storage and conversion.

All seven partners from four European countries working together on this study agreed that significant advancements in the three key areas of electromagnetic artillery were made. This progress sets the stage for the future of advanced electromagnetic weaponry. The achievements in the PILUM project serve as a strong foundation for the next phase called THEMA (Technology for Electromagnetic Artillery) and launched under the EC’s European Defence Fund (EDF). THEMA’s goal is to prepare for the testing of an electromagnetic railgun on a firing range by 2028.

PILUM – Progress on three key components

Across the results obtained for each of the three components of the EMRG significant findings were reported in the final meeting. The railgun launcher’s critical components, exposed to extreme heat and high-speed friction, were protected with special wear-resistant materials, which significantly extended the railgun barrel’s lifespan.

The project also developed a concept for hypervelocity projectiles for speeds up to MACH 6. The performance of the projectile concept was extensively assessed at MACH 5 through wind tunnel experiments and computer simulations.

Additionally, the PILUM project explored various energy supply ideas, such as capacitive and inductive energy concepts. The capacitive system demonstrated a 25% increase in energy density under specific operational conditions. Another promising solution, the XRAM inductive energy concept, showed potential for storing magnetic energy efficiently, with ongoing work to address its technological challenges in the maturation phase (THEMA project). 30 Sep 23. US Army Aims to Field New Hypersonic Weapon this Year Despite Test Failures. The U.S. military plans to accelerate its fielding of hypersonic weapons despite a series of test issues. On September 6, the Department of Defense postponed a planned test-firing of the U.S. Army’s Dark Eagle Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon System (LRHW). This was the third time that the trial, the second in a series supporting the LRHW and the Navy’s Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) program, had been canceled. Originally planned for late 2022, preflight issues and a battery problem scrubbed the first two tests.

Under the CPS program, the Army and Navy are developing long-range missiles to deliver the Common Hypersonic Glide Body (C-HGB).

The latest test was intended to evaluate the Army’s weapon-control system and battery operation center for the LRHW. It would also have been the first firing using the Army’s transport erector launcher. Despite the cancellation, defense officials said data were successfully collected on the performance of ground hardware and software that would support the fielding of hypersonic weapons.

Army officials have acknowledged that they will miss the goal of fielding the Dark Eagle LRHW by the end of fiscal 2023 on September 30, but still hope to deliver the capability by the end of the calendar year. Army officials said that the delay was due to the cancellation of an important C-HGB test. That planned test would have been very close to an operational trial rather than a developmental test, the officials said.

The joint CPS program is divided into several phases. The first phase seeks to develop and demonstrate a hypersonic, cold-gas-launched missile system prototype. Plans called for five flight tests under a joint flight campaign. The first (JFC-1) took place in June 2022, but failed after the missile experienced an in-flight anomaly. Following the latest failure, it is not clear when JFC-2 might be rescheduled.

JFC-2 and -3 are intended to support the Army’s LRHW program. The service is required to complete three flight tests before LRHW can move to a program of record. The trials are also necessary for the early fielding of the system with the 5th Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, under the Army’s 1st Multidomain Task Force.

The JFC-4 and -5 tests would demonstrate the cold-gas-launch capability for launches from warships. Originally slated for fiscal 2024, these trials will likely be postponed to fiscal 2025, affecting Navy plans to field the CPS on its Zumwalt class destroyers. It could also delay the fielding on Virginia class Block V attack submarines, which is anticipated in 2029.

The Army planned to field the first LRHW battery in fiscal 2023, and additional batteries in fiscal 2025 and fiscal 2027. A battery consists of four transport-erector-launchers, each with two missiles, and a battery operations center. The systems would be assigned to the Strategic Fires Battalion, alongside a High-Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) battery and a Mid-Range Capability battery, as part of the 1st Multidomain Task Force.

Since 2018, the U.S. has increased its focus on hypersonic weapons as it revamps its forces for conventional conflict with a peer or near-peer competitor. This shift gained urgency in 2019 when China introduced its first hypersonic weapon, the DF-17, a mobile, medium-range ballistic missile designed to deliver the DF-ZF hypersonic glide vehicle.

The development of any advanced technology is bound to run into challenges. The recent delays should not distract from the significant progress the CPS program has made. It went from a concept in 2019 to delivering hardware two years later. Army officials say that it is better to uncover issues now rather than later after the system has been fielded. 29 Sep 23. To The Point International sets its sights on new turret range. Vernon Kroeger, CEO of Midrand-based To The Point International, working closely with Vision24 Technologies, is well advanced with the development of a number of new turret designs, having just concluded developing its new Terminator turret.

To The Point International (TTPI) designs sights, fire control systems for armoured vehicles, small turrets, and remotely operated weapon systems. Subsystem design covers weapon mounts, weapon controls (cocking systems, remote triggers, gun drives and ammunition feed systems), sighting systems, and fire control systems (including ballistic algorithms).

Part of the design and development of a product is the testing and evaluation, and this covers first round hit probability tests as well as structural analysis tests to see how the turret handles recoil etc.

Existing products include slaved gunner sighting systems, stabilised commander sighting systems, fire control systems, thermal scopes for rifles and assault rifles, and video borescopes for hunting and sniper rifles.

Extensive track record

Kroeger has decades of experience in the industry, having designed nearly a dozen stabilised sights. He has worked on multiple projects, such as the commander and gunner sights on the Olifant tank upgrade for the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), a full T-72 main battle tank fire control system upgrade, the Rooivalk attack helicopter’s sight flight clearance, and Project Hoefyster commander and gunner sight initial designs.

Previous work has resulted in the sale of intellectual property to Zeiss (for miniature stabilised sighting system) and Thales (for the stabilised sighting system for the Starstreak surface-to-air missile system (Thales Air Defence Limited) as well as for armoured fighting vehicles (Thales Optronics Taunton Limited). According to Kroeger, not many companies the size of TTPI can claim to have done this out of South Africa.

The Terminator

Kroeger told defenceWeb that TTPI has just finished developing its new Terminator turret, an open one-man turret in which the weapon is aimed, cocked and fired manually by the gunner. Although the gunner operates the weapon manually, an automated electrical assist enables the gunner to track and engage moving targets without releasing his grip on the weapon. Pointing the weapon left or right moves the turret accordingly when the weapon is going to hit the turret structure. The system also has a built-in safety feature that prevents the weapon barrel from damaging open hatches or injuring personnel in the weapon arc when it is rotating. The turret structure, which includes six vision blocks and a large gun shield, provides the gunner with NATO STANAG Level 2 protection.

Although the turret is open, a canopy with Level 2 protection can be added for protection from above in urban environments. The 10 mm armox500 hatch in the turret floor can be closed and locked from inside the vehicle. In the open position the hatch also increases the protection for the gunner from behind to better than Level 3.

The 480 kg Terminator Turret can accommodate 7.62 and 12.7 mm Eastern Bloc or NATO weapons as well as the 14.5 mm PKVT heavy machinegun or a 40 mm Mk19 automatic grenade launcher, making the turret extremely versatile and an attractive option for customers with limited budgets, Kroeger said. These turrets can be supplied fitted to new production vehicles or fitted quickly and easily to existing vehicles as an upgrade option.

Development of the Terminator started after a local armoured vehicle manufacturer ran short of the manual W&E Platt turrets it was using and so turned to TTPI for an alternative. These turrets can be upgraded to have add-on armour as well as smoke grenade launchers installed. Not many other companies can boast having smoke grenade launchers or an electric drive on turrets in the same class, Kroeger explained. These turrets are currently in production with the first batch due to be completed by early next year.

Kroeger told defenceWeb that TTPI also plans to manufacture a new version that has the weapon mounted inside the turret walls as opposed to on a pintle mount outside the front armour plates of the turret. This will increase protection of the gunner by reducing the ballistic window of the turret while at the same time enabling the installation of much larger ammunition storage bins. According to Kroeger, this will satisfy the requirement for larger amounts of ready rounds asked for by almost all users who look at this class of turret. Unfortunately, there is a small weight sacrifice but the benefit of a larger number of ready rounds far outweighs the additional mass penalty, he maintains. The new prototype, which will have all the features of the first turret, is due for completion at the end of Q3 2023.

High-capacity ring turret

Kroeger explained that on typical small open turrets and gun mounts, the gunner only has access to the 100 to 150 rounds of ammunition in the box next to his gun. TTPI has completed the design of a new, innovative, fully stabilised, remotely operated weapon system (ROWS) that can accommodate 350-450 12.7 mm ready rounds in a ring around the turret. This gives operators a significantly better supply of well protected ammunition before needing to reload. This system will take the form of either a remote weapon station or a closed one-man turret.

For the remote weapon station, the advantage of this type of ammunition storage system is the reduction of the cross-sectional area of the weapon mount/turret with the resulting reduced ballistic window. This will increase survivability and reduce the weight of the mount itself. For the one-man turret, the turret profile will be reduced, significantly reducing the ballistic window of the turret, reducing the weight and enabling fast response times to threats, Kroeger explained.

Kroeger also mentioned that in line with TTPI’s vision of producing affordable high performance turrets, both these systems will be fitted with an artificial intelligence (AI) early warning threat detection system which will reduce system response time as well as increase survivability on the battlefield. In addition to this, the gunner will be provided with virtual vision blocks giving all round observation capability. These vision blocks will also be fitted with the early warning AI threat detection software. Automatic designation to the main gunner sight for possible target engagement will be a standard feature.

All remotely operated turrets, which will be fully stabilised enabling firing on the move, will be fitted with integrated electro-optical payloads including a laser rangefinder, HD day camera and HD thermal imager with full HD graphics overlay. These turrets will also be fitted with obstacle avoidance systems to eliminate the possibility of weapon contact with parts of the vehicle structure or personnel on the roof of the vehicle when in motion. Firing of the weapon will not be possible if the avoidance detection system is activated thereby eliminating the possibility of hitting your own personnel or vehicle structure during weapon firing.

Lastly, these systems will all be fitted with new touch screen target designation capability which allows simultaneous situational awareness and target aim point refinement. This feature has not yet been contemplated by competitors. An aimpoint assist function for marine applications and ground-based fire control systems will also be incorporated as standard. If this feature works as envisaged the use of a video autotracker will not be required for gunner assistance during target engagement.

“As has happened in the past, we expect our competitors to pay us a compliment by copying our innovative ideas, but we intend to be at least two years ahead of them. Technology demonstration of prototype hardware is scheduled to be before the end of Q4 2023,” Kroeger said.

“There are an exciting few months left before the year ends. We want to reach the end of the year with three new, well-priced, high-tech turrets ready for production,” Kroeger told defenceWeb. He also stated that the company does not compete with existing designs but produces unique, well priced systems that give the user good bang for their buck, filling gaps in the product ranges on the market today.
