10 Oct 25. Galvion introduces Batlskin Caiman® Ultra-Light Helmet at AUSA 2025. 09 Oct 25. BAE Signs Agreement With Rheinmetall for CVv90120 Advanced Gun Upgrade. The newly upgraded CV90120 prototype features advanced firepower with the 120mm L44A1 LR weapon system. BAE Systems Hägglunds is teaming up with Rheinmetall Weapon and Ammunition to integrate the 120mm L44A1 Low Recoil (LR) weapon system onto the latest CV90120 vehicle, leveraging the expertise and capabilities of two leading European defense companies to deliver a tailored solution to meet the evolving demands of the battlefield.

“Our customers will benefit from the combined expertise and resources of our two companies, resulting in a solution that offers enhanced firepower, protection, and mobility – a winning combination on the modern battlefield,” said Tarkan Turkcan, CV90 platform director.

Rheinmetall’s 120mm L44A1 LR gun features a high-pressure gun solution for platforms for outstanding performance compatible with all NATO standard 120mm rounds, including Rheinmetall´s DM11 3-mode programmable high-explosive (HE) round and enhanced kinetic energy (KE) rounds. BAE Systems’ new CV90120 is based on the latest CV90MkIV variant chassis and will provide enhanced battlefield speeds, upgraded electronic architecture, active damping, a new engine, a heavy-duty transmission, and an active protection system. It also provides the added advantage of having a common platform for those armies that already have selected to use the CV90 IFV or will do so in the future, through commonalities in training and spare parts. 09 Oct 25. FN Wins US Army Development Contract for Precision Grenadier System. FN America, LLC  announced that it has been awarded a Prototype Project Opportunity Notice (PPON) contract valued at $2m, by the U.S. Army to further develop its submission for the Precision Grenadier System, a next-generation primary soldier weapon system and family of ammunition that enables precision engagements to destroy targets with increased lethality and precision compared to legacy grenade launchers. The FN Multi-purpose Tactical Launcher 30mm (MTL-30) that was designed in the U.S. and will be manufactured by FN America at its plant in South Carolina is a soldier-portable, semi-automatic, medium-velocity, flat trajectory grenade launcher that enables warfighters to engage targets at extended ranges with more effective payloads over existing technologies. After extensive testing, FN’s solution has successfully met the DoD’s key performance criteria while also delivering desired characteristics. In addition, the FN solution is easily manufacturable and logistically supportable due to state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques, ensuring the program will be cost-effective.

“This program is a U.S. Government priority with the shift in modern warfare and engagements, and FN is honored to be selected to develop this new, innovative solution,” said Mark Cherpes, President and CEO for FN America, LLC. “Once developed and implemented, this weapon system could radically change future battlefield strategies. It will offer new capabilities at the squad level and upgraded tactical options, giving the warfighter a more effective system.”

FN’s solution, the FN MTL-30, is the first in this family of launchers and ammunition, as FN works with the Department of Defense (DoD) to help solve one of the world’s most pressing battlefield needs.

“The FN MTL-30 shoulder-fired launcher can engage in close-quarter warfare, defeat targets in defilade, and engage unmanned aerial systems (UAS). It could also be networked with FN remote weapon stations to create a multi-layered defense against UAS,” said John Bungard, Sr. Director, Military Development Programs for FN America, LLC. “Providing solutions that can counter multiple threats is critical for future battlefield engagements. We are excited that the Army is interested in maturing our PGS solution. We are fully committed to this system and its development.”

The FN MTL-30 is chambered for 30mm medium-velocity grenades and features a detachable box magazine with 3- or 5-round capacity. At just 35 inches in length and 8.5 inches tall, the weapon weighs just over 10 lb. The bolt catch, magazine release and safety selector are all ambidextrous, plus there is an M4-style telescoping buttstock with a modular cheek riser. The modular rail system has a contiguous top rail for mounting of visual augmentation systems (VAS) and other devices, plus side M-LOK slots with a MIL-STD Picatinny rail.

For the soldier, the FN MTL-30 is lighter and more streamlined than previous options. Real time soldier feedback has led to a prototype that is far more user-friendly, incorporating a footprint users will be familiar with due to the M4-style controls, grip and buttstock. The system features a soft shooting launcher with low-felt recoil, enabling rapid target engagement with effective payloads from an extremely controllable system. In addition, FN’s modular system is fully serviceable at the user level and has high parts commonality with existing components.

“The technologies we have incorporated have allowed FN to create a system that is much lighter, more compact and more maneuverable than previous soldier-operated grenade launchers,” said Jim Williams, Vice President, Military Programs for FN America, LLC. “This will improve soldier capabilities on the battlefield, offering a robust solution for close combat, engaging targets beyond 500m or to potentially combat other threats such as unmanned aerial systems.”

Throughout its history, FN has been one of the largest suppliers of small arms to the U.S. military and continues to develop innovative, future technology. In addition to this opportunity, the company currently holds contracts for the FNM240 and its variants, the FN M249 lightweight machine gun; the FN MK 46, MK 48, MK 17 and MK 20 SSR for USSOCOM and various other contracts. FN has decades of experience designing and supplying various grenade launching systems. The company produced the MK 19 fully automatic 40mm launcher, the MK 13 EGLM that was a part of the SCAR program and currently sells the FN 40GL standalone launcher internationally. 08 Oct 25. South Korea’s Hanwha begins production of wheeled K9 howitzer, with first tests set for early 2026. Hanwha Defense USA has announced that a wheeled version of its K9 Thunder howitzer is now in production and scheduled for testing in early 2026. The new variant is based on the K9A2 self-propelled howitzer and aims to offer a wheeled alternative to the current tracked systems, said Jason Pak, Senior Director of Business Development for Land Systems. The company, a U.S. subsidiary of South Korea’s Hanwha Aerospace, is positioning the wheeled K9 as part of efforts to support the U.S. Army’s modernisation of its ageing 155mm howitzer fleet. “Hanwha Aerospace and Hanwha USA’s pride and joy is the K9,” Pak said. “It has garnered so much success globally. We know that it is a mature, proven, currently fielded 52-caliber system that could be a tremendous asset to the United States Army.” To support this goal, Hanwha is “looking to establish a full-on vertical supply chain here in the United States as it pertains to the production of this capability,” Pak stated. He added, “We’re absolutely committed to U.S. jobs and capacity,” and outlined plans for “rapid initial [K9] delivery coming out of Korea if needed, and then that would be immediately followed by full production and sustainment in the U.S.”

Carl Poppe, Director of Business Development for Artillery Systems at Hanwha Defense USA, said the company is ready to meet the Army’s needs for mobile howitzers, “whether it needs to be all built, assembled here in the states, or if they need to take an early delivery to meet some tactical requirements, or anywhere in between.” He also noted that around 40 percent of the K9’s global supply chain is already based in the United States.

While systems for the U.S. Army will closely resemble the base K9 model, Hanwha is open to adjustments. “We have a history of meeting user nation requirements,” Poppe said, adding that the company expects to include a U.S.-specific fire control system but “we need more input from the government before we go down the road of making changes.”

Hanwha is currently responding to the Army’s request for information on mobile tactical cannon systems, offering details on the wheeled K9, as well as the already operational K9A1 and the K10 ammunition resupply vehicle. “We have the ability to fill gaps in capability for the U.S. Army,” Pak said.

07 Oct 25. Textron Systems Corporation, a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, announced today the introduction of its DamoclesTM launched effect (LE), a cutting-edge system designed to deliver a significant strategic advantage in peer warfare environments. With Textron Systems’ advanced GEN2 Explosively Formed Penetrator (EFP), the Damocles LE delivers top-attack, electronic warfare, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities as either a ground- or air-delivered payload. Equipped with autonomous tracking capabilities and advanced artificial intelligence, the Damocles LE provides operators with advanced capabilities, while maintaining the human in the loop for mission supervision and decision-making. The precision unitary munition ensures accurate targeting, making it a highly effective tool in mission-critical scenarios. The Damocles LE also features a low acoustic signature, which enhances stealth and reduces detectability during operations. To further enhance operational safety, the system includes features to prevent unexploded ordnance (UXO), reducing the risk of hazardous remnants on the battlefield.  The Damocles LE is built with a modular open systems architecture (MOSA) approach, allowing other payloads to be integrated into the system to support various Concept of Operations (CONOPS), such as electronic warfare effects.

08 Oct 25. Germany consider Patriot air defence procurement with Switzerland. The German Defence Minister said joint production would reduce the immense cost for both countries. The German government welcomed the potential joint procurement of the coveted Patriot air defence system alongside Switzerland in a 2 October release. Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius welcomed his Swiss counterpart, the federal councilor Martin Pfister, to Bendlerblock in an inaugural visit. Over the next several weeks, the Bundeswehr confirmed that it will consider training Swiss troops to operate Patriot. This plan may work well for Germany, a nation that already operates the long range system in dwindling numbers. The move would help to quickly fill the widening gaps in its domestic air defence capability. Germany have already sent three Patriot launchers to protect Ukraine’s critical infrastructure from regular Russian strikes. In August 2025, Germany also announced that it will send further unspecified Patriot components to Ukraine within the next three months. Yet Germany still has use for the system at home even if Ukraine is ground down in a bitter struggle to intercept Russian salvos. In fact, German Patriot systems supported Polish F-16s, Dutch F-35s, and an Italian CAEW aircraft as part of a wider Nato response to the drone strikes that entered Poland on the night of 9 to 10 September. Since then, the alliance have reinforced their posture under Eastern Sentry following the incident and other developments. In return for shedding its air defence capability to Ukraine, an agreement had been reached with the US Department of Defense (now the Department of War) that Germany will be the first nation to receive newly produced, latest-generation Patriot systems at an accelerated pace. However, the financing will be provided by Germany, which means the country will take on a significant financial burden.

The Swiss perception

Switzerland, meanwhile, is eager to procure the American system too, having ordered five PAC-3 systems through the foreign military sales route in 2022. But in July 2025, the United States backtracked on the deal by reprioritising these systems to Ukraine instead. The neutral country has made unprecedented steps to build its defence posture. For example, the Swiss government agreed to join the German-led European Sky Shield Initiative this time last year. In July 2025, Switzerland continued to bolster its air defence contribution by signing a joint procurement deal with Germany to purchase medium range IRIS-T SLM air defence systems. Armasuisse will acquire five systems in this deal with the German manufacturer, Diehl Defence. Pistorius raised the opportunity for joint production, which he said would reduce the immense cost for both countries. A US government cost breakdown suggests that a single Patriot system – in all its parts – comes to around $1.1bn: $400m for the system and $690m for the missiles. The US Congressional Research Service, citing a Nato fact sheet, stated that a Patriot ‘battery’ has six major components: a power plant [two vehicle-mounted 150 kilowatt generators], radar set, engagement control station, launcher stations, antenna mast group, and interceptor missiles (PAC-2s and PAC-3s).

Patriot ecosystem in Europe

Bayern-Chemie, a leader in propulsion for the last 60-years and a subsidiary of the pan-European defence group MBDA Deutschland, is growing in capacity and output to meet Europe’s propellant needs. In late 2023, Army Technology learned that the company, which had been closely embedded in the production of rocket motors for American-made PAC-2 missiles during the Cold War, rejoined Raytheon’s next generation GEM-T missile supply chain with an ambition to serve as the nucleus of a new European missile hub.

“We’re building five new buildings, and we have a personnel growth in order to fulfill our contracts on time, on cost, on quality,” a spokesperson told Army Technology earlier this year.

This vision turned bleak in recent months after the United States’ withdrawal of longstanding security assets from Europe. Worse still, this political divide has incited a trend toward European strategic autonomy. Eric Beranger, the chief executive of MBDA, said the group will deliver fully sovereign systems to European customers when required to do so. However, the company still relies on US-made components for some of its weapon systems, including the Anglo-French Storm Shadow/SCALP cruise missile. Undeterred, the Bayern-Chemie spokesperson also confirmed that it still intends to serve as a European hub for PAC-2 propulsion systems, despite the burden of US tariffs – an alarming geopolitical development on which the subsidiary declined to comment. 06 Oct 25. US Army fields new breaching obscuration tech. US Army is fielding new devices to make it easier for engineers to obscure the battlefield during breaching operations, soldiers told Janes on 2 October. The M75 screening obscuration module (SOM) is the replacement for the legacy M56 Coyote. Used for one of the first times in 2025, the M75 weighs less, which could enable soldiers to utilise more devices in a flexible way to protect breaching operations, two 36th Engineer Brigade combat soldiers told Janes in an interview. The new SOM is more “sleek” than the previous system, said Staff Sergeant Jeremy Ephriam, a squad leader in the 36th Engineer Brigade, who used the SOM during a Project Convergence exercise in March. Unlike the M56 that was equipped onto the back of High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs), the M75 was able to be carried into a breaching operation by a TRV-150 tactical resupply drone during a training exercise at Fort Hood, Texas, on 1–3 October.

“It’s lighter weight, and you’re able to attach it onto a UAV [unmanned aerial vehicle] system, and able to actually take off,” he said.

M75 weighs about 60 lb. Combined with the jerry can that holds the fuel for the device, it weighs about 140 lb. The jerry can holds about a gallon and a half of kerosene oil and about a pint of diesel oil, SSgt Ephriam said. If temperatures are too low, the source of the smoke has to be switched to diesel but kerosene is the standard, he said. (Source: Janes)

Electro Optic Systems Holdings Limited (EOS) has been awarded a contract to supply Remote Weapon Systems (RWS) for the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) LAND 400 Phase 3 Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) program. The multi-year contract, valued at $108m, was awarded by Hanwha Defence Australia (HDA), the prime contractor to the ADF on LAND 400-3. The order includes the delivery of RWS, spare parts, training, and documentation. Under the agreement, EOS will deliver an enhanced R400 RWS, purpose-built to meet the Australian Army’s operational requirements and fully integrated with the AS21 Redback IFV. Manufacturing of the RWS will be undertaken at EOS’ facility in Canberra, drawing on a well-established national supply chain of more than 100 Australian companies. EOS’ RWS are world leading, proven in operational service with militaries in Australia, North America, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Renowned as a provider of weapon system technology with over 2,500 systems have sold globally, of which more than 700 have been delivered or are contracted for delivery to the Australian Army.

“This contract is a win for Australian industry, and we are delighted to be working with Hanwha Defence Australia on this critical project for Army” said Dr Andreas Schwer, CEO of EOS. “The work will be carried out here in Australia, supporting skilled jobs, strengthening our sovereign defence manufacturing base, and showcasing the capabilities of local suppliers on a national program of strategic importance.”

[auto-translated] Between September 29 and October 10, the 6th ‘Almogávares’ Parachute Brigade will lead the LONG PRECISION 25 (LG25) exercise, in which precision rifle teams from various allied countries – USA, Great Britain, Italy, France, Portugal, Brazil and Argentina – will participate, along with teams from the Spanish National Security Forces – Civil Guard and National Police. The annual LONG PRECISION exercise has become the most important exercise for the Spanish Armed Forces in terms of precision rifle training, its main objective being to train and integrate these teams in different scenarios and conflicts. The diversity of participants allows for the exchange of national and international techniques, tactics, procedures, and lessons learned, as well as mutual knowledge of new equipment and materials, to improve the specific capabilities of these units. The exercise consists of two phases: the first at the Casas de Uceda Manoeuvre and Training Area (Guadalajara) from September 29 to October 2, where emphasis will be placed on combat training in different situations; and the second at the San Gregorio Training Centre (Zaragoza) from October 3 to 10, where efforts will focus on field training in conventional and irregular combat scenarios, with integration and coordination among the participants. The 6th ‘Almogávares’ Parachute Brigade is the unit of the Spanish Army’s Land Force organised and prepared to conduct military operations that require an initial response to a crisis. The Spanish Army works to maintain its high operational readiness, expeditionary capabilities, and interoperability in order to rapidly integrate into national and international operational structures.
