30 May 25. Indian Army confirms induction of Tata RCWS. A Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) remote-controlled weapon station (RCWS) was seen for the first time on a T-72 main battle tank (MBT) during a visit by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Trishakti Corps, Lieutenant General Zubin A Minwalla, to an undisclosed forward post in Northern Sikkim to review the operational readiness. The RCWS is integrated with a day camera, a thermal camera, and a laser rangefinder (LRF) to enable both day and night operations. 29 May 25. US Army Down Selects New Grenade Launcher. Precision Grenadier System (PGS). The US Army announced the conclusion of its Precision Grenadier System (PGS) initiative with its selection of a system proposed by a team consisting of Barrett Firearms and MARS Inc. The PGS presented is a soldier-portable, shoulder-fired, semi-automatic, magazine-fed, integrated armament system capable of rapidly engaging and destroying personnel targets in defilade as well as unmanned drones at close range. The system uses a high-velocity 30×42mm projectile fired from a five-round, magazine-fed weapon equipped with pneumatic recoil attenuation to reduce forces passed to the gunner. It mounts a “smart” XM157 fire control optic customized for the 30mm by Precision Targets, allowing for accurate engagements from 30 to 500+ meters. Ammunition developed by AMTEC Corp for the weapon consists of a high-explosive Counter Defilade round, a Close Quarters Battle “shotgun” round, a counter-drone round, and an Armor-Piercing round. This array includes programmable air-burst high-explosive rounds, proximity-fused and point-detonating high explosives, as well as the specialized close-quarters combat round. The weapon is 861 mm (34”) long with a weight (including optic) of 6.3 kg (13.9 lbs). Barrett Firearms displayed its PGS at the Association of the United States Army exposition in October 2024, mounting the Vortex Optics XM157. This optic is the same variable 1-8×30 optic with a digital display overlay, built-in laser rangefinder, and ballistic calculator intended for use on the Army’s new 6.8mm XM7 rifles and XM250 squad automatic weapons. The PGS effort began in 2023 under the Army’s xTech Soldier Lethality program competition to find the next-generation individual soldier grenade launcher. The xTech Soldier Lethality program allowed industry to showcase their innovative concepts for a Precision Grenadier System (PGS) directly to the Department of Defense and receive initial government funding, potentially leading to a contract award or agreement of up to $2m. The Barrett Firearms/MARS, Inc. Squad Support Rifle System (SSRS) was their candidate when competing head-to-head with the FN America PGS-001. Both were down-selected by the Army into the final round of the competition, which originally included proposals from five teams—including a 25mm-caliber candidate weapon offered by a team of Colt and Northrop Grumman, utilizing programmable air-burst projectiles. The selection under the xTech Soldier Lethality program offers a step toward the possible consideration of the PGS to fill a formal Army requirement or adoption by other military end users. However, it does not necessarily ensure a government procurement or production order. The program is considered a Prototype Project Opportunity, with successful completion reducing risk should a formal program of record be established. 27 May 25. Libya enhances air defense with newly delivered Russian Tor-M2 missile system. On May 26, 2025, the Libyan National Army (LNA), led by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, held a military parade in Benghazi to commemorate the 11th anniversary of Operation Al-Karama. The event took place at a newly established military compound and included the public appearance of several assets that had not previously been seen in the country, including the Russian-made Tor-M2 short-range air defense missile system. The deployment of this system represents the first confirmed appearance of the Tor-M2 in Libya and drew immediate attention due to the open defiance of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1970, which has prohibited all arms exports to Libya since 2011. While the Tor-M2 dominated the attention of observers, the LNA also exhibited various other assets during the parade. These included over 120 Russian-made VPK Spartak mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles, a range of new Kamaz and Ural military trucks, and a selection of UAVs of Chinese origin, such as the Olitation VT370, QP537 VTOL, and SATUAV V15. Additionally, agricultural drones adapted for surveillance were seen. Artillery systems such as the BM-30 Smerch or Tornado-S were also displayed, along with legacy ballistic systems like the Scud-B and Luna-M. Legacy equipment from the Gaddafi era was also prominently featured. This included T-55 and T-72 tanks that had been retrofitted with anti-drone cage armor. BMP-1 and BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles were shown with additional protection added to their skirts, while ZSU-23-4 Shilka SPAAGs appeared with minor armor enhancements. The Emirati variant of the Pantsir-S1 system, mounted on a MAN chassis, was also present, but contrary to past parades, most Emirati-sourced equipment was conspicuously absent, hinting at a shifting alignment or diversification of military suppliers. The addition of the Tor-M2 to the LNA arsenal significantly enhances its short-range air defense capabilities and provides a modern solution against contemporary aerial threats, particularly tactical unmanned aerial systems and precision-guided munitions. The Tor-M2 is designed to engage low radar cross-section targets in high clutter environments and is considered effective against swarm attacks and fast maneuvering aircraft. Its presence implies that the LNA now possesses a system capable of defending both static assets and mobile formations from low- and medium-altitude attacks. This may change the operational calculus in eastern Libya, where air superiority and drone operations have played a major role in past engagements. The mobility and self-sufficiency of the system further allow it to be deployed independently in remote or contested areas, improving the LNA’s capacity to protect key military infrastructure and command elements. The origin of the Tor-M2 system in LNA possession remains officially undisclosed, but the display of this equipment suggests a deliberate transfer, either through direct foreign military support or indirect procurement via intermediaries. The presence of other Russian-made systems, including a Mi-26 heavy-lift helicopter and a BTR-82 armored personnel carrier, reinforces suspicions of state-level facilitation, directly or through proxies. Although Emirati-supplied Pantsir-S1 systems were seen in previous years, their reduced visibility during the 2025 parade, coupled with the prominence of Russian platforms, suggests a potential realignment of support or procurement priorities. Given the Tor-M2’s limited availability and high cost, its presence in Benghazi suggests that Moscow is seeking to secure a new foothold in the Mediterranean, particularly after reducing its presence in Syria. The appearance of the Tor-M2 may reflect such considerations, indicating a deeper relationship between Russian defense actors and the LNA. state-level facilitation, directly or through proxies. The Tor system, originally developed by the Soviet Union under the designation 9K330, entered service in the mid-1980s as a replacement for the earlier 9K33 Osa system. It was designed to protect front-line forces from a wide array of airborne threats, including aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles. Since then, several variants have emerged, including the Tor-M1 and the more advanced Tor-M2 family, which includes wheeled (Tor-M2K), export (Tor-M2E), modular (Tor-M2KM), and Arctic (Tor-M2DT) variants. Production of the Tor-M2 began in the 2010s, with the system entering Russian service in 2016 and serial production being confirmed by 2020. It was developed by the Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant Kupol and integrates the work of multiple Russian defense firms, including the Almaz-Antey Concern and missile developers from MKB Fakel and Vympel.
The Tor-M2 system is a fully autonomous and mobile short-range air defense missile system designed to detect, track, and engage various types of aerial targets in all weather conditions and under intense electronic countermeasure environments. It features a combat vehicle with a 360-degree rotating radar capable of tracking up to 48 targets and simultaneously engaging four. The vertical launch system accommodates sixteen 9M338K missiles, which are capable of intercepting targets flying at altitudes from 10 to 10,000 meters and ranges of 1 to 16 kilometers. Each missile is guided by a jam-resistant radio command system and has a maximum speed of 1,000 meters per second. The reaction time from detection to engagement is under five seconds, and the system is capable of operating while on the move. 27 May 25. UK to receive first upgraded M270 MLRS this year. The United Kingdom will receive its first upgraded M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) in 2025, Janes learnt at the Future Artillery 2025 conference held in London from 20 to 22 May. The first system will be delivered in the United States, where the upgrade is taking place and the British Army trains on MLRS. Work on the upgrade includes installation of improved armoured cabs, as well as upgraded automotive and launch mechanism components, at the US Army’s Red River Army Depot in Texas and Lockheed Martin’s facility in Camden, Arkansas. The British Army expected the upgrades to ensure that its land deep fires capability remains strong until 2050 and that the service has the technological capability to quickly meet current and future threats. The updated launchers will be able to fire the US Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), which has a range of 499 km. Military and industry sources told Janes on 22 May that the number of M270s upgraded had been increased from the initially planned 44 to 61 since the project was launched. 27 May 25. IHI supplies MCM USVs for Japan’s Mogami-class frigates. Japan’s IHI Corporation is supplying unmanned surface vessels (USVs) for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force’s (JMSDF’s) Mogami-class frigates. An IHI official told Janes at the DSEI Japan 2025 show held in Chiba from 21 to 23 May that the company delivered a USV, named Umikaze, for the Mogami-class frigates in 2024. The company is currently building three more Umikaze USVs for the frigates. These USVs will be delivered to the JMSDF by the end of 2025, the official said. Umikaze has a length of 11 m, a width of 3 m, a speed of 23 kt, and a “few hours of endurance”, the official added.
The official said that Umikaze will be used for mine countermeasures (MCM) operations. “The USV has an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) onboard. This is the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ (MHI’s) OZZ-5 UUV. The OZZ-5 and Umikaze will work together to detect and destroy mines,” the official added.
“Once a mine has been detected, Umikaze shoots a remote-controlled mine disposal charge to eliminate the mine,” the official said.
According to IHI, Umikaze is capable of automatic berthing and unberthing using an artificial intelligence (AI)-based GPS system. It has a cross-tracking error of less than 0.5 m. It is unclear which Mogami-class frigates will be equipped with the Umikaze USVs. The JMSDF currently has seven Mogami-class frigates in service, with the latest one commissioned in May. 26 May 25. India’s GRSE successfully completes indigenous naval gun’s sea trials. The gun demonstrated “pinpoint accuracy” using an advanced indigenous electro optical fire control system. India-based Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) has completed the indigenous 30mm Naval Surface Gun (NSG) sea acceptance firing trials of the indigenous 30mm Naval Surface Gun (NSG). During the trials, the gun demonstrated its performance with “pinpoint accuracy” using an advanced indigenous electro optical fire control system, the company said. The testing took place on one of GRSE’s Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC), designed and built by the company. For this project, the company collaborated with BHSEL and Elbit Systems Land. BHSEL and Elbit served as the technology and production partners involved in the NSG project. GRSE said the partnership has resulted in a system with 60% indigenous content, with expectations for a higher percentage in future orders. Prior to the sea trials, the NSG (30mm) completed quality testing at the factory level, followed by live target firing exercises at sea. In a post on X platform, GRSE said: “The Gun System is highly accurate and reliable and will be an extremely potent addition to the Indian Navy’s inventory of technologically superior weapon systems. GRSE is proud to have its products ranging from ‘Warships to Weapons’.” Earlier this month, the Indian Navy received ‘Arnala’, the first in a series of eight ASW SWCs, at L&T Shipyard in Kattupalli, Tamil Nadu. GRSE indigenously designed and built the vessel as part of a public-private collaboration with L&T Shipyard. The Ministry of Defence had signed contracts in April 2019 with GRSE and Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) for the construction of eight ships each under the Make in India initiative. 22 May 25. Diehl Defence, a leading system house for ground-based air defence, guided missiles and ammunition, has intensified its partnership with Thailand-based defence and security business RV Connex. Both companies signed a contract for the first delivery of target drones and services for live firing tests with Diehl Defence’s IRIS-T air-to-air-missile. Included in the contract are furthermore services for weapon airworthiness certification projects. This first delivery of JRV-01 target drones follows the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding by both companies in November 2023 that led the way to this deepened cooperation. Both companies will now commence the common evaluation of the system. RV Connex offers modern target representation systems such as the JRV-01 target drone system as well as all required services for its use. The JRV-01 target drone as well as the services will be used for enhancing the realism of IRIS-T live firing tests and for preparing the costumer’s training state to meet evolving security demands. Diehl Defence will benefit from the JRV-01 capabilities, providing a highly realistic threat simulation and ensuring that Diehl Defence’s testing protocols achieve the highest standard of reliability and performance. Together with RV Connex, Diehl Defence can now offer cost-efficient complete solutions for live firings without the need of complex test infrastructure and will be able to provide full support for live firings for IRIS-T customers. First test firings of IRIS-T on JRV-01 drones are already firmly planned. Both companies plan to expand their cooperation and range of services in the future. The partnership between Diehl Defence and RV Connex initially addresses the Asian market, but has the potential to be expanded to other markets worldwide. IRIS-T is a 5th-generation short-range air-to-air missile, fully integrated into Eurofighter/Typhoon, Gripen, F-16, EF-18, F-5E and Tornado. Currently, the integration of the IRIS-T missile into the Korea Aerospace Industries, Ltd. (KAI) KF-21 fighter aircraft is ongoing. Following this integration, the Republic of Korea signed the first contract with Diehl Defence in 2024 for the procurement of IRIS-T air-to-air missiles.

23 May 25. L3Harris Marks Major Milestone for New Solid Rocket Motor ‘Factories of the Future’ in Virginia. L3Harris Technologies (NYSE: LHX) has broken ground on the construction of five new solid rocket motor facilities in Virginia that will boost production to support key national defense programs. The new facilities will incorporate modular factory design, robotic flex cells, automated, progressive casting and improved handling and assembly throughout the production line.
“L3Harris’ growth in Virginia is another solid example of how we’re expanding our rocket motor manufacturing infrastructure to support the nation’s defense propulsion needs,” said Ken Bedingfield, President, Aerojet Rocketdyne, L3Harris. “Made possible through a Defense Production Act Title III cooperative agreement, this expansion will complement an existing 256,000 square feet of manufacturing space, supporting some of the most advanced propulsion research and production in the world.”
L3Harris’ site in Virginia hosts the company’s Center of Excellence for Propellant Research and Small to Medium-sized Solid Rocket Motor Production. The expansion includes a 12,000 square foot, state-of-the-art solid rocket motor cast and assembly facility, as well as a control room, facilities to support mixing and grinding operations and upgrades to the site’s motor testing capabilities. The consolidated cast and assembly building will centralize production of a critical program under one roof, reducing the distance motors travel during manufacturing by 90%.

L3Harris is also modernizing and expanding its solid rocket motor production in two other states.
