22 May 25. USAF confirms readiness of Minuteman III ICBM. The Minuteman III ICBM will be eventually replaced by the LGM-35A Sentinel. The US Air Force (USAF) has conducted a successful test launch of an unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The launch was executed by a joint team of Air Force Global Strike Command personnel. During the test, the Minuteman III ICBM equipped with a single Mark-21 High Fidelity Re-Entry Vehicle was launched as part of routine and periodic testing activities. The Western Test Range at Vandenberg served as the principal testing site for the Air Force Global Strike Command’s strategic deterrence systems. The trial is intended to confirm the safety, security, reliability and effectiveness of the US nuclear deterrent system.
US Air Force Global Strike Command commander general Thomas Bussiere said: “This ICBM test launch underscores the strength of the nation’s nuclear deterrent and the readiness of the ICBM leg of the triad. The missile’s re-entry vehicle travelled approximately 4,200 miles to reach its target at the US Army Space and Missile Defense Command’s Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site (RTS) in the Republic of the Marshall Islands, located at the Kwajalein Atoll. The RTS is equipped with advanced sensors, including high-fidelity metric and signature radars, optical instruments, and telemetry systems, all of which support the research, development, testing, and evaluation of US defence and space programmes. During these tests, RTS personnel collect radar, optical, and telemetry data during the terminal phase of flight to assess system performance.
RTS range director army lieutenant colonel Casey Rumfelt said: “Reagan Test Site is an indispensable national asset, uniquely equipped to support critical tests of our nation’s offensive and defensive systems, including all Glory Trip missions. Its specialised instrumentation and strategic location are unmatched globally, ensuring the effectiveness of our nation’s strategic deterrent.”
Airmen from each of the three missile wings were chosen to support the mission. Maintenance support was provided by teams from the 90th Missile Wing at F.E. Warren Force Base in Wyoming and the 341st Missile Wing at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana. Personnel from these bases maintain round-the-clock alert status for the country’s ICBM force, notes USAF. Data collected from the test launches will contribute to the continued evaluation of the ICBM programme, with input from the Department of Defense, Department of Energy, and US Strategic Command. The objective is to ensure the Minuteman III missile’s operational capability and the long-term effectiveness of the nuclear deterrent. As the US transitions to the LGM-35A Sentinel, the Minuteman III will remain in service to guarantee deterrence capabilities until the new system is fully operational. 22 May 25. Rheinmetall and Reliance enter into strategic partnership. Reliance Defence Ltd from India and Düsseldorf-based Rheinmetall AG have agreed on a strategic partnership in the field of ammunition. A memorandum of under¬standing to this effect has now been signed by representatives of both sides. The collaboration between the companies will include supply of explosives and propellants for medium and large caliber ammunition to Rheinmetall by Reliance. Furthermore the two companies intend to engage in joint marketing activities for selected products and are aiming to further extend their cooperation based on future opportunities. In order to support this collaboration, Reliance Defence Ltd will set up a greenfield manufacturing facility in the Watad Industrial Area, of Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. The Reliance manufacturing facility, one of the largest in South Asia, will have an annual capacity to produce up to 200,000 artillery shells, 10,000 tons of explosives and 2,000 tons of propellants. The cooperation gives Rheinmetall further access to important raw materials and secures not only its supply chains, also in the interests of its customers, but also creates further growth opportunities. In India, the new Reliance state-of-the-art facility will make a significant contribution to supplying the country’s armed forces. At the same time, it will play an important role in realizing the Indian government’s vision of achieving defence exports worth USD 5 bn and an economic power of USD 5 trillion.

Britain’s defence industry received yet another boost this week as 700 high-skilled jobs are set to be created following a £200m investment from European defence company MBDA at its site in Bolton. The announcement follows new Security and Defence Partnership signed at this week’s EU-UK Summit which will open the door to the EU’s new weapons scheme, leading to significant opportunities for the UK’s world-leading defence industries, driving growth and supporting 430,000 British jobs and livelihoods. This is the latest win for the UK’s leading defence and advanced manufacturing sectors and is further proof the Government’s Plan for Change is working. It also represents a major vote of confidence in the upcoming modern Industrial Strategy, which will drive investment in the UK’s high-growth sectors by giving businesses the certainty they need to commit to the UK.
Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds will visit MBDA’s Bolton site today (22 May) to formally announce the investment, which forms part of a wider £500m commitment from the company to expand its UK manufacturing and technologies.

The investment from MBDA, a leading missile systems manufacturer, will more than double its Bolton footprint by 2028 and grow its apprenticeship and STEM outreach programme, which already includes over 400 early-career professionals UK-wide. It also supports MBDA’s goal to deliver £10bn of UK exports by 2032, cementing the UK’s position as a leader in the manufacturing and export of complex weapons systems, and comes after the Government announced a £6.5bn complex weapons partnership with MBDA in July 2024.

The Government is backing the defence sector to deliver skilled jobs and growth across the country as part of its Plan for Change and is providing significant financial support to UK defence companies through UK Export Finance (UKEF). In March this year, the Chancellor announced a £2bn increase in UKEF’s Direct Lending capacity for defence exports, taking its overall lending capability to £10 bn. The UK is one of the largest exporters of defence equipment in the world, and in 2023 the UK won defence contracts worth £14.5bn.
21 May 25. British Army tests lightweight Javelin antitank weapon at record range. The British Army has successfully test-fired the Javelin’s Lightweight Command Launch Unit (LWCLU) at a record range, marking a milestone as the system evolves to counter longer-range threats. The testing, which was conducted this week, involved engaging a target at a distance of four kilometers, a first for the smaller and lighter weapon system.
“The successful engagement of a target at 4km today [in Salisbury, England] is a statement of intent – it represents a tangible demonstration of how seriously the British Army is taking the Chief of General Staff’s direction to double fighting power by 2027,” British Army Lt. Col. Chris Woods said in a press release.
The LWCLU is produced by the Javelin Joint Venture, a partnership between Raytheon (RTX) and Lockheed Martin. It is a component of the Javelin missile system designed to be 30% smaller and 25% lighter than the previous Block I Command Launch Unit, which enables soldiers to transport and deploy it faster, according to RTX. It is said to have doubled target detection and recognition capabilities than its predecessor, per the company’s website, and is compatible with all current, past and future Javelin variants. The United Kingdom is a key partner in the components supply chain of the Javelin and is expected to produce 3,960 rounds per year by 2026 and 900 LWCLUs by the end of the decade. The Javelin joint venture provides £56m ($75m) per year to the UK economy at current manufacturing rates, an amount that RTX says will increase. 21 May 25. Canada looking at investments in Golden Dome defense shield, PM Carney says. Canada is looking at potential investments in U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed $175bn Golden Dome missile defense shield, Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Wednesday. Trump said on Tuesday he had selected a design for the project and named a Space Force general to head the program, which is aimed at blocking threats from China and Russia. Carney, who won an April election in part by promising to stand up to the threat posed by Trump, said he had discussed the concept of the Golden Dome a couple of times with the president.
“We have an ability, if we so choose, to complete the Golden Dome with investments in partnership. And it’s something that we are looking at, and something that has been discussed at a high level,” he told a press conference.
“Is it a good idea for Canada? Well, it’s a good idea to have protection for Canadians and Canada.” Carney declined to say how much Canada might spend if it decided to take part in the Dome project. (Source: Reuters)
21 May 25. US: Missile defence programme will decrease regional tensions, socio-economic health risks. On 20 May, President Donald Trump selected a design for the Golden Dome missile defence system. The administration forecasts the programme will cost approximately USD 175 bn and will be operational by 2029. Earlier in May, the Congressional Budget Office reported that costs could reach USD 831bn over 20 years. An initial USD 25bn allocation forms part of a major budget bill, currently being debated in Congress; we assess the bill will likely pass in the short term with additional concessions (unlikely relating to the defence budget). Reports indicate the procurement process will involve a range of private contractors, presenting investment opportunities for defence and technology sector firms in the medium term. Furthermore, Trump emphasised that the programme would involve industries in Alaska, Florida, Georgia and Indiana; the scale of the investments will decrease long-term socio-economic health risks in these states. Both Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney acknowledged talks were ongoing about Canada potentially joining the initiative; this will decrease regional tensions in the short-to-medium term. 20 May 25. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth Statement on Golden Dome for America. The Department of Defense (DoD) welcomes President Trump’s announcement regarding the Golden Dome for America, a next-generation missile defense shield. This bold initiative, formalized in Executive Order (EO) 14186 on January 27, 2025, represents a historic investment in American security and fulfills our duty to protect the homeland first and foremost. The Golden Dome will progressively protect our nation from aerial attacks from any foe. Within the last four decades, our adversaries have developed more advanced and lethal long-range weapons than ever before, including ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missiles capable of striking the homeland with either conventional or nuclear warheads. Golden Dome is designed to leverage some past investments but will also use next-generation technology to defend against the evolving, and complex threat landscape. In response to the President’s bold vision and clear direction, the Department has developed a draft architecture and implementation plan for a Golden Dome system of systems that will protect our homeland from a wide range of global missile threats. This historic investment builds on two of the Department of Defense’s three main objectives: rebuilding our military capability and re-establishing deterrence. The Golden Dome builds on what have always been strengths of the United States: bold vision, innovation, and cutting-edge technology. As the President stated in the EO, the Golden Dome will include space-based interceptors and sensors. Some U.S. technology in space such as space-based sensors and air and missile defense exist today, but all of the systems comprising the Golden Dome architecture will need to be seamlessly integrated.
Golden Dome will be fielded in phases, prioritizing defense where the threat is greatest. The DoD is working with the Office of Management and Budget to develop a plan to fund recommended capabilities arising from the President’s directive, allowing sufficient time for consideration by the President before finalization of the Fiscal Year 2026 (FY 2026) Budget. We are working with Congress to secure $25B of funding in the One Big Beautiful reconciliation bill for critical capabilities necessary to ensure the protection of the U.S. homeland from the aerial threats of today and tomorrow. We look forward to continuing that work with Congress to secure funding for critical capabilities necessary in the FY26 budget request. The United States will continue to enhance its existing capabilities to provide a thorough layered defense for its homeland. 20 May 25. Britain’s F-35s to be deprived of long-range missiles ‘until early 2030s’. Fresh delays to Spear 3s raise concerns over UK defence capabilities Britain’s most advanced warplanes will not be able to shoot missiles at ground targets until at least 2030, ministers have admitted. The F-35B stealth jet was originally set to gain long-range Spear 3 missiles capable of taking out tanks, air defences and bunkers from this year, a target that was later pushed back to 2028. But in an embarrassing blow to the Ministry of Defence, procurement minister Maria Eagle has revealed their deployment will now be delayed until the “early 2030s”. It leaves British F-35B pilots reliant on dropped bombs to strike ground targets, with one expert comparing the situation to the dangerous missions carried out by Lancaster bomber crews in the Second World War. The aircraft shared by the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force are currently only equipped with Paveway IV precision-guided bombs, along with medium and short-range air-to-air missiles. By comparison, the British-made Spear 3 would allow pilots to launch air-to-ground strikes on targets more than 60 miles away. Critics warned the delay risks leaving Britain underpowered at a time when the heads of the Army and MI6 have called for the military to be prepared for war with Russia within a few years. 19 May 25. Australia boosts defence with PLM initiative. Mission Talon Strike focuses on developing medium-range precision loitering munition systems with kinetic payloads. The Australian Government has launched Mission Talon Strike, an initiative focused on fostering the development of an affordable precision loitering munition (PLM) within the local industry. This PLM is intended to fill the operational gap between short and long-range munitions, providing ground forces with improved tactical options against potential threats. The Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator (ASCA) is actively pursuing technological solutions through this initiative, which aims to equip the Australian Defence Force (ADF) with enhanced capabilities. The central challenge posed by this mission is to identify methods for engaging land targets from a medium range using cost-effective and deployable loitering munitions. ASCA is mandated to execute a swift procurement process as part of its Mission Talon-Strike, which operates under an acquisition framework previously sanctioned by the Vice Chief of the Defence Force. In line with this directive, ASCA has issued a Request for Tender (RFT) inviting industry submissions for the provision of a PLM solution. To support this goal, the initiative is in search of appropriate flight platform vehicles along with their corresponding launching systems, as well as transport and storage solutions. These components are essential for conducting tests and obtaining certification for the PLM systems. The procurement process under Mission Talon-Strike emphasises the need for these systems to be supplied in quantities that meet the testing and certification requirements set by defence.
Australian Minister for Defence Industry Pat Conroy said: “The launch of Mission Talon Strike by ASCA is about developing a priority capability at an accelerated pace. Mission Talon Strike’s announcement comes on the heels of the market approach for ASCA’s recent launch of Mission Syracuse, which aims to enhance the ADF’s counter-drone capabilities.
Mission Syracuse is dedicated to the rapid development of advanced technology options that can be integrated with the ADF’s existing counter small uncrewed aerial systems. Both Mission Talon Strike and Mission Syracuse represent a concerted effort to provide the ADF with advanced, integrated solutions to counteract potential threats. Mission Syracuse represents the subsequent endeavour for ASCA, coming after the successful allocation of contracts to two Australian companies in January 2025 under Mission Black Thorn. This previous initiative, Mission Black Thorn, was centred on the rapid development of technologies aimed at degrading integrated air and missile defence systems of prospective adversaries. According to a report from GlobalData, Australia’s defence budget in 2024 stood at $37.8bn. It is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 6% during 2025-2029. 19 May 25. FEINDEF 2025: Instalaza develops upgraded C90 shoulder-fired weapon. Spanish weapons manufacturer Instalaza unveiled a reusable, shoulder-fired weapon system designed specifically for the Fuerza de Infantería de Marina (marine corps), Janes was informed at the International Defence and Security Exhibition (FEINDEF) 2025 held from 12 to 14 May in Madrid. The ‘Hispano’ is based on the company’s in-service C90 solution, which continues to be used by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). However, it features a series of upgrades specifically requested by the marine corps, according to Santiago Galindo, exports/sales and corporate image manager at Instalaza. Upgrades include a new pistol grip with trigger mechanism as well as the new ‘Vosel H’ fire-control system (FCS), which enables the munition to accurately hit point targets out to a maximum effective range of 650 m. The Hispano also offers end-users significant weight savings, with the launcher and munition weighing 5.7 kg, and the FCS 1.7 kg, including batteries, Galindo said. The Vosel H FCS, specifically designed for Hispano, features day and thermal imaging cameras, a gyroscope, laser rangefinder, and a ballistic computer, which the company said considers the environmental conditions for the ammunition’s propellant. Hispano is capable of firing any legacy C90 ammunition (anti-tank, anti-bunker, dual purpose, and enhanced blast) in addition to extended range anti-tank munitions capable of hitting targets up to 650 m. Galindo told Janes the Spanish Marine Corps would be undertaking live-fire trials in Spain this week and suggested a contract could be signed for an undisclosed number of munitions by the end of 2025. The first product to be announced by Tiberius Aerospace is Sceptre (TRBM 155HG) – a revolutionary new 155mm ramjet extended-range precision-guided ballistic munition reaching speeds of Mach 3.5 and altitudes in excess of 65,000 feet (beyond jamming range). Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control President Tim Cahill, along with the General Authority for Military Industries (GAMI) Assistant Deputy Nawaf Albawardi, and Wasim Attieh President of Arabian International Company for Steel Structures (AIC) recently met at AIC’s Jeddah facility to review the shared progress towards AIC’s efforts to produce locally-sourced components for the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) Weapon System. During the visit, the team celebrated the first completion of locally-produced components for the THAAD launcher, highlighting the ongoing collaboration and achievements in local manufacturing. This achievement showcases AIC’s expertise in precision welding and the effective application of advanced manufacturing techniques. Rheinmetall has confirmed Telford as the home of its new leading-edge large-calibre barrel production facility – marking a bold step in re-establishing sovereign defence manufacturing in the UK and delivering on its strategic partnership with the Ministry of Defence (MoD), under the Trinity House Agreement. This major investment positions Rheinmetall at the heart of Britain’s defence industrial revival, supporting both the modernisation of the British Army and the UK’s role in strengthening NATO’s collective readiness. The Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) recently released an unclassified assessment titled “Golden Dome for America: Current and Future Missile Threats to the U.S. Homeland” to depict threats a sophisticated missile defense system for the United States would defend against—this product presents the agency’s unclassified intelligence on adversary missile threats and capabilities. According to a picture released by the North Korean state news agency on May 17, 2025, North Korea has revealed the development of a new air-to-air missile and aerial bombs converted into precision-guided munitions. These weapons were highlighted during large-scale air force drills attended by the North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un, marking a significant step forward in the country’s efforts to modernize its air combat capabilities. The newly unveiled air-to-air missile exhibits a design remarkably similar to the Chinese PL-12, a beyond-visual-range active radar-guided missile widely used by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force. 16 May 25. Royal Navy warship destroys supersonic missile in historic first. One of the UK’s most advanced warships has obliterated a supersonic missile in a historic first for the Royal Navy in a test off the coast of Scotland. In a burst of fire and smoke, Type 45 destroyer HMS Dragon launched a specially-modified Sea Viper missile at an incoming high-speed target which was emulating the kind of advanced threats seen around the globe today. It marks the first time the Royal Navy has faced down this kind of target – one that is significantly more challenging as it flies faster and carries out corkscrew and weave manoeuvres. The Sea Viper launched was a special telemetry version, designed to record measurements and valuable data to inform future operations. The missile firing took place as part of the largest live-firing exercise in Europe this year – known as Exercise Formidable Shield 25 – which is proving the Portsmouth-based ship’s ability to defend herself and other ships around her from attack, including from swarms of drones.
“The successful Sea Viper firing as part of Formidable Shield 25 is a huge moment for HMS Dragon,” Commander Iain Giffin, HMS Dragon’s Commanding Officer, said. “Not only does it prove that Dragon’s world leading air defence capability functions as it should following an extensive maintenance period, but it also proves our ability to integrate and operate alongside NATO allies and partners. Training alongside ships, aircraft and land forces from 11 nations in this complex, multi-domain exercise ensures that we maintain our fighting edge against evolving Hi and Low-tech threats.”
Just two and a half seconds after erupting from HMS Dragon’s silo, the missile accelerated to more than four times the speed of sound – otherwise known as Mach 4. High above the water, it then manoeuvred at G-forces which no human being could withstand, to close in and destroy the target.
Sea Viper is the combination of the Sampson radar system – the distinctive spinning spiked ball on top of a Type 45 destroyer’s main mast – and the Aster missile system which sits in a silo on the ship’s forecastle. The system tracks aircraft and other objects across thousands of cubic miles of airspace over the Hebrides range in western Scotland, identifies threats, and destroys them when necessary.
“Seeing how far Dragon has progressed, both within the Warfare Department as well as the wider ship, is impressive,” Lieutenant Commander Sarah Kaese, Dragon’s Senior Warfare Officer – who is on exchange from the Royal Australian Navy. “Formidable Shield has been both a significant challenge and opportunity for Dragon to come together as a warfighting unit and integrate into a task group developing air defence capability.”
Formidable Shield sees naval forces battle against uncrewed air and surface systems, subsonic, supersonic and ballistic targets, bringing together allied ships and land-based air defences and air forces – all working together to prove themselves a credible combined combat power. Almost every participant is due to launch missiles over the course of the month-long workout. 16 May 25. Taiwan Defense Missiles. The Republic of China – Taiwan Ministry of National Defense (MND) confirmed on May 13th the debut live-firing of the newly developed Land Sword II or Lujian II air defense missile system. This system has been locally developed and manufactured, further emphasizing the country’s commitment to establishing greater domestic reliance for defense systems. The Land Sword II is derived from the Sky Sword II or Tien Chien II (TC-2), an air-to-air missile with beyond visual range capabilities developed by the government’s National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST). The baseline Sky Sword II is a medium-range air-to-air missile (AAM) originally developed for and integrated onto Taiwan’s Ching‐Kuo Indigenous Defense Fighter (IDF) aircraft. The TC-2 features an inertial navigation system, a datalink for mid-course guidance, and active pulse Doppler radar homing for terminal guidance. It boasts an intercept speed of Mach 6. The missile has undergone several improvements since its initial deployment. Notably, the TC-2 has also been adapted as the TC-2N for naval applications, where it is installed on ships in a quad-pack configuration for deck mounting, providing air defense capabilities. The land-based Land Sword II utilizes this sealed container-launcher pack concept, mounted on the bed of a tactical truck. This configuration provides four ready-to-fire missiles in two twin pods. In its ground-launched role, the missiles reportedly have an effective range of 15 km (9.3 mi) and can engage targets across a full 360 degrees from the launcher. The launcher and missiles are designed to accept and integrate external detection and tracking data. Lujian II launchers have been observed operating in conjunction with the locally developed CS/MPQ-90 Bee Eye passive electronically scanned array (PESA) radar. According to the MND, the live-firings were conducted at the Jiupeng base by the 43rd and 21st Artillery Commands as part of the ongoing Shen Gong (Divine Bow) Exercise. The three missile launches successfully intercepted and destroyed aerial drone targets, validating the system’s effectiveness against not only aircraft but also cruise missiles and drones. The Army reportedly intends to field around thirty Lujian II systems, organized into three batteries.
