Elon Musk’s SpaceX and two partners have emerged as frontrunners to win a crucial part of President Donald Trump’s “Golden Dome” missile defense shield, six people familiar with the matter said. Musk’s rocket and satellite company is partnering with software maker Palantir (PLTR.O), opens new tab and drone builder Anduril on a bid to build key parts of Golden Dome, the sources said, which has drawn significant interest from the technology sector’s burgeoning base of defense startups. 17 Apr 25. Dutch 11th Airmobile Brigade re-activates 120 mm mortars. The Royal Netherlands Army’s (RNLA’s) 11th Airmobile Brigade has re-activated 120 mm mortars after a 13-year hiatus, the Dutch Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on its website on 16 April. The occasion was marked by the mortars officially re-entering service with a first shot at the RNLA’s artillery firing range in ‘t Harde. The service now has two mortar platoons, one for the 11th Airmobile Brigade’s 11th Infantry Battalion in Schaarsbergen and one for its 13th Infantry Battalion in Assen. The Dutch MoD said the mortar platoons will now receive intensive training. In 2027 the 11th Airmobile Brigade will provide a fully operational air manoeuvre task force numbering 600 troops for rapid deployment by fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft to crisis or conflict areas. The 120 mm mortars will provide heavy fire support that can be moved by Chinook transport helicopter. The RNLA’s 43rd Mechanised Brigade is equipped with 81 mm mortars, while all other army brigades and the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps (RNLMC) have that calibre as well as 60 mm mortars, according to Janes World Armies. The RNLA and RNLMC use M6 C-640 Mk1 60 mm, L-16 81 mm, and MO-120 RT 120 mm mortars, the latter two of which are towed. In addition, the Netherlands plans to procure CV90 Granatkastarpansarbandvagn (Grkpbv) 90 Mjölner 120 mm armoured mortar vehicles, Janes learnt at Defence iQ’s Future Mortar Systems (FMS) 2024 conference held in London on 29–30 October. 17 Apr 25. U.S. Deploys NMESIS Anti-ship Missile System to Northern Philippines Amid Rising China Tensions. On April 16, 2025, the U.S. Department of Defense confirmed the deployment of the Navy-Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System (NMESIS) to the Philippines, marking the system’s first-ever presence on Philippine soil. This deployment comes in direct support of Exercise Balikatan 25, the long-standing bilateral military exercise between the United States and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), taking place from April 21 to May 9, 2025. The move underscores Washington’s commitment to regional deterrence, maritime security, and allied readiness in the face of rising tensions in the South China Sea. The arrival of the U.S. NMESIS mobile anti-ship missile system in Northern Luzon marks a strategic leap forward in the modernization and interoperability of the U.S.-Philippines defense alliance. More importantly, it signals a clear message to regional observers, particularly China, about the resolve and readiness of both nations to deter aggression in the Indo-Pacific. The NMESIS system, fielded by the U.S. Marine Corps’ 3rd Marine Littoral Regiment (3d MLR), introduces an advanced ground-based maritime strike capability specifically designed for littoral operations. It integrates the Naval Strike Missile (NSM), a stealthy, long-range precision weapon capable of penetrating enemy defenses and striking naval targets at distances exceeding 185 kilometers, with the Remotely Operated Ground Unit for Expeditionary (ROGUE) Fires—an unmanned launcher vehicle mounted on a Joint Light Tactical Vehicle chassis. This platform provides mobility, survivability, and precision strike capabilities, enabling forces to conduct sea denial missions from remote or contested islands. As a combat system, NMESIS plays a vital role in enabling the U.S. Marine Corps’ Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations (EABO) concept, which emphasizes the rapid deployment and dispersal of small, lethal, and agile units across maritime chokepoints. Once deployed, NMESIS can operate autonomously, using off-board sensors for targeting data, and connect to a multi-domain kill web through secure data links, dramatically enhancing the joint force’s ability to detect, track, and engage enemy surface combatants. Its employment in the Philippine archipelago, especially across key terrain like the Batanes Islands and Northern Luzon, provides significant sea control leverage along the Luzon Strait.

In Balikatan 25, NMESIS will be used in simulated maritime strike operations across these territories—areas of significant strategic value due to their proximity to the South China Sea and the Western Pacific. U.S. and Philippine Marines, supported by U.S. Army aviation and Air Force airlift assets, will airlift and position NMESIS launchers across island terrain, working together to establish Fires Expeditionary Advanced Bases. These locations serve as launch points for simulated long-range anti-ship strikes. Although no live missiles will be fired, the exercise will validate key aspects of deployment, targeting, and coordination in real-world terrain under realistic scenarios. The deployment of the NMESIS is taking place against the backdrop of heightened tensions with China, whose expanding presence and military activities in the South China Sea have provoked widespread concern. In recent months, the People’s Liberation Army Navy, Coast Guard, and maritime militia have intensified their incursions into Philippine waters, including confrontations near the Ayungin Shoal and contested areas such as Scarborough and the Spratly Islands. These assertive moves have prompted Manila to bolster its coastal defense posture and pursue stronger military cooperation with the United States.

During his visit to Manila on March 28, 2025, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth reaffirmed Washington’s unwavering commitment to the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty, stressing that the United States would respond to any armed attack against Philippine forces in the South China Sea. He described the Balikatan exercises as “a defense rehearsal” and a clear manifestation of allied unity against coercion and military pressure in the region. The strategic deployment of NMESIS along the Luzon Strait dramatically enhances the allied deterrence posture. This maritime corridor, one of the world’s busiest and most contested sea lanes, is a crucial transit point for Chinese naval operations entering or exiting the Western Pacific. By placing advanced anti-ship weapons on island terrain within range of this corridor, the U.S. and Philippine forces gain a powerful tool for sea denial—capable of holding hostile vessels at risk without deploying major surface combatants. 3rd Marine Littoral Regiment, based in Oahu, Hawaii, is a purpose-built formation under the Marine Corps’ Force Design 2030. Its core tasks include reconnaissance and counter-reconnaissance, integration of fires, and establishment of expeditionary advanced bases in support of naval campaigns. Structured for distributed, low-signature operations in highly contested environments, 3d MLR is uniquely equipped to operate along the first island chain and perform joint operations with partner forces. During Balikatan 25, it will conduct a full spectrum of littoral warfare operations, including air and missile defense, amphibious transport, and maritime surveillance alongside the Philippine Marine Corps. Now in its 40th iteration, Exercise Balikatan symbolizes a maturing strategic alliance shaped by contemporary security threats and shared national interests. The inclusion of NMESIS reflects a significant expansion in combat readiness, technological integration, and joint operational capability between the two countries. It also illustrates the Philippines’ growing role as a frontline state in the U.S.-led regional security framework—an essential partner in deterring coercion and maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Col. John G. 16 Apr 25. U.S. Navy, ROK Navy Complete Combined Mine Warfare Exercise. The U.S. Navy and the Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) concluded Korean Spring Exercise, April 16, 2025. The exercise ran from April. 7-16 off the southeastern coast of the Republic of Korea. It is part of an annual series of exercises between the U.S. Navy and ROKN designed to increase proficiency in mine countermeasures operations between the two forces.

“Operating together in a combined environment is an outstanding opportunity for us to learn about how we each take on this complex mission set,” said Capt. Antonio L. Hyde, commodore, Mine Countermeasures Squadron (MCMRON) 7. “This exercise continues to show the region that the U.S. and Korean navies are committed to preserving a free and open Indo-Pacific region.”

During the 10-day exercise, U.S. Navy and ROKN units worked together to clear a route for ships through a simulated minefield using mine hunting, detection and neutralization capabilities, which included an underwater detonation of a simulated mine. ROKN Mine Squadron 52 and MCMRON 7 commanders partnered throughout the exercise to direct mine hunting tasks for U.S. Navy and ROKN units. This training allowed U.S. and ROK Navy participants to practice communicating and operating as a bilateral team, while learning to maximize their cumulative mine hunting capability.

“Nine days of comprehensive mine warfare exercise allowed ROK-US navies to improve operational capabilities and explore future directions for mine warfare development based on lessons learned.” said Capt. Lee Taek-seon, commodore, ROK Mine Squadron 52. “We will continue to conduct practical mine warfare trainings to further strengthen our abilities to protect major ports and sea lines of communications in case of emergency.”

Warrior, personnel from Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit (EODMU) 5, two MH-53E Helicopters from HM-15 Det 3A and staff assigned to MCMRON 7 were the U.S. Navy units that participated in Korean Spring Exercise. ROKN participants in the exercise were two Ganngyeong-class minehunter ships, ROKS Ganggyeong (MHC-561) and ROKS Gimhwa (MHC-567); two Yangyang-class minehunter ships, ROKS Yangyang (MSH-571) and ROKS Hongseong (MSH-576); one Wonsan-class minelayer ship ROKS Wonsan (MLS-560); one Nampo-class minelayer ship (MLS-570); one Cheonghaejin-class submarine rescue ship, ROKS Cheonghaejin (ASR-21); a Chamsuri-class patrol boat; one submarine; one MH-60 helicopter and two explosive ordnance disposal companies. 15 Apr 25. US Army, Lockheed conduct first PrSM flight from MLRS M270A2 launcher. With an open systems architecture and modularity, the PrSM is engineered to strike targets beyond 400km. The US Army and Lockheed Martin have successfully completed the short-range production qualification test launch of the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) from an M270A2 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) launcher. The test launch from the launcher was conducted for the first time at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.  The Increment 1 missile demonstrated its ability to accurately engage multiple targets, including a radar installation and a rotary wing aircraft, with lethal precision.   Lockheed notes that the short-range flight also validated the missile’s manoeuvrability and precision performance under high-stress operational conditions.  Lockheed Martin precision fires launchers and missiles vice president Carolyn Orzechowski said: “This test shows that PrSM works seamlessly with the Army’s tracked M270A2 launcher, which fires the same munitions as HIMARS.”  With an open systems architecture and modularity, the PrSM is engineered to strike targets beyond 400km.  It is also compatible with High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) family of launchers.  The HIMARS launcher is capable of carrying six guided multiple launch rocket system (GMLRS) rockets, two PrSMs, or one Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS), and is designed to deploy the full suite of MLRS munitions.   This flexibility provides artillery units with a new long-range capability that supports a range of military forces.

Orzechowski added: “While PrSM’s primary mission is long range fires, Lockheed Martin validates accuracy and reliability of the missile even at the shortest distances before we provide it to war fighters.”

L3Harris Technologies (NYSE: LHX) has completed a $125m expansion at its space manufacturing facility in Fort Wayne to support the Department of Defense’s urgent need for on-orbit technology to defend the homeland by building a “Golden Dome” around the United States. L3Harris’ investment in facilities in Indiana will enable these strategic capabilities to be delivered in the later half of the President’s second term. Members of Indiana’s congressional delegation participated in the dedication ceremony today for the expanded 95,000-square-foot facility, which will support engineering, integration, testing and program management for L3Harris’ missile defense programs.

“The new investments and construction by L3Harris in Fort Wayne are a crucial step in making the defensive capabilities of our country ‘Made in America’ again,” said Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-IN). “The incoming jobs to our community will boost our local economy to the tune of ms of dollars. More companies should follow L3Harris’ lead in returning their operations to our shores and uplifting the communities that made them what they are today.”

15 Apr 25. Hanwha Aerospace has signed a term sheet agreement to establish a joint venture with WB Group, Poland’s largest private defense company, to manufacture guided missiles in Poland for the Homar-K Multiple Rocket Launch System. The agreement marks a key milestone in Hanwha’s localization strategy, reinforcing its long-term commitment to Poland’s defense modernization and industrial development. It also underscores Hanwha’s expanding role as a strategic partner for NATO and EU member states. Under the agreement, Hanwha Aerospace will hold a 51% majority stake in the new entity, with WB Electronics (a WB Group subsidiary) holding the remaining 49%. The joint venture will begin operations following approval from Poland’s Antimonopoly Committee. The agreement was signed by Piotr Wojciechowski, Chairman of WB Group, and Mr. Billy Boo-hwan Lee, Head of Hanwha Aerospace PGM Business Group. Among the high-profile participants at the ceremony were Mr. Paweł Bejda, Secretary of State and Deputy Minister of Defense; Brig. Gen. Artul Kuptel, Ph.D., Head of Armaments Agency; Mr. Hoonmin Lim, Ambassador of the Korean Embassy in Poland; and Mr. Peter Bae, CEO of Hanwha Aerospace Europe.

“With this term sheet agreement, we have just taken the most important step toward establishing our joint venture with WB Group. We believe the joint venture will contribute to the growth of Polish industrial capability, as well as to the modernization of the Polish Armed Forces. “The term sheet shows a clear roadmap for building a missile production site in Poland. The cooperation between WB Electronics and Hanwha Aerospace is a demonstration of how the Polish and Korean industries can work together and how each company complements the other. The factory will increase Poland’s independence in ammunition production and provide huge potential for industrial and economic growth. We expect the plant to become a supply centre not only for the Polish armed forces but also for the armies of other European countries. I want to point out that it will be a Polish company operating by Polish law and paying taxes in the country. The joint venture will employ Polish engineers and workers and create a supply chain in Poland and the broader European market.” said Piotr Wojciechowski, Chairman of WB Group.

The joint venture will be responsible for fulfilling the requirements for producing 80km-range CGR-80 guided missiles for the Homar-K, a Polish version of the K239 Chunmoo MRLS, under another executive contract for the Homar-K. It is also focused on jointly marketing the guided missiles to neighboring countries in Europe. Hanwha Aerospace has signed two executive contracts since 2022 on the supply of 290 Chunmoo rocket artillery systems that can fire both 80km- and 290km-range guided rockets. The Homar-K program exemplifies Hanwha’s successful localization efforts in Poland, featuring extensive Polish defense industry participation. Under this program, Polish defense companies oversee the integration and assembly of the long-range rocket launcher system mounted on Polish Jelcz 8×8 chassis. The Homar-K also incorporates the WB-developed Topaz combat management system and other Polish components and subsystems.

13 Apr 25. Australian Army soldiers have begun fielding the next-generation service pistol, marking a major milestone for the LAND 300 Lethality System Program. Brisbane’s Gallipoli Barracks-based 7th Brigade is the first operational unit to be equipped with the new Sidearm Weapon System (SWS) after a successful testing program conducted by NIOA and Defence’s Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG). The SWS consists of the Sig Sauer P320 pistol, Romeo 2 red dot sight, a white light torch, holster and retractable lanyard. It replaces the long-serving Browning Mk3 pistol and will be known in service as the F9 pistol. Additional equipment includes a simulation pistol for the WTSS (Weapon Training Simulation System), a paint marking round conversion kit and red coloured weighted replica for use as part of Army Combative Program (ACP) training. Components of the system are supplied by various Australian companies with NIOA bringing together products from five major suppliers to integrate and deliver to Defence as a fully certified mission system ahead of schedule. The successful fielding to Army’s School of Infantry in December 2024 paved the way for the rollout of the F9 pistol to the first operational units of 7th Brigade in February. Soldiers have commenced conversion training, consisting of introductory lessons, dry manual handling drills, simulated firing using Defence’s Weapon Training Simulation System (WTSS) and live range firing.

NIOA Australia-New Zealand CEO Ben James said NIOA’s project team was on hand throughout the rollout to provide armourer familiarisation training, expertise and advice as well as validating the training against the analysis of training requirements delivered earlier as part of the project, earning high praise from Defence. “With CASG coordinating the rollout, and NIOA personnel delivering directly from our facility to user units, the distribution of the F9 pistol to the first units has been a huge success,” he said.

13 Apr 25. Lockheed Martin Doubles HIMARS Rocket Launcher Production Amid Global Demand for Precision Artillery. On April 11, 2025, Lockheed Martin Europe announced via its official X (formerly Twitter) account that the company has successfully doubled the annual production rate of the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), reaching 96 launcher vehicles per year. This dramatic increase in production underscores the system’s rising global demand, fueled largely by its battlefield success in Ukraine and the strategic realignment of military priorities among NATO allies and other defense partners. The American-made M142 HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) rocket/missile launcher vehicle has proven to be a game-changer in modern warfare. Originally developed in the late 1990s as a lighter, more mobile variant of the M270 MLRS, the HIMARS gained global notoriety for its devastating precision and operational flexibility. Mounted on a 6×6 wheeled chassis, it can rapidly deploy, fire, and relocate—making it a highly survivable and effective long-range artillery asset. The platform is capable of launching six GMLRS (Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System) rockets or a single Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missile, with plans to transition to the new Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) system in the coming years. The renewed surge in HIMARS production is directly tied to the system’s operational effectiveness during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has opened a new state-of-the-art integration center in Madison, Alabama, in support of the United States Army’s accelerated modernization plan for air and missile defense. The new Enhanced Production and Integration Center (EPIC) builds on the company’s ability to scale production and manufacture critical capabilities at speed, expanding capacity for high rate production programs.

  • The new facility will manage component integration for the Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS).
  • With this expansion, production capacity for the ready-now IBCS command and control system can increase up to 96 Engagement Operation Centers, 96 Integrated Collaborative Environments and 192 Integrated Fire Control Network relays each year.
  • EPIC boasts more than 129,500 square feet of flexible production space and totals 175,500 square feet of covered production space.
  • The facility also has 35,000 square feet of office space and can accommodate over several hundred employees, growing Northrop Grumman’s economic impact in Alabama.

The facility will ensure delivery of cutting-edge solutions and meets fielding quantities and objectives for both domestic and Foreign Military Sales production.

Details on IBCS:

IBCS is a revolutionary command and control system that unifies current and future systems regardless of source, service or domain. Through its network-enabled, modular, open and scalable architecture, IBCS fuses sensor data for a single actionable picture of the full battlespace. This ready-now capability gives warfighters more time to make decisions on how best to defeat threats and is a foundational element for enabling joint and coalition, multi-domain operations. IBCS is in production, currently fielded in Poland, and planned for fielding in Combatant Commands in Europe and the Indo-Pacific to include Guam as part of the U.S. Army program of record for integrated air and missile defense modernization.
