14 Jul 16. DVD 2016 – Registration Open. DVD2016 will be held on 7-8 September 2016 at Millbrook Proving Ground, Bedfordshire. As a previous attendee, it is hoped that you will join us again. This is the single largest MOD Land Equipment sponsored event taking place this year and is open to industry personnel working in the Land Equipment environment or those wishing to gain a greater understanding of its role and function.
There will be three distinct themes at DVD2016:
• Strike. The in-service and future platforms required to deliver the Army’s new Strike capability as well as those needed to return the Army to warfighting at the Divisional level capability.
• Reducing Logistic Need. The technologies and innovations required to minimise the Army’s logistic need within the contemporary strategic environment.
• Ready Forces. The capabilities to enable the right forces, at the right readiness standards, to deal with the full range of operational demands that could be placed upon them.
This thematic format will more clearly define the visitor journey and provide added value to the military, industry and the acquisition community that attend the two day event.
Now in its 13th year, DVD2016 will once again be a jointly-organised event by Army Headquarters and DE&S Land Equipment and continues to reflect the Army’s new responsibility for equipment. This will be the perfect opportunity to see the vision of Army 2020 and a range of the elements of which it is comprised.
DVD2016 Visitor Registration is now live and all those wishing to attend should register on the Visitor page of the website www.theevent.co.uk. Your details have been pre-populated please check/update as appropriate and click the register button to obtain your e-ticket. More detailed information about the event can also be found through the website.

12 Jul 16. China’s Norinco develops new Type 96 MBT variant. One of China’s biggest military manufacturers, China North Industries Corporation (Norinco), has developed a new variant of its Type 96 (ZTZ-96) main battle tank (MBT) in time to participate in the 30 July to 16 August International Army Games organised by the Russian Ministry of Defence.
At least five T-96Bs arrived in Russia on 7 July to take part in the Masters of Automobile and Tank Hardware competition, according to Russian media reports. The ‘Tank Biathlon’ portion of this competition received wide coverage in Chinese state media last year when Norinco’s 50-tonne T-96A MBT was allowed to participate.
The new T-96B variant was revealed on Chinese online forums on 5 July by a blogger posting a video of the tank on its way to high altitude testing. Two days later images emerged of the new tank beginning its trip to Russia.
Except for an improved ventilation system, the T-96B appears to show no visible changes to the turret, optical sensors or main 125 mm gun armament.
Unconfirmed Chinese reports indicate that computer and digital communication systems have been improved, allowing tank commanders to benefit from common integrated intelligence of the battlefield processed at higher levels of command.
The reports also point to improvements reportedly made to the T-96B’s engine, exhaust system, suspension, and running wheels.
The engine and new rear-mounted exhaust system appear to have benefited from those developed for Norinco’s VT-4 export MBT. If this is the case, the T-96B may have a 1,200 hp liquid-cooled diesel engine.
Other Chinese reports indicate, however, that the T-96B may have only a slightly more powerful version of the T-96A’s engine, with an output closer to 1,000 hp.
The T-96B appears to have lighter-weight running wheels and a modified suspension that could increase the reliability of its tank tracks. (Source: IHS Jane’s)
