Mack Defense has been awarded two contracts by the Department of Public Works and Government Services Canada on behalf of the Department of National Defense to deliver more than 1,500 8×8 trucks for the Medium Support Vehicle System (MSVS) Standard Military Pattern (SMP) program and to provide an initial five years of In-Service Support (ISS) for the SMP fleet operating in Canada and throughout the world. Mack Defense (www.mackdefense.com) will also provide 300 trailers and 150
Armour Protection Systems as part of the two contracts valued at c$725m. Deliveries will begin in the summer of 2017 with completion in the fall of 2018.
“We are extremely proud that the Canadian government has chosen Mack
Defense to provide the Canadian Armed Forces with our MSVS SMP solution,” said Ryan Werling, president of Mack Defense. “Mack has supplied the Canadian Armed Forces with trucks since World War II and we are honored to continue to support Canada’s domestic and international missions for years to come.”
The vehicle systems will include multiple variants such as cargo, material handling cranes, load handling systems (LHS), and mobile repair trucks (MRT). Mack Defense will work with key strategic Canadian partners including Volvo Group sister company Prevost; Dumur Industries Ltd; EODC, Inc.; and Link Suspensions of Canada (Raydan Division). The Volvo Group’s global supply chain, with a strong presence across Canada and in 42 other countries worldwide, serves as the foundation of the In-Service Support program.
15 Jul 15. Ukraine receives first modernised T-80 MBTs. The Ukrainian military has received a first batch of eight modernised T-80 main battle tanks (MBTs) from the Kharkiv Morozov Machine Building Design Bureau (KMDB). According to Ukroboronprom, the T-80s would soon enter the “zone of the antiterrorist operation” (ATO), a term Kiev uses to refer to the conflict in east Ukraine. The Ukrainian Ministry of Defence (MoD), meanwhile, noted that the T-80s would be delivered to a mobile armoured unit of the country’s airborne forces. The MoD said the modernisation of the first eight T-80s was completed by KMDB a month ahead of schedule, with the vehicles handed over on 13 July. The modernisation work is stated to have included changes to the vehicle’s turrets, hulls, and the installation of Kontakt explosive reactive armour (ERA). At the same time as the handover of the first eight modernised T-80s, the MoD announced that, following trials, a first production batch of Dozor-B 4×4 protected patrol vehicles is scheduled to be supplied to the Ukrainian military in September. 13 Jul 15. M-ATVs turn up in Aden. At least a dozen Oshkosh All-Terrain Mine-Resistance Ambush Protected Vehicles (M-ATVs) have been delivered to Yemeni and are being used in the fighting for the strategically important port city of Aden. Amateur videos and photographs of the M-ATVs in Aden began to emerge on social media channels on 12 July. One video showed a convoy of 12 M-ATVs fitted with bar armour and operated by ununiformed men. At least some were armed with 14.5 mm KPV heavy machine guns rather than the .50 Browning guns or Mk 19 grenade launchers the type is usually seen carrying. The vehicles are presumably supplied by either Saudi Arabia or the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the two regional countries that opera
