11 Apr 13. An upgraded M113 armoured personnel carrier from the Brazilian Army has been unveiled at the LAAD exhibition in Rio de Janeiro. BAE Systems is upgrading 150 vehicles at the Brazilian Army depot in Curitiba from the M113B variant to the M113A2 Mk1 standard, which involves replacing the engines, transmission and cooling systems as well as overhauling the existing hatches and ramps. A spokesperson from BAE told Shephard that two engineers from the company are working with the army team on a production line and provide training to make the transition so that the local engineers can complete all the future work themselves and take responsibility for the APCs. BAE Systems secured the $41.9m contract through a US foreign military sales agreement to upgrade the vehicles in December 2011 and the company is scheduled to complete the project by November 2014. BAE is providing all the materials and the spares and tools to complete the task. The M113A2 Mk1 has a 265hp Detroit 6V53T turbocharged diesel engine with the upgraded Allison TX100-1A cross-drive transmission that can get the vehicle to a maximum speed of 38mph when required. The new systems will increase the commonality of systems within the vehicle fleet to allow for more efficient maintenance and support, and provide more along with better power.
