20 Nov 25. Bittium Continues Development of Unmanned Systems as Part of iMUGS2 Project. A European consortium uniting leading defence, research, and technology organisations from across the Union has launched the iMUGS2 project to develop the next generation of interoperable unmanned ground systems. Bittium is one of the organizations contributing to the project that operates under the European Commission’s European Defence Fund (EDF) programme and is coordinated by Milrem Robotics. Bittium was part of the project consortium also in the first iMUGS project. Building on the achievements of the first iMUGS project, iMUGS2 aims to enhance Europe’s autonomy and robotics capabilities by developing a scalable, interoperable, and secure system-of-systems architecture for both unmanned and manned platforms. The project reinforces Europe’s technological sovereignty in key defence areas, including AI-driven autonomy, systems integration, communications, and command and control. In the project, Bittium is responsible for the communications of the entire system using both tactical and commercial technologies and networks. Bittium’s solution supports seamlessly cooperation of different military branches and domains, unmanned systems and troops, as well as command-and-control, and creation and sharing of situation awareness in the demanding conditions of the battlefield.

iMUGS2 begins immediately with extensive conceptual, operational, and technical development across multiple domains. Partners will design and refine operational concepts, system architectures, and technological solutions that advance manned–unmanned teaming, autonomous functions, secure communications, and electronic protection. In parallel, the project focuses on system integration, lifecycle efficiency, and interoperability, laying the groundwork for upcoming demonstrations and capability deployment across Europe’s defence landscape. These developments will ensure resilient, cost-effective, and future-ready unmanned systems. The duration of the iMUGS2 project is 36 months and the total value is EUR 55m. Bittium’s share of the total value is approximately EUR 2.35m.

 

20 Nov 25. KNDS unveils the Leopard 2A8, first new battle tank build since 1992. Germany’s KNDS this week unveiled the Leopard 2A8, the latest version of the venerable main battle tank that has become a staple of armored formations for more than a dozen countries in Europe and beyond. The tank will be a new build, the first for the Leopard series since 1992, according to German defense officials, after several previous versions that were modernizations of existing tanks. The German army is slated to get 123 of the behemoths weighing nearly 70 metrics ton, with deliveries beginning in 2027 and to be finalized in 2030. New features include a locally-produced version of the Trophy active protection system by Israel’s Rafael designed to fend off incoming projectiles. German officials tested Trophy on a previous iteration of the Leopard tank and decided to make it standard equipment for the new series. According to a Ministry of Defense statement, additional improvements in the A8 variant include better armor and an overall rework of situational-awareness and fire-control features for the crew. As in previous Leopard iterations, Rheinmetall’s 120mm smooth-bore main cannon will remain part of the weapons package. The first batch of new Leopards is slated for a Bundeswehr armored formation in Lithuania, Germany’s first permanent deployment of troops outside its borders since World War II. The unit there is part of Berlin’s contributions to securing countries on NATO’s eastern flank that are deemed vulnerable to Russian aggression. The brigade-strong unit of 5,000 personnel is slated to achieve full operational status in 2027, coinciding with the first year of Leopard 2A8 deliveries. Besides Germany, order books for the new Leopard are filling up, with Lithuania, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Norway all planning to add the type to their armies. 20 Nov 25. Ajax – send again over! It’s the headset not the vehicle! The current slew of articles criticizing the noise related issues on the new Ajax vehicle, post IOC, which has reached fever pitch, has missed a key point. Ajax is the first armoured vehicle to be introduced into the British Army which has to comply with the The Noise At Work Act Regulations, which are based around an office not an armoured vehicle environment. The other issue is the removal of Crown Immunity which in previous years protected the MoD from law suits for any hearing damage. When GDLS started trials of the vehicle its operators used commercially available hearing protection headsets, so they suffered no hearing issues. The British Army in service headsets lacked the kite mark which gave them the advanced hearing protection levels. When the noise issues became apparent, the solution was to introduce hearing buds, such as those used on firing ranges with the headsets whilst a new suite of headsets with the required advanced hearing protection were being purchased. The other safety solution introduced was to limit the use of the vehicle during peace time missions to a six hour time limit. Both of these solutions are common place for all armoured vehicles, so why all this fanfare around Ajax? All soldiers in the British Army are also required to have regular hearing tests so that any deafness can be measured from the last test. In addition there were limited sets of headsets so they had to be shared amongst the troops so it is likely that either they were the wrong size which allowed more noise ingress or that the soldiers had not replaced the ‘buds’ which have to be replaced on a regular basis to ensure hearing protection. To brew up such a storm in teacup and accuse ministers and senior soldiers of fudging the IOC of the British Army’s latest and most advanced fighting vehicle, is damaging to GD’s engineering capability and ability to produce advanced armoured vehicles to protect the country and the integrity of ministers and senior officers when the issues at stake is the time honoured problem of all companies and government departments in trying to keep up with the old ‘Health and safety‘ chestnut which is ever evolving. Over the past two weeks, Texelis has supported the launch of two new tactical vehicles built using the Celeris solution: the P2 Tiger from PT SSE, unveiled for the first time for export at the Defence & Security exhibition in Bangkok from 10 to 13 November; and the M1 from INKAS, officially launched at the Milipol exhibition in Paris and presented from 18 to 21 November. This double launch marks the coming of age of Celeris as a strategic offering for the co-construction of armoured vehicles locally. Thanks to Celeris, companies wishing to expand or move up the protected tactical mobility market have been able to design, develop, produce and qualify modern, 100% NATO-compliant vehicles in less than eighteen months. With this dual presentation, Texelis has demonstrated the relevance of its offering, which has enabled the creation of two new vehicles in two different countries and on two different continents, all on a single mobility platform: Celeris, and with unique support: that of Texelis.

P2 Tiger and M1 

The INKAS M1 and PT SSE P2 Tiger are armoured personnel carriers (APC), weighing 13.5 tonnes for the M1 and 14 tonnes for the P2 Tiger, with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 18 tonnes. Built on different principles in terms of architecture, mission, protection and systems integration, they are both based on Texelis’ mobility offering, Celeris. The P2 Tiger is presented in an APC configuration, capable of carrying a full combat group of 2+8 in all-terrain conditions. In its configuration at the Bangkok Defence & Security exhibition, it is equipped with a 30mm automatic cannon, representing significant offensive capability against armoured and unarmoured targets, but also defence against aerial threats, starting with drones. Modular in design, it is conceived as a family of vehicles with numerous configurations: ambulance, command post, anti-aircraft, anti-drone, etc. Designed primarily for the needs of the Indonesian army, it is now a valuable asset for export. Officially launched at D&S Thailand, it is a symbol of the dynamism of Indonesian private industry and the partnership between France and Indonesia. The M1 was developed to carry an intervention group or a specialised team with significant equipment transport requirements and therefore interior space requirements. It carries 2+6 personnel with a high level of ballistic and mine protection (STANAG 4569 Level 4a/4b). In more infantry-oriented configurations, it can carry up to 2+8 passengers. Both are the result of collaboration with Texelis and are part of the Celeris offering. Both were developed extremely quickly, with less than 18 months between the launch of the programme and the presentation of a tested and qualified vehicle.

Celeris: a unique offering in today’s military land mobility market.

As part of Celeris, Texelis is responsible for the entire development, production and certification of the vehicle’s mobility function, including the engine and cooling system, ground connection and suspension, power transmission, electrical and electronic architecture, including the computers, software and settings that ensure the whole system runs smoothly. This mobility is specifically military, developed and tested over several years. It is derived from the VBMR-Léger Serval programme, for which Texelis is responsible for all mobility aspects on behalf of the French Directorate General of Armament. This military nature is unique in a market where most armoured vehicles are built on a simple civilian-military rolling base, i.e. adapted for military use by reinforcing or replacing certain parts. This method, which has the advantage of mass production and the associated economies of scale, does, however, create problems in terms of performance – which is not designed for armoured vehicles – and warranty – which does not cover these applications –  maintaining operational condition – as the civilian industry does not monitor obsolescence over time – or even the purchase of components – which can turn a seemingly simple and risk-free undertaking into a logistical nightmare – not to mention the difficulty of putting together a team of specialists to run the programme and certify the vehicle.

In response to this, Celeris offers a one-stop shop system where Texelis meets all needs, from the pre-design phase of the vehicle to production, industrialisation and assembly support, industrial testing and mobility certification, not to mention maintaining operational condition over several decades. This approach is coupled with a club spirit, with each complementary development carried out for a Celeris customer being made available to other users: tropicalisation, right-hand or left-hand drive, enhanced air conditioning, system qualification or integration, etc. This system also promotes solutions from other industrial partners to further increase the speed of development of new vehicles, their production and commissioning, and to improve the range of on-board systems. It is with this in mind that the P2 Tiger presented by PT SSE in Thailand was equipped with an ARX30 from KNDS France, a Pilar V acoustic detector from Metravib, GALIX smoke grenade launchers from the Lacroix Group for self-protection, an Exail inertial unit and Elno intercoms.

Texelis’ partner can thus focus on its core competencies: developing, assembling and producing armoured vehicles, without having to bear the burden of mobility, which constitutes the bulk of the issues involved in developing and maintaining an armoured vehicle over time. This model is particularly suited to countries with a strong interest in the local production and maintenance of land equipment, with a demand for autonomy and tight capacity schedules. Celeris responds to a unanimous demand from the defence sector: shorter production times and faster development. Yesterday’s world, with delivery times measured in years, has been overtaken by today’s realities. Celeris is a capability multiplier where a decision today translates into a new 100% NATO-compliant vehicle within a year, anywhere in the world and without any skills or investment requirements. With Celeris, Texelis aims to demonstrate that high-quality mobility, specifically for military applications, can and should become standard. Beyond the 4×4, Texelis has already developed a Celeris 6×6 platform. Designed as an option for the 4×4, it offers the same logic and qualities as the 4×4 platform while adding an extra axle to increase the gross vehicle weight and therefore the maximum payload. At the same time, Texelis is currently developing an 8×8 driveline for a leading export customer. 20 Nov 25. Strengthening EU’s Military Mobility. Armed forces need to be able to swiftly move troops and equipment in the EU and across its external borders. Military mobility underpins the Union’s preparedness and readiness, and is essential for European security and deterrence. Today the European Commission together with the High Representative, and with considerable input from the European Defence Agency and its Member States, proposed new rules to establish an EU-wide military mobility area by 2027. Inputs from the Member States gathered by the European Defence Agency included the experience from the Technical Arrangements for cross-border movement permissions, the military requirements for the digitalisation of customs procedures for military transports, and the capability gaps identified through EDA studies in the domains of rail and inland waterways transport.  EDA supports its 27 Member States in improving their defence capabilities through European cooperation. Acting as an enabler and facilitator for Ministries of Defence willing to engage in collaborative capability projects, the Agency has become the hub for European defence cooperation, with expertise and networks covering the full spectrum of defence capabilities. 19 Nov 25. Challenger 3 delay. Sources close to BATTLESPACE suggest that RBSL has capacity issues in the fulfilment of the Challenger 2 LEP Programme and the Challenger 3 project. This has led to an 18 month delay for the Challenger 3 Project.

20 Nov 25. G3 Systems selected as the preferred supplier to upgrade NavyPODS capability. G3 Systems Limited, the British company with over 24 years of operationally proven expertise in designing and producing deployable infrastructure and containerised solutions, has recently completed an essential upgrade to an existing NavyPODS unit.   The work has been completed for QinetiQ on behalf of the Royal Navy’s Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO) and aligns with previous work that G3 Systems completed for the Royal Navy early in the development of the NavyPODS concept.  The Royal Navy’s vision for NavyPODS represented a paradigm shift in maritime capability. Rather than traditional ship designs with fixed systems, the focus switched to simplicity, adaptability and modularity.  The concept, driven forward by OCTO, revolves around the idea of utilising standardised containers as Persistent Operational Deployment System (PODS) housing a spectrum of capabilities, ranging from precision strike and unmanned air systems to directed energy and medical aid.  G3 Systems has vast experience and proven expertise in designing, building and supporting such high-specification, bespoke, deployable containerised solutions.  In addition, G3 Systems also has extensive experience in designing and delivering NavyPODS, having produced the very successful Heavy Lift Drone NavyPODS capability in 2022.  This project was required to upgrade an existing NavyPODS system, for which G3 Systems were not the OEM, to deliver the intended capability.  The work included fitting an internal lift structure, upgrading the roof opening system and repairing and upgrading the structure to meet operational requirements.  At the same time, G3 Systems upgraded the ancillary systems to ensure compliance with current regulations.

19 Nov 25. Bell Textron Prague, a.s., a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with TEREM Holding Bulgaria regarding cooperation and mutual support for a fleet of six Bell 206 aircraft owned by the Bulgarian Air Force. This MOU will enable the potential development of a solution for the Bulgarian Air Force to receive local customer service provided by TEREM, with aircraft parts and personnel support provided by Bell Textron Prague. The intended Bell support includes PART 145 maintenance services, PART 21 Engineering and Design, and, in close cooperation with TEREM Holding, heavy and complex maintenance, retrofits, modifications and upgrades, and customization of the Bulgarian Air Force’s fleet of Bell 206 helicopters. The possible solution is designed to provide the Bulgarian Air Force the critical sustainment and future retrofit, modification and upgrade possibilities as well as maintenance support.

19 Nov 25. India picks BAE Hägglunds’ BvS-10 for Army’s new tracked vehicle. The buy represents the vehicle’s “first expanse” into Asia, a BAE official told Breaking Defense. The Indian Army has selected BAE Systems Hägglunds’ BvS-10 for its next all-terrain tracked vehicle, in what a BAE official told Breaking Defense was the “first expanse of BvS-10 into Asia.” The production contract, worth an undisclosed sum, was awarded to Indian conglomerate and prime in the program, Larsen & Toubro, for a total of 18 BvS-10 “Sindhu” ATVs, the L&T announced today.

“The BvS10 Sindhu is an upgraded variant of the proven BvS10 articulated all-terrain vehicle with adaptations tailored specifically for India’s terrain and climate, including high altitude, desert, marshland and amphibious environments,” the announcement said.

BAE Systems Hägglunds Regional Director Darren Restarick told Breaking Defense L&T will be responsible for the end-to-end build of BvS-10s at their Armoured Systems Complex facility in Hazira, the same location tasked with manufacturing Hanwha’s K9 self-propelled howitzer. Contracted under the ‘Make in India’ initiative by the Indian government, the deal will also ensure a “broader security of supply” of BvS-10 parts globally, Restarick added.

“This deal represents technology transfer, know-how and technical support,” Restarick said, confirming the BvS-10 had successfully passed vehicle trials at altitudes as high as 18,000 feet above mean sea level. The contract also includes a comprehensive integrated logistic support package for initial deployment, maintenance, and life cycle sustainment.

According to a request for proposals (RFP) issued by the Indian Ministry of Defence in 2022, the armed forces had been seeking an ATV capable of working “seamlessly” in high altitude areas as well as “low-lying salt flats and swamp areas.”

All 18 platforms will be troop-carrying variants and are scheduled to be delivered to the Indian Armed Forces within two years, BAE Systems Hägglunds confirmed to Breaking Defense.

The BvS-10 is already in service with the armed forces of Austria, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom. It’s also on order for the German Army and has been selected for the US Army’s Cold Weather All-Terrain Vehicle (CATV) program.

Hägglunds competed against India company Prominent Comtech’s Talwar ATV in the competition, another a twin-cabin and amphibious ATV.

It remains unclear whether the Indian MoD will modify BvS-10 for additional roles, which can include “command and control, ambulance service, vehicle repair and recovery, logistics support, situational awareness, as well as vehicle mounted lethality and support weapons” vehicles, according to the official announcement.

19 Nov 25. Brazil: APCs, LMVs, and the search for new IFVs and MBTs.

Each vehicle family is based on a common platform.

Brazil will induct around 1,800 6×6 armoured personnel carriers (APC) by the end of 2025

* The country signed a deal last year for 420 light multirole vehicles (LMV)

* In search of a new infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) and main battle tank (MBT), Brazil’s Army will continue operating legacy M113s as an intermediary

Brazil is moving forward with several armoured vehicle programmes according to personnel presenting their progress on acquiring three vehicle types during the Future Armoured Vehicles Survivability conference in London on 18 November 2025.

Each vehicle family is based on a common platform. Each of these baseline vehicles are designed to be fitted with different mission modules, said Captain Rebeca Camurco Coehlho, technical manager for one of the platforms, the 6×6 APC, which comes under the auspices of the Brazilian Army’s manufacturing directorate.

It is worth noting that the presentation took place in the UK, which prompted serious consideration over lessons for the British Army’s own efforts to simplify and replace its convoluted force structure comprising many different legacy vehicle types through the Land Mobility Programme.

Guarani 6×6 APC

Guarani are a family of six-wheeled APCs jointly developed by Iveco Defence Vehicles (IDV), based in Sete Lagoas, and the Brazilian Army, which can carry up to 11 fully equipped troops. Notably, the platform can be transported by a KC-390 Millennium tactical airlifter.

There is an option for one of three weapon station configurations: the UT30BR 30mm cannon, REMAX 7.62mm/12.7mm, and the ringmount PLATT/REMAN of the same calibre.

Coehlho also drew attention to a new 81mm mortar transport version of the Guarani APC, which was designed by the Army arsenal in Rio de Janeiro. The concept was tested in the Army’s test and evaluation centre, and the service anticipate the production of 60 units by the end of this year.

Guaicurus 4×4 LMV

Brazil initially procured 48 four-wheeled LMVs in 2019, all of which are now in service, this was followed up with a $240m contract in July 2024 for an additional 420 units and delivery of this tranche is expected to begin in 2026.

Much like the 6×6, the 4×4 LMV will feature both manual and remote controlled weapon systems tailored to meet the demands of modern warfare scenarios.

With a decade-long horizon, this contract enhances operational readiness and stimulates economic growth through localised production and technology transfer.

M113 intermediary

Meanwhile, the Brazilian Army are also exploring the market to fill gaps in the heavier firepower segment of its force structure. A “prospection” is ongoing for a new IFV and MBT, Coehlho said, insisting that the two armoured fighting vehicles will be based on a common platform.

In the meantime, the Army will continue to operate American-made legacy M113 A2 Mk 1 combat vehicles, of which GlobalData intelligence indicates there are 386 in active service, but these were acquired between 1962-76.

Nevertheless, the Army will integrate the indigenously developed remote controlled weapon system, REMAX 4, jointly developed by the Army and a local company called ARES. (Source: army-technology.com)

 

17 Nov 25. BLACKJAX demonstrator will test rubber composite tracks next month. The AJAX technology demonstrator, unveiled at DSEI in September, will test the rubber composite tracks in two weeks time. The new BLACKJAX testbed will trial its composite rubber tracks (CRTs) in two weeks’ time, confirmed the AJAX systems requirements manager, Lieutenant Colonel Charlie AJ Valdes-Scott, during the Future Armoured Vehicle Survivability conference in London on 17 November 2025. CRTs are an upgraded feature of armoured fighting vehicles (AFV) that offer an alternative to traditional, segmented steel tracks. Instead, rubber is used as a continuous band with integrated treads; this is reinforced with a combination of steel cords and a mixture other high strength materials such as carbon nanotubes. Depending on the success of the trial, which will take place at the beginning of December, CRTs may become a potential upgrade path for the British Army’s AJAX AFV of which there are six variants. The AJAX manufacturer, General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS), will deliver 589 vehicles in all, bringing the fleet to initial operating capability before the end of this year. For now though, it should be understood that CRTs are being integrated on BLACKJAX, a technology demonstrator, which was unveiled at the DSEI 2025 exhibition in September.

An industrial curveball

It is also worth noting that Soucy Defense, based in Quebec, builds and supplies the CRTs from Canada. There is no local manufacturing done in the UK. If the trial is successful, and the British Army decide to integrate the capability, then the subcontractor would eventually be forced to provide the UK government with an economic incentive in line with their new offset policy – in the form of jobs or novel technologies – set up in the Defence Industrial Strategy, published in early September. Interestingly, CRTs have been around for a while. A number of platforms already use them going back several years, including the Dutch CV90s in 2020, a contract with BAE Systems that emulated Norway’s own CV90 fleet, which used CRTs in Afghanistan. New generation vehicles are using CRTs too such as Patria’s armoured personnel carrier, the TRACKX, which was unveiled at DSEI 2025 in London on the same day as the BLACKJAX. General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) and BAE Systems announced today that they have signed a teaming agreement to offer the BvS10 Beowulf platform for the Canadian Army’s Domestic Arctic Mobility Enhancement (DAME) project.  This teaming agreement combines BAE Systems Hägglunds’ deep expertise in all-terrain vehicle design with GDLS’ extensive in-service support capabilities across Canada. Beowulf is a dual-body all-terrain vehicle that provides outstanding mobility in extreme Arctic environments, and unparalleled manoeuvrability across mud, sand, muskeg, snow, ice, and deep water due to its amphibious capabilities. The vehicle boasts a battle-tested drivetrain derived from the BvS10 family, which is currently in operation in eight nations, six of which are NATO member countries. It is a low-risk, proven platform with demonstrated performance that can deliver the military capabilities needed for the defence of Canada’s sovereignty in the Arctic.

17 Nov 25. OPEX REPMUS/ NATO DYMS exercise in Portugal: Rheinmetall deploys Mission Master as part of the exercise. The Düsseldorf-based technology group Rheinmetall participated in OPEX REPMUS 2025 (Operational Exercise Robotic Experimentation and Prototyping with Maritime Unmanned Systems) and DYMS (Dynamic Messenger), NATO’s premier exercise dedicated to advancing maritime autonomy.  Held in Troia and Sesimbra, Portugal, this strategic event brought together allied armed forces, academic institutions, and leading industry players to drive innovation and enhance interoperability across the maritime domain.  The exercise was organized by the Portuguese Navy, NATO, and the European Defense Agency and is considered an international platform for testing a wide variety of unmanned maritime, undersea, airborne, and ground-based systems. REPMUS/ DYMS 2025: A 360° Defense Vision

At REPMUS/ DYMS 2025, Rheinmetall showcased its 360-degree layered defense concept for expeditionary multi-domain harbor protection, coastal defense and land-based maritime UxV operations developed in close collaboration with NATO and partners.

Through live testing in realistic manned-unmanned scenarios, Rheinmetall supported to refine tactical procedures for Man- unmanned teaming and advance operational integration of UxV for Harbour Protection; key systems included the A-UGV Mission Master SP2, PATH Autonomous Kit, Q-UGV LASSy and of other partners i.e. EvoLogics, North.io and Euroatlas. These platforms were seamlessly connected through Battlesuite, an app-store like shared information space that eliminates data silos and enables rapid integrateable, mission-ready capabilities.  The demonstration highlighted scalable, software-defined solutions for critical infrastructure protection, proving how joint innovation accelerates readiness from concept to deployment.

Mission Master – versatile, robust, ready for action

The Mission Master was used in a combination of autonomous navigation, modular payload integration, and high adaptability – for reconnaissance, surveillance, and logistical support, for example. In combination with maritime sensor systems, the unmanned ground system demonstrated its ability to operate reliably and perform well despite harsh coastal conditions.

17 Nov 25. Germany and the Netherlands Procure 222 BOXER RCT 30 Wheeled IFVs. KNDS Deutschland (KNDS) has been subcontracted by ARTEC (OEM of the BOXER system and a joint venture between KNDS Deutschland and Rheinmetall Landsysteme) to supply BOXER RCT 30 wheeled infantry fighting vehicles to the German Army. ARTEC had previously signed a relevant contract with the procurement organization OCCAR (Organisation Conjointe de Coopération en Matière d’Armement). The basis for the procurement was established by the BAAINBw (Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support) and OCCAR. The Bundeswehr is fielding a total of 150 systems under the name “Schakal“. The Dutch armed forces will receive a further 72 BOXER RCT 30. The first RCT 30 wheeled infantry fighting vehicles will be delivered starting in late 2027. The BOXER RCT 30, developed by KNDS, will be the backbone of the newly established “Medium Forces“. The combination of the proven BOXER, already deployed in seven nations, and the proven 30-millimeter turret of the PUMA infantry fighting vehicle enables the “Schakal” to engage moving targets, even while moving. The new wheeled infantry fighting vehicle is also capable of anti-drone and anti-aircraft defense. With the integrated MELLS anti-tank system (multi-role lightweight guided missile system), the BOXER RCT 30 is also capable of successfully engaging main battle tanks. With a six-personnel capacity, the Schakal is the primary weapon system of the Grenadiers of the „Medium Forces“. The BOXER RCT 30, developed by KNDS, will be the backbone of the newly established "Medium Forces“. 17 Nov 25. KC-390 Millennium and Gripen E Successfully Complete Refueling Certification Flights.

* Partnership between Saab and Embraer strengthens technological and operational integration between two strategic assets of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB)

* Air-to-air refueling allows both aircraft to expand their capabilities in the international market

Embraer (NYSE: EMBJ/ B3: EMBJ3), a global leader in the aerospace industry, and Saab, in cooperation with the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), have successfully completed the certification flight test campaign for in-flight refuelling of the Gripen E fighter by the KC-390 Millennium multi-mission aircraft.

Conducted at Embraer’s facilities in Gavião Peixoto, São Paulo, where the Gripen Flight Test Centre is located, the campaign was coordinated by the Department of Aerospace Science and Technology (DCTA) from the FAB, and brought together engineers and test pilots from Saab, Embraer and the FAB. During the tests, a range of flight configurations, speeds and altitudes were evaluated and confirmed precision during in-flight refuelling. Both aircraft’s latest-generation fly-by-wire systems contributed to the successful operation, with the KC-390 providing a favourable wake and the Gripen demonstrating responsiveness in flight. The flight test campaign consisted of two objectives. The first involved qualifying the Gripen E as a receiver for in-flight refuelling — a key step in validating the fighter’s performance, stability, and structural integrity throughout the operation. The second focused on verifying the compatibility of both aircraft across the KC-390’s entire flight envelope, for high-speed refuelling under both day and night conditions. The in-flight refuelling of Gripen E by the KC-390 further enhances interoperability between these two highly advanced, latest-generation aircraft.

“This important milestone confirms the KC-390 unmatched qualities as a tanker and further strengthens our partnership with Saab and the Brazilian Air Force. Additionally, the unique multi-mission capability offered by the KC-390, which allows the airplane to be converted into a tanker in a matter of hours, offers unbeatable flexibility to Air Forces worldwide,” said Walter Pinto Júnior, Chief Operations Officer of Embraer Defense & Security.

“This achievement reflects the high level of integration between the teams involved. The verification of in-flight refuelling is a very significant technical milestone for our business, as it demonstrates that Gripen E has reached a new level of operational reach. The success of this campaign further reinforces the strategic partnership between Brazil and Sweden and Brazil’s role within the global Gripen programme ecosystem,” said Mikael Olsson, Head of Flight Testing at Saab.

“The verification of in-flight refuelling between the KC-390 and F-39 Gripen represents the success of a cooperation that goes beyond borders. It is the result of a joint effort combining Swedish technology, Brazilian engineering and the operational excellence of the Brazilian Air Force,” concluded Colonel Aviator George Luiz Guedes de Oliveira.

The Swedish Military Aviation Authority (SE-MAA) will now be able to review the verification evidence for the air-to-air refueling capability of Gripen E as part of its certification process. This will be followed by the certification process conducted by the Industrial Promotion and Coordination Institute (IFI) of the FAB. These institutions are responsible for the technical analysis and validation of results, ensuring that both aircraft comply with the most demanding international standards.
