06 Dec 24. BAE Systems has signed individual contracts worth a total of approximately $2.5bn with both Sweden and Denmark for new CV90 combat vehicles. These contracts come under a new three-party framework agreement with the Danish Ministry of Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO) and the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV) to expand the acquisition of new CV9035MkIIIC combat vehicles for both countries. This builds on an initial contract signed between BAE Systems and Sweden’s FMV in May 2024. Under these contracts, Denmark is procuring 115 new CV9035MkIIICs, while Sweden has agreed to acquire a total of 50 new vehicles. The agreement also includes further vehicles for Ukraine financed by the two governments. Together, this takes the total value of CV9035MkIIICs contracted under the framework agreement to approximately $2.5bn, including spares, support, logistics, and training.
“The infantry fighting vehicle is an essential component of the heavy brigade we are currently building. The 115 new vehicles will significantly enhance Denmark’s contribution to collective security and international operations. With the 44 existing vehicles, we will have a total of 159 vehicles, providing us with substantial strength – also from an international perspective,” said Major General Peter Boysen, Chief of the Royal Danish Army.
“These new CV9035MkIIICs will extend the capabilities of the armed forces of Sweden and Denmark. They will also provide their crews with improved situational awareness and increased mobility, protection, and lethality,” said Tommy Gustafsson-Rask, managing director of BAE Systems Hägglunds, which designs and produces the CV90.
The new version of the CV9035MkIIIC is built to the same standard as the latest CV90 mid-life upgrade program for the Netherlands. The vehicles will be equipped with the new CV90 turret, which provides a leap forward in design and functionality. The vehicle is built on years of combat-proven experience, continuous improvements, and data gathering from the CV90 User Club, which comprises the 10 nations operating CV90 fleets. The commonality of the CV90 platform offers the users interoperability within as well as between nations.
BAE Systems’ CV90 infantry fighting vehicles provide world-leading combat capability in the 20-38-ton class. It can integrate a wide range of weapon systems, providing all-target capability to land forces around the world. With a total of 1,900 vehicles ordered in 17 different variants, the CV90 has covered more than eight million kilometers. It has been selected by 10 European nations, eight of them NATO-members, and has seen combat in Afghanistan and Ukraine, as well as operations in Liberia.
06 Dec 24. ST Engineering marks a new milestone in its International Defence business with a strategic agreement with Kazakhstan Paramount Engineering (KPE). ST Engineering will collaborate with KPE to set up in-country production capability for a new 8×8 amphibious multi-purpose armoured vehicle. This includes engineering and technical support for the design and production of the vehicle, based on ST Engineering’s field-tested Terrex Infantry Fighting Vehicle, capable of operating effectively in open water conditions. The partnership represents another success for the Group’s international defence business strategy as it continues to pursue growth through localisation, in-country operations support, as well as licensing with industry partners. This approach will also address the needs of customers looking to strengthen indigenous military capabilities and build resilient supply chains.
“This marks a breakthrough for our Land Systems business in terms of securing its first significant international land platform contract in recent years, as well as entry into a new market in Central Asia.” said Lim Kok Ann, President of Land Systems business at ST Engineering. “We look forward to a successful collaboration with KPE and we are confident that the new platform will meet the operational needs of its users.”
Aibek Baryssov, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Kazakhstan Paramount Engineering said, “KPE’s production capabilities stand at 500 units of various types of armoured vehicles per year per shift and our extensive experience in deep localisation, scientific research, and the operation of armoured vehicles in Kazakhstan’s unique geographic conditions, together with ST Engineering, will enable us to fully meet the needs of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan for amphibious 8×8 vehicles.” He added, “Looking ahead, we have plans for new stages of collaboration on various projects.”
The new vehicle will be manufactured at KPE’s production facility in Kazakhstan starting from 2025. With decades of expertise in military technology and engineering, ST Engineering’s armoured vehicles are proven in battlefield mobility, personnel protection, and firepower. In recent years, the Group has invested and developed integrated solutions to enhance connectivity, computing and sensors for a range of defence platforms, including fully digitalised vehicles, unmanned ground vehicles as well as hybrid electric drive solutions.
05 Dec 24. KNDS Deutschland orders Trophy APS for German Army’s future Leopard 2A8 fleet. KNDS Deutschland has ordered 123 Trophy active protection systems (APSs) for the German Army’s future Leopard 2A8 main battle tank (MBT) fleet, EuroTrophy announced in a press release on 4 December. The order includes initial spare parts packages and services to integrate Trophy in the technical, operational, and logistic chain of the German Army, EuroTrophy said. The Bundeswehr will receive its first of 123 Leopard 2A8s, for which Trophy is standard equipment, in 2025. The Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (Bundesamt für Ausrüstung, Informationstechnik und Nutzung der Bundeswehr: BAAINBw), signed a contract with KNDS Deutschland on 25 May 2023 for 18 Leopard 2A8s, with an option for 105 more, including spare parts and maintenance for five years, with deliveries of the MBT planned from 2025 until the end of 2026. The first Leopard 2 MBT equipped with Trophy was rolled out on 29 October for the German Army. It was the Leopard 2A7A1 version and will be delivered to the German Army in mid-2025, followed by 16 more by the end of that year. It is undergoing testing by industry and Germany’s Wehrtechnische Dienststelle 41 military technology centre. Development of the Leopard 2A7A1 has provided important insights for the design of the Leopard 2A8, according to the Bundeswehr, which expects the integration of Trophy into a Leopard 2 to allow industry to make the Leopard 2A8 variant available to the Bundeswehr much more quickly. EuroTrophy said KNDS Deutschland’s Trophy order was the second in the last 12 months after the Norwegian Army selected the APS for its Leopard 2A8s. Norway is procuring 54 of the tanks. The UK Ministry of Defence has outlined its ongoing efforts to modernise the British Army, emphasising investment in advanced platforms like the Ares armoured personnel carrier and the Boxer mechanised vehicle. In response to recent parliamentary questions, Defence Ministers Maria Eagle and Luke Pollard MP detailed steps being taken to enhance the Army’s lethality, protection, and mobility. The Ares platform, a variant of the Ajax Armoured Cavalry Programme, remains on track to achieve Initial Operating Capability by December 2025. Maria Eagle esaid that the Army’s modernisation is guided by a programme of investment worth bns of pounds over the next decade. The upcoming Strategic Defence Review in early 2025 will further refine future capability priorities. While Ares will provide a critical capability for armoured cavalry, the focus for infantry battalions remains on the Boxer platform. Eagle directed those seeking further clarification to a related answer provided by Luke Pollard, which detailed the structure of future heavy mechanised infantry units.
