17 Jun 24. Rolls-Royce Presents New mtu Propulsion Concepts for Military Vehicles of the Future.

  • Concept for new 10-cylinder variant of the 199 series with over 1.100 kW output for tanks weighing up to 70 tons

Rolls-Royce’s Power Systems division is expanding its mtu engine programme for military land vehicles to include a hybrid powerpack for special tactical requirements and a 10-cylinder, over 1.100 kW power output, version of the mtu Series 199 which has been extremely successful with NATO forces. Both concepts will celebrate their premiere at the Eurosatory defence trade fair, which takes place in Paris from 17 to 21 June.

Dr Jörg Stratmann, CEO of Rolls-Royce Power Systems said: “This underlines the importance we attach to our partnership with NATO countries and their allies in safeguarding their security interests. Because cooperation with the security authorities is one of Rolls-Royce’s strategic initiatives, we will continue to be a reliable partner as a supplier of propulsion systems for military vehicles with our decades of technological expertise.”

Last year, at its Capital Markets Day, Rolls-Royce highlighted the governmental business within Power Systems as an area of future near-term growth through investment and expanding the scope of its products, including providing more integrated solutions.

Hybrid concept offers new tactical options

Knut Müller, Senior Vice President Global Governmental Business at Rolls-Royce Power Systems said:

“Future armoured military land vehicles will require more power for propulsion and on-board power supply for the electronic systems. At the same time, they will be designed for a different tactical approach in the field. Our future mtu propulsion solutions for this application take both of these requirements into account.”

Electrification and hybridisation will give tactical vehicles new capabilities in the field. To this end, Rolls-Royce’s new mtu hybrid drive combines the advantages of a high-performance diesel engine with those of a battery-electric drive. The highly integrated propulsion system requires comparatively little installation space in the vehicle in order to maximise the volume available for equipment and crew. The core of the solution is a highly mobile and extremely compact drive solution, taking into account increasing cost pressure, tight budgets and the need for significantly larger vehicle fleets.

For quiet operation, for example in a concealed position, the high-performance batteries previously charged in diesel mode, supply the vehicle’s electrical and electronic systems. This is done without the noise and thermal footprint of the diesel engine – and over a longer period of time. This makes the vehicle more difficult to locate for enemy reconnaissance. The so-called “anti-idling” mode not only ensures better camouflage of the vehicle, but also significantly reduces fuel consumption when the vehicle is on standby. The range of the vehicles and the downstream logistics chain for refuelling the vehicles are optimised.

The advantages of “mild” hybridisation are demonstrated by the combined drive on slow journeys, when the vehicle tracks generate little noise. The noise generated by the drive is reduced to a minimum, making it considerably more difficult to detect the vehicle. Rolls-Royce uses a specially developed and customised silencer in combination with the hybrid main propulsion. In combined operation, the electric propulsion also serves as a booster for highly dynamic acceleration, noise-reduced low-speed driving or even high-speed driving. “This allows us to utilise the advantages of hybridisation in all operating modes,” emphasises Müller.

Christian Wolf, Head of Development for Military Engines and Systems at Rolls-Royce Power Systems said: “This propulsion concept will expand the operational possibilities of future tracked armoured vehicles in a way that was previously hardly imaginable. We are convinced that we are making an important contribution to the further development of the defence capabilities of NATO and its allies. For the first time, vehicle manufacturers will be able to realise completely new vehicle concepts, whereby the hybrid concept can in principle be implemented with any engine series from the mtu military propulsion programme.”

10V 199 with over 1.100 kW power

An engine series that has proven itself in the field is getting a new generation. The mtu Series 199 with outputs from 260 to 800 kW is well known in many military land defence programmes and has proven itself in all extreme climatic conditions in more than 15 countries. With the future 10-cylinder variant, the concept of which is being presented at the Eurosatory defence trade fair, the 199 series will cover a power range of up to 1.100 kW and will also be able to power vehicles weighing 50 to 70 tonnes. The logistical uniformity, with identical components within this engine family from the 6-cylinder to the 10-cylinder variants, will help the armed forces to significantly reduce their logistics costs.

Christian Wolf said: “In the next step, we have set our sights on a further increase in output to 1,200 kW.”

Thanks to the modular design principle of the mtu Series 199 and its compact dimensions, the 10-cylinder engine can be used not only for new vehicles but also for the repowering of existing vehicles. The 10-cylinder version will set new standards in terms of power density, compact design and, above all, already available add-on parts such as hydraulic units, air compressors and generators for power generation. This will significantly simplify vehicle integration into a Powerpack.

The 10-cylinder engine has numerous product features in common with the 6- and 8-cylinder models of the mtu Series 199, which have made the Series 199 the best-selling engine series for military vehicles in its class: high power density with a small design volume; fast response behaviour; configurable according to vehicle requirements, for example with a generator or other add-ons; a wide range of options for power take-offs (so-called PTOs); and low lifecycle costs due to long maintenance intervals.

Knut Müller said:

“With this engine, which is based on a commercial basic engine, we are helping to meet the increased requirements for national and alliance defence in a cost-efficient manner.”

The mtu Series 199 has written an unrivalled success story with around 4000 units produced since 2000. The 6- and 8-cylinder variants are used, for example, in the Boxer 8×8 wheeled vehicle, the tracked vehicles based on the ASCOD platform; the Ajax family vehicles; the next generation of US combat vehicles such as the M10 Booker; and the Borsuk infantry fighting vehicle. 17 Jun 24. Battle tank concepts mushroom at Paris arms show.  If Europeans fail to pull off a common next-generation battle tank design, it will not have been for a lack of ideas.

Industry frenemies KNDS and Rheinmetall each presented new concepts here touting major improvements to existing tank fleets, keenly aware that the fluid schedule of the Franco-German Main Ground Combat System could be decades away from fielding a weapon.

KNDS — the joint venture of Germany’s Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and France’s Nexter — unveiled the Leopard 2 A-RC 3.0 at a brief ceremony, where development head Axel Scheibel diplomatically spoke of the “slightly delayed” marquee program between Berlin and Paris. “We have to have a next-gen tank” before that, he told reporters.

Envisioned features include a weight savings of 10% over the 60-plus-ton Leopard 2. Engineers hope to achieve this through cascading modifications that include a new gun design, which enables the relocation of the three-person crew more deeply into the protected chassis, thereby saving on armor weight spent on protecting personnel located further up in the tank.

The linchpin of the idea is a main gun movable on two pivot points, causing the barrel to rest level above the chassis at all time, obviating the need to account for dead space from the cannon’s back swinging around, Scheibel explained.

The company envisions a choice of 120mm-, 130mm- or 140mm-caliber guns, incorporating a trend toward larger projectiles for longer range and heftier kinetic punch.

A new munition delivery system is also part of the concept, borrowing from soda bottle distributors the idea of cubed storage containers that can feed three initial rounds to the barrel within 10 seconds, Scheibel said.

With the gun and turret concept complete, KNDS plans to unveil a fully functioning demonstrator at the Eurosatory show in 2026, spending the time until then fleshing out the chassis design, Scheibel said. The company has already driven and fired the A-RC 3.0 tank in a testable configuration and presented the design to the German armed forces, the Bundeswehr, he added.

The collection of modifications can be applied to existing Leopard 2 tanks, which is where much of the market is expected to lie in the future, Scheibel told reporters. “It’s not tricky,” he said, because the two-pivot cannon design enables something of a clean-slate approach for tweaking the rest of the system.

Meanwhile, KNDS presented a development version of the French Leclerc tank fitted with a 120mm Ascalon gun, with a barrel that can be swapped out to fire 140mm munitions. KNDS France has already tested the system, with the barrel switch taking about 25 minutes, according to Francois Groshany, who runs tracked armor programs at the French arm of the company.

The Leclerc Evolution tank is proposed as a new build. And while existing Leclerc platforms could potentially be refitted, “that’s a question of economics,” Groshany told reporters during a walk around KNDS France’s offering Monday. The French tank is meant to complement the Leopard 2 offering rather than compete with it “to address markets for which the Leopard isn’t relevant.”

The company sees realistic possibilities to find buyers, “otherwise we wouldn’t launch it,” Groshany said, adding that there’s a market for hundreds of main battle tanks in the next 10 to 15 years.

The Ascalon cannon’s capabilities will be able to go “well beyond” those of the current generation of 120mm guns, with the company targeting an energy impact on the target of at least 10 megajoules. The Leclerc upgrade is proposed with a 22-round autoloader in a two-person turret, with a two-person chassis including the deputy commander. Armament would also include a 30mm gun for anti-drone purposes, plus a launcher for loitering munitions.

Rheinmetall, which managed to pull off a big splash at the Eurosatory 2022 iteration with the surprise introduction of its Panther KF51 tank, presented yet another model on Monday. An unmanned turret, the company said, will enable the crew to sit lower in the protected chassis and provide 25 “ready rounds” for the 130mm main gun.

Bjoern Bernhard, the company’s head of vehicle systems in Europe, introduced the development amid what he called the “the obvious postponement” of the Franco-German Main Ground Combat System program. “We’ve seen that MGCS is not getting ahead as planned,” he said.

Charles Beaudouin, a retired major general and former head of the French Army’s equipment office who now runs Eurosatory as CEO of COGES Events, lauded the level of activity here surrounding tank technology.

“I myself am surprised,” he told Defense News. “In my opinion, as a former officer, the groundswell is much more important than we think. It’s not an adaptation, it’s a transformation of European armed forces.” (Source: Defense News)

 

17 Jun 24. BAE Systems’ fourth Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV) prototype is being showcased at Eurosatory this week. Configured with a common top plate, also known as the External Mission Equipment Package (ExMEP), the prototype showcases the vehicle’s ability to integrate capabilities and equipment packages internationally.

This AMPV prototype features Oshkosh Defense’s Medium Caliber Weapon System (MCWS), a 30mm weapon system with planned fielding to the U.S. Army’s Stryker Brigade Combat Teams. The vehicle’s ExMEP can adapt to more than 30 different turret systems and builds on the vehicle’s modularity. This creates a seamless path for international customers to address various mission needs with the AMPV platform.

“This latest prototype demonstrates the capabilities of a common top plate and the options it provides our allies and NATO partners for rapid integration of next-generation technology onto a proven vehicle,” said Bill Sheehy, AMPV program director for BAE Systems. “The adaptability of the AMPV design means we are able to execute new capability integration quickly and efficiently, further proving the platform’s future-proofed design.”

BAE Systems integrated and successfully demonstrated a C-UAS prototype in November 2023, while also integrating and delivering a 120mm unmanned Turreted Mortar capability to the U.S. Army in January 2024. The AMPV NxT prototype was debuted with a 30mm turret at AUSA Global Force in March 2024—all three prototypes using the common top plate.

“No matter the mission, the AMPV will continue to provide the support troops need in battle for generations to come,” Sheehy said. “We look forward to furthering conversations with our allied nations about how fast and effectively we can adapt the AMPV for any operation or role that’s needed.”

Most recently, BAE Systems received a $754 m contract award from the U.S. Army to continue manufacturing the AMPV Family of Vehicles (FoV), guaranteeing a second phase of full-rate production (FRP) volumes through February 2027. This follows the original $797 m FRP contract that was awarded in August 2023.

The five variants currently in production provide enhanced survivability and performance over the legacy M113 FoV. The modular chassis and commonality of the AMPV have proven it to be a low-risk and cost-effective solution that rapidly delivers continued combat overmatch solutions to troop, ready for the battlefield.

The AMPV prototype will be on display in Hall 5A at stand B369.

 

17 Jun 24. Arquus announced a new contract with Barzan Holdings, strengthening our industrial collaboration.

Today at Eurosatory, Arquus welcomes Barzan Holdings on its booth (Hall 5a – F127) to sign contract for the modernisation of 54 VABs realised in Qatar.

Local modernisation programme for Qatar Armed Forces’ VAB fleet

The Qatar Armed Forces initially acquired VAB Mk1 vehicles in 1982, which have been supported by Arquus since then. In 2018, QAF decided to extend the life of these vehicles and signed a modernisation contract with Arquus. This vast programme includes not only the modernisation and modification of the vehicles but also their repair and the training of both industrial and military personnel in France and Qatar.

The first VABs is being modernised in France, while a production line is being established at a military base in Qatar. To date, 126 vehicles have been successfully modernised.

2023: a key year for the cooperation with Barzan

Arquus is honnored to be the first French defence company to localise the production of military vehicles in Qatar, a significant achievement that is a source of pride for both Arquus and the Qatari armed forces.

In July 2023, the French Minister of the Armed Forces, Sébastien Lecornu, visited the VAB assembly line in Qatar highlighting the potential for local production of armoured vehicles.

In the same year, a contract with Barzan Holdings was fulfilled. This contract included the training of 25 Qatari cadets in the maintenance of modernised VABs over a six-month period in France.

This training programme successfully culminated in the graduation of future maintenance officers, demonstrating Arquus’ commitment to skill development and knowledge sharing.

This 4×4 armoured combat vehicle will be showcased in the troop transport version and will manoeuvre over rugged terrain in a high-intensity scenario. Drawing from extensive experience on numerous operational theatres, Arquus has integrated the latest technologies and advanced processes into the FORTRESS MK2, making this product particularly effective and cohesive. Its new armoured hull provides the FORTRESS MK2 and its 10 passengers with very high levels of ballistic, mine, and IED (Improvised Explosive Device) protection, in compliance with STANAG 4569. Its high-mobility powertrain and independent wheel suspension give the FORTRESS MK2 superior mobility and an excellent power-to-weight ratio on all terrains. The Arquus armoured vehicle comes in troop transport, medical, or command post variants. The FORTRESS MK2 is in service with European Special Forces units.

17 Jun 24. Milrem Robotics’ Combat UGVs flood Eurosatory 2024. Milrem Robotics, the world-leading robotics and autonomous systems developer, together with world-renowned weapon systems providers, showcases a variety of weaponised unmanned combat vehicles at Eurosatory 2024, demonstrating the versatility of its market-leading UGV the THeMIS.

From the eight THeMIS UGVs demonstrated at Eurosatory 2024, taking place from June 17 until June 21, in Paris, France, four are equipped with weapon systems provided by top of their class technology providers: KONGSBERG, Thales, Leonardo and FN Herstal.

Additionally, KONGSBERG will showcase a THeMIS Combat with their PROTECTOR RS6, which features the powerful M230 LF 30mm cannon.

Announced in October 2023, but publicly displayed for the first time is the THeMIS with the HITROLE® Light Remote Weapon Station (RWS), one of the land turrets developed by Leonardo.

“Since the enemy cannot allow unmanned combat vehicles freedom of movement, they force them to reveal their positions by engaging the robotic system. By destroying the first line of enemy key assets and creating a hole in the enemy’s defensive or offensive posture, THeMIS Combat UGVs enhance the effectiveness of manned assets by creating momentum that human troops can leverage with fewer casualties,” Shepherd added.

Exhibited with Thales, the THeMIS Observe UGV intended for ISR features the deFNder® Light of FN Herstal’s RWS family. It can integrate all FN Herstal machine guns up to 7.62mm calibre.

Control and information are distributed to reduce the cognitive load on the crew. For the commander, the Battlenet system provides better overall tactical awareness and shorter response times. 14 Jun 24. US Stryker production resumes after lengthy upgrade issues.

The US Army’s bid to upgrade the Stryker’s firepower resulted in hardware and software issues impacting production.

General Dynamics will restart production of the 8×8 Stryker combat vehicle after the US Army called for a lengthy pause in manufacturing in February 2023, due to problems that had befallen the upgraded system.

The US Department of Defense released details of the new contract worth $66m on 7 June 2024. The government stipulated that the contractor will complete delivery of the double V-hull A1 version by the end of 2026. Work locations and funding will be determined with each order.

Stryker is a family of four or eight-wheel-drive combat vehicles that entered service with the Army in 2002.

They are available in ten forms, including the personnel carrier, commander’s vehicle, medical evacuation, fire support, engineer squad, anti-tank guided missile, mortar, reconnaissance, mobile gun system, and nuclear, biological and chemical reconnaissance vehicle.

So far the US has donated 189 Stryker armoured personnel carriers to Ukraine in its war against invading Russian forces; the open-source intelligence group Oryx found that nine of these have been destroyed and two damaged.

Timeline

One of the most significant upgrades was the delivery of the first double-V hull design in August 2022. This enhanced the vehicle’s ability to protect occupants from underbelly blasts like those from IEDs. In response to emerging threats, particularly from Russia in Eastern Europe, the Army recognised the need for a Stryker variant with more firepower.

In August 2022 Oshkosh Corporation’s subsidiary Oshkosh Defense Stryker delivered the double-V hull infantry carrier vehicle to the US Army, featuring the 30mm medium calibre weapon system.

In June 2021, the Army selected Oshkosh Defense and partners Pratt Miller Defense and Rafael to integrate them.

However, in mid-March this year, a US Government Accountability Office (GAO) report stated that the Army’s bid to upgrade the firepower of its Stryker vehicles in response to lessons learned in Ukraine resulted in hardware and software issues impacting the platform.

Published on 20 March, the GAO report stated that as the US Army sought to upgrade its existing Stryker vehicles with more firepower, it did so without “fully analysing and addressing potential production risks”, resulting in issues arising during the programme.

The consequences of the problems to the Stryker upgrade resulted in the US Army halting acceptance of vehicles in February 2023, after 19 had been delivered.

What can we expect?

As with any military equipment, there is a continuous effort to modernise and adapt to changing battlefield requirements, the US Army stated. Future upgrades might include electrification, better cyber protection, integration of autonomous systems, or even more advanced weapon systems.

What we know for sure is that Stryker will still remain a mechanised asset within a wider system of systems network.

This hybrid structure is leaning increasingly on uncrewed autonomous systems deployed to ‘trade blood for first contact’, as the new Army saying goes. 18 Jun 24. Babcock International Group (Babcock), the defence company, has taken the wraps off the new medium wheelbase variant of its military utility platform, the General Logistics Vehicle (GLV), at Eurosatory this week.

With reliability at its core, ensuring higher availability of critical assets, the medium wheelbase variant joins its long wheelbase sibling as the second member of the growing GLV family of vehicles, designed and delivered by Babcock,

Under the bonnet is a 2.8-litre engine achieving 200bhp and 370lb/ft of torque which, married to a six-speed, automatic gearbox with high and low range transfer provides the GLV with formidable, affordable off-road capability.  With a 39-degree approach angle, 276 mm ground clearance, a wading depth up to 1.8 meters and boasting a class-leading 12.6 metre turning circle, it is deployable in all terrains across the globe.

14 Jun 24. KNDS unveils new Leopard and Leclerc main battle tank concepts.

“The fire power of the Leopard 2 A-RC 3.0 is augmented by a guided missile system with which targets beyond line of sight can also be engaged while on the move,” said KNDS.

Franco-German KNDS will showcase two new main battle tank concepts at next week’s Eurosatory conference in Paris: advanced versions of Leopard 2 and Leclerc vehicles.

A Leopard 2 A-RC 3.0 tank, complete with an unmanned, remote controlled turret is to be displayed alongside the Leclerc Evolution vehicle, fitted with a manned turret and integrated with a 120mm Ascalon gun, according to a company statement released today.

KNDS is a joint venture between Germany’s Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and France’s Nexter. The manufacturer noted that the main weapon of the A-RC 3.0 vehicle “is loaded by a modular, automatic linear loader and calibres between 120 and 140mm can be selected.”

In addition, extra space in the chassis has been achieved through a new weapon mount, enabling up to four crew members to be inside the chassis, all supported by a protective crew cell, added KNDS.

“The ballistic protection is supplemented by a proven active protection system and a remote-controlled [30mm] weapon station to counter drone threats,” said the manufacturer. “The fire power of the Leopard 2 A-RC 3.0 is augmented by a guided missile system with which targets beyond line of sight can also be engaged while on the move.”

A spokesperson for KNDS also told Breaking Defense that other advantages of integrating an unmanned turret include a reduction of vehicle weight, a “decrease in detectability” due to a lower electromagnetic profile, and “threats from above hav[ing] to pass through much more armour.”

Based off a modular design approach, any Leopard 2 vehicles, regardless of variant, can be upgraded to the A-RC 3.0 configuration.

The new vehicle has been self-funded by the manufacturer to date, according to the KNDS spokesperson, declining to share an approximate cost.

The latest version of the Leopard 2, builds off the 2A8 standard, on order by Germany and Norway. Jana Cernochova, Czech Republic defense minister, also said today in a translated social media post on X (formerly Twitter) that Prague intends on moving ahead with plans to buy 61 of the vehicles in six configurations, supported by an option to buy a further 16 platforms, at a cost of  39.8 bn CZK ($1.7 bn).

Though the acquisition has not been formally approved, it has been moved to a list of Czech Republic strategic military projects, added Cernochova. As previously committed to, Prague plans on joining the German Leopard 2A8 procurement.

Building A Bridge

KNDS also shared that the newer Leopard 2 A-RC 3.0 vehicle is seen as a “bridge solution” to the Franco-German Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) future main battle tank and a “decisive technological precursor” to the multinational effort.

In April, KNDS Deutschland, KNDS France, Rheinmetall Landsysteme and Thales announced plans to develop a four-party MGCS joint venture, a move that followed French and German officials signing the “phase 1a” agreement, kickstarting development of the next generation tank.

On Tuesday, KNDS announced it had abandoned talks with Leonardo to close on a joint partnership aimed at developing and producing an Italian version of the Leopard 2A8, as the two sides failed to agree on a common configuration. The split also means MGCS cooperation and how to jointly pursue an Italian IFV requirement has ended.

Regarding the Leclerc Evolution unveiling, KNDS said the vehicle can accommodate four crew members and hosts a deputy commander crew station in the chassis, for management of “an extensive sensors and effectors suite.”

Inclusion of the Ascalon main gun on the vehicle follows on from a May firing campaign where KNDS fired from both 120mm and 140mm barrels. Ascalon is positioned by the manufacturer as the ideal gun solution for MGCS and, it argues, it creates “the foundations for the future standard of European tank gun and ammunition.” The wider firing program, which first started in 2022 is set to finish in December 2025, and will include main battle tank firings. 13 Jun 24. Terem Holding to partially assemble Strykers in Bulgaria. Bulgarian Ministry of Defense (MoD) owned Terem Holding will partially assemble Stryker armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs) scheduled to arrive in Bulgaria from mid-2025 onwards, the company’s head of Research & Development, Luben Yovchev, told Janes at the HEMUS 2024 defence exhibition in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, on 6 June.

The partial assembly was negotiated to offset some of the USD1.5 bn investment made in purchasing the vehicles.

The deal includes 90 M1296 infantry carrier vehicles (ICVs), 17 M1126 ICVs, 33 M1130 command vehicles, nine M1132 engineer squad vehicles, 24 M1133 medical evacuation vehicles, and 10 M1135 nuclear, biological, chemical reconnaissance vehicles, along with various additional subsystems and heavy equipment transporters.

Terem Holding’s executive director Kalin Dimitrov told local press on 17 May that Terem will be responsible for completing the final assembly of the Stryker vehicles, installing subsystems including radios, weapons, and night vision devices. Separately Yovchev told Janes that this assembly will include adding turrets to the Stryker hulls. This will be completed at the Terem’s ‘Ivaylo’ plant in Veliko Tarnovo, Dimitrov said, adding that General Dynamic Land Systems has also transferred technical documentation to enable the production of spare parts in the medium term.

In recent years, Terem has gained experience at integrating modern subsystems into vehicles for the Bulgarian army, notably the T-72 upgrade using subsystems from Elbit. The T-72 upgrade programme is due to be finished by the end of 2024. (Source: Janes)

 

14 Jun 24. Eyes on Ukraine, demand for tanks is bubbling up in Eastern Europe. Drawing lessons from the ongoing war in Ukraine, several Eastern European allies are aiming to buy new tanks after years of neglect in this capability area.

German, South Korean and American producers are intensively competing for orders from the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania and Slovakia, among others, amid a spike in demand for tracked platforms across the region.

Slovakia recently unveiled plans to buy new tanks, and local observers say the country wants to acquire up to 104 such vehicles. The potential purchase could radically increase the capacities of its land forces, which currently relies on about 30 outdated Soviet-designed T-72M1 tanks as well as second-hand, Germany-donated Leopard 2A4 tanks.

Germany gave 15 Leopard tanks to Slovakia following the transfer of its 30 BVP-1 infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine.

“The Slovak Defence Ministry plans to acquire tanks — a main battle tank,” a spokesperson for the ministry told Defense News, noting that “an internal analysis of the market and possible methods of the acquisition is underway.”

The spokesperson said the ministry “does not currently have any offers, as it has not yet announced any selection process or public tender for the acquisition of tanks.”

The latest announcement comes as one of Slovakia’s neighbors, the Czech Republic, is advancing negotiations with Germany to carry out a joint acquisition of Leopard 2A8 tanks.

In December 2023, Czech Defence Minister Jana Černochová declared the government is seeking a more affordable price tag and quicker delivery time from KNDS, the Franco-German producer.

On June 12, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala announced his government approved a plan to order up to 77 Leopard 2A8 tanks for the country’s armed forces.

“The Army of the Czech Republic could have a heavy brigade armed with more than 120 Leopard 2A4 and 2A8 tanks after 2030. The government has approved the intention of the Ministry of Defence to implement the purchase of 61 Leopard 2A8 tanks with an option for a further 16 tanks,” the prime minister’s office said in a statement.

“In addition, the Army already has 15 Leopard 2A4 tanks, the same amount will be received as a donation from Germany in the near future, and the Czech Republic intends to buy a further 15 under favorable conditions,” the office noted.

For Slovakia, joining the planned German-Czech purchase of Leopard 2A8s could provide potential benefits compared with an individual acquisition of tracked platforms. Local media reported that Slovak Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák has already discussed involving his country’s defense industry in manufacturing these tanks.

Meanwhile, Romania is gearing to acquire the M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams for its Land Forces after the U.S. State Department approved a potential foreign military sale of 54 such tanks, made by the American firm General Dynamics Land Systems, along with related combat recovery vehicles, assault breacher vehicles and other gear.

The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency said the planned procurement is worth about $2.53 bn. However, Romania-based observers expect its final value will be significantly lower.

In April 2022, Poland signed a deal worth about $4.75 bn to also buy the M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams with related equipment. It plans to acquire a total of 250 of these tanks.

In addition to the Abrams, Romania is also considering the purchase of South Korean-made K2 Black Panthers manufactured by Hyundai Rotem. Poland has also purchased this tank type.

Alexandru Georgescu, a Bucharest-based security and defense analyst, told Defense News it is likely Romania will decide to acquire South Korean tanks following recent trials of the vehicle.

“Romania has had a tendency — that is often criticized — to also spread its orders around instead of concentrating them for logistical purposes. Ultimately, it depends on the results of the requirements formulation of the Armed Forces and how the various actors meet them. We had recent exhibition trials in the Smârdan firing range near the city of Galați,” Georgescu said.

“The K2 Black Panther MBT [main battle tank] was tested on May 17. The tendency of Romania to follow in Poland’s footsteps as a form of coordination for improved synergies in logistics also speaks in favor of the K2,” the analyst added.

Poland has recently demonstrated a strong preference for American and South Korean tanks, leading Warsaw to purchase used M1A1 and new M1A2 Abrams as well as K2 Black Panthers. However, the swearing in of a new centrist government in December could pave the way for more European tank projects. In May 2024, OBRUM, a subsidiary of the Polish government-run defense giant PGZ, announced its readiness to join a European Defence Fund-backed program aimed at developing a new main battle tank for Europe.

Defense News has reached out with requests for comment regarding Eastern Europe expansion plans to General Dynamics Land Systems, the maker of the M1A2 Abrams, KNDS, which manufactures the Leopard 2A8, and Hyundai Rotem, the producer of the K2 Black Panther.

13 Jun 24. India rolls out T-90 Mk-III tanks. India’s state-owned Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL) has delivered the first batch of 10 T-90 Mk-III main battle tanks (MBTs) to the Indian Army, a senior AVNL official told Janes on 12 June.

“The tanks are newly produced by AVNL’s Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF) under [a] licensing agreement with Russia,” the official said. The Indian Army signed a contract with HVF in November 2019 to procure 464 new T-90MS tanks, and the delivery is part of this contract, the official added.

According to the official, the T-90 Mk-III is equipped with a “new” automatic target tracking system, a digital ballistic computer, and sighting systems. It is also fitted with a midwave infrared (MWIR)-based commander sight jointly developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).

According to the Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD), this sight employs a thermal imager capable of detecting targets at 8 km during day and night and a laser rangefinder (LRF) to find ranges up to 5 km, thereby enhancing its capability to engage targets at longer ranges.

“With the corrections from ballistic software and LRF, the commander of T-90 can detect, engage, and neutralise the targets with accuracy,” the MoD added.

The remaining fleet of 454 T-90 Mk-IIIs will be delivered to the Indian Army in phases over the next five years, the AVNL official said. The official added that HVF is also upgrading the Indian Army’s in-service T-90S tanks to T-90MS standards. (Source: Janes)

Otokar, the global land systems manufacturer of Türkiye, will showcase seven vehicles and turret systems at Eurosatory 2024, the global event for defense and security from June 17-21 in Paris, France. Otokar’s armored medium unmanned ground vehicle ALPAR and multi wheeled armored land vehicle ARMA II, the new member of Otokar’s world-renowned ARMA family will make their global debut during the event.

Vehbi added that Otokar not only supplies military vehicles but also develops solutions tailored to clients’ needs, “We closely monitor our clients’ requirements and current threats to provide optimal solutions for armed and security forces. STRONG, AGILE AND SMART WINGMAN IN COMBAT ZONES: ALPAR

Designed as a medium unmanned ground vehicle, ALPAR marks a first for the Turkish defense industry. ALPAR, developed by Otokar as an unmanned platform capable of undertaking missions together with manned and unmanned assets in the battlefield to meet the needs of the armed forces for robotic and unmanned ground vehicles, has a maximum combat weight of 15 tonnes. Equipped with autonomous systems and AI systems, the vehicle is designed to reduce personnel risk on the battlefield, improve the success of high threat missions, conducting routine tasks, by reducing the number of personnel in the field using AI and data analytics, and increase efficiency in the battlefield by communicating with unmanned aerial vehicles and other assets in the battlefield. ALPAR stands out with a low thermal footprint, dimensions and weight to be airlifted, and a fast-change battery infrastructure. Moreover, ALPAR increases its mission capability with a mini-unmanned ground vehicle that it can carry.

With a modular design, ALPAR can be configured as a fire support vehicle, logistics support vehicle, air defense vehicle, and anti-tank vehicle suitable for missions such as advanced reconnaissance and surveillance. The vehicle, which features a serial hybrid electric drive system and runs in complete silence, can be operated autonomously with remote control. The vehicle is also equipped with Adaptive Drive Support Systems developed by Otokar.

POWERFUL SOLUTION TO ASYMMETRICAL THREATS: ARMA II

ARMA II 8×8 Armored Vehicle, the new member of the ARMA series developed by Otokar considering the conventional combat conditions as well as the most common asymmetrical threats today, is showcased at Eurosatory 2024 with a John Cockerill 105 mm turret. ARMA II offers best-in-class ballistic, mine and improvised explosive device (IED) protection and optimal terrain capability. With a maximum Gross Vehicle Weight of 40 tons, ARMA II comes with higher payload and improved protection, and can be configured for the integration of heavy weapon systems up to 120mm caliber. ARMA II is equipped with a 12.7-liter, 6-cylinder, turbodiesel, 720 HP engine. ARMA II offers a platform suitable for many different missions; from armored combat vehicle to armored personnel carrier; from command and control vehicles to air defense missions. With the extra interior volume provided by the expanded hull, ARMA II is the most superior vehicle in its class with the modularity to operate as a maintenance and repair vehicle or an ambulance.

NEXT-GENERATION ARMORED COMBAT VEHICLE: TULPAR

TULPAR, one of Otokar’s world-renowned armored vehicles that has garnered high interest in recent years, is exhibited at Eurosatory 2024 with a Leonardo 120 mm turret. TULPAR stands out with mobility, high firepower, and survivability features. TULPAR is designed as a multi-purpose tracked vehicle with variants ranging from 28,000kg to 45,000kg to fully satisfy the modern armies’ existing and future requirements.

TULPAR comes in several variants including but not limited to Light/medium tank, Infantry Fighting Vehicle, Recovery Vehicle, Mortar Vehicle, Air Defence Weapon Carrier, Fire Support, Medical Evacuation having common subsystems. Tested in the toughest climates and on rough terrain conditions, TULPAR boosts high ballistic and mine protection with modular armor.

In addition to its high fire and destruction power, with its high mobility TULPAR, can serve in all kinds of combat environments from urban, built-up areas and light bridges to woodlands and all terrains, especially soft surfaces where main battle tanks are unable to operate due to their heavy weights.

A MODULAR POWERHOUSE ADAPTABLE TO DIFFERENT MISSIONS: COBRA II

COBRA II 4×4 tactical wheeled armored vehicle, serving in active missions in more than 15 countries worldwide, offers high level of protection, payload, and large interior volume. In addition to its superior mobility, COBRA II offers high protection against ballistic, mine, and IED threats. With high power to weight ratio COBRA II delivers high performance. The vehicle is operated by many armies in different parts of the world, on toughest terrain and climate conditions.

Being suitable for the integration of wide range of weapon and mission equipment options, COBRA II is successfully in service for border protection as well as internal security and peacekeeping missions in different users. The modular structure of COBRA II also makes the vehicle a flexible platform to be used as a personnel carrier, anti-tank weapons platform, Reconnaissance & Surveillance, CBRN reconnaissance vehicle, command control vehicle, recovery and medical evacuation. Otokar exhibits COBRA II with Keskin 12.7 mm RCWS  at Europe’s largest defense and security fair.

THE STEALTHY EYES ON THE BATTLEFIELD: AKREP II

AKREP II, featuring a low silhouette, agility and terrain capability, is exhibited at Eurosatory with a John Cockerill 90 mm turret system. AKREP II, built on Otokar’s initial AKREP developed in 1990s, is designed as an armored reconnaissance and surveillance vehicle and a large caliber weapon platform. Combining high firepower and survivability in a low silhouette, the AKREP II meets the current and future needs of modern armies by accommodating turrets up to 90mm cannon.

The four-wheel drive system and steerable rear axle of AKREP II greatly enhances the maneuverability capability of the vehicle. The vehicle has a superior mobility and handling capabilities in all terrain conditions no matter mud, snow or puddles. Its compact design, high level of both kinetic and mine protection, and the U-type power package placed at the rear of the vehicle make AKREP II a very special and competitive platform especially where the maneuverability is crowned with crab steering.

As a multi-role vehicle suitable for different types of missions, AKREP II provides effective firepower without compromising survivability as it can accommodate up to 90 mm caliber turrets.  AKREP II can also be configured for the missions like surveillance, reconnaissance, air defense, forward observer, etc.

MODULAR MULTI-WHEELED ARMORED VEHICLE: ARMA

ARMA, Otokar’s multi-wheeled modular armored vehicle with high tactical and technical capabilities, is exhibited in two different models. ARMA, featuring superior mobility, high mine and ballistic protection, offers medium and high caliber weapons system integration options to serve in peacekeeping and humanitarian missions in the most challenging terrain and climate conditions. ARMA, which is also available with an amphibious kit, impresses with its high combat payload and spacious interiors. ARMA family, which can be equipped with different weapon and turret systems in response to different requirements, can be adapted to diverse missions with variants such as armored personnel carrier, armored combat vehicle, command control, and CBRN reconnaissance vehicle. ARMA 6×6 is exhibited with Mızrak 25 mm Turret and ARMA 8×8 with Mızrak 30 mm Turret at the Otokar booth at Eurosatory 2024.

 

17 Jun 24. GM Defense eyes $1bn European market for tactical vehicles. GM Defense hopes that a resurgence of the car giant’s commercial business in Europe will pave the way for sales of militarized trucks used by special operations units, a company executive said.

The company makes the Infantry Squad vehicle, based on the Colorado pickup truck, which is in production for vanguard U.S. Army formations including the 82nd Airborne Division, and is readying a slightly larger variant, the Light Tactical Wheeled Vehicle, based on the Silverado truck.

Executives now hope to find buyers in Europe, with acquisition competitions Denmark, Spain and the U.K. adding to a combined $1 bn in potential business, according to Bradley Watters, vice president of international development.

The push aims to cut into the hold of the militarized Mercedes Benz’s G-class rides popular with armed forces here, Watters explained. The key proposition is similar: The backing of an automotive industry titan means assured spare parts and scaleable pricing. Plus, he added, electrification options provide stealthy operations on the battlefield, among other advantages.

“GM is making a comeback in Europe,” Watters said in an interview ahead of the Eurosatory trade show here. Last fall, the company opened a showroom in Zurich, Switzerland, for the Cadillac brand, followed by another one here late last month. “Our customers tell us, ‘We like big U.S. trucks,’” Watters said.

Notably, GM Defense’s campaign relies on vehicle nimbleness over armor. The ISV vehicles are constructed without major protection at all, banking instead on the idea that dicey battlefield situations are best left in the rear-view mirror.

If sales materialize, they would likely come in the form of direct commercial sales, as opposed to foreign military sales through the U.S. government. That‘s because the U.S. Army is just at the beginning of outfitting its own formations, Watters said. (Source: Defense News)

 

17 Jun 24. Teledyne FLIR Defense Announces New SUGV 325. Lightweight, multi-mission unmanned ground system represents the cutting edge in portable robotics. Teledyne FLIR Defense, part of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE:TDY), announced today at Eurosatory the official launch of its new SUGV™ 325 portable and modular robot.

The SUGV 325 is a single-person-carry unmanned ground platform offering a versatile solution for dismounted and mobile operations. In its lightest configuration the rugged SUGV 325 weighs only about 20 pounds (9.1 kg), making it easy to carry while also able to traverse rough terrain and climb stairs. The robot’s advanced manipulator arm features five degrees of freedom, enabling users to conduct highly delicate and complex tasks. Technology upgrades on the new SUGV 325 include an array of sensors, such as HD visible, long wave infrared (LWIR), and stitched 360-degree cameras, as well as 30x optical zoom and two-way audio communication.

SUGV 325’s new features and capabilities make it ideally suited for military applications such as surveillance and reconnaissance, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), and remote Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) inspection, among others.

“Our new SUGV 325 delivers enhanced portability and technology that make a wide range of operations easier for our warfighters,” said Tung Ng, vice president of Unmanned Systems North America at Teledyne FLIR Defense. “With its superior mobility and situational awareness, this multi-mission robot gives users a highly-mobile system to keep them from harm’s way when interrogating threats.

“We’re proud to offer the new SUGV 325 as we continue innovating our entire portfolio of unmanned ground platforms for customers worldwide,” Ng added.

Key features of the SUGV 325 include:

  • Improved Mobility: With its enhanced portability and speeds up to 7 mph (11.3 kph), SUGV 325 can be rapidly deployed, allowing operators to quickly interrogate a device or target.
  • Expandable: An IOP-compliant payload open architecture accommodates a wide range of payloads and accessories, enabling operators to configure the robot to their mission.
  • Multi-Robot Control: The uPoint® Multi-Robot Control System features a tablet with touchscreen control as well as a hand-controller. Scales to various Android tablet sizes and is Nett Warrior and ATAK compatible.
