18 Jun 24. Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks will produce more than 1,500 Zetros logistics trucks for a major order from the Canadian Department of National Defence. The Canadian Armed Forces plans to use the vehicles for the off-road transportation of goods and personnel. Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks, Marshall Canada, Soframe, Manac, and General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada (GDLS-Canada) make up the commissioned “The Power Team” consortium. The five enterprises are working together to implement the order for the modernization of the Canadian logistics fleet as part of the “Logistics Vehicle Modernization” (LVM) project.

Franziska Cusumano, Head of Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks, said: “We are delighted to be working with our four strong partners to equip the Canadian logistics fleet. This contract reflects the level of confidence one of the largest NATO countries has in our partner network – in our experience, reliability and technical competence. Together, we will supply the right products and provide the best possible in-service support for many years to come.”

The highly off-road-capable trucks of the Zetros model series will serve as the common vehicle chassis and will be produced in Wörth am Rhein. Marshall Canada will produce a range of interchangeable 10ft and 20ft mission modules capable of being mounted onto Mercedes-Benz Zetros trucks. Manac will provide different trailers, while Soframe is in charge of the armor for the vehicles. General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada (GDLS-Canada) will serve as prime integrator in this procurement project of the Canadian Department of National Defence. In total, Canada will receive over 1,000 light Zetros (two-axle vehicles with all-wheel drive, 4×4) and approximately 500 heavy Zetros (four-axle vehicles with all-wheel drive, 8×8).

One of the vehicles for the Canadian Department of National Defence, the new four-axle, all-wheel drive Zetros 8×8, can now be seen at the Eurosatory trade fair in Paris until June 21st.

 

12 Jun 24. Estonian-made combat robots in Ukraine now come with Starlink. Estonian-made THeMIS unmanned ground vehicles operating in Ukraine will feature Starlink satellite connectivity, enabling their operation from thousands of kilometers away, the robot manufacturer announced on Wednesday. A vehicle equipped to that effect, made by United Arab Emirates-owned and Estonia-based Milrem Robotics, will be unveiled at the company’s during Eurosatory 2024 trade show that begins next week, according to a company statement,

Specifically, a THeMIS variant devoted to cargo transportation will feature the Starlink hookup, a constellation of internet satellites operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX. Milrem has given more than dozen THeMIS vehicles to Ukrainian forces.

The Estonian company sought out the expertise of the Dutch datalinks firm AEC Skyline for the integration of the vehicles’ latest add-on feature, Milrem said.

“By leveraging satellite connectivity, the THeMIS robotic vehicle, which is currently assisting Ukrainian soldiers in the war with Russia, can seamlessly transmit data, receive commands, and relay vital information in real-time, regardless of its location on the battlefield,” the Milrem statement reads.

Using the Starlink satellite system requires a ground terminal, which SpaceX started shipping to Kyiv only hours after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, according to the BBC. As of June 2023, the British broadcaster reported that there were tens of thousands of terminals in Ukraine, including 500 bought by the U.S. Department of Defense.

Starlink satellites operate in low-Earth orbit at less than 600 kilometers (370 miles) above the earth, according to the company. Being closer to Earth translates into better performance for the system’s intended applications.

12 Jun 24. Robotic vehicles to fight with enemy forces in Army training event. The U.S. Army’s Robotic Combat Vehicles will fight with the opposing force in an upcoming training rotation, according to Maj. Gen. Geoff Norman, who is in charge of the service’s combat vehicle modernization efforts.

While the Army has experimented a great deal with RCV surrogates and prototypes in recent years, including a major event that evaluated how humans and machines will fight together on a future battlefield, the opportunity to evaluate how the service will fight an opposing force with similar robotic capability has been limited until now.

Norman told Defense News in an interview that there will be two National Training Center rotations this summer. A unit out of Fort Stewart in Georgia will go up against an RCV platoon. The next unit out of Fort Riley in Kansas will take the same RCV platoon and attach it to blue force.

“That’s going to be really exciting to do another round of learning and experimentation at the premier training event for those units,” Norman said.

Also this summer, the Army will receive two prototypes each from four teams competing to build the Army’s Robotic Combat Vehicle program-of-record platform. The service will then kick off a competition and “pick the best of breed,” Norman said.

The prototypes will undergo automotive testing at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, and Yuma Proving Ground, Arizona, beginning in August.

“The government can choose one or more of those prototypes to go forward into phase two of the program of record effort,” Norman said. “The downselect decision to one or more happens in the springtime,” of next year, he added.

The Army selected last year McQ, Textron Systems, General Dynamics Land Systems and Oshkosh Defense to build the light RCV prototypes.

The service is aiming to field to the first unit in fiscal 2028 following a production decision slated for FY27.

The Army is also trying to get one platoon set of RCVs to an Army Forces Command unit to continue more experimentation, but it is currently still working on resourcing the effort. “We’re hopeful that materializes but that’s an open issue that we’re working through,” Norman said.

At the same time, Norman’s team is working closely with the armor commandant’s office, the Maneuver Capability Development and Integration Directorate at Fort Moore, Georgia, to refine the organizational designs for what an RCV platoon might look like and what other equipment it might have.

“They’ve taken the RCV playbook that we’ve developed at a couple of different experiments and they’re now taking that to work on some initial doctrine or probably standing operating procedure, to standardize some of the tactics, techniques and procedures that robotic autonomous systems operators need,” Norman said.

The Army is also working prototyping control vehicles for the RCVs using an Armored Multipurpose Vehicle and a Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle. The service has already developed a Stryker control vehicle prototype, according to Norman. The Joint Light Tactical Vehicle will also be configured as a control vehicle; that prototyping will follow work on the AMPV and Bradley.

12 Jun 24. Bundeswehr orders another 1,515 military trucks from Rheinmetall out of special fund within framework contract – order value over €920m. Rheinmetall has been commissioned by the Bundeswehr with a further delivery of 1,515 logistic vehicles, 265 of which are protected swap-body systems. This is another call-off from the framework contract for swap-body systems (WLS) signed in June 2020. This large-scale call-off is largely financed by the Bundeswehr’s special fund. In addition to the vehicles, the Bundeswehr’s procurement agency, BAAINBw, ordered 500 swap-body platforms to serve as interchangeable load carriers and 500 tarpaulin / roof bow setups. The call-off is worth over €920m gross. Delivery of the vehicles will take place in the second half of 2024 and will be completed by mid-November 2024.

“The extensive call-off from the framework contract, financed by the special fund shows the high relevance of Bundeswehr logistics in the conection with the turning point. By delivering all vehicles by the end of 2024, the special fund is helping to directly equip and strengthen the logistical capabilities and sustainability of the armed forces,” explains Michael Wittlinger, chairman of the management of Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles GmbH. “With over 4,000 vehicles delivered since 2018, our HX-series military trucks are now an essential component of the Bundeswehr’s logistical capabilities and underline the importance of Rheinmetall for logistics.”

In June 2020, the BAAINBw concluded a framework contract with Rheinmetall until 2027 for the delivery of up to 4,000 trucks with swap-body systems, of which 1,008 have already been delivered. The swap-body trucks join the successful project of Unprotected Transport Vehicles, or UTFs, and expand the Bundeswehr’s fleet of vehicles from the military HX family. The swap-body system’s core equipment is the hook-loader developed by Hiab. It can lift and set down the swap-body carriers in the Bundeswehr in virtually any type of terrain with no need for additional handling equipment. As an alternative, the vehicles can carry a swap-body platform or a container via a standardised 20-foot ISO interface.

A large share of the swap-body trucks for the Bundeswehr will feature an armoured cab, substantially enhancing crew survivability and sustainment as well as the tactical flexibility of logistic units and formations. Swap-body trucks are used primarily for supplying combat formations with bulk consumables such as ammunition, fuel and water.

Both the swap-body systems and UTFs are based on Rheinmetall’s robust HX family of vehicles. Designed from the outset for military use, they assure excellent mobility even in rough terrain. Moreover, the widespread presence of the HX family offers major advantages in terms of interoperability and logistics, particularly during multinational deployments. At present, the user nations include, among other nations, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Austria, Hungary and Denmark. Together with the Bundeswehr and the armed forces of Germany’s partners, Rheinmetall is eager to continue writing the ongoing HX vehicles’ success story.

 

13 Jun 24. G3 Systems breathes new life into the British Army’s Tactical Containerised Dog Accommodation. G3 Systems has announced a rolling refurbishment programme, contracted by the UK MoD’s Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) agency, to extend the working life of their operationally proven and highly acclaimed Tactical Containerised Dog Accommodation (TCDA) for use by 1st Military Working Dogs (MWD) Regiment, based at St Georges Barracks, North Luffenham, Rutland.

The G3 Systems designed and manufactured TCDA capability was first delivered into service in 2008 as an Urgent Operational Requirement (UOR) to accommodate search dogs operating in the extreme conditions of Iraq and Afghanistan.  As the Military Working Dog capability expanded, and with an ever-increasing IED threat in theatre, a further 12 TCDA systems were rapidly procured and delivered into service in 2011.  All the TCDA systems were initially permanently deployed in Afghanistan until they were returned to the UK in 2014 for use on future operations.  On their return, the TCDA were refurbished by G3 Systems prior to their relocation for use at North Luffenham, by 1st MWD Regiment.  Since then, the TCDA capability has remained in full operational use in the home base, deployed on various operations and are now maintained at readiness to deploy at short notice as required.

This year DE&S, under the Amphora contract, have engaged G3 Systems to complete a more extensive refurbishment and improvement programme for 22 TCDA units to further extend the life of this excellent capability.  This demonstrates the extreme robustness of the G3 Systems solution and the importance the Customer places on the quality and durability of the bespoke G3 Systems design.  In addition to basic refurbishment and compliance work, this new programme of works includes the addition of a winterisation modification, to enhance the dog’s protection from the extremes of weather during winter months.  This programme demonstrates excellent value for money for the tax-payer and ensures that those who help to protect us have the best possible facilities to operate in the most extremes of environments.

12 Jun 24. Norway set to build Leopard 2 tanks on home soil for the first time. Hailed as a “new industrial adventure” by the Minister for Defence, the agreement will ensure development of the nation’s future 2A8 units on home soil. KNDS Germany has agreed to expand its production of Leopard 2 main battle tanks (MBTs) to Norway.

An agreement was signed on 11 June 2024, between the producer and its new Norwegian subcontractor, an engineering company called RITEK, which will kick-start production in Trøndelag county in central Norway.

This will be the first time in history that MBTs will be built in the Nordic nation. The prospect was welcomed as a “new industrial adventure” by Norway’s Minister for Defence, Bjorn Arild Gram.

RITEK will begin to deliver the remaining 37 of the 54 Leopard 2A8 units that the Norwegian Government ordered from the German contractor worth $1.8bn (Nkr19.7bn) at the end of February 2023.

“The plan is for RITEK not only to assemble the Norwegian Leopard wagons, but also to become a Nordic hub for maintenance, repair and upgrading of the Nordic Leopard fleet,” Gram added.

According to GlobalData intelligence, the Nordic region collectively operate more than 500 Leopard MBTs.

Norway currently employs 94 Leopard 1s, 42 2A4s and 10 2A5s; Sweden uses 120 2A5s; Finland has 100 2A4s and 100 2A6s; while Denmark runs 7 Leopard 1s and 44 2A7s.

“The production line is planned to be maintained after the Norwegian wagons have been produced, so that RITEK can continue to produce wagons to be exported to other countries. This is positive for both local value creation and Norwegian readiness.”

While RITEK will deliver the Leopard wagon and wider Nordic maintenance of the platforms, Rheinmetall will deliver other key components such as the 120-millimetre L55A1 cannon, fire control technology and parts of its sensor suite nearly two months after Norway placed the order. This expands the Europe’s Leopard supply chains considerably, giving the European platform an edge over competition from other systems such as the Korean K2 Black Panther, which Norway had originally contemplated before it selected the Leopard 2 last year. 13 Jun 24. Smarter Technologies’ prove their Orion Asset Tracking capability on Operation LINOTYPER 24. Smarter Technologies Group (STG), the leading British provider of cloud-hosted Internet-of-Things (IoT) solutions, has continued its support to Army Logistics with a deployment of its Orion asset-tracking technology on Operation LINOTYPER.  The aim is to use IoT data to enrich the Recognised Logistics Picture, with reliable, relevant and timely management information. Testing the capability on operations is important for the Army to evaluate the benefits of innovative technology, refine its future requirements and drive the digital transformation of logistics to achieve Support Advantage.

Operation LINOTYPER 24 is the UK’s contribution to STEADFAST DEFENDER 24 (SD24), NATO’s largest manoeuvres since the cold war, with over 90,000 troops deployed across Europe from all 32 NATO countries.  SD24 is an emphatic demonstration of the Alliance’s unity, strength and determination against a rising threat, and the UK has deployed over 16,000 troops since January this year.

Smarter Technologies has extensive experience of high-value asset-tracking in the commercial sector and worked closely with Army Logistics, 101 Operational Support Brigade and 27 Regiment RLC on Exercise IRON TITAN 23 to demonstrate the benefits of automated asset-tracking at second line. That collaboration now extends across boundaries, to include 104 Theatre Support Brigade and 9 Regiment RLC at third line and manoeuvre brigades at first line. 10 The Queen’s Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment have also been important partners.

Over the course of LINOTYPER 24, STG has built upon IRON TITAN 23 to provide real-time data insight to commanders and staff across the logistics enterprise, enhance situational awareness and contribute to a robust common operating picture. As well as tracking mission-critical items through the supply system, sense and warn capabilities have been employed to support the emerging concept of digital supply areas.  Automated overwatch provides remote assurance and triggers alerts and notifications for appropriate response.  The result is timely and targeted intervention to incidents that optimises the employment of troops, allows greater logistic dispersion and enhances survivability without compromising security.

A particular highlight was the powerful integration of IoT sense and warn devices on the ground, mission-configurable and remotely accessible user interface dashboards at command-and-control nodes, surveillance drones used to investigate alerts and notifications, and quick reaction forces on quad bikes able to deploy rapidly and efficiently to address security incidents in the divisional support area.

11 Jun 24. KNDS-Leonardo rupture could nix Italian Leopard 2 tank buy. A major Italian acquisition of Leopard tanks is on the brink of collapsing after a cooperation deal between tank manufacturer KNDS and Italy’s Leonardo was scrapped on Tuesday due to a row over technology transfer. Announced in December 2023, the partnership between Leonardo and the German-French alliance was due to lead to an industrial role for the Italian defense giant in a large planned Italian purchase of Leopard tanks, including 130 combat versions.

Leonardo aimed to add its own components and electronics to the tank, which was to be assembled at its facility in La Spezia, Italy, but the surprise announcement by KNDS on Tuesday indicated Leonardo wanted more input that KNDS was prepared to offer.

“With 18 European user countries, Leopard 2 is the battle tank standard of our continent and of NATO. It is more important than ever to safeguard this standard, which makes a significant contribution to the interoperability and joint combat power of the European and NATO armies. The parties did not manage to agree on configuration,” Frank Haun, KNDS CEO, said in the statement.

KNDS, the statement added, “is no longer in talks with Leonardo regarding a potential partnership with the Italian company.”

Hours after KNDS issued its statement, Leonardo put out its own press release. “Leonardo announces, despite the efforts undertaken, the interruption of the negotiations with KNDS to define a common configuration for the Main Battle Tank program of the Italian Army and to develop a broader cooperation,” it stated.

”Leonardo confirms its commitment to provide the Italian Army with a performant, interoperable and up-to-date solution, satisfying the present requirements and remaining well positioned for future developments toward Main Ground Combat System, also through cooperation with other qualified international partners,” it added.

The breakdown in talks could yet have further fallout for Italian plans for a new tracked fighting vehicle and a possible entry by Leonardo into KNDS as a stake holder – a move which would have boosted the much vaunted and long delayed consolidation of the European land defense industry.

“Talks about Leonardo’s strategic participation in KNDS have also fallen short,” said Haun.

KNDS is a consortium of Germany’s Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and France’s Nexter.

Instead, the divorce shows that national interests in the industry are still paramount, despite the pressure from politicians to create synergies and bulk up in the face of Russian aggression and global competition.

While KNDS was keen to suggest in its statement that Leonardo was at fault for wanting to disrupt the uniformity of the Leopard model, one industry insider also pointed the finger at KNDS. “During talks, Italy was offered zero technology transfer, but you can’t offer an off-the-shelf tank when Leonardo has its own systems it can integrate,” said the source, who spoke on condition of not being identified.

A Leonardo official told Defense News earlier this year that the Italian firm was mulling supplying an electro-optical sensor, software defined radio, the command and control system and possibly the gun barrel to the tank.

A second industry source said Italy would now almost certainly cancel its purchase of Leopard tanks even though the process will be complicated by the fact the Italian parliament has voted for it.

“Italy may now consider buying the Rheinmetall Panther KF51 tank, even though it is just a prototype, unless the Italian army steps in and says it still wants the Leopard,” said the source, who also spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not permitted to speak on the record.

Last year’s Leonardo-KNDS cooperation deal also mentioned possible teaming on a separate Italian €5bn ($5.4bn) program to build 1,050 tracked fighting vehicles.

Leonardo and Italy’s Iveco Defence Vehicles are currently in the process of selecting a European partner to work with on the so-called A2CS program, with candidates including KNDS, which would propose its tracked Boxer vehicle as a baseline, while Rheinmetall has offered its Lynx.

“After this announcement today it is more difficult to imagine Italy working with KNDS on the A2CS program,” said the second source.

The rupture between KNDS and Leonardo could also have ramifications for Italy’s hoped-for entry into the European battle tank program known as the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS), which KNDS is running.

11 Jun 24. Leonardo and KNDS pull plug on main battle tank and IFV cooperation.

“The parties did not manage to agree on [Leopard] configuration and consequently, talks about Leonardo’s strategic participation in KNDS have also fallen short,” Frank Haun, CEO of KNDS NV, said in a company statement.

Italy’s Leonardo and the Franco-German KNDS walked away from negotiations today to close on a partnership based around joint development and production of the Leopard 2A8 main battle tank (MBT) after failing to agree on a configuration.

In a surprise announcement, KNDS said the company “is no longer in talks with Leonardo S.p.A. regarding a potential partnership,” relating to the latest version of the platform and an Italian requirement for new Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFV).

“The parties did not manage to agree on [Leopard] configuration and consequently, talks about Leonardo’s strategic participation in KNDS have also fallen short,” Frank Haun, CEO of KNDS NV, said in a company statement.

KNDS is a joint venture between Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Nexter. Talks between the company and Leonardo had originally opened in December 2023 after the European manufacturers signed an agreement to develop  “more intensive cooperation” converging around the stated aim of establishing “a truly European Defense Group.”

At the time, the commitment by the two parties also covered cooperation on the future Franco-German Main Ground Combat System (MGCS), suggesting the addition of Italy was on the way. It remains unclear if the decision to end cooperation with KNDS will prevent Leonardo from becoming an industrial partner in the multinational effort.

In April, KNDS Deutschland, KNDS France, Rheinmetall Landsysteme and Thales announced plans to develop a four-party MGCS joint venture days after French and German officials signed the “phase 1a” agreement, kickstarting development of the next generation tank.

Italy plans on acquiring 132 Leopard 2A8IT combat capable tanks and up to an additional 140 support vehicles as part of a two phase program, valued at an estimated cost of €8.2bn ($8.8bn) and set to run until 2037, according to translated Italian parliamentary documents. Rome has committed to a first phase between 2024 and 2026, covering development and pre-series production of the new vehicles, with the second phase, out to 2037, covering acquisition of production standard platforms.

The decision to invest in the new vehicles and gradually phase out C1 Ariete tanks, demonstrated Italy’s resolve to modernize its land forces amid Russia’s war in Ukraine, while appearing to turn the tide on years of financial uncertainty.

“Although the [Leopard 2A8] program concerns the acquisition of existing and identified means of German production, the board notes that its implementation would have a positive impact on Italian SMEs, creating … growth of technology and know-how and the achievement of greater competitiveness,” state the parliamentary documents.

Various reports previously indicated that Leonardo’s La Spezia facility would produce the Leopard tanks, but that appears to be in doubt, without a firm partnership with KNDS.

“With reference to the press release issued on 13 December 2023, Leonardo announces, despite the efforts undertaken, the interruption of the negotiations with KNDS to define a common configuration for the Main Battle Tank program of the Italian Army and to develop a broader cooperation,” said a Leonardo spokesperson.

“Leonardo confirms its commitment to provide the Italian Army with a performant, interoperable and up to date solution, satisfying the present requirements and remaining well positioned for future developments toward Main Ground Combat System, also through cooperation with other qualified international Partners.”

KNDS and Leonardo are also partners on a development program centered around delivery of a new gun pod for the M-346 Fighter Attack (FA) aircraft, first announced in June 2023.

KNDS said in April that the “main drivers” supporting an order intake for the 2023 financial year of €7.8bn ($8.3bn) were the “Leopard 2A8 programs, additional orders for infantry fighting vehicles, orders for artillery systems CAESAR and a growing need for ammunition of all calibers.”

The Leopard 2A8 includes integration of Rheinmetall’s 120 mm/L55 smoothbore gun, capable of firing several munitions, including sub-calibre armor piercing kinetic energy projectiles and programmable High Explosive projectiles.

The ammunition allows the tank to fight at longer range than older Leopard 2 platforms and enables strikes of IFV and second generation MBTs at up to 3,000 meters and third generation MBTs up to 2,000 meters, according to KNDS company literature [PDF].

The 2A8 also carries a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun and its turret can be fitted with a remote control weapons system. KNDS also notes that the day and night capabilities linked to the remote control station act as an additional “observation option” for increased situational awareness. Defensive capabilities are underpinned by integration of the Trophy Active Protection System.

Separately, Norway announced today that KNDS Deutschland and local supplier RITEK have signed an agreement for 37 of 54 Leopard 2A8 tanks on order to be manufactured at RITEK’s Levanger production site.

Milrem Robotics introduces Starlink-equipped combat support UGV.  Milrem Robotics, the world’s leading robotics and autonomous systems developer, and AEC Skyline, a supplier of advanced critical data solutions, have integrated Starlink satellite communications (SATCOM) together with associated equipment into the world-renowned THeMIS Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) that allows it to be controlled over vast distances. The latest communication system allows unmanned combat support vehicles to be safely deployed to the battlefield. At the same time, operators remain at a secure distance, even thousands of kilometres away, ensuring enhanced safety and efficiency in military operations. This new, advanced Beyond Line of Sight (BLOS) controlling capability will be unveiled during Eurosatory 2024, which will take place in Paris, France, from June 17 to 21. The communication system has been integrated into the THeMIS Cargo CASEVAC. This UGV is currently deployed in Ukraine, assisting Ukrainian soldiers in the war with Russia. Additionally, Ukrainian forces are using THeMIS’ configured for route clearance.

By leveraging satellite connectivity, the robotic vehicle can seamlessly transmit data, receive commands, and relay vital information in real-time, regardless of its location on the battlefield.

“This development marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of military robotics, offering unparalleled capabilities for remote operation and situational awareness. With satellite communications, operators can maintain control over the robot from a safe and strategic vantage point, minimising the risks associated with direct human involvement in combat zones,” explained Raul Rikk, Capability Development Director at Milrem Robotics.

11 Jun 24. Freedom needs Enablers: Rheinmetall presents numerous new systems, concepts and technologies for defending the freedom at Eurosatory 2024.

Rheinmetall will once again be one of the largest exhibitors at the Eurosatory in Paris in 2024, the most important defence industry trade fair on the European continent. From 17 to 21 June 2024, the German technology group will be presenting numerous new systems, products and concepts of all its divisions for the battlefield of the future based on the motto “Freedom needs Enablers”. There will also be numerous premieres:

Rheinmetall and Lockheed Martin will present the new GMARS rocket artillery system on 17 June 2024 at 11.00 a.m.

Also on 17 June 2024 at 4 p.m., a new demonstrator in the field of main battle tanks will be unveiled.

From 17 June 2024, Rheinmetall and its technology partner INERATEC will be presenting their Giga-PtX project vision for a war-ready fuel supply twice a day in the Demonstration Area. On the test track, the Caracal* airborne vehicle will demonstrate its high off-road capability using a synthetic fuel generated from hydrogen, CO2 and electricity. Media representatives will be able to view this demonstration in the Demonstration Area on 16 June 2024.

On 18 June 2024 at 11.00 a.m., Rheinmetall will present its Ermine (Hermelin) tactical small vehicles for the first time, which are characterised by new drive technologies and autonomous capabilities, and can be used both for tactical transport and as a mobile energy source.

Other key topics for Rheinmetall at Eurosatory 2024 include:

Air defence: Highly mobile, modular and scalable ground-based air defence systems are becoming increasingly important as NATO forces refocus on national and alliance defence. Rheinmetall is showcasing for the first time the Skyranger 35 turret on a Leopard 2 chassis as a tactical air defence system. In addition, a Lynx KF41 Skyranger 30 and the Boxer* Skyranger 30 wheeled air defence tank will be on display.

Network Enabled Warfare: As a leading systems integrator, Rheinmetall has all the necessary expertise to connect the various entities on the digitalised battlefield of the future. The Digitalized Brigade concept, including the Gladius 2.0 soldier system and the Tactical Core from our partner company blackned for interconnecting soldiers, platforms, sensors, effectors of combat units, and with new battle management and training applications will be showcased. This approach will be explained in a tangible way using a tank destroyer mission system concept.

Effect: For the first time, Rheinmetall is showing the modular, stabilised Natter weapon station family in action. The company is also showcasing its Remote Controlled Munition, a UGV-based infantry weapon system. Airborne precision loitering munitions (LM) increase the ability of even small units to conduct reconnaissance over the target area, and to engage targets at a distance and with precision. At the Eurosatory, Rheinmetall will be showcasing various Hero LM systems, which the company offers together with its partner UVision. The Dual Eimos 81mm mortar combat system, used by the Spanish Navy and Army, among others, will also be on the Rheinmetall stand.

Protection: Rheinmetall’s comprehensive expertise in protection technologies ranges from customised passive ballistic solutions to state-of-the-art active distance protection systems. At the Eurosatory 2024, Rheinmetall will be presenting its comprehensive approach concerning protection concepts. This includes the unveiling of ROSY Top Attack, the new version of the tried-and-tested rapid obscurant system for protection against airborne attacks. Rheinmetall is also presenting a complete solution for military ballistic body armour for the first time.

Obstacle warfare: Operational experience from the Ukraine shows that obstacle warfare has regained importance. Rheinmetall is presenting the Keiler Next Generation, an armoured breaching vehicle (ABV)for fast opening of barriers in combat. The Area Defence Weapon, which can be used to protect barriers from being cleared, will also be on display.

HX vehicle family: Rheinmetall’s HX vehicle family is characterised by outstanding mobility, versatility and a high, optionally available level of protection. This enables a flexible range of applications. Among the vehicles on display at the Eurosatory are an HX 8×8 with Automated Load Handling System (ALHS) and an HX 8×8 recovery vehicle.

Other innovations at the Eurosatory 2024 include the following:

 A new member of the Lynx KF41 combat vehicle family with 120mm turret;

 the Fuchs Evo with machine cannon turret;

 the Terrastorm, a MAN TGE van upgraded by RMMV and Torsus for military use,

 the Mission Master CXT, the latest member of Rheinmetalls Mission Master family of uncrewed Ground Systems (UGS);

 the Chiller HVAC system, a new thermal module for combat vehicles;

Rheinmetall will also be showcasing its extensive expertise in almost all capability categories at the Eurosatory 2024. These include weapon and ammunition systems for threat-adequate and scalable effects, innovative and interconnectable sensor technology and topics from the fields of automation and robotics. Exhibits such as the LUNA NG reconnaissance drone and other unmanned aerial systems, military lorries from the TG series and protected containers for mobile medical equipment or command posts round off Rheinmetall’s presence at this year’s Eurosatory.

Allison Transmission, a leading designer and manufacturer of conventional and electrified vehicle propulsion solutions for tactical wheeled and tracked defence vehicles, and medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles, will showcase eGen ForceTM, its electric hybrid propulsion system for armoured combat vehicles, at Eurosatory 2024 (June 17 – 21, Paris Villepinte, Hall 5A, Stand C281). Allison will also present its 3040 MXTM cross-drive transmission as well as the 9-Speed and 4000 SeriesTM fully automatic transmissions for defense ground vehicles.

eGen Force is the newest product in Allison’s extensive armoured vehicle portfolio, meeting requirements across a wide spectrum of applications, including the Infantry Fighting Vehicle and future Main Battle Tank markets. eGen Force extends beyond the capabilities of a traditional transmission by functioning as a power distribution system with an electric motor and inverter. This innovative technology provides power for the vehicle and allows for parallel hybrid operation. This enables engine-off mobility, which reduces the risk of enemy detection, including acoustic and thermal detection, key to soldier survivability.

The Allison eGen Force features fully integrated autonomous-enabling drive, steer and braking systems. The eGen Force benefits from Allison’s more than two decades of electric hybrid system experience as well as its tracked vehicle system knowledge refined over seven decades. The high-efficiency range pack utilizes eight forward and three reverse gears, providing an efficient 12:1 ratio coverage. The advanced propulsion solution features a 220-kilowatt electric motor and associated inverter for on-board vehicle power and parallel electric hybrid operation. Beyond power generation for auxiliary system capability development, the propulsion solution provides enhanced mobility performance and efficiency with a significant reduction in fuel consumption and reduced thermal and acoustic signatures.

Allison’s 3040 MXTM cross-drive transmission, designed for medium-tracked combat vehicles, provides the propulsion, steering and braking functionalities of the vehicles. Leveraging decades of product development experience, Allison has designed the 3040 MX to accommodate future controls platform evolutions, enabling advancements in system performance over the life cycle of the vehicle.

The Allison 9-Speed fully automatic transmission has been designed to match the most severe operating conditions and provides superior durability and driving performance for defence wheeled vehicles driving in demanding conditions. It has been developed based upon Allison’s proven 2000 Series™ automatic transmission featuring six speeds. With nine forward and three overdrive gears, the Allison 9-Speed transmission stands out not only for its reduced fuel consumption but also for its deeper first gear ratio, which improves gradeability and may eliminate the need for a two-speed transfer case in some applications due to its wider ratio coverage compared to the 2000 Series™. While the first and third gears empower more efficient performance at demanding duty cycles, the ninth gear provides greater fuel economy while maintaining performance. 10 Jun 24. Patria to showcase the FAMOUS concept vehicle at Eurosatory 2024. Patria attends the global defence and security exhibition Eurosatory in Paris on 17th-21st of June, 2024. At the event Patria will showcase the general layout of the concept vehicle based on the EDIDP FAMOUS concept results and EDF FAMOUS 2 cooperative development work. The aim of the FAMOUS programme is to improve the performance of new and existing armoured vehicles with the support of the EU funding. Led by Patria, the industrial consortium includes several European companies.

Additionally, Patria exhibits a wide range of its state-of-the-art offering, which is divided into three branches – Protected mobility and defence systems, Through life capability and Battlefield and critical systems.

Patria’s Protected mobility and defence systems

Patria AMV XP 8×8 is state of the art, modular and robust armoured wheeled vehicle providing superior fire power, protection and mobility. It provides modern protection capability and high mobility. Patria 6×6’s modular design allows a wide variety of specific configurations for diverse missions, such as Armoured Personnel Carrier, Company Command vehicle, Medical Evacuation vehicle, Heavy APC and 120 mm Patria Nemo mortar system.

With 6×6 Patria provides ultimate security of supply via technology transfer program, local manufacturing concept, and through-life support together with local partners.

Patria 6×6 vehicle is the selected the platform for the multinational CAVS programme currently joined by Finland, Latvia, Sweden and Germany. Patria 6×6 deliveries are ongoing to Latvia, Finland and Sweden, and vehicles are in operational use. Patria has already received orders for nearly 700 Patria 6×6 vehicles. The programme is open to European countries.

At Eurosatory Patria 6×6 is showcased with Patria Nemo 120mm turreted mortar system, SSZ Camouflage Technology Mobile Camouflage Kit, MedWear EVA 23S Tactical Evacuation Litter and Savox wireless intercom.

FAMOUS concept vehicle ​

Based on the EDIDP FAMOUS concept results and EDF FAMOUS 2 cooperative development work, Patria introduces tracked concept vehicle at Eurosatory. The new protected tracked vehicle system provides overwhelming tactical and operational mobility in the most demanding weather, soft soil and extreme harsh terrain conditions. This new tracked vehicle will be a breakthrough; a modern cost-effective alternative for traditionally articulated vehicles and light tracked vehicles.

Patria NEMO is a turreted, lightweight and remote-controlled 120 mm mortar system with a high level of mobility, protection and accuracy. Patria NEMO is capable of both direct and indirect fire, even when the platform is moving, and it can be integrated to various platforms; tracked or wheeled. There is also a container-based solution available. Patria NEMO can utilize its sensor system to acquire and engage targets independently or share the targets to other firing units. Patria NEMO: Impressive fire support and rapid response with high crew protection – all in one.

Through life capability offering

Patria OPTIME covers a broad range of services and solutions impacting the fleet availability, such as fleet maintenance, upcoming modification projects and needed integrations in the later stages of the lifecycle as well as supply chain management and training services. The new service concept for the sustainment of military equipment combines engineering expertise with efficient data utilization in a modular and tailored way and it is set up in phases together with the customer.

Battlefield and critical systems

Patria SONAC DTS is an ASW Sonar system offering both active and passive modes of operation with two separate wet-end sub-systems, VDS and TAS, which can be used simultaneously.

Patria CANDL provides a single data link solution for communications requiring high reliability, such as UAS payload data and C2. It enables air-to-air and air-to-ground Ad Hoc Networking as well as relaying for BLOS capability, thus enabling capabilities such as MUMT – Manned UnManned Teaming and LVC – Live Virtual Constructive training.

Patria ARIS is a remotely operable ELINT system for interception, recording and analysis of modern and increasingly complex signal environment. It provides an extensive set of high-performance tools for operator-driven ELINT signal analysis.

Patria ARIS-E is a remote operable ESM/ELINT system used for intercepting, recognising, geolocating and tracking radar emitters. The system produces a situational picture of the targets within the operating area. The Operator can also conduct a more detailed analysis of the received radar signals.

Patria MUSCL is a passive radar system providing resilient, covert and easily deployable air surveillance in standalone mode as well as in networked mode using multiple MUSCL stations. 06 Jun 24. First of Royal Netherlands Army’s CV90 IFVs completes MLU.

A total of 122 of 144 CV9035NL vehicle in service with the Royal Netherlands Army will complete the MLU, adding new lethality and protection capabilities.

The first of the upgraded CV90 infantry fighting vehicles (IFV) operated by the Royal Netherlands Army has formally completed its mid-life upgrade (MLU) process, with a total of 122 vehicles due to undergo the MLU programme that will see, among other system, the addition of an entirely new turret.

In a 5 May 2024 release, the Netherlands’ Ministry of Defence stated that the first of the upgraded CV90s rolled out of the Bunschoten-Spakenburg site on 4 May after completing the MLU, which will also see the integration of an anti-tank missile system and expanded defensive capabilities with the installation of an active protection system (APS).

The MLU is being carried out by BAE Systems Hägglunds and the Dutch company Van Halteren Technologies. Known as the CV9035NL in Netherlands service, additional upgrades as part of the MLU include improved IT infrastructure within the vehicle, rubber tracks, and improved cooling.

In January 2021, BAE Systems signed an MLU contract with the Dutch Defence Materiel Organization (DMO) for the Royal Netherlands Army’s fleet of 122 CV90s, to ensure the CV9035NL remains in service through 2039, a 2022 BAE Systems release stated. The $500m (€460m) contract included an option for 19 additional vehicles, ensuring service through 2039.

The newly designed turret has shifted the position of the 35mm Bushmaster main gun for improved vehicle balance, crew ergonomics, and the creation of new future weaponry options, according to BAE Systems Hägglunds, the OEM of the CV90 IFV.

The Netherlands’ MoD stated that the intention is to complete the MLU upgrade for the 122 CV9035NL IFVs in early 2027. This timeframe represents a slight slip from the earlier schedule that would see the MLU competed in 2026.

CV9035NL: what’s in the MLU?

The APS capability installed is Elbit Systems’ Iron Fist, which provides radar and optical detection of incoming threats, with the inbuilt hard-kill system neutralizing inbound shells and missiles.

Additional anti-tank capability will be achieved through the Spike LR2 missile launcher, which can be operated in a range of modes, including Non-Line-Of-Sight (NLOS) targeting.

The new electro-optical panoramic sight sits in a retractable mast, which has also integrated new thermal imaging cameras and 360-degree IR/day cameras to improve situational awareness.

According to GlobalData’s Netherlands Defense Market 2023-2028 report, the Netherlands Army has 144 CV9035NL infantry fighting vehicles in its fleet, acquired from BAE Systems AB between 2004 and 2009.
