22 May 24. Indra introduces new vehicle situational awareness system. Indra has developed a new armoured vehicle situational awareness system designed to improve threat detection and evaluation.

Incorporating artificial intelligence (AI), the system analyses images from visible, night-vision, and infrared cameras fitted on the vehicle, improving the range and identification of individuals and platforms as well as reducing the cognitive burden, an announcement from the company detailed on 20 May.

The system also supports friend-or-foe identification and threat-level assessment and can suggest potential countermeasures and courses of action, the company added.

Although its name remains undecided, a company spokesperson informed Janes that it is ready for export and is being installed in the Spanish Army’s Tracked Support Vehicle (Vehículo de Apoyo de Cadenas: VAC).

VAC aims to replace around 2,000 vehicles from the M113 tracked armoured personnel carrier (APC) family that are in service with the Spanish Army. Manufacturing is expected to start this year. The vehicles are utilising the same mission systems as the Spanish Army’s 8×8 Wheeled Combat Vehicle (Vehículo de Combate sobre Ruedas: VCR) Dragón. (Source: Janes)

22 May 24. Rheinmetall Automecanica SRL: Kick-off for strategic presence on NATO’s eastern flank in Romania. During a Welcome Day at the Mediaș site, the new Romanian vehicle manufacturer Rheinmetall Automecanica SRL presented itself to the workforce and representatives from politics, business, the armed forces and the media. The Romanian Minister of Economy, Entrepreneurship and Tourism, Stefan-Radu Oprea, also took part in the event.

Rheinmetall, a leading manufacturer of military vehicles in Europe, recently completed the investment announced in February 2024 as the majority shareholder in two companies of the Romanian vehicle manufacturer Automecanica Mediaș. The acquisition became effective on 1 May 2024 once the relevant official approvals had been obtained. The new company, of which the Duesseldorf-based group now holds 72.5% of the shares via Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH, will now operate under the name Rheinmetall Automecanica SRL.

With Rheinmetall Automecanica SRL, Rheinmetall is furthermore expanding its global vehicle production network, which already has locations in Canada, the USA, Australia, the UK, Austria, the Netherlands, the Ukraine and Germany. This will also significantly increase the production and maintenance capacities. Rheinmetall is hence continuing to strengthen its strategic presence in Central Europe and is tapping into considerable sales growth and new, promising customer countries in the region. Rheinmetall is now also present in Hungary and Lithuania with locations in the eastern NATO alliance area.

The Mediaș site, centrally located in the Romanian region of Transylvania, guarantees the armed forces on NATO’s eastern flank shorter response times and larger security in the supply chain. In addition to the repair of logistical vehicles, undercarriages for the Romanian armed forces’ anti-aircraft weapons shall also be serviced here in future.

At the same time, Rheinmetall is expanding its product portfolio in military vehicle construction with this step. Truck bodies, trailers and other special vehicles developed and produced by Automecanica complete the range of logistical trucks with which Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles (RMMV) is successful in global markets.

Automecanica Mediaș has already been an efficient partner of the Romanian armed forces. Rheinmetall’s cooperation with Automecanica was established in 2022, when both partners agreed to operate a maintenance centre for military vehicles in Satu Mare.

 

23 May 24. Milrem Robotics, the world’s leading robotics and autonomous systems developer, has expanded its production capability fivefold by opening a new facility that allows the company to satisfy the growing need for intelligent robotics solutions by end-users.

The new facility next to Milrem Robotics’ headquarters in Tallinn, Estonia, allows the company to manufacture 500 units of its operationally proven, multi-mission THeMIS Unmanned Ground Vehicle yearly.

The THeMIS is already part of robotics programs in 18 different countries internationally, eight of which are members of NATO, including Estonia, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, the UK, and the US. THeMIS UGVs are also assisting Ukrainian soldiers in the war with Russia.

“Many end-users, satisfied with the results of testing the robotic vehicles, are preparing to launch high-quantity procurements. With the opening of our new facility, we are better prepared to answer these calls,” explained Kuldar Väärsi, CEO of Milrem Robotics. “Also, the growing use of UGVs in Ukraine shows a clear focus and importance of unmanned ground systems,” he added.

In addition to production, Milrem Robotics will also expand its prototyping facilities to speed up the development of new products in the company’s growing portfolio. An extra 1000 square meters of office space has also been added.

“Unlike other technology companies who announced layoffs during 2023, Milrem Robotics is continuing to grow this year and hiring 100 new employees, mostly in Europe,” Väärsi added.

Additionally, the expansion is estimated to indirectly generate further positions with high-technology partners and suppliers, contributing to developing the local talent pool and economy.

“The expansion of the Estonian defence industry is beneficial from both a security and economic perspective,” said Kusti Salm, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Defence of Estonia.

“For many years, Estonia’s defence industry policy has aimed to develop a high-tech defence industry that can be competitive in export markets. Milrem Robotics is a good example of how a defence industry start-up has grown in 10 years into a large and innovative industrial company, in Estonian terms, with a wide international customer base that can include a wide range of Estonian subcontractors, engineers and specialists in its network. The creation of such companies – and others that have been established in recent years – is a sign of the maturity of the Estonian defence industry and the potential to contribute more to national defence and economic development,” Salm said.

Milrem Robotics is the world’s leading robotics and autonomous systems developer and systems integrator, with offices in Estonia, Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands, and the US. The company is known for its THeMIS and Multiscope UGVs, the Type-X Robotic Combat Vehicle, and MIFIK.

The company is also renowned for successfully completing the European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP) project iMUGS, which focused on developing a modular and scalable architecture for hybrid manned-unmanned systems.

 

22 May 24. Marshall has secured a contract valued at over £100m to design and produce an extensive suite of command and control (C2) shelters, modular workspaces and ancillary equipment for the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV).

Having formally joined NATO in March, Sweden is embarking on a rapid digital defence modernisation programme to support integration with alliance partners and enhance the overall readiness of its full-time and reserve forces. In addition to delivering a critical upgrade to core C2 capabilities, Marshall’s highly manoeuvrable and rapidly deployable systems will transform the operational resilience and survivability of the Swedish Armed Forces’ critical infrastructure in open, littoral and urban operations. Over the next four years, with the option to extend a further three thereafter, Marshall will deliver up to 500 shelters as well a range of ancillary equipment including power units, battery boxes and mast trailers.

Production will be shared across facilities in the UK and Canada, demonstrating the efficiency and capacity benefits made possible by Marshall’s growing operational footprint around the world.

To provide the full spectrum of C2 capabilities and support for personnel, Marshall will adapt its standardised base 20ft container range into a total of 16 shelter variants, each of which will feature a unique combination of equipment, modules and specifications for dedicated roles such as command, communications, mast operation, technical support and network support. Electromagnetic shielding will be standard across the C2 suite, most variants will feature HVAC and CBRN filtration systems and one variant includes ballistic protection.

In addition to the production and delivery of shelters and ancillaries, the contract awarded to Marshall also includes parts supply and ongoing technical and maintenance support for up to 10 years.

“Delivering and supporting a full range of C2 capabilities on this scale plays perfectly to Marshall’s engineering strengths, global production capabilities, and pedigree of working with NATO partners,” said Bob Baxter, Marshall’s Chief Growth Officer.

21 May 24. BAE Systems has signed a contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for new CV9035 MkIIIC vehicles, as well as associated integrated logistic support. This new contract will provide new-build CV90s to help replenish the Swedish Army’s fleet. These new CV9035 MkIIICs will replace CV9040 vehicles donated to Ukraine by the Swedish government. In addition, the Swedish government is procuring more new-build CV90 vehicles to expand Ukraine capabilities. The contract will provide the opportunity for other nations to join in the procurement of CV90MkIIICs.  The new CV9035 MkIIIC is built to the same standard as the newest CV90 mid-life upgrade program for the Netherlands. The vehicles will be equipped with a new turret which provides a leap forward in design and functionality. It also offers significant ergonomic improvements to benefit the vehicle’s crew. The vehicle is built on years of combat-proven experience, continuous improvements, and data gathering from the CV90 User Club, which comprises the nations operating CV90 fleets.

“These new CV9035 MkIIICs will extend the capabilities of both the Swedish and Ukrainian armies and provide crews improved combat awareness, increased mobility, protection, and lethality,” said Tommy Gustafsson-Rask, managing director of BAE Systems Hägglunds, which designs and produces the CV90.

BAE Systems’ CV90 infantry fighting vehicle provides world-leading combat capability in the 20-38 ton class. It can integrate a wide range of weapon systems, providing all-target capability to land forces around the world. With a total of 1,700 vehicles ordered in 17 different variants, the CV90 has covered more than eight m kilometres. It has been selected by 10 European nations, eight of them NATO-members, and has seen combat in Afghanistan and Ukraine, as well as operations in Liberia.

 

21 May 24. Monitor Lizard vehicle undergoes PLA trials. The Monitor Lizard all-terrain vehicle (ATV) developed by Chinese company Sichuan Jinjia Special Equipment Technology (SJSET) is undergoing trials with the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), a company representative of SJSET told Janes in early May.

The company developed tracked Monitor Lizard – which weighs 17 tons – to meet the PLA’s requirements for a lightweight ATV that the service intends to deploy in high-altitude and cold mountainous regions, the representative added.

According to company specifications, Monitor Lizard is an armoured dual-body vehicle and its rear body can be fitted with various types of modules. The vehicle can be used as an armoured personnel carrier (APC), command-and-control vehicle, logistics vehicle, or rescue vehicle.

Monitor Lizard has a payload capacity of 8 tons. The ATV can attain a maximum speed of up to 50 km/h in high-altitude areas with a floating speed of 5 km/h. (Source: Janes)

 

20 May 24. Textron Systems Collaborates with Kodiak to Develop Uncrewed Military Vehicle.

  • The companies are collaborating on the development of an uncrewed military vehicle intended for advanced terrain environments and designed without space for a driver

Textron Systems Corporation, a Textron Inc. (NYSE:TXT) company, a leading developer of crewed and uncrewed military ground vehicles, and Kodiak Robotics, Inc., a leading self-driving technology developer for the trucking and defense markets, announced today that they are collaborating to develop an autonomous military ground vehicle specifically designed for driverless operations. Through this collaboration, Kodiak will integrate its industry-leading autonomous system, the Kodiak Driver, into a Textron Systems prototype, purpose-built uncrewed military vehicle. This collaboration also marks Kodiak’s first integration of its autonomous technology into a vehicle designed without space for a human driver.

Textron Systems has extensive experience in developing air, land and sea vehicles. The collaboration between the company, a leader in military ground vehicles, and Kodiak, a dual-use autonomous driving company for military and commercial applications, represents a unique model for bringing cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) powered, autonomous technologies to military customers. It also demonstrates the readiness of the Kodiak Driver for driverless operations as well as its adaptability to a diverse range of vehicle types, both on- and off-road.

The system being developed by the companies will operate using the same core technology that’s embedded within Kodiak’s autonomous long-haul trucks, which have been validated across nearly 3 m miles of real-world operations. The vehicle will also feature Kodiak DefensePods, an adapted version of Kodiak’s modular, swappable SensorPods, designed for military use. DefensePods are pre-calibrated, pre-built hardware enclosures that include the sensors necessary for autonomous driving. A technician without specialized training can swap out a DefensePod in the field in 10 minutes or less.

“Textron Systems has designed, developed and manufactured military ground vehicle systems for decades. Joining forces with Kodiak allows us to bring cutting-edge autonomous technology to our industry-leading uncrewed military ground vehicle systems, progressing the functionality, adaptability, reliability and ruggedness of our technologies,” said Textron Systems’ David Phillips, Senior Vice President, Land and Sea Systems. “Integrating our vehicle with Kodiak’s AI-powered autonomy software and pioneering modular DefensePods represents a major step forward in delivering a mission-ready autonomous system.”

The companies intend to integrate Kodiak’s technology into the Textron Systems uncrewed military vehicle and demonstrate driverless operations later in 2024. Afterwards, Textron Systems and Kodiak intend to jointly explore future opportunities with both the U.S. DoD and the militaries of other allied nations, as they look to accelerate automation into military ground vehicles. Deploying uncrewed vehicles to perform high-risk and complex tasks in the field will assist the U.S. military in removing servicemen and women from harm’s way, while enhancing national security.

20 May 24. Informed of Challenger 3, Oman has decision to make with its Challenger 2 tanks. It is unknown whether Oman would seek to acquire the remaining 50-60 Challenger 2s from the UK after the upgrade of 148 platforms to Challenger 3 is completed.

As one of only two export operators of the Challenger 2 main battle tank (MBT), the Sultanate of Oman has a decision to make regarding a potential replacement or modernisation programme, effectively choosing to either follow the UK into the Challenger 3 cycle or acquire a completely new platform.

Oman acquired 38 Challenger 2 MBTs from Alvis Vickers, now BAE Systems Land Systems, between 1996-2001, along with four Challenger recovery vehicles in 1996, with the vehicles operating in a single armoured brigade.

The Sultanate will be aware and informed of the UK’s progress with the Challenger 3 programme, which recently revealed that the first prototype had undertaken firing trials at locations in Germany.

It is unknown whether Oman would seek to acquire the remaining 50-60 Challenger 2s from the UK after the upgrade of 148 platforms to Challenger 3 is completed.

The UK will therefore operate a split fleet of Challenger 2 and Challenger 3 MBTs until the latter platform reaches full operating capability in November 2030, after which the British Army’s remaining Challenger 2s will be placed into storage.

The UK’s £800m ($1bn) upgrade to Challenger 3 entails the incorporation of new armour and an active protection system, a new turret, and Rheinmetall’s 155mm L55A1 smoothbore gun, in addition to separate gunner and commander IR optics.

Broken down, this equates to a £5.4m spend per Challenger 2 being upgraded to the Challenger 3 variant for the British Army.

What might Oman do with Challenger 2?

Recently released figures from GlobalData’s Oman Defense Market report indicates that spending on MBTs would rise from $38m (£30m) in 2024 to $85m by 2034, a relatively significant decade-long increase. Using the data available for the UK programme, it would cost Oman around £205m (OR100.4m) to upgrade its Challenger 2 fleet to the Challenger 3 variant.

Given this, the expenditure forecast points towards maintaining existing platforms for another decade, after which time a decision will be required to upgrade or seek a replacement.

With European countries donating much of their secondary MBT stock – such as various variants of the Leopard 2 platform – to Ukraine, the availability of platforms from that market is limited to new builds, which would require a significant lead time before delivery.

Not yet in service with the British Army, the Challenger 3 could nevertheless participate in future exercises in Oman, as has been the case with the UK’s Challenger 2s. Seeing the Challenger 3 first-hand could provide an opportunity to determine how best to secure the next-generation MBT capability for the Sultanate, which maintains a relatively modern land capability.

20 May 24. GM Defense and Mistral Inc. Announce Strategic Collaboration to Enhance Tactical Capability. GM Defense, a subsidiary of General Motors, and Mistral Inc., a provider of high-performance, reliable and innovative solutions to U.S. defense and federal agencies, announced the integration of the innovative UVision and Mistral’s Hero-120 loitering munition with GM Defense’s light tactical utility vehicle. Combining GM Defense’s expertise in military mobility with Mistral and UVision’s loitering munition technology enables the companies to support the tactical needs of a modernized force.

The GM Defense utility concept vehicle is based on the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2. The utility vehicle features a high percentage of commercial off the shelf parts, including Chevrolet Performance components to enhance off-road capabilities, and offers different seating configurations to meet customer requirements. The utility solution is designed with a cargo bed in the rear of the vehicle, ideal for housing Mistral’s and UVision’s Hero-120 solution, or to support command and control, electronic warfare, counter-unmanned aircraft systems, reconnaissance and logistics.

The Hero-120 is designed for engaging enemy combatants without exposing Soldiers to direct enemy fire. This loitering munition system is versatile in targeting, capable of engaging a variety of targets, including armored vehicles, enemy troops, field fortifications and urban structures. Its precision strike capability is specifically designed to maximize effectiveness while minimizing collateral damage.

15 May 24. Alcon Components Ltd, the highly acclaimed UK-based brake and clutch company, has announced a ‘refresh’ of their best-selling armoured vehicle brake kits, to take account of recent customer demands. Alcon’s brake kits are used across the globe by armouring companies to improve performance and safety when the significant weight of armour is added to a vehicle. This ‘refresh’ covers some of the most popular vehicle kits, the Toyota LC300 and the Nissan Patrol.

Toyota LC-300 brake kit: Due to the unprecedented demand for the Toyota LC300 front-only kit, Alcon has introduced a single piece disc to replace the current two-piece disc, which is more in keeping with the demands of the market. Fitting the refreshed brake kit with the new disc will increase available brake torque, reduce brake fade and fluid vaporisation, extend brake service intervals and reduce through-life costs. The LC300 kit now gives an increase of up to 36% in disc thermal capacity, a reduction of up to 36% in front pad work rate and an increase of up to 9% in available front brake torque, over standard. Moving to a one-piece disc removes the requirement for manual disc assembly and gives a more robust product. Alcon repeated their full dynamometer test schedule to validate the disc, exceeding requirements on the disc strength, disc cracking and disc coning tests. The friction performance test indicated that the slight variation in grade of disc material has increased the friction coefficient between pad and disc.

Nissan Patrol Brake kit: Due to the recent resurgence of the Nissan Patrol in the armoured vehicle market, Alcon have refreshed and re-introduced the Nissan Patrol brake kit. The Alcon Nissan Patrol kit includes a caliper from the well proven CIR15 family used on many other armoured and defence applications. Like the refreshed LC300 kit, it also includes a one-piece disc. The Alcon Nissan Patrol kit now gives an increase of up to 15% reduction in disc temperature rise, up to 35% reduction in front and rear pad work rates and up to 7% increase in available brake torque, over standard.

Alcon’s refreshed armoured vehicle brake kits sit alongside a wide range of other kits that deliver improvements in performance and safety and reduce through life costs. 17 May 24. ARQUUS wins the contract for the French DGA’s new generation of tankers.

First batch of 70 trucks signed!

On April 28th, 2024, the French Procurement Agency (DGA) officially awarded Arquus for a contract to develop and produce the new generation of tankers (CCNG*) to renew its current fleet. This contract confirms Arquus as a major player in the design and production of the French Army’s armored logistical vehicles. The first batch of 70 vehicles is scheduled for delivery started in 2026, as part of a broader program aiming to provide 376 new generation tanker by 2030, in accordance with the current military programming law (2024-2030).

These new tankers are intended for the armed forces: the Army, the Air and Space Force, as well as the Operational Energy Service. They are designed to meet specific requirements, notably robustness and versatility, requested by their missions. A major element in the logistical chain of the armed forces, they ensure fuel supply in challenging and sometimes exposed conditions, contributing to the success of operations. Three versions have been requested to adapt to different missions:

  • A 20m³ tanker with an armored cabin, known as the “mass transport” CCNG
  • A 12m³ tanker with an armored cabin, known as the versatile “protection device” CCNG
  • A 12m³ tanker with a soft cabin, known as the versatile “unprotected” CCNG

The new generation tankers are based on an 8×8 off-road chassis from the Renault Trucks civilian range.

With its experience in the field and its collaboration with Magyar, a company that designs and manufactures tankers, and Desautel, a specialist in fire protection that brings expertise in distribution groups, Arquus confirms its leadership in the logistical component of the French Army.

Arquus designs and manufactures the armored cabins at its center of excellence in Garchizy (France). The complete assembly of these new generation tankers will be carried out at its new vehicle production center of excellence in Limoges. This new contract will lead to the opening of a new assembly line. Arquus has also been mandated to develop and provide the support system, including tools, spare parts, documentation, and training for these new vehicles. Support services and technical management of the vehicle fleet are also provided by Arquus.
