23 Feb 24. US Army proving out snowmobiles for resupply, manoeuvre. Soldiers supported brigades from the backs of snowmobiles for the US Army’s first large-scale exercise with a significant number of machines, service officials told Janes during the Joint Pacific Multinational Readiness Center (JPMRC) 24-02 training rotation held from 12 to 22 February at Fort Greely, Alaska. The exercise utilised more than 100 Polaris snow machines for resupply and medical evacuation, and to transport soldiers, Major General Brian Eifler told Janes on 21 February. Arctic leaders are still facingquestions about sustainment for such a large force of machines and what kind of machines should stock the army’s fleet, he said. The 11th Airborne Division purchased 160 snowmachines to put two with each company, modelled after Canada’s Arctic operations, Maj Gen Eifler told Janes in October 2023. Canada and Mongolia participated in the JPMRC rotation, but Canada had the largest presence in the exercise. (Source: Janes)

 

23 Feb 24. US Army builds out new cold weather vehicle for command-and-control. The first – almost fully decked out – command-and-control (C2) variants of the Cold Weather All-Terrain Vehicle (CATV), complete with shifted seating arrangements and integrated communications equipment, have been used in the first large scale exercise, a US Army brigade combat team commander told Janes. The new CATVs were first put through their paces at Operation ‘Wolf Valkyrie’, a brigade field training exercise in December 2023 that laid the groundwork for their participation in the Joint Pacific Multinational Readiness Center (JPMRC) 24-02 training rotation at Fort Greely, Alaska.

“It was just our way of training ourselves and some of our mission-essential tasks to set us up for this validation,” Colonel Sean Lucas, commander of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, told Janes in an interview during JPMRC 24-02, which took place from 12 to 22 February. (Source: Janes)

 

22 Feb 24. Greece plans Leopard 1A5 upgrade. The Hellenic Army has received industry proposals for upgrading its Leopard 1A5 main battle tanks (MBTs). An EODH spokesperson confirmed to Janes that the company is among those that have presented upgrade proposals to the Greek Army Staff. The spokesperson said EODH is working with KNDS’ Krauss Maffei-Wegmann (KMW) and Spanish defence company Duma and offers a complete solution with a price and time schedule for building a prototype and acceptance testing.

EODH is proposing to remove the Leopard 1A5’s Blohm & Voss armour, as well as obsolete subsystems and wiring. It does not foresee replacing the tank’s 105 mm gun but rather giving it the possibility of firing guided anti-tank missiles and loitering munitions from its main armament, with the option of installing an anti-tank missile launcher. 21 Feb 24. India’s Arjun Mk 1A programme faces delay.

The deliveries of Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO’s) Arjun Mk 1A main battle tanks (MBTs) to the Indian Army will experience a delay because of an engine shortage, a DRDO official told Janes on 20 February.

The Indian Army ordered 118 Arjun Mk 1A MBTs worth INR75.23 bn (USD907 m) in September 2021, with deliveries of the initial batch scheduled for 2024 and the final batch in 2027.

However, because of a delay in the delivery of engines from German company MTU, the delivery of tanks to the Indian Army will be delayed as well, the DRDO official said.

The tanks were planned to be produced with German MTU MB 838 Ka-501 V10 liquid-cooled turbocharged diesel engines, but MTU requires at least four more years to initiate the production of the engines for Arjun tanks, the official added.

MTU had not responded to Janes request for comment regarding the reason for the delay in engine delivery at the time of publication. (Source: Janes)

 

21 Feb 24. ST Engineering unveils wheeled ground robot equipped with aerial drone. Among a wide array of aerial weapons on display at the Singapore Airshow, attendees can see an outlier at ST Engineering’s colossal stand: an unmanned ground vehicle equipped with a multirotor drone.

The Taurus is the local technology company’s latest remote-operated product, shown for the first time publicly.

The firm completed development of the four-wheel drive electric vehicle last year, but does not have a launch customer, hence its unveiling at the air show this week, a company representative told Defense News on the condition of anonymity.

ST Engineering says the robot can be used for surveillance, casualty evacuation, logistics transport and material handling. The representative said the surveillance configuration has attracted the most interest. For material handling, the firm would fit the vehicle with a robotic arm.

The version at the show featured the company’s DrN-15 multirotor drone, which can fly beyond the operator’s visual line of sight. The drone received approval for flight by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore.

When operating in fully electric mode, it can reach distances of about 19 miles and has a base weight of approximately 3,527 pounds.

The representative said the Taurus is useful for manned-unmanned teaming, such as operating alongside the firm’s own eight-wheel drive Terrex s5 infantry fighting vehicle, also launched at the show.

ST Engineering recently doubled down on efforts to present Singapore-made and -designed autonomous ground vehicles, including the Hunter tracked platform, developed as a private venture by the company. (Source: C4ISR & Networks)

 

21 Feb 24. Poland inaugurates its new regional Abrams facility.

The Poznan-based ‘competence centre’ will support the forthcoming Polish Abrams main battle tanks as well as US fleets in the region.

Poland has announced the inauguration of its new ‘Regional Competency Centre’ for the Abrams family of main battle tanks (MBT) in Poznań, western Poland.

The facility will serve as a regional hub to maintain and sustain the platform for Abrams users in central and eatsern Europe.

It is ideally situated in a country that will soon induct the MBT and is relatively close to the war in Ukraine – in January 2023, the US government announced the supply of 31 M1A2 Abrams tanks vehicles to Ukraine.

Notably, the US Army’s ‘V-Corps’ is located in Poznań. This military unit serves as a tactical headquarters that commands all US forces on the Nato’s eastern flank. The unit is currently headed by the Polish Major General, Maciej Jablonski.

Poland’s armament group, PGZ, had originally signed an agreement with the US Abrams manufacturer, General Dynamics Land Systems, to establish this new Competency Centre at the end of June last year.

Background to the Competency Centre

According to the leading intelligence consultancy, GlobalData, the Polish Army currently operates a range of different MBTs: the new South Korean K2 Panther, the older K9A1, the German Leopard 2A4, Poland’s ageing PT-91, among others.

In April last year, the Polish Government revealed that the US confirmed that the first 14 modern M1 Abrams tanks will be delivered to the Army in June 2023 – this is part of the 366 units ordered. Poland acquired the M1A1 version for its 18th Mechanised Division, as well as the M1A2 SEPv3 tanks already contracted in April 2022.

The new Competency facility was largely established in response to this order for the tank.

However, alongside Poland, other regional customers have requested the MBT too including Romania, which ordered 54 M1A2 SEPv3 units in November 2023.

Plans to evolve the Abrams tank

The Abrams tank can no longer grow its capabilities without adding weight, and we need to reduce its logistical footprint,” explained Major General Glenn Dean, program executive officer for ground combat systems.

Therefore, the US Army plans to substantially reduce its weight and thus its sustainment through an open system architecture.

Simultaneously, the enduring SEPv3 variant will continue to play a part in the force structure as the most sustainable version of the Abrams tank.

“The army must be provided with support in terms of service, operation and maintenance of each type of equipment it has in its inventory,” said the vice-president of the management board of PGZ, Krzysztof Sola.

“I would like to thank the representatives of General Dynamics Land Systems, as well as the management board of Wojskowe Zakłady Motoryzacyjne and the employees of Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa for the fact that together we managed to implement this project in such a short time,” Sola emphasised. 21 Feb 24. Italy purchases German Leopard 2 tanks. 132 vehicles and 140 platforms for 8 bn and 246 m euros. Italy has given the green light to purchase Leopard 2 tanks produced by the German company Krauss-Maffei. The favorable vote took place at the Defense commission of the Chamber of Deputies yesterday. The acquisition program will have a total duration of 14 years and will take place in two phases: the first is the preparatory one (2024-2026), while the second (2027-2037) concerns the actual acquisition of 132 tanks and up to 140 armored platforms. The overall cost is estimated at 8 bn and 246 m euros.

“In fact, it will allow the start of a vast multi-year program for the renewal of the armored component of the army, which became necessary due to the obsolescence which the systems currently online are facing and the new NATO requirements, conditioned by recent developments on the international scene”, explains the president of the Italian Defense commission of the Chamber of Deputies, Nino Minardo.

“The acquisition of existing vehicles of German production -he concludes- is clearly the fastest solution that meets our needs. However, the positive impact that the operation could have on small and medium-sized Italian businesses, creating an oriented towards technological and skills growth which would also allow a delocalisation of the production of some parts and subsystems and would fuel the demand for the supply of manpower”. 21 Feb 24. Czechs in talks to secure up to 30 more Leopard 2A4 tanks from Germany. The Czech Republic is in talks with Germany to get 15 Leopard 2A4 tanks as a gift compensating Czech military support for Ukraine and to possibly buy 15 more from the German defence industry, the Czech Defence Ministry said on Wednesday.

The Czechs had received 15 Leopard 2A4 tanks from Germany as a previous donation, and also plan to order dozens of the most modern 2A8 versions to be delivered in the coming years.

The ministry said the additional 15 tanks that would be bought would cost in the low hundreds of ms of euros, and would help improve the country’s capabilities amid a switch from Soviet-era equipment that it has largely donated to Ukraine.

“If the current negotiations are successfully concluded, the Czech Republic will have 42 Leopard 2A4 main battle tanks and the recovery tanks on the same chassis,” the ministry said in a statement.

“After 2030, the Czech Army may have over 100 Leopard tanks of two types in active service and reserve,” it added.

Leopard tanks are made jointly by Germany’s Rheinmetall (RHMG.DE), opens new tab and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann.

The Czech government has been in talks to buy around 70 Leopard 2A8 tanks in a joint purchase from industry with the German government.

Apart from the already-donated 15 Leopard 2A4s, the Czech army still uses 30 modernised Soviet-era T-72M4CZ tanks and some unmodernised T-72s, but most of those have been donated to Ukraine.

The Czech Republic was the first country to send heavy equipment to Ukraine in 2022 and has so far provided 62 T-72 tanks, as well as 131 infantry fighting vehicles, 16 air defence systems and six helicopters from army reserves, Prime Minister Petr Fiala was quoted as saying on Wednesday by news agency CTK. 21 Feb 24. Saab UK has announced a new partnership with Abbey Group to manufacture parts of Barracuda Mobile Camouflage System (MCS) for the first time in the UK. Saab’s Barracuda MCS is a camouflage solution developed to increase the survivability and force protection of armed forces around the world. This is done by minimising the signature to hostile sensors of the camouflaged vehicles including tanks, armoured personnel carriers and trucks. Barracuda MCS units produced with Abbey Group, will be used on the British Army’s Ajax armoured fighting vehicles.

The partnership aims to combine Saab UK’s cutting-edge technology with Abbey Group’s expertise in engineering. This collaboration marks a significant UK milestone for both companies and is set to contribute to the growth of British manufacturing, and global production of Barracuda systems.

Saab UK hosted Maria Eagle, Labour’s Shadow Defence Procurement Minister, on 16th February. Ms Eagle said:

“The partnership between Saab UK and Abbey Group is a testament to the strength of British manufacturing. This collaboration brings together the best of Swedish and British capabilities, and supports economic growth. I applaud these companies for their vision and commitment to technological progress in the UK.”

Abbey Group will be responsible for sewing the MCS units together using camouflage material produced in Sweden.

Alex Alderson, Director of Land Systems for Saab UK said:

“We’re delighted to have Abbey Group as an important part of our UK team. They will have a key role in manufacturing crucial parts of the Barracuda products sold to the UK market, including MCS for Ajax vehicles. It is important to have a UK-based production partner both for us and our MOD customers.”

In its commitment to sharing knowledge and technology with its partners, Saab UK has invited staff from Abbey Group to travel to Barracuda’s production facility in Sweden, for training.

Adam Kelly, Managing Director for Abbey Group said:

“Our collaboration with Saab UK represents a significant opportunity for our growth, for Liverpool, and broadening our offer to customers.”

Abbey Group’s Barracuda production facility is housed in a part of former ROF Kirkby – Royal Ordnance Filling Factory No.7, a site where some of the Canary Girls, British women employed in munitions production in WW2, were once stationed.

The partnership with Abbey Group follows Saab’s similar production deal with Tulmar in 2022 to produce MCS units near Ontario, Canada.

 

20 Feb 24. First pre-production model of Army’s new Challenger 3 tank deploys to Germany for trials. The Army’s first pre-production Challenger 3 main battle tank has been sent to Germany to be put through its paces after rolling off the production line in Telford.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the Ministry of Defence’s Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) announced that the Challenger 3 tank had been sent for final trials before production.

“The prototype will be put through its paces under operational conditions to ensure it meets British Army standards before production of final vehicles,” the post explained.

The post was accompanied by two photos appearing to show the tank being driven on a steep gradient and approaching a water obstacle.

The Challenger 3, is set to be the new Main Battle Tank for the future. Along with Ajax and Boxer, it will be “at the heart of the Army’s warfighting capability in the Heavy Brigade Combat Teams”, said the Army.

After this round of trials, it is expected that 140 tanks will be built and delivered to the British Army.

The Challenger 3 will be fitted with a new 120mm L55A1 smoothbore gun built by Rheinmetall, enabling the use of the most advanced ammunition available and commonality with many of Britain’s Nato allies.

What do we know about Challenger 3 so far?

  • The British Army will get a 140-strong fleet of Challenger 3 tanks.
  • The tanks are expected to reach initial operating capability by 2027.
  • The MOD then aims for the tanks to be fully operational by 2030.
  • It weighs 66 tonnes
  • It is a joint venture between UK-based BAE Systems and Germany-based Rheinmetall.

What new technology will the Challenger 3 tank feature?

  • The new tank will be fully digitised
  • It will be a 24-hour, all-weather tank
  • It will have a top speed of 60mph
  • Its main gun will fire high-velocity ammunition capable of travelling at faster speeds and have an increased range

20 Feb 24. Singapore Airshow 2024: China develops VTOL electric cargo UAV. China is developing a new vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for short-range cargo transport tasks.

A representative of the Aerospace Times Feipeng Company Limited said the UAV, called the FP-981C, is being developed to transport cargo and supplies in “complex environments”.

“The developmental programme of the FP-981C started in 2022, and the UAV is currently involved in flight-testing,” the company representative told Janes at the Singapore Airshow 2024, where an engine-less, one-to-one scale model of the UAV was displayed. The Singapore Airshow is being held from 20 to 25 February.

The UAV features a twin-boom design with a unified tail aileron, plus port and starboard underwing fairings on its fixed-wing cantilever wing with engine. Each fairing is fitted with fore and aft electric lift engines driving two-bladed propellers. A two-bladed pusher propeller is also fitted in the rear fuselage to improve forward speed, Janes assesses.

20 Feb 24. Austria boosts defence mobility with massive Pandur EVO purchase. Austrian Ministry of Defense signs landmark deal with General Dynamics European Land Systems – Steyr.

Austria’s commitment to strengthening its defence capabilities reached new heights with signing a contract between the Austrian Ministry of Defense and General Dynamics European Land Systems – Steyr (GDELS).

The deal, the biggest in two decades, is worth €1.8bn ($1.9bn) and secures the delivery of 225 Pandur EVO 6×6 wheeled armoured vehicles and conversion kits catering to medical, command and control, and anti-tank missions.

The crisis in Ukraine has prompted Austria to reassess its military spending, with plans to increase it to 1% of GDP, up from the current 0.74%. However, this still lags behind neighbouring countries like Germany, which are committed to reaching 2% of GDP. The insufficient spending hampers Austria’s ability to modernise its military and make new acquisitions.

Domestic production and job creation

Under the watchful gaze of Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer and Minister of Defense Klaudia Tanner, the agreement heralds a moment for the Austrian Armed Forces, ushering in a new era of enhanced mobility, protection, and operational effectiveness. The procurement, embedded within Austria’s ambitious “Development Plan 2032,” shows the nation’s commitment to military modernisation.

The investment also carries implications for Austria’s economic landscape. With an impressive 70% value creation within Austria, the domestic production of Pandur EVO vehicles promises to safeguard and create jobs at more than 220 local companies. Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner affirmed the dual significance of the acquisition, emphasising its role in preserving Austria’s borders and nurturing the nation’s industry.

The deal’s significance extends beyond immediate defence needs, with the Pandur EVO’s production catalysing sustained economic growth. Martin Reischer, Managing Director of GDELS-Steyr, underscored the company’s commitment to fostering high-value partnerships within Austria’s industrial sector. Integrating new vehicles into production enhances military capabilities and generates new highly skilled jobs, further invigorating the local economy.

GDELS President Antonio Bueno hailed the procurement decision as a testament to the performance and versatility of the Pandur EVO family. Bueno expressed pride in the partnership between the company and the Austrian Armed Forces. The Pandur EVO’s reliability and adaptability have solidified its position as a trusted asset among military forces worldwide, with over 850 vehicles deployed across various nations.

Evolution of Austria’s military mobility

According to GlobalData’s “Austria Defense Market 2023-2028” report, the Austrian Army purchased 34 Pandur EVO armoured personnel carriers between 2019 and 2020. The choice of the Pandur EVO stemmed from the Austrian Army’s familiarity with the Pandur MTPz, which was acquired in 2003.

As production ramps up at GDELS’ Steyr facility in Vienna Simmering, the nation’s status as a centre of excellence for wheeled and tracked military mobility is set to be further solidified. The predecessors of the Pandur EVO have served faithfully since 1996.

In the face of evolving security challenges, Austria’s investment in the Pandur EVO represents a strategic imperative, but is also a testament to the nation’s resilience and forward-thinking approach to national defence. With the wheels of production set in motion, Austria stands poised to navigate the complexities of modern warfare with confidence and resolve.

In other recent Austrian military modernisation developments, Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles expanded its contract with the Austrian Army, facilitating the delivery of up to 300 trucks from its HX family of vehicles. 19 Feb 24. Singapore Airshow 2024: ST Engineering unveils Terrex s5. Singapore defence prime ST Engineering has launched the latest iteration in its Terrex 8×8 line of infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs).

Known as the Terrex s5, the variant was launched on 18 February, ahead of the Singapore Airshow 2024 exhibition taking place from 20 to 25 February at the Changi Exhibition Centre.

“Equipped with advanced vetronics and a hybrid electric drive option, it is a production-ready, 8×8 armoured fighting vehicle”, utilising the portmanteau of vehicle and electronics, a statement issued by ST Engineering reads.

“Its modular design and ability to transverse various terrains allows the vehicle to be highly configurable to a wide range of mission roles,” the company added.

Similar to its predecessor the Terrex 3, the Terrex s5 has a gross vehicle weight of 35,000 kg. However, it can carry a slightly heavier payload of 13,000 kg compared with the 12,000 kg payload of the Terrex 3 and it can accommodate a crew of two plus 10 troopers. (Source: Janes)

 

19 Feb 24. New RMMV trucks. More haste less speed? Another DE&S problem looms? In our piece (See: BATTLESPACE UPDATE Vol.26 ISSUE 06) UK PLS contract to RMMV UK) 500 Palletised Load System Trucks contract awarded to Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles UK – worth £282m. Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles UK (RMMV UK) have been awarded a £282m contract under Rapid Procurement, to deliver 500 HX 8×8 Palletised Load System (PLS) trucks to the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD).  The contract was placed under rapid acquisition within seven months from initial discussions. RMMV UK will deliver this key capability for the British Army within three months of contract award.  Currently, 320 vehicles are already undergoing modifications to the UK specification at RMMV UK’s facility in Doncaster, with a further 180 being supplied by 31 March 2024. The PLS trucks will deliver a key capability to the British Army providing support to operational activity, including carrying essential logistics, as such ammunition, food, water and support material, to operational locations.  Since discussions commenced, RMMV UK have been preparing for the programme and building up the fleet at their site in Doncaster, UK, ahead of the delivery to ensure the trucks are delivered within three months of contract award. The multi use trucks will continue to be built at Rheinmetall’s global production facility in Vienna enabling this capability to be delivered at pace to the British Army. They are then converted to the agreed UK specification at the RMMV UK facility in Doncaster.

HX Capability

The HX truck is NATO logistics backbone, delivering interoperability for user nations. Currently, there are more than 20,000 HX trucks in service across the world in NATO countries including Australia and New Zealand and European customers including Germany, Austria, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. The additional 500 HX PLS trucks being delivered to the British Army build on this in-service fleet and the existing HX fleet in service in the UK.

The RMMV HX PLS truck is an advancement of the original fleet built for the UK, currently in service with the British Army, offering an increase in capability.  The next generation HX truck sees improvements in the protection of the vehicle with a fully integrated armoured cab, improved carrying capacity, improved drive train and updated electronic architecture. The HX PLS truck can load and unload up to 16.5 tonnes of equipment without the need for the operator to leave the cabin. The HX provides a quicker, easier and safer method for getting stores around the battlefield and offers improved interoperability with other NATO nations.

However there are details not revealed under this Rapid procurement which a BATTLESPACE reader kindly supplied:

  • The trucks were built for the German Army but sold to the Brits because the Brits need them ASAP – the Germans are happy to wait and have some 2000 on order.
  • They are left hand drive, in German camouflage, with German Army modifications, and instructions, including all labels, in German.
  • Furthermore, they are 44M trucks, not HX77 trucks which the rest of the UK fleet is meaning there is a 50-60% difference between a 44M and an HX77 BOM.
  • I don’t know, but I doubt the British Add on armour will fit either!

The Editor asked our source the reason for the urgency.

The reply was, “Spare in year money?  It will all stem from the cancellation of the DROPS replacement project – Heavy Load Distribution Capability 20 years ago.  Some EPLS were procured in 2 x UORs followed by the conversion of HX77 cargo truck to EPLS about 8 years ago but, there were 2,000 DROPS trucks.  I suspect an outload study highlighted the blinding obvious.  Now of course they can’t armour them, but the armour kits are only STANAG 1 blast/STANAG 2 ballistic.  They have got 1,000 + kits though.”

The source also questioned whether the British SV has specific mounting points for the add-on-armour, which is quite heavy – 1.5 tonnes.  The mounting points are also quite expensive.  I recall that, where possible, and cost effective, RMMV deleted the mounting points from other customer’s vehicles because other customers now buy the Integrated Armoured Cab which offers high levels of protection.  I note that the doors do have the mounting points so the Brits would need to confirm.  I strongly suspect that they haven’t.  However, the Brit armour kit also includes automotive components such as springs and bump stops to accommodate the additional mass.  These are for HX60 (6 tonne), HX58/SX45 (6 tonne med and improved med mob), HX77 (15 tonne) and SX45 (Recovery).  Not the 44M variant.  These would need to be procured. Secondly, the current armour Theatre Entry standard is STANAG 2/2a, Project Fortress, which included NPA led to the upgrade of 289 Vehicles worth of armour from the STANAG 2/1 that was procured 20 years ago.

What will be the actual cost of this trumpeted Rapid Procurement?

 

16 Feb 24. US Army purchases Assault Breacher Vehicles from UK company.

The M1150 Assault Breacher is a highly mobile armoured minefield and obstacle breaching system based on the M1 Abrams chassis.

Department of Defense (DoD) has awarded a modified contract to Pearson Engineering – a combat systems supplier based in Newcastle, UK – to deliver M1150 Assault Breacher Vehicles (ABV) to the US Army.

Vehicle construction will occur in Anniston, Alabama, with an estimated completion date of 30 June 2025.

Fiscal 2024 weapons and tracked combat vehicle procurement, Army funds, in the amount of $11.2m (£8.9m) were obligated at the time of the award.

The M1150 ABV is a hybrid between General Dynamics’ M1 Abrams main battle tank and a harvesting machine, which offers crew safety and vehicle survivability while maintaining the necessary speed and agility to stay in sync with the manoeuvre force.

Pearson has provided the specially designed plough and the other mine-clearing accessories that are integrated onto the front of the Abrams hull. (Source: army-technology.com)
