08 Feb 24. G3 Systems extend the life of the British Army’s Deployable Engineering Workshops. G3 Systems has recently announced a rolling refurbishment programme to extend the life of the Deployable Engineering Workshops (DEW) capability for up to 10 years, whilst at the same time improving the DEWs overall performance to increase its sustainability and operational longevity.
The DEW system was first designed, developed and delivered into service in 2006 by G3 Systems, and the capability has stood the test of time having been used extensively on deployed operations around the world, including extended service in Afghanistan. The DEW comprises of twelve containers, along with a tented system, that provides a deployable engineering facility used by the military, and specifically the Royal Engineers, in theatre and for operational duties in both the UK and overseas. There are three remaining systems, which are used on a rotational basis dependent on operational needs.
Currently, one system is held in high readiness for deployment so for example could be used for the UK’s commitment to the NATO’s Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF). If tasked, this would be a key engineering capability required to support the high readiness brigade, along with other combat support and combat service support units such as the artillery, logistics and medical regiments. Another is deployed at Kinloss supporting current operations, leaving the third available to undergo the detailed life extension programme by G3 Systems at their integration facility in Weymouth.
The refurbishment programme is designed to extend the life of the capability by 10 years, ensure compliance with current electrical regulations, maximise the performance of the DEW and minimise its environmental impact. For example, G3 Systems will be employing smart technologies to reduce the power utilisation of the DEW, thus enhancing the working environment and reducing the DEW’s overall carbon footprint.

This programme is an excellent opportunity to extend the life of this superb capability. 07 Feb 24. Future soldier resupply could rely on AI-powered logistics, robo-boats. Soldiers in the coming years may use artificial intelligence to predict when and how to resupply troops and rely on swarms of automated watercraft and drones to get those supplies to personnel spread across vast distances.
That’s the vision of the director of the Army Futures Command’s newest Cross Functional Team-Contested Logistics.
Rob Watts, team director, shared that scenario at Wednesday’s Association of the U.S. Army’s forum on contested logistics.
The team, announced in March 2023, is currently working on concepts that would tie sensor data, much like the service began in recent years for tracking equipment maintenance needs, to predicting logistical needs.
“We want a tool to tell us, when we get to precision sustainment, that ‘you need to start moving some ammo to island X today because it’s going to take 10 days to get there, based on the threat information from the intel community,” Watts said.
Some of that has already been demonstrated, said Maj. Gen. Michelle Donahue, commander of the Army’s Combined Arms Support Command.
Donahue said that soldiers were able to pull sensor data from systems during a Project Convergence demonstration in 2022. Logistics specialists then used analytical tools to speed up decisions on what support was needed from a brigade to a battalion in seconds.
Even snapshot-type questions, such as how much fuel is available to units in three separate locations, should be answered in minutes by artificial intelligence, rather than having a soldier scour spreadsheets and radio disparate units, Watts said.
Tying all the data being collected through the various sensor systems the Army’s using could also improve planning.
One example Watts referenced was if a commander needed to extend an operation from five to 10 days. Such a system could answer that question accurately.
Watts’ team is also examining the role that Army watercraft will play in future conflict, especially in the Indo-Pacific region.
“If you can kind of envision a swarm of these autonomous vessels going out to various island chains, not having to beach because we can have the UAVs come in, meet somewhere over the water, grab portions and take that area’s portion — ammo, food, blood — whatever it is to the point of need,” Watts said.
Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology Doug Bush told Defense News in October that the service has a high interest in a new watercraft that it received the first prototype of in 2023.
The Maneuver Support Vessel-Light is a 100-foot-long landing craft with a range of 360 nautical miles. The large vessel is expected to replace a Vietnam War-era boat, the Landing Craft Mechanized-8. There are no current plans for it to be autonomous.
The initiative echoes efforts in the Navy and Marine Corps. The Marines evaluated an Expeditionary Warfare Unmanned Surface Vessel during a 2019 exercise.
Then-Lt. Gen. Eric Smith said at that year’s Modern Day Marine Expo that ships of that watercraft of that size, which could carry 50- to-1,200 tons could help with the Corps’ resupply needs. Smith is now the Marine Corps commandant.
Military Times reported in 2023 that Navy Capt. Randy Slaff, program executive officer for U.S. Special Operations Command’s maritime technology unit, is looking for uncrewed options for both its surface and subsurface watercraft.
The watercraft initiative was also highlighted in a paper by Lt. Col. Amos Fox published by AUSA on Tuesday titled, “Contested Logistics: A Primer.”
The paper highlights the need to shrink logistical tails and reduce the distances needed to move supplies by generating supplies such as ammunition, food, water and repair parts closer to the battlefield.
The paper calls for the Army to have its own watercraft fleet so that it is not dependent on Navy and Air Force transportation to move supplies. The key area it would improve, Fox claims, is resupply from the theater to the division level. (Source: Army Times)
07 Feb 24. American Rheinmetall Vehicles and GM Defense Deliver Prototypes for First Phase of U.S. Army’s Common Tactical Truck Program. American Rheinmetall Vehicles (Sterling Heights, MI) and GM Defense LLC (Washington, DC) have successfully delivered 3 prototype trucks for the first phase of the U.S. Army’s Common Tactical Truck (CTT) Program. The aim of the multi-phased program is to replace the Army’s family of heavy tactical trucks, with production of up to 40,000 trucks valued at up to $14 bn. The two powerhouse defense companies formed a strategic collaboration in 2022 to compete in the program; bringing together two world-class engineering and manufacturing giants to deliver a modern, tactical truck that focuses on Soldier safety and protection while enhancing capability through advanced technologies including advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), increased off-road mobility, cybersecurity hardening, superior survivability, autonomy readiness, and improved fuel efficiency among other critical emerging technologies. These capabilities, currently on most commercial vehicles, help reduce military vehicle accidents and lower the number of Soldiers exposed to dangerous convoy operations.
The team’s offering, the HX3 CTT, is the latest generation of trucks in the highly successful, combat proven, HX family of trucks which are in service with a number of NATO and U.S. allied nations. The HX family of trucks derives from MAN Truck and Bus commercial truck offerings bringing a high degree of commerciality to the fleet, a priority for the Army in the CTT program. The HX3 CTT next-generation system has enhanced on and off-road mobility, integrated survivability, and an open digital architecture supporting ADAS, and enabled for autonomous vehicle operation. 06 Feb 24. 123 GRIFFON and 22 JAGUAR: 2023 DGA scheduled delivery successfully completed by Nexter, a KNDS company, Arquus and Thales
- The temporary company grouping (Groupement Momentané d’Entreprises, GME) multi-role armoured vehicle (engin blindé multi rôles, EBMR), including Nexter, a KNDS company, Thales and Arquus, delivered, this year, 123 GRIFFON and 22 JAGUAR vehicles to the Directorate General of Armaments (Direction générale de l’armement, DGA), the French Defence Procurement Agency.
- GME EBMR once again achieves annual delivery targets.
Ongoing JAGUAR and GRIFFON deliveries and qualifications
As defined in the 2019-2025 military programming law, Nexter, a KNDS company, Thales and Arquus fulfilled all GRIFFON and JAGUAR DGA orders scheduled for 2023. These 2019 beginning supplies expended the global hand over to 575 GRIFFON and 60 JAGUAR.
In 2023, the EBMR company grouping introduced the first “Sanitaire” (SAN) GRIFFONs for the French Army Health Service (Système de santé des armées, SSA). This model, which was qualified in 2022, will be delivered to the Forces in early 2024.
Furthermore, on June 16, 2023, the DGA probated a VOA («Véhicule d’Observation d’Artillerie ») version of the GRIFFON and the 3rd Marine Artillery Regiment (3e RAMa) welcomed its first examples. The GRIFFON VOA replaces the VAB OBS. Originally designed to be integrated into the ATLAS artillery fire management chain, this vehicle present a retractable optronic observation mast, equipped with innovative technology availing surveillance, telemetry, pointing and laser designation in order to target and to guide artillery fire. It allows in addition MURIN tactical surveillance radar incorporation.
SCORPION, a program to transform the French Army
With other resources as SERVAL light VBMR vehicles, the JAGUAR armored reconnaissance and combat vehicle (EBRC) and the GRIFFON armored multi-role vehicle (VBMR) take part in the SCORPION program led by the DGA. They execute by design the SCORPION combat information system (SICS). The SICS allows collaborative combat among soldiers thanks to real-time communication between different units and battlefield digitisation. By the end of 2023, in order to test and articulate these new combat capabilities, the 6th Light Armored Brigade (6e BLB) will constitute the first SCORPION Joint Armored Brigade (BIA).
The JAGUAR is a 25-tonne armored reconnaissance and combat vehicle (EBRC), equipped with a 40mm telescoped ammunition cannon (CTA) and the MMP missile.
The JAGUAR is a unique vehicle in several ways:
- Its turret combines three state-of-the-art weapon systems: the Nexter 40mm CTA gun, two MBDA medium-range missiles (MMP) and the T3 Hornet remotely operated turret;
- Its SCORPION vetronics, developed by Thales, include next-generation optronics (IR/TV, missile departure detectors, laser warning detectors, etc.) and on-board tactical training capability;
- Its new-generation Arquus chassis, six driving wheels, innovative suspension and 400hp, 25-tonne, engine provide exceptional tactical, operational and strategic mobility.
The GRIFFON is a 24-tonne multi-role armored vehicle. Its variations enable it to carry out a wide range of missions: troop transport, command post, communication relays, artillery observation and 120mm mortar (MEPAC). Deployed in the Sahel from 2021 by the land forces, the GRIFFON presents recognised operational qualities, maintenance facilities and mobility. Other SCORPION vehicles integrate similar devices, such as vetronics and Hornet remotely operated turrets.
06 Feb 24. Netherlands considers creating tank battalion, but needs funding. The Netherlands is considering recreating its own tank battalion amid Russia’s war in Ukraine, though there’s currently no funding for the imitative, according to parliamentary documents.
The current defense budget doesn’t cover the costs of setting up a tank battalion, and such a decision would require additional money and would be up to the next government, Dutch Defence Minister Kajsa Ollongren and State Secretary of Defence Christophe van der Maat wrote in a Feb. 5 response to parliamentary questions.
The Netherlands, which had close to 1,000 tanks at the height of the Cold War, got rid of its last two tank battalions in 2011 after budget cuts. Since 2015, the country has leased 18 Leopard 2 A6 tanks from Germany that form one of five companies within the German-Dutch 414 Tank Battalion.
“Given the deteriorating security situation since 2022, it’s essential that our armed forces be strengthened further,” Ollongren and Van der Maat wrote. “If there is additional budget for the Armed Forces, we will look at capabilities across the board. A decision on a tank battalion is therefore up to a next Cabinet.”
NATO’s defense-planning capability review released in 2022 noted shortcomings for the Dutch military in land-based power and combat support. Adding a new tank battalion would strengthen the alliance and support the Netherland’s priority objective to create a heavy infantry brigade, the defense officials added.
The government of Prime Minister Mark Rutte took on a caretaker role after elections in November while a new Cabinet is negotiated. A caretaker government in the Netherlands traditionally limits itself to business at hand, while avoiding controversial decisions, such as allocating the bns of euros required to set up and operate a tank battalion.
A tank battalion costs between €260m and €315m (US$280m and U.S. $339m) a year, based on a 15-year planning period that includes buying the tanks as well as maintenance, spare parts, operating and personnel costs, the officials said. The battalion’s structure might mirror that of the 414 Tank Battalion, with the tanks owned by the Dutch and 20% of personnel being German.
The Dutch 2024 defense budget increased to €21.4bn from about €15bn in defense spending last year. The amount doesn’t include funding for tanks.
Amid Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine, NATO members in July last year pledged to spend at least 2% of their respective gross domestic product annually on defense, with 20% of defense funding allocated for major equipment. The Dutch 2024 budget amounts to 1.95% of GDP, according to the Dutch government.
The German government last summer invited the Dutch to a joint purchasing initiative for the Leopard 2 A8 main battle tank, according to the letter to parliament. The Netherlands asked to defer a decision given the government’s caretaker status.
The Czech Republic said in December it was in advanced negotiations with Germany for the A8 variant, developed by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann, a member of the KNDS joint venture. The tank would come with a 120mm canon by Rheinmetall. KNDS and Leonardo have also signed an agreement to provide Italy with a main battle tank based on the Leopard 2 A8.
The Netherlands is seeking to join the Franco-German Main Ground Combat System project. Paris and Berlin plan to invite other interested European Union members to join the project once their governments have defined the future tank’s specifications, French Armed Forces Minister Sébastien Lecornu said in September.

06 Feb 24. New Zealand Army to introduce Bushmasters into service. The New Zealand Army has laid out its plans to introduce Bushmaster 4×4 Protected Mobility Vehicles into service. The army has procured 43 Bushmasters from Thales Australia – under a NZD102.9m (USD62.3m) contract signed in July 2020 – to replace the ageing armoured Pinzgauer Light Operational Vehicles (LOVs) that were introduced into service between 2004 and 2006. The first batch of 18 Bushmasters was delivered to the New Zealand Army in May 2023.
Sarah Minson, deputy secretary for Capability Delivery at the New Zealand Ministry of Defence (MoD), told Janes on 2 February that New Zealand received the remaining 25 Bushmasters in 2023 as well.
The Bushmaster vehicle fleet was delivered to New Zealand in batches in 2023, with the final batch arriving in August, Minson said.
The MoD is now focused on the introduction into service of the vehicles, crew training, and the procurement of communications and digital systems for the fleet, Minson added. (Source: Janes)
06 Feb 24. 500 Palletised Load System Trucks contract awarded to Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles UK – worth £282m. Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles UK (RMMV UK) have been awarded a £282m contract under Rapid Procurement, to deliver 500 HX 8×8 Palletised Load System (PLS) trucks to the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD). The contract was placed under rapid acquisition within seven months from initial discussions. RMMV UK will deliver this key capability for the British Army within three months of contract award. Currently, 320 vehicles are already undergoing modifications to the UK specification at RMMV UK’s facility in Doncaster, with a further 180 being supplied by 31 March 2024. The PLS trucks will deliver a key capability to the British Army providing support to operational activity, including carrying essential logistics, as such ammunition, food, water and support material, to operational locations. Since discussions commenced, RMMV UK have been preparing for the programme and building up the fleet at their site in Doncaster, UK, ahead of the delivery to ensure the trucks are delivered within three months of contract award. The multi use trucks will continue to be built at Rheinmetall’s global production facility in Vienna enabling this capability to be delivered at pace to the British Army. They are then converted to the agreed UK specification at the RMMV UK facility in Doncaster.
HX Capability
The HX truck is NATO logistics backbone, delivering interoperability for user nations. Currently, there are more than 20,000 HX trucks in service across the world in NATO countries including Australia and New Zealand and European customers including Germany, Austria, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. The additional 500 HX PLS trucks being delivered to the British Army build on this in-service fleet and the existing HX fleet in service in the UK.
The RMMV HX PLS truck is an advancement of the original fleet built for the UK, currently in service with the British Army, offering an increase in capability. The next generation HX truck sees improvements in the protection of the vehicle with a fully integrated armoured cab, improved carrying capacity, improved drive train and updated electronic architecture. The HX PLS truck can load and unload up to 16.5 tonnes of equipment without the need for the operator to leave the cabin. The HX provides a quicker, easier and safer method for getting stores around the battlefield and offers improved interoperability with other NATO nations.
05 Feb 24. AUKUS Defense Scientists Test Robotic Vehicles. Defense scientists from Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States collaboratively tested a range of robotic vehicles and their sensors during a trial at Cultana Training Area, South Australia.
The Trusted Operation of Robotic Vehicles in a Contested Environment (TORVICE) trial was conducted in fall 2023 to identify and resolve vulnerabilities faced by autonomous systems in a congested electronic warfare environment
Dr Peter Shoubridge, Chief Land and Joint Warfare at Defence, said the trial was designed to test autonomous vehicle behaviour when under attack.
“Understanding how robotic vehicles react in contested environments accelerates our collective know-how and helps improve the system to overcome such attacks,” Dr Shoubridge said.
A network of robotic ground vehicles from the United Kingdom and the United States were configured to represent autonomous Multi-Domain Launchers and Uncrewed Ground Vehicles conducting Long Range Precision Fires and associated missions. The vehicles carried no weapons during the trial.
Australian scientists then subjected the vehicles to electronic warfare, electro optical and position, navigation, and timing attacks.
“Transitioning trusted robotic capabilities into the hands of our warfighters safely and ethically is a priority,” Dr Shoubridge said.
TORVICE is part of the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia’s commitment to the AUKUS Advanced Capabilities Pillar, known as Pillar II, under the Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy Working Group. The trial is part of an ongoing series pursuing a trilateral program of work on a range of leading-edge technologies and capabilities to promote security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
Dr. Kimberly Sablon, the U.S. Department of Defense’s Principal Director for Trusted Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy, said “The TORVICE project builds upon the work the AUKUS partners demonstrated in Salisbury in April. During this exercise, we performed rigorous red teaming of our autonomous/AI systems to assess and mitigate vulnerabilities and to improve their resilience in contested and complex environments.”
Through AUKUS, Australia, the UK, and the United States have collaborated to accelerate collective understanding of AI and autonomy technologies, and how to rapidly field robust, trustworthy AI and autonomy in complex operations, while adhering to the shared values of safe and responsible AI.
TORVICE follows the first AUKUS artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomy trial held in the UK in April. The aim of this AUKUS collaboration is to rapidly drive these technologies into responsible military use. (Source: U.S. DoD)
31 Jan 24. USMC pinning tactical vehicle budget decisions on infantry experiment. Amphibious combat vehicles (ACVs) and other tactical vehicles find themselves with an uncertain future until after the US Marine Corps (USMC) finishes its Infantry Battalion Experimentation (IBX), service officials said in January. The USMC first released its Ground Combat and Tactical Vehicle Strategy (GCTVS) in 2021, but service leaders have since incorporated the vehicle strategy into the budgeting process, said Kevin McConnell, deputy director for fires and manoeuvre at USMC Ground Combat Element division.
