16 Jul 21. Royal Canadian Navy receives delivery of second AOPS patrol ship. In 2015, Irving Shipbuilding was awarded a $2.3bn contract to build six Arctic and offshore patrol ships.
The Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) has officially received delivery of its second Arctic and offshore patrol ship (AOPS), HMCS Margaret Brooke, on 15 July.
HMCS Margaret Brooke is the second of six Harry DeWolf-class AOPSs being built by Irving Shipbuilding for the RCN.
The Canadian shipbuilder was awarded a $2.3bn contract to build these six AOPSs in January 2015 as part of the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS).
The patrol vessels will be deployed to carry out armed seaborne surveillance in the country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ), in addition to the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic coasts.
Last month, RCN officially commissioned its first AOPS ‘HMCS Harry DeWolf’.
Construction of the third, fourth and fifth AOPS is currently underway while construction of the sixth ship is expected to start next year.
Minister of Public Services and Procurement Canada Anita Anand said: “The National Shipbuilding Strategy continues to create and generate economic benefits in communities and across Canada while providing the members of the Royal Canadian Navy with the ships they need to carry out their important work for Canadians.”
HMCS Margaret Brooke will stay docked at Jetty NJ at the CFB Halifax Dockyard until the completion of post-acceptance work and final ship preparation.
The ship’s naming ceremony is expected to be held later this year and a formal commissioning ceremony is expected next year as the ship officially comes online with RCN service.
The AOPS is a 103m-long vessel with a 19m-long beam. It will boost the Canadian Navy’s presence in the Arctic and its global operating ability.
Royal Canadian Navy commander vice-admiral Craig Baines said: “The Royal Canadian Navy is thrilled to see the arrival of the second Arctic and offshore patrol ship, the future HMCS Margaret Brooke.
“I know that its captain, commander Nicole Robichaud, and crew have been eagerly awaiting this day, and all of the milestones to come, as their ship is brought into service and readied to add to the capabilities of our fleet at home and abroad.”

16 Jul 21. US Navy Christened First John Lewis-Class Oiler. The US Navy christened its first-in-class John Lewis-class replenishment oiler, the future USNS John Lewis (T-AO 205), during a 9 a.m. PDT ceremony Saturday, July 17, in San Diego, California. Speaker of the House of Representatives, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, delivered the ceremonial principal address. Remarks will also be provided by Mr. James Geurts, performing the duties of Under Secretary of the Navy; Vice Adm. Ross Myers, commander, Fleet Cyber Command and commander, U.S. Tenth Fleet; Rear Adm. Michael Wettlaufer, commander, Military Sealift Command; and Mr. Marcus Tyner, nephew of the ship’s namesake. In a time-honored Navy tradition, the ship’s sponsor, Ms. Alfre Woodard Spencer, will christen the ship by breaking a bottle of sparkling wine across the bow.
“Tomorrow we christen the first John Lewis-class replenishment oiler,” said acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas Harker. “Leaders like Representative Lewis taught us that diversity of backgrounds and experiences help contribute to the strength of our nation. There is no doubt that the future Sailors aboard this ship will be galvanized by Lewis’ legacy.”
The future USNS John Lewis is the first ship in its class and will be operated by the Navy’s Military Sealift Command. The ship is named in honor of the late politician and civil rights leader. John Lewis-class oilers will be named for other prominent civil rights leaders and activists.
The John Lewis-class ships are based on commercial design standards and will recapitalize the current T-AO 187-class fleet replenishment oilers to provide underway replenishment of fuel to U.S. Navy ships at sea. These ships are part of the Navy’s Combat Logistics Force.
In June 2016, the Navy awarded a $3.2bn contract to General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego for the design and construction of the first six ships of the Future Fleet Replenishment Ship, the John Lewis-class (T-AO 205), with construction commencing in September 2018. The Navy plans to procure 20 ships of the new class. Lewis passed July 17, 2020; the christening marks the one-year anniversary of his death. (Source: US DoD)

20 Jul 21. Leonardo is pleased to announce that the Polish Navy’s first AW101 (ZR285) achieved its first flight yesterday at the Company’s site in Yeovil. The flight demonstrated functional checks of the main airframe systems as well as the control system, and engine-handling checks were taken throughout to monitor the speed range of the aircraft. The flight envelope will now be opened further with testing exploring the bespoke mission equipment fitted to the aircraft.
This achievement is indicative of an integrated Leonardo team spanning the United Kingdom, Poland, and Italy. It highlights the strength in collaboration between Leonardo and the Company’s main industrial presence in Poland, PZL-Świdnik which acts as the prime contractor, as all teams work closely across the three nations to ensure this high-end capability for the Polish Ministry of National Defence.
In April 2019, the company announced it would supply four AW101s and a comprehensive integrated logistics and training package to the Polish Ministry of National Defence. The aircraft will significantly enhance the Polish Navy’s helicopter capability.
19 Jul 21. Tokyo provides more details about JGDSF’s new UH-2 helicopter. The Japan Ministry of Defense’s (MoD’s) Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA) has provided more details about the configuration of the new Subaru UH-2 twin-engined, multirole helicopter that is entering service with the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF). In a video released on 1 July via ATLA’s official YouTube channel, the agency said that the new rotorcraft, which is based on the jointly developed Subaru Bell 412EPX commercial helicopter, features a Pratt & Whitney PT6T-9 Twin-Pac turboshaft engine and an integrated glass cockpit. Other new aspects include a 30-minute dry-run capability by the main rotor’s gearbox and the application of Subaru’s proprietary laser-peening technology to improve mast-hub integration. The helicopter’s internal maximum gross weight is stated to be 12,200 lbs (5,534 kg), allowing it to transport greater loads than the UH-1J, which is set to be replaced by the UH-2. For instance, the agency said that the new helicopter can accommodate two reconnaissance motorcycles and their operators in the cabin. The UH-2 is also capable of stable landing on sea-going vessels and can be loaded onto cargo aircraft. Besides the traditional cargo and troop transport role, the Japanese utility helicopter can deploy troops by parachuting or rappelling ropes, and also carry out humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HA/DR) operations, specifically in the event of natural disasters. With regards to mission systems, the video mentions that the UH-2 can be equipped with an airborne video camera to perform HA/DR operations and provide real-time data via a video transmission system. The aircraft will also feature warning systems, chaffs, and flares for self-defence. (Source: Jane’s)

15 Jul 21. Dstl commences Newcastle recruitment. Recruitment opens for artificial intelligence and data science in Dstl’s planned Newcastle office. The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) has this week begun recruiting for staff to work in its forthcoming office in Newcastle which will specialise in artificial intelligence (AI) and data science. In April Dstl revealed plans to open an office at the National Innovation Centre for Data (NICD) within the Catalyst building. Vacancies opened this week and can be found on GOV.UK. The closing date is Sunday 1 August.
Dstl is seeking candidates for roles as AI researchers, data scientists, data engineers and systems thinkers. Successful applicants will exploit and adapt data to create strategic advantage and help accelerate the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence across Defence projects.
These new recruits will be at the forefront of keeping the UK safe from a huge range of threats, drawing in world class UK expertise to work on emerging challenges. AI has the potential to be applied to a vast range of Defence problems including: optimising the maintenance of our platforms, such as vehicles, planes and ships; rapidly identifying the people and platforms we need to send to a disaster zone as part of a UK response; to finding the crucial needle in a haystack of complex data reducing cognitive burden on operators.
Andrew Fraser, Dstl’s programme lead for the Newcastle office, said, “There is a strong North East talent pipeline with a large number of people who live within a short commute of the NICD and the close proximity to a number of world-class Universities with a high proportion of STEM and computing students. This large pool of suitably qualified potential staff will allow us to meet our ambitions to strengthen the diversity of our workforce with the skills, knowledge and expertise required to address some of Defence’s most tricky data related challenges.” (Source: https://www.gov.uk/)
