Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works (KS&EW) has held the steel cutting ceremony of the Pakistan Navy’s fourth MILGEM-class corvette.
Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the wing of the Pakistan Armed Forces, announced that key defence officials from the country attended the ceremony.
The latest event marks a major construction milestone.
In 2018, the Pakistan Navy signed a contract with Turkish manufacturer ASFAT to build four MILGEM-class corvettes.
As per the terms of the contract, two of these ships are being constructed in Pakistan’s KS&EW and the other two at Turkey’s Istanbul Naval Shipyard.
In October last year, a keel was laid for the Pakistan Navy’s third MILGEM class corvette during a ceremony held at KS&EW.
All four corvettes will be equipped with advanced surface, sub-surface and anti-air weapons & sensors, integrated through an advanced ‘Network Centric Combat Management System’.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) admiral Muhammad Amjad Khan Niaz expressed pride in witnessing the ceremony.
He also acknowledged commitment of KS&EW & ASFAT in meeting ‘challenging’ construction schedule despite the ongoing pandemic.
The MILGEM class corvettes will contribute to maintaining peace, stability and balance of power in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
Last November, Pakistan Navy commissioned its new Damen-built corvette, named PNS Tabuk, at Romania’s Port of Constanta.
This vessel is the second of two 2,300t corvettes that Damen constructed under a contract signed by the Pakistan Ministry of Defence in June 2017.

The Iranian Navy has inducted two new domestically manufactured naval platforms, Dena destroyer and Shahin minesweeper, into its fleet.
According to Iranian state media IRNA, the Dena destroyer was the fifth project of the ship-based missile launchers. The other four ships are already in service with the Iranian navy.
Iran President Hassan Rouhani was quoted by media sources as saying: “The defence ministry has achieved a major task today in supplying two ships to the Islamic Republic of Iran, the destroyer Dena and a minesweeper.”
The two new ships joined the Iranian naval fleet under the command of Hassan Rouhani. The induction ceremony was attended by several Army and Naval officials.
Iranian Defense Ministry Marine Industries Organization head rear admiral Amir Rastegari said that Dena’s fire control system has been manufactured by Iran Electronics Industries.
This fire control system is designed to track 40 targets and can engage with more than five targets at the same time.
He also said that Dena’s advanced telecommunication system features ‘anti-jamming’ capability.
Meanwhile, the Shahin minesweeper was manufactured by the Iranian navy forces and experts in Marine Industries Organization.
Shahin is fitted with a high-tech navigation system and can neutralise a wide range of mines in the sea.

11 June 21. UK practises for F-35B austere ops. The UK Royal Air Force (RAF) has practised the deployment of its Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning combat aircraft from austere operating locations. The UK intends to field its short take-off and vertical landing F-35B in a similar expeditionary manner as it did previously with the Harrier. (Janes/Patrick Allen) Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Mike Wigston, noted on 11 June that an F-35B from 617 Squadron currently deployed as part of the Royal Navy’s Carrier Strike Group 2021 (CSG21) had practised ground refuelling from an Italian Air Force Lockheed Martin C-130J Hercules the day before.
“Agile combat employment in action! Yesterday, a 617 Squadron F-35B refuelled from an Italian Air Force C-130 for the first time in an austere location,” the chief announced from his official Twitter account.
The disclosure that the RAF was undertaking austere exercises with the F-35B came some three years after the Lightning Force Commander, Air Commodore David Bradshaw, told Janes that the service was very much looking to build on its long experience of operating the BAE Systems Harrier in an expeditionary fashion by developing a similar concept of operations for the F-35B.
“It won’t be as carefree as the Harrier, because obviously you have a lot more [advanced systems and skin surfaces] going on with the F-35, but it is certainly something we are looking to do,” Air Cdre Bradshaw said in 2018. (Source: Jane’s)

10 Jun 21. US formally retires Open Skies aircraft. The United States formally retired the last of its two Open Skies Treaty aircraft on 4 June, with a ceremony held at the home of the 55th Operations Group at Lincoln Airport, Nebraska.
The retirement of the second Boeing OC-135B aircraft, tail number 670, came some seven months after the former Trump administration ended US participation in the international treaty on 22 November 2022.
“The 55th Wing has supported the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, and travelled around the world as part of the Open Skies Treaty mission since 1996,” the US Air Force (USAF) said, adding, “A 45th Reconnaissance Squadron aircrew will now fly the aircraft to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base [AFB], Arizona, for placement in permanent storage at the Aircraft Maintenance and Regeneration Center there.” The first OC-135B, tail number 672, was flown to Davis-Monthan AFB in May.
Delivery of aircraft 670 to ‘the boneyard’ marks the final episode in the US decision to quit the Open Skies Treaty that was first announced in May 2020. At that time, Washington cited repeated Russian violations, refusing, for instance, to allow access to observation flights within a 10 km corridor along the country’s border with the Russian-occupied Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, as well as restrictions placed on using an Open Skies refuelling airfield in the Russian-occupied region of Crimea. 14 June 21. UK Government’s Integrated Review drives Dstl’s recruitment campaign. Dstl – the science inside UK defence and security – is launching its biggest recruitment drive in recent years and comes as the Government pushes its priority on Science and Technology (S&T) for Defence and Security. The MOD is investing £6bn in Research and Development over the next 4 years, and includes an additional £1.1bn specifically for Science and Technology and pull through activities. It is part of the Government’s announcement ‘to sustain strategic advantage through S&T’ in the recent Integrated Review of Security, Defence, Development and Foreign Policy. This is a significant uplift not just for Dstl, but for industry and academia too.
Minister for Defence Procurement Jeremy Quin said, “Our over £6bn investment into Research and Development is central to the evolution of Defence and Security. This will ensure MOD Science and Technology programmes upgrade and adapt our forces to meet a range of future threats. The Dstl recruitment campaign paves the way for the next generation of highly-skilled scientists to work on sophisticated projects designing and engineering pioneering military equipment.”
Around 300 new positions are to be advertised at Dstl throughout June, July and August, with further positions expected in 2022.
MOD Chief Scientific Adviser Professor Dame Angela McLean FRS stated, “Through this investment, the Government has demonstrated its commitment to UK Science and Technology. This not only benefits recruitment at our Dstl sites but 80% of the investment will be going out to industry and academia to help us deliver key capabilities for UK Defence and Security.”
There is a wide range of opportunities available, from Space to Sensing, Cyber and Electronics, C4 (Command and Control, Communications and Computers), Data and AI. Dstl is looking for people who are inquisitive and have technical expertise, particularly those who have previously worked in the S&T field who might never have considered working in Defence and Security before. Roles include project leaders, engineers, scientists, analysts, physicists and technologists.
Dstl’s Interim Chief Executive Doug Umbers, said, “This is great news, not just for science and innovation, but for those wishing to start a career in Defence and Security. The work we do here is like no other and in some cases cannot be done anywhere outside of Defence. Those who join us at Dstl will be a vital part of providing national security at home and abroad.” (Source: https://www.gov.uk/)

Boeing [NYSE: BA] signed agreements today with ESG Elektroniksystem- und Logistik-GmbH and Lufthansa Technik that outline joint efforts to explore potential areas of collaboration in systems integration, training, support and sustainment work. The signed memorandum of understanding may lead to more definitive agreements should Germany select the P-8A Poseidon as its next maritime surveillance aircraft.
“Together with ESG and Lufthansa Technik, we will offer indigenous and cost-effective support, training and maintenance solutions that will bring the highest operational availability to the German Navy to fulfill their missions,” said Dr. Michael Haidinger, president of Boeing Germany, Central & Eastern Europe, Benelux & Nordics. “Our partnership with ESG and Lufthansa Technik is another testimony to who we are and how we operate in Germany. We are shaping meaningful and long-term industry partnerships that impact the local economy.”
Boeing, ESG and Lufthansa Technik have identified opportunities to collaborate in a number of areas and will explore these in more detail, including training and simulation, cyber security, systems integration, certification, environmental compliance, communications systems, electronic attack and electronic protect systems, aircraft and engine sustainment, component support services, predictive maintenance analysis and logistics services.
“This cooperation agreement underlines once again that we take our responsibility seriously when it comes to ensuring urgently needed capabilities,” said Christoph Otten, CEO of ESG. “As Boeing’s strategic partner for the P-8A Poseidon fleet, we are pleased to be able to make the Bundeswehr a viable offer characterized by effectiveness, efficiency and the reliable delivery of services. Lufthansa Technik has a long history in technical support of Boeing airplanes around the world. In addition, under Boeing’s Performance-Based Logistics program, Lufthansa Technik also provides hardware support to the Italian fleet of Boeing KC-767A tankers and has facilitated outstanding aircraft availability for the Italian Air Force.
“Lufthansa and Lufthansa Technik are partners with Boeing for more than 60 years. The companies know and value each other. This partnership is an excellent starting point for us to provide technical support at the highest level for this new aircraft, should our long-standing customer, the German Bundeswehr, procure P-8A,” said Michael von Puttkamer, Head of Special Aircraft Services, Lufthansa Technik.
The P-8A Poseidon offers unique multimission aircraft capability and is the only aircraft in service and in production able to meet the full range of maritime challenges faced by European nations. With the P-8A, Germany will be able to leverage full integration and interoperability with NATO nations in the region. Additionally, the P-8A offers significant capability to meet Germany’s collective defense obligations as part of Germany’s NATO membership and commitment to EU defense and security, including the maritime domain.
