19 May 21. Austal Australia Delivers 2 Cape-class Patrol Boats to Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard. Austal Limited (ASX:ASB) announced that Austal Australia has delivered two Cape-class Patrol Boats to the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard (TTCG).

The two 58 metre patrol boats, TTS Port of Spain (CG41) and TTS Scarborough (CG42), were accepted by Lieutenant Commander Francise Paulette Cazoe of the TTCG, at a delivery ceremony held at Austal Australia’s Henderson shipyard today, attended by Western Australia Minister for Minister for Police: Road Safety; Defence Industry; and Veterans Issues, The Hon Paul Papalia CSC MLA.

Austal was awarded a $126 million contract for the two patrol boats by the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in August 2019, with financial support provided by the Australian Government’s Defence Export Facility, arranged by Export Finance Australia (EFA). Speaking at the delivery ceremony, Austal Limited Chief Executive Officer Paddy Gregg said the two patrol boats were the first Cape-class vessels manufactured by Austal to be exported, following the delivery of ten similar vessels to the Australian Border Force and Royal Australian Navy over the past decade.

“The Cape-class is Austal Australia’s signature patrol boat design, with twelve vessels now delivered and a further six under construction at our dedicated defence shipbuilding facility in Henderson,” Mr Gregg said.

“These two patrol boats for the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard are the first Capes we’ve delivered for an export market and proudly represent the capability of not only the Western Australian defence industry, but Australia’s growing sovereign naval shipbuilding capability.

“It’s important to note that this export project would not have happened without the valuable support of the Australian Government, and particularly the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Department of Defence. I’d like to personally thank the Minister for Trade, the Honourable Dan Tehan and his predecessor, Senator the Honourable Simon Birmingham; as well as the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, Minister for Defence the Honourable Peter Dutton and his predecessor, Senator the Honourable Linda Reynolds and of course, the Minister for Defence Industry, the Honourable Melissa Price.

Accepting the vessels on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Lieutenant Commander Francise Paulette Cazoe thanked the Austal Australia team for their outstanding effort, dedication and commitment to quality and safety, especially under COVID19 pandemic conditions.

“The Trinidad and Tobago Government is delighted to accept these impressive new Cape-class Patrol Boats, that will significantly enhance our operational capability in Trinidad and Tobago,” Lt Cdr Cazoe said.

“The Austal Australia team have been very professional, supportive and efficient throughout the design and construction process and we thank them for their outstanding effort over the past two challenging years.”

The TTCG’s Cape-class Patrol Boats are based on the proven 58 metre monohull vessels operating with the Australian Border Force and Royal Australian Navy, with a number of design customisations to meet TTCG mission requirements, including additional armament placements and crew accommodation for up to 27 persons.

Both TTS Port of Spain and TTS Scarborough are capable of patrols up to 28 days, with a range of over 3,000 nautical miles and a top speed in excess of 25 knots. Each vessel has two 7.3 metre rigid hull inflatable boats that may be deployed while underway, for a variety of constabulary missions.

Austal is also delivering 21 steel-hull Guardian-class Patrol Boats for 12 Pacific Island nations and Timor Leste under the SEA3036-1 Pacific Patrol Boat Replacement Project, with ten patrol boats delivered since 2018. Austal provides in-service support to both the Cape and Guardian-class Patrol Boat fleets through an expanding service centre network including Henderson, Western Australia, Cairns, Queensland and Darwin, Northern Territory. 19 May 21. New ‘Inspiration Class’ Type-31 warships named. The names of five next-generation Type-31 frigates for the Royal Navy have been announced by the First Sea Lord, Admiral Tony Radakin. Approved by HM The Queen, the vessels will be named HMS Active, HMS Bulldog, HMS Campbeltown, HMS Formidable and HMS Venturer.

Grouped together as the Inspiration Class, the names of the new vessels are drawn from former warships and submarines whose missions and history will inspire Royal Navy operations.

The names also represent the Royal Navy’s future vision: HMS Active signifies the forward deployment of Royal Navy ships to protect UK values and interests, whilst HMS Bulldog is focused on operational advantage in the North Atlantic.

HMS Campbeltown symbolises the ‘raiding from the sea’ focus of the Royal Marines’ Future Commando Force, HMS Formidable recognises the history of aircraft carrier strike operations and HMS Venturer promotes the navy’s technology and innovation forward-look.

First Sea Lord, Admiral Tony Radakin said:

I welcome the announcement of the names of the Inspiration-class frigates. Each of the names has been chosen for evoking those values we strive for: cutting-edge technology, audacity and global operations.

They represent the best of Britain’s world-class shipbuilding heritage and will fly the flag for decades to come.

As announced by the Prime Minister last November, Defence has received an increase in funding of over £24bn across the next four years, enabling our Armed Forces to adapt to meet future threats. As part of this, the Type-31 frigates will replace the five general-purpose Type-23 frigates currently in service with the Royal Navy. Expected to enter service by 2028, they will carry a crew of up to 105 and will be deployed on duties around the world, working alongside new Type-26 frigates dedicated to submarine detection operations.

Initially announced by the MOD in November 2019, the new vessels will be constructed by Babcock at its dockyard in Rosyth and the first steel cut is due to take place this summer.

Outlined in the recent Defence Command Paper, the MOD remains committed to delivering on new vessels for the Royal Navy. The Type-31 will form part of Royal Navy Integrated Force 2030 vision, as it becomes a threat-focussed service.

  • HMS Active: Named after the Type 21 frigate HMS Active which served the Royal Navy from the late 1970s until the mid-1990s. As well as taking part in the operation to liberate the Falklands, supporting the final battles for Port Stanley, Active spent her career deployed in support of Britain’s Overseas Territories and global interests, from tackling drug traffickers to enforcing UN embargos and providing humanitarian aid in the aftermath of natural disasters.
  • HMS Bulldog: Named after the destroyer which helped turn the tables in the Battle of the Atlantic thanks to the bravery of her boarding party. They searched stricken U-boat U110 in May 1941 and recovered the Germans’ ‘unbreakable’ coding machine, Enigma, plus codebooks. It gave Britain a vital intelligence lead at a key stage in the struggle to keep its Atlantic lifelines open.
  • HMS Campbeltown: Named after the wartime destroyer which led the ‘greatest commando raid of all’: St Nazaire in France. In March 1942, the ship rammed the dock gates and hidden explosives aboard blew up, wreaking havoc in the port and denying its use to major German warships for the rest of WW2. The action epitomises the raiding ethos driving the Royal Marines’ Future Commando Force.
  • HMS Formidable: Named after the WW2 carrier which epitomised carrier strike operations from Norway, through the Mediterranean to the Pacific. She survived kamikaze strikes and took the war to the Japanese mainland with Lieutenant Commander Robert Hampton Gray earning the last naval VC of the war for his daring sinking of a Japanese destroyer just six days before Tokyo surrendered.
  • HMS Venturer: Named after the WW2 submarine which sank German U-boat U864 northwest of Bergen, Norway, on February 9 1945 – while both vessels were submerged. Venturer enjoyed a technological and intelligence advantage over her foe thanks to decoded messages indicating the enemy’s location and a superbly-trained crew who located and destroyed the U-boat. 18 May 21. ADF unveils new research vessel. Defence has launched scientific research vessel the R/V Ginan to support Defence’s maritime capabilities.

The Australian Defence Force has launched a new maritime research vessel to support Australia’s research capabilities along the nation’s coast.

The 12-metre R/V Ginan was contracted to Australian-based company Steber International in NSW’s Taree, with the contract valued at $1.8m. It is expected that the R/V Ginan will take the place of Defence Science’s Work Boat, which has been in service for over 30 years.

The vessel is expected to undertake research primarily in Sydney Harbour and Jervis Bay, but also along the coast.

Minister for Defence Industry Melissa Price outlined that commissioning the R/V Ginan was a crucial development for Australia’s maritime scientific research.

”We have a long history of working with Steber International and have been supported by Cummins South Pacific, Olectric Systems and a number of small service providers in the mid-north NSW coast area,” Minister Price said.

“This has enabled us to strengthen Defence capability.

“While the vessel will initially focus on the development and testing of maritime robotic and autonomous systems, its versatility means it will also be used to support a range of programs, including hydrographic survey and ocean sciences.”

In a statement, member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie explained why Defence chose the word ‘Ginan’ to represent the new research vessel.

“For the Wardaman people of northern Australia, it also refers to the fifth brightest star in the Southern Cross,” Dr Gillespie said.

“This project is clear evidence of our government’s commitment to using Aussie know-how in the regions to grow our Defence capability.”

17 May 21. Philippine Navy to receive first three Shaldag Mk V patrol boats in Q1 2022. The Philippine Navy (PN) is expecting to receive the first three of eight Shaldag Mk V fast patrol boats ordered from Israel Shipyards in the first quarter of 2022, the state-owned Philippine News Agency (PNA) quoted PN Chief Vice Admiral Giovanni Carlo Bacordo as saying on 14 May.

The boats, which are meant to meet a PN requirement for missile-capable fast attack interdiction craft (FAIC-M), will be initially deployed in the ‘Mindanao area of responsibility’ where there are “continuous operations against LTGs [local terrorist groups] and CTGs [communist terrorist groups]”, said the vice admiral.

The 32.65 m-long vessels are “best suited operating in these environments to act as an effective deterrent not only against the terrorist groups but also against other lawless elements operating in the littoral areas”, he added.

The Philippine Navy expects to receive the first three of eight Shaldag Mk V patrol boats ordered from Israel Shipyards in the first quarter of 2022, according to PN chief Vice Adm Bacordo. (Israel Shipyards)

The statement came only two days after Israel Shipyards announced it had won a tender to supply Shaldag Mk Vs to the navy of an East Asian country. The company noted in a press release that the agreement includes a knowledge transfer and training regarding the construction and maintenance of the boats, as well an upgrade of the customer’s shipyard for this purpose.

Vice Adm Bacordo said that the project, which consists of two lots, is worth about PHP10bn (USD209.4m). Lot 1 is for acquisition of the naval platforms and the upgrade of Cavite Naval Shipyard, while Lot 2 is for the procurement of the onboard weapon systems, which includes remotely-controlled gun and missile systems, reported the PNA. 19 May 21. Taiwan’s first 42 upgraded F-16Vs in service at Chiayi Air Base. The first 42 Republic of China Air Force (RoCAF) F-16 multirole fighter aircraft recently upgraded to the latest F-16V standard have entered service with the 4th Tactical Fighter Wing (TFW) at Chiayi Air Base in central Taiwan.

A Ministry of National Defence (MND) spokesperson told Janes on 19 May that the aircraft entered service at the end of March, shortly after Chief of Staff of Air Force Command Lieutenant General Huang Chih-wei announced that Taiwan had completed the first tranch of upgrades for the RoCAF’s fleet of 141 F-16A/B/C/D Fighting Falcon fighters under the Peace Phoenix Rising programme.

The 4th TFW (also known as 455th) is comprised of three Tactical Fighter Groups: 21, 22, and 23. However, the MND would not confirm whether any of the three groups are composed solely of F-16Vs.

The USD3.7bn upgrade programme, which was launched in 2016, is being carried out by Taiwan’s Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC) in collaboration with Lockheed Martin, and is slated for completion by the end of 2023.

Facing China on Taiwan’s western coast, Chiayi Air Base has been at the heart of RoCAF activities over the past year amid a sharp increase in incursions by Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft into Taiwan’s southwestern air-defence identification zone (ADIZ).

14 May 21. Leonardo’s AW101 global fleet hits 500,000 flight hour milestone.

*Leonardo’s AW101 global helicopter fleet operates across four continents covering a host of missions including Search and Rescue (SAR), Personnel Recovery, Amphibious Support, Early Warning, Tactical Troop Transport, Anti-Submarine and Anti-Surface Warfare amongst many others

*With a focus on survivability, the AW101’s design is driven by customer demands to operate in harsh weather and hostile locations

*One of the most advanced, versatile and capable multi-role helicopters available, there are around 200 aircraft in-service today

The AW101 multi-role medium-heavy three-engine helicopter’s global fleet has surpassed more than half a million flight hours. With one leading operator exceeding more than 7,500 hours on a single aircraft, nearly 200 units are in-service today by over 10 customers in over ten countries worldwide, with aircraft on order currently including units for Norway and Poland. The global reach of the platform extends from North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, to the Asia-Pacific region.

The Royal Navy will be using its AW101 Merlin Mk2 helicopters to keep watch over the upcoming carrier strike group deployment and the surrounding seas, ensuring the ships and their crews are well protected from enemy submarines, surface ships, aircraft, and missiles. The AW101 Merlin Mk4 will also provide movement and transportation of people and supplies, in addition to amphibious air manoeuvre for ship to shore operations, if required.

Other key operators of the platform, among others, include the Italian Air Force, the Royal Danish Air Force and Portuguese Air Force who utilise the aircraft primarily for SAR and/or Personnel Recovery missions. The Italian Navy has been flexibly using its AW101 fleet for a range of roles including all main missions in the naval environment. The Royal Canadian Air Force has been operating the CH-149 Cormorant variant since 2001, undertaking thousands of lifesaving SAR missions in the most extreme and harsh environmental conditions, from coast to coast.

Orland Air Force base is the second Search and Rescue (SAR) Base to go-live with the new AW101-612. The SAR Queen is taking over duties from the Sea King and this Base marks a significant milestone as the first Base to go-live separately from the 330 squadron’s home and support of the Test and Evaluation unit in Sola.

The rescue helicopter’s area of responsibility covers coastal sea lanes where weather conditions are known to be most challenging at times.

The next step in confirming the operational capability and resilience of the support solution. All crews, support staff, tooling, infrastructure, ground based training aids and spares have been established and tested in readiness for the commencement of operation. With an intense month of flying now planned, the aircraft, crews and supporting units will be put through their paces and will set the tone for operations ahead.

The next and most northern Base, Banak, is anticipated to go-live at the end of 2021. This Base will be another step forward as the programme continues to make significant strides toward SAR operations across Norway and the harsh seas it protects, taking the AW101 into a new league of operation.

Operating with 4-6 crew, the AW101 can rescue more than 20 survivors in a single mission whilst simultaneously delivering specialised trauma treatment with a dedicated medical team. The wide cargo door and versatile rear ramp enable uncompromised recovery of survivors, stretchers and equipment.

Each aircraft is provided with an advanced SAR equipment package, including the multi-mode Osprey AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) surveillance radar system from Leonardo, which provides 360 coverage. The large cabin doors and rear ramp provide easy access for personnel, survivors and equipment into the 27 m3 cabin which has stand-up head room throughout.

The AW101 Norway Training Centre at Stavanger Sola Airport includes an AW101 Full Flight Simulator which continues to support the training of Norwegian aircrew and is available to other AW101 customers.

19 May 21. Germany tweaks Bundeswehr structure. German Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer and Generalinspekteur der Bundeswehr (armed forces chief) General Eberhard Zorn presented a document with the main points of the continuing reform of Germany’s military on 18 May. The document seeks to accelerate procurement, streamline the command structure, and increase the readiness of the Bundeswehr.

The document does not seek radical reforms and no personnel cuts or base closures are planned. The target continues to be for a Bundeswehr personnel strength of 203,300 soldiers and 67,800 civilians.

However, it is planned to streamline the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and its staff so they can concentrate on core tasks, with an emphasis on working with the Bundestag, Germany’s parliament, oversight of subordinate areas, and strategic co-ordination and leadership of the Bundeswehr. The ministry will continue to be located in both Berlin and Bonn.

A national territorial defence command will also be established in both the cities. In addition to territorial defence, it will support NATO and EU allies during exercises and when their forces transit Germany. At the tactical command level, Germany’s 16 regional defence commands will be reinforced and further developed.

Command of the Bundeswehr’s forces will be strengthened with domain commands: land, air/space, and cyber and information. In addition to army, Luftwaffe, and navy chiefs, there will be one for the cyber and information domain. A medical command will also be established in April 2022. (Source: Jane’s)

 

18 May 21. RAF stands up new ISTAR Air Wing. The UK Royal Air Force (RAF) has stood up the new Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) Air Wing, it was announced on 17 May.

The ISTAR Air Wing is located at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire, and is under the command of Group Captain Chris Melville.

“The Air Wing has been formed as part of the RAF Future Operating Model, a proposal that was set out by the Chief of the Air Staff to create the next generation air force,” the RAF said, adding that the ISTAR Air Wing will comprise the flying Squadrons, Air Support Wing, Air Engineering Wing, Number 1 Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance Wing, and the ISTAR Operational Conversion Unit.

“RAF Waddington will continue to operate as normal, with the base enabling the ISTAR [Air Wing] and supporting the operational outputs of the Air and Space Warfare Centre, 8 Force Protection Wing and its various reserve units, whilst future projects include the implementation of Protector and integration of the Red Arrows,” the RAF said. 20 May 21. Fincantieri and Comau, two Italian excellences and world leaders in their respective reference markets, signed a letter of intent to develop prototypes of robotized steel welding solutions and the resulting construction of series of machines, to be implemented at first in Fincantieri shipyards.

Comau CEO, Paolo Carmassi, and Fincantieri General Manager, Fabio Gallia, signed the agreement.

The first joint project, of which the operating agreement is currently underway and related tests are scheduled at the Fincantieri shipyards by the first half of the year 2022, will involve a welding robot vehicle consisting of an anthropomorphic welding robot and a remote control tracked vehicle.

Fincantieri and Comau will be co-owners of the knowhow and intellectual property generated while developing the new concept design. At a later stage, they will explore the possibility of marketing this kind of welding product not only in the shipbuilding industry, but also in relevant business segments, such as the production of large size steel products for infrastructure and special works (e.g. continuous structures for suspension bridges, structures for large size hoisting systems, products for special constructions).

Moreover, the companies agreed to continue considering and examining new opportunities to create highly innovative solutions and contents within the broader scope of a Digital Factory.

18 May 21. China’s Norinco, CETC to deepen co-operation on military systems. Two of China’s largest defence industrial enterprises – the China North Industries Group Corporation (Norinco Group) and the China Electronics Technology Group (CETC) – have signed an agreement to deepen collaboration on military technologies.

The accord is understood to be focused on CETC supporting the electronics requirements of Norinco equipment, including missile systems, vehicles, unmanned systems, and radars.

Norinco and CETC said in a joint statement that the agreement, signed on 13 May, would support co-operation across “various fields”, with the aim of aiding China’s development of a “world-class military”. The two state-owned corporations said the agreement would also enhance synergies and promote “high-quality development”.

“It is hoped that the two parties will [use the agreement] as an opportunity to further utilize their respective advantages, to push the co-operation between the two sides to a new level, and to make greater contributions to serving national defence and military modernization,” added the statement.

Citing company officials, the statement also indicated that the agreement would facilitate joint projects to accelerate both companies’ development of technologies to support “mechanisation, informationisation, and intelligence integration”

This move is a direct link to an objective outlined in China’s 14th Five Year Plan (FYP), which runs 2021-25, to accelerate efforts to enable the People Liberation Army (PLA) to transition from “mechanisation towards informationisation and intelligentisation”. It is also understood to be a reference to a transition from military platform modernisation and recapitalisation towards the widespread adoption within the PLA of fully networked digital military systems – and intelligent systems – enabling higher levels of jointness and combat capacity. 17 May 21. Airbus has appointed Francisco Javier Sánchez Segura. Executive Vice President Engineering for its division Defence and Space, effective 1 July 2021. Currently, Sánchez Segura serves as Senior Vice President Military Aircraft and Head of Aircraft and Systems in Airbus Defence and Space. Sánchez Segura will replace Sabine Klauke and will become Member of the Executive Committee Airbus Defence & Space. In his new capacity, Francisco Javier Sánchez Segura will report to Michael Schoellhorn who was recently appointed CEO of Airbus Defence & Space as of 1 July 2021. He began his career at Airbus in 2002 where he has held numerous management positions in Madrid, Hamburg, Seville and Toulouse. Before assuming his present duties, Sánchez Segura was Head of A400M Programme Development, in charge of delivering current and future capabilities for the most modern military transport aircraft. Sánchez Segura holds a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from Saint Louis University and a Master of Science Aerospace Vehicle Design from Cranfield University.

Today Lockheed Martin announced OJ Sanchez as the new vice president and general manager for Aeronautics Integrated Fighter Group (IFG), succeeding Bridget Lauderdale who was recently named vice president and general manager for the F-35 Lightning II Program.  In this new role, Sanchez is responsible for the development, manufacture and sustainment of the F-16 and F-22 programs as well as the T-50, K-FX and J-FX international partnerships.  Prior to assuming this role, he was vice president and general manager for the F-22 Program, ensuring financial, schedule and quality performance targets were achieved. Sanchez has also served in senior leadership roles in Sustainment and the F-35 Program. He joined Lockheed Martin in 2014 after a distinguished U.S. Air Force career, where his final assignment was serving on the Joint Staff supporting global operations for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C. 18 May 21. USRA Announces Elections of 2021 Members to Board Positions. Universities Space Research Association (USRA), an association of 114 universities, today announced the election of new members to its Board of Trustees — the governing body of USRA.

At its Annual Meeting, USRA’s Council of Institutions elected the following four Board members:

Daniel E. Hastings, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was elected Region I Trustee

Wayne A. Scales, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), was elected Region III Trustee

Elizabeth A. Lada, University of Florida, was elected Region IV Trustee

General Lester L. Lyles, United States Air Force, (Ret.) was elected At-Large Trustee.

Dr. John A. Montgomery, Chair of the Board of Trustees said, “I am pleased to welcome our four newest members to USRA’s Board. They each have a unique background, with diverse experiences that make them an asset to USRA.”

Dr. Jeffrey A. Isaacson, President and CEO of Universities Space Research Association noted, “The leadership experiences our new board members bring will be invaluable to USRA and its unique non-profit mission. I look forward to working with each of them.”

Prof. Daniel E. Hastings currently serves as head of the Aeronautics and Astronautics department at MIT. He has held various leadership positions at MIT, including Director of the Engineering Systems Division and Dean for Undergraduate Education.

His research specializations include synergetic interactions between space systems and the space environment, space propulsion, space policy, spacecraft manufacturing processes, and space system architectures.

Prof. Hastings served as Chief Scientist for the U.S. Air Force from 1997 to 1999. He was also the Chair of the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board from 2002 to 2005; and from 2002 to 2008, he was a member of the National Science Board.

He is a recipient of numerous accolades, including election to the National Academy of Engineering.

Prof. Hastings received his bachelor’s degree from Oxford University, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT.

Prof. Wayne A. Scales is the J. Byron Maupin Professor of Engineering in the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech. He also serves as the founding Director of the Center for Space Science and Engineering Research. Prof. Scales was Co-Director of the Interdisciplinary Graduate Education Program in Remote Sensing and is Affiliate Professor in the Kevin T. Crofton Department of Aerospace and Ocean Engineering at Virginia Tech.

His research focuses on space plasma turbulence with applications to active space experiments, natural space plasma turbulence in the ionosphere and magnetosphere, dusty space plasmas, and global navigational satellite system remote sensing.

A recipient of numerous awards for excellence in research, teaching, and service in the College of Engineering, Prof. Scales has over 100 refereed publications and has been principal investigator or co-principal investigator on more than 20 research projects. He has also served on various advisory boards.

He received B.S. and M.S. degrees with Honors in Electrical Engineering and Applied Mathematics from Virginia Tech, and a Ph.D. from Cornell University in Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics, with focus in Space Plasma Physics.

Prof. Elizabeth A. Lada is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Astronomy at the University of Florida. She was formerly a postdoctoral researcher at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and, later, a Hubble Fellow at the University of Maryland. She joined the faculty at the University of Florida in the fall of 1996.

Her research centers on understanding star and planet formation. In particular, she has made significant contributions to our understanding of the origin, properties, evolution, and fate of young, embedded star clusters within molecular clouds. This includes investigations of the formation, evolution, and lifetime of circumstellar, protoplanetary disks. Prof. Lada has published approximately 200 publications, including 77 refereed publications, with more than 10,000 citations and an H-index of 45.

Prof. Lada has a distinguished service record, having served as a member of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Math and Physical Sciences Advisory Committee, NSF Division of Astronomical Sciences Senior Review Committee, the National Optical Astronomy System Roadmap Committee, the National Radio Astronomy Observatory’s Program Advisory Committee, and the Nominating Committee for the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy.

A recipient of several awards, she received the Annie J. Cannon Prize from the American Astronomical Society in 1992 and an NSF CAREER award in 1998. In 1999, she received a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers.

Prof. Lada holds a B.S. in Physics from Yale University and a Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of Texas.

General Lester A. Lyles is a former Vice Chief of Staff of the United State Air Force; former Commander, Air Force Materiel Command; and former Director, Ballistic Missile Defense Organization.  He has been a member of the NASA Advisory Council since 2005 and serves as its current Chair.  He was also a member of the Review of U.S. Human Spaceflight Plans Committee and chaired the National Research Council’s Committee on the Rationale and Goals of the U.S. Civil Space Program. An elected member of the National Academy of Engineering, General Lyles also chaired the Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board of the National Academy of Engineering from 2010 to 2016.

General Lyles serves currently on the Board of Directors for several major corporations, and is a past Chairman of United Services Automobile Association (USAA). He served previously on the Secretary of State’s International Security Board, the Defense Science Board, and the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board, appointed by the White House from December 2009 to May 2013.

17 May 21. Kleos Space chair to step down. Kleos Space, a space-powered radio frequency reconnaissance data-as-a-service (DaaS) company, has informed shareholders that Air Commodore (Ret’d) Pete Round will step down as chair of the board within the next 12 months after overseeing a leadership transition. According to the firm, Kleos and Round have come to a mutual agreement, stating that “the time was now right” to commence a search for a new independent non-executive director and chair.

This, Kleos has claimed, would “enhance the corporate governance structures” of the firm through its next growth phase.

21 May 21. Lockheed Martin Australia has appointed Mike Scott as program director and Julia Dickinson as chief engineer, military satellite communications, to drive its expansion in the space domain. Scott will be tasked with providing project management services to the Australian space program, leveraging his experience in the defence, rail and mining sectors, as well as 15 years of service in the Royal Australian Air Force. The newly appointed program director’s previous roles included overseeing in-country modification of the RAAF’s Wedgetail aircraft, the Australian Defence Force’s High Frequency Communications System, and command and control systems for both the RAAF and the Australian Army. 18 May 21. Nova Group has confirmed the appointment of two new board members in a company statement released this week.

Software, aerospace and professional services firm Nova have confirmed the appointment of two non-executive members to the company board, with the expected commencement date of 1 July 2021.

The two new non-excutive board members to the Nova Group are Mark Gill and Martin Broadhurst.

Group chair Jim Whalley outlined that the pair will bring significant expertise in the technology, cyber and defence industries to Nova Group.

Mark Gill, who will be based in Brisbane, has served in senior executive roles in a number of technology companies, both within the private and public sector.
