05 May 21. HMAS Cairns to receive $155m upgrade. The federal government is undertaking a $155m upgrade to HMAS Cairns as part of the Navy Capability Infrastructure Sub-program, in line with the 2020 Force Structure Plan.
The federal government confirmed this week that it will be upgrading the facilities at HMAS Cairns as part of a $155m package to support the Arafura Class offshore patrol vessels.
It is expected that Watpac Construction will oversee the government’s NCIS-8A HMAS Cairns Building and Maritime Works program. In accordance with defence policies, Watpac will execute a Local Industry Capability Plan with 80 per cent of subcontractors coming from the local region.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison outlined that the package falls in line with the 2020 Force Structure Plan, with the government committing $270bn to achieve critical defence capabilities. “The upgrades at HMAS Cairns will create local jobs both during the construction phase and afterwards through ongoing sustainment,” the PM said. “More jobs will be created through the supply chain and in off-site manufacturing. This investment will be a significant boost to the local Cairns economy as we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.”
The package forms part of the government’s $2.1bn Navy Capability Infrastructure Sub-program, with investment supporting the upgrade to naval facilities across the nation, according to the Minister for Defence Industry Melissa Price.
“Works will include demolition of the existing Navy wharf and construction of a new wharf in its place, and an upgrade of the existing explosive ordnance loading buoy in Trinity Inlet,” Minister Price said.
“Landside operational support facilities will include a new office building, upgrades to maintenance and logistics facilities, and new storage facilities.”
It is hoped that the upgrade will be completed by December 2024. (Source: Defence Connect)

Germany-based thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) has delivered the second next-generation SA’AR-6 class missile corvette ‘INS Oz’ to the Israeli Navy.
The naming and handover ceremony was carried out at Kiel in the presence of officials following all Covid-19 safety measures.
As the general contractor, TKMS is under contract to construct four SA’AR-6 class missile corvettes.
In May 2015, the contract for four SA’AR 6 corvettes was signed with TKMS as the lead and the German Naval Yards as the project partner.
thyssenkrupp Marine Systems CEO Dr Rolf Wirtz said: “As the first ship in the history of the Israeli Navy with this name, the ‘INS Oz’ will establish a new tradition.
“We are convinced of this here at thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, because she has everything it takes. We are very proud that, after the first-of-class, this is now the second vessel to receive this honour.”
In February 2018, the construction phase commenced with the steel cutting ceremony of the first SA’AR 6-corvette after completion of the design phase. The first ship was undocked 15 months after the first steel was cut. In May 2019, the first SA’AR-6 class missile corvette was christened as INS Magen. It was handed over to the Israeli Navy in November last year. TKMS noted that the Israeli Navy is equipping the missile corvettes with radar and weapon systems. The SA’AR 6-corvettes have an overall length of 90m and a beam of approximately 13m. The displacement of each corvette is approximately 2,000t. The remaining two corvettes of the series are scheduled for delivery this year. (Source: naval-technology.com)

Daejeon is one of four frigates of the class ordered from DSME. The first two – ROKS Daegu (818) and ROKS Gyeongnam (819) – entered service in March 2018 and January 2021. The company is also building the sixth frigate on order for the service. The remaining four vessels of the class – the third, fourth, seventh, and eighth on order – are being built by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI). The Daegu class is a larger variant of South Korea’s six Incheon (FFX-I)-class ships, the first of which entered service in 2013.
The class has an overall beam of 14m, a standard displacement of 2,800 ton, and a full-loaded displacement of 3,650 ton. Each FFX-II ship is powered by one Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbine engine and two Leonardo DRS permanent magnet motors driven by MTU 12 V 4000 diesel-generator sets in a combined diesel-electric or gas (CODLOG) configuration. Each of the ships can attain a maximum speed of 30kt. The Daegu class is armed with one 127mm MK 45 MOD 4 naval gun and one Raytheon six-barrelled 20mm Phalanx close-in weapon system mounted on top of the aft superstructure. (Source: Jane’s)
