Description
Ultra Electronics, Communication & Integrated Systems (Ultra CIS) is one of the larger UK based Ultra businesses and is operationally run as four business units: Information Assurance, Secure Communications, EWST and Surveillance & Security Systems. These business units are underpinned by a shared services structure which incorporates finance, HR, operations and communications. Across Ultra CIS we provide encryption, network protection, automated payments, tactical and commercial communications and telemetry systems, covert and mobile surveillance systems and situational awareness technology to defence, public sector and commercial customers worldwide. To conduct System Engineering and Requirement Management activities to ensure products are designed to meet the requirements of our customers. Responsible for complex design and development tasks, typically working with two or three engineers within a larger team of up to ten people. The projects range from small (£100k) to large (£6m) with timescales from a few months to a few years. May have line management responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities:
Apply a variety of engineering methods and techniques; adapting these as necessary to create solutions to complex engineering problems.
Multi-task appropriately to ensure that more than one project’s needs are served at any one time.
Liaison with customers and external bodies as needed.
Accurately estimate the work of self and of others; identifies cost-effective solutions in terms of both development time and materials; delivers predictably and increases team’s ability to do the same.
Requires support rather than supervision, to perform effectively and only for more complex tasks.
Ensure work is of a suitable standard and appropriate by regularly seeking input from peers and manager as required.
Present proposals clearly and constructively debates input from others.
Provide a level of technical leadership within the team; shares knowledge willingly.
Provide specialist knowledge and support to the wider engineering team, ensuring that this knowledge is used to good effect.
Propose and champion ideas for improvement that support innovation.
Coach and mentor less experienced engineers on an informal basis.
Manage security of information as defined in the company security manual.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
Full understanding of the system engineering lifecycle and V-model. Ability to tailor processes for a particular project.
Presentation skills, able to contribute to design reviews and present material in complex system engineering concepts to a wide technical audience.
Extensive use of requirements management tools, Rational DOORS with
DXL, IBM Requisite Pro or similar tools.
Familiarity with commercial and military standards. Desirable to have an understanding of CESG processes and standards.
Skill in creating a system design to provide optimal solutions by
appropriately allocating functionality between hardware, firmware and software based on experience within one or more of those fields.
Ability to tailor requirements and design to ensure design for test and design for manufacture is considered.
Proficient in conducting high level systems design from system requirements and Usecases down to Activity diagrams.
Proficient in conducting low level systems design from Usecases & Activity diagrams to Sequence diagrams and state machines.
Ability to model and characterise systems behaviour using MATLAB, MathCad, C++ or similar applications to fully define HW, SW or FW soluti
