23 Jun 16. Navantia opens Australian design centre and employs former DMO chief. Spanish shipbuilder Navantia has announced the inauguration of a new operations and design centre in Adelaide and the appointment of former Australian Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO) chief executive Warren King as an adviser, as it targets the SEA 5000 Future Frigate programme. The inauguration of the centre was announced on 22 June. Navantia said in a statement, “The centre will constitute the core of the company’s engineering and design capabilities in [Australia]”. Navantia chairman Jose Manuel Revulta added that “Australia constitutes an absolute priority for this Spanish company”.
King stood down from the DMO in 2015. The organisation was abolished and its functions transferred to the new Department of Defence Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG). (Source: IHS Jane’s)

In a ceremony yesterday, Lockheed Martin celebrated the groundbreaking of the Hercules Training Center (HTC), a facility slated to open at the Lockheed Martin Aeronautics site here in 2018. The HTC will train the next generation of air mobility pilots and crews for the C-130J airlifter and LM-100J commercial freighter.
“Our shared investment in the Hercules Training Center continues years of strong partnership between Lockheed Martin Mission Systems and Training and Lockheed Martin Aeronautics to help equip pilots and aircrews worldwide to command the C-130 platform,” said Sandy Samuel, vice president, Training and Simulation Solutions. “We are thrilled to offer our customers even more value through integrated training solutions right here in Marietta where the aircraft is produced.”

The HTC will include classroom space, training devices and a new, reconfigurable C-130J/LM-100J full mission simulator.
21 Jun 16. StandardAero to set up F-35 military engine maintenance depot in Netherlands. The Netherlands’ Ministry of Defence (MOD) and StandardAero have agreed to establish a F-35 military engine maintenance depot at Woensdrecht Logistic Center, a Netherlands Air Force Base.
The company and the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) have signed a letter of intent (LOI), which will cover maintenance, repair, overhaul (MRO) and upgrade activities on F-35 engines.
StandardAero Military & Energy president Scott Starrett said: “This LOI marks the starting point of a common vision and goal for this very important partnership.
“Our international military services are aligned with all key constituents, including governments, OEMs and end users.
“We look forward to providing the world’s finest F-35 engine MRO capabilities from Woensdrecht Air Force Base.”
The proposed F-35 engine depot will be operated as a public-private partnership between the Netherlands and StandardAero through a government owned, company operated (GOCO) construct.
The Woensdrecht depot will become StandardAero’s second MRO operation in the Netherlands and will cater to the maintenance needs of the RNLAF, as well as other military operators worldwide.
It is one of only three F-35 engine depots in Europe, according to a statement posted on the company’s website.
