21 Mar 16. Rolls-Royce to deliver MT30 gas turbine for Italian Navy LHD. The Italian Navy has selected Rolls-Royce to deliver a MT30 marine turbine gas engine for installation on its new landing helicopter deck (LHD) multi-purpose amphibious vessel.
Being built as part of the country’s fleet renewal programme, the amphibious vessel will have a displacement of 20,000t, and will be incorporated with two MT30 gas turbines.
Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri has assumed the responsibility of building the vessel under the Legge Navale ‘Naval Law’, a major investment programme to renew the Italian naval fleet.
Rolls-Royce president Don Roussinos said: “We’re delighted the MT30, the most powerful marine gas turbine in operation today, has been selected for this prestigious ship. We are also very pleased that the MT30 has penetrated another new market, which is indicative of the confidence placed in the engine’s design and performance by Fincantieri.”
Modelled on Rolls Royce’s aero engine technology, the MT30 is a twin-spool, high-pressure ratio gas generator, with an eight-stage variable-geometry intermediate pressure compressor, and a six-stage high-pressure compressor.
The compact-sized and lightweight engine is modularly constructed to allow flexibility to the ship design process.
It can generate power levels of up to 36MW, catering to the requirement of high-power output in a compact space for naval propulsion.
Rolls-Royce MT30s are also incorporated on the UK Royal Navy’s Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales.
Additionally, the MT30 gas turbines are installed on US Navy warships, and have been selected for the Republic of Korea Navy’s frigate programme. (Source: naval-technology.com)

The UK Royal Navy (RN) has commissioned its third Astute-class nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN). HMS Artful joined the fleet in a ceremony at HM Naval Base Clyde, in Faslane, Scotland, on 18 March.
Admiral Sir George Zambellas, the RN’s first sea lord and chief of the Naval Staff, told the ceremony that the commissioning of the third 97 m, 7,400-tonne Astute-class boat “dramatically increases the operational capability” of the navy’s submarine flotilla.
In a press release, the navy said that the Astute class is “the largest, most advanced, and most powerful attack submarine ever operated by the Royal Navy, combining world-leading sensors, design, and weaponry in a versatile vessel.” (Source: IHS Jane’s)
