18 Dec 12. British Antarctic Territory: Queen Elizabeth Land. During a visit (18 Dec 12) to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office by HM The Queen, the Foreign Secretary announced that the Southern part of the British Antarctic Territory has been named Queen Elizabeth Land. The naming commemorates The Queen’s 60-year reign.
Comment: The previously unnamed Queen Elizabeth Land is around 169,000 square miles (437,000 square kilometres), nearly twice the size of the UK. The British Antarctic Territory was claimed by the UK in 1908 and designated as a separate Overseas Territory in 1962. Argentina has objected to the new naming as part of the UK’s “anachronistic imperialist ambitions”. British Antarctic Territory: Queen Elizabeth Land
