05 Jan 04. Mr Jaap de Hoop Scheffer is to assume his duties as Secretary-General of NATO on 5 Jan 04. On arrival at NATO Headquarters at 09.00hrs, the new Secretary-General is expected to be greeted by the Deputy Secretary-General, Ambassador Alessandro Minuto Rizzo. Comment: A breath of fresh air is anticipated. DR&A is advised that Jaap is pronounced ‘Yup’ and that the man’s full surname of de Hoop Scheffer should be used (and not shortened to ‘Scheffer’). 28 Dec 03. OP TELIC; Major General A R E de C Stewart CBE took over (28 Dec 03) as General Officer Commanding Multi-National Division (South East) (GOC MND(SE)) from Major General G C M Lamb CMG OBE. The FCO announced (31 Dec 03) that 24 volunteer Police Officers were being deployed to Basrah, to assist with the training of their Iraqi counterparts. A further 75 Police Officers were deploying to Jordan, where Iraqi Police recruits are being trained. In a BBC Radio 4 interview (1 Jan 04), the Defence Secretary indicated that British Forces would be in Iraq for a further year. (Source: DNA DEFENCE NEWS ANALYSIS Issue Issue 04/02, 5 Jan 0404).

19 Dec 03. Brig. Gen. Michael E. Ennis, United States Marine Corps, Director of Intelligence, Headquarters U.S. Marine Corps, Washington, D.C. to Director for operations, Defense Intelligence Agency, Washington, D.C., effective upon assumption.

23 Dec 03. U.S. Navy Rear Adm. (selectee) Albert M. Calland III for appointment to the grade of vice admiral and assignment as associate director of Central Intelligence for Military Support, Central Intelligence Agency, McLean, Va. Calland is currently serving as commander, Naval Special Warfare Command, Coronado, Calif.

06 Jan 04. The Boeing Company board of directors has elected James A. Bell as chief financial officer for the company. A 31-year veteran of the company, Bell has been Boeing’s acting CFO since Nov. 24, 2003.
