14 Feb 25. Saab launches last Gotland-class SSK after mid-life upgrade. Securing critical underwater infrastructure and sea lanes is more important than ever. Saab has launched the Swedish Navy’s third and final Gotland-class (A19) submarine, HMS Halland, at its shipyard in Karlskrona following the boat’s mid-life upgrade on 13 February 2025. The upgrade saw the replacement of more than 20 of the platform’s central systems, including sensors and command systems, besides a new range of technologies and components that will be used in the country’s two future Blekinge-class (A26) submarines. Halland will go on to servce in the Swedish Navy for many years to come with new capabilities, alongside her sister submarines HMS Gotland and HMS Uppland which have previously undergone similar mid-life modifications. Sweden’s three Gotland-class (A19) diesel-electric (SSK) submarines commissioned between 1996-7; with Halland having served almost 30 years. The submarines are fitted with four 533mm torpedo tubes and two 400mm torpedo tubes. The Bofors Underwater Systems Type 613 torpedoes are fired from the 533mm tubes. Type 613 is a heavy-weight, high-speed, anti-submarine and anti-surface torpedoes with a range of more than 40km and speed of more than 40 knots. The submarine is equipped with two MTU diesel engines and two Kockums V4-275R Stirling Air Independent Propulsion units. “Securing critical underwater infrastructure and sea lanes is more important than ever,” observed Mats Wicksel, head of Saab’s business area Kockums. 14 Feb 25. Damen launches new range naval logistics support ships. The LSS series is designed to enable sustained deployment and provide enhanced support in a cost-effective manner. Damen Shipyards Group has unveiled a new series of naval support vessels, the Logistics Support Ship (LSS), aimed at bolstering the logistical capabilities of naval forces. The LSS series is designed to extend the operational reach of navies by enabling sustained deployment and providing enhanced support in a cost-effective manner. The new range features two vessel types, the LSS 9000 and LSS 11000, measuring 127 metres (m) and 140m in length respectively. These vessels have dual functionality, providing logistic support and replenishment both at sea and when docked. Damen said that the ships come equipped with Nato-standard replenishment at sea systems, roll-on/roll-off capabilities, and significant cargo transport capacity. Additionally, they feature new navigation and communication systems for secure and efficient operations. The LSS series is designed to streamline the transfer and transportation of fuel, munitions, provisions, personnel, and other critical supplies. 21 Feb 25. DoD Probationary Workforce Statement. As the Secretary announced yesterday, the Department of Defense is re-evaluating our probationary workforce, consistent with the President’s initiative to reform the Federal workforce to maximize efficiency and productivity.
This re-evaluation of probationary employees is being done across government, not just at the Defense Department, but we believe in the goals of the program, and our leaders are carrying out that review carefully and smartly.
We anticipate reducing the Department’s civilian workforce by 5-8% to produce efficiencies and refocus the Department on the President’s priorities and restoring readiness in the force.
We expect approximately 5,400 probationary workers will be released beginning next week as part of this initial effort, after which we will implement a hiring freeze while we conduct a further analysis of our personnel needs, complying as always with all applicable laws.
As the Secretary made clear, it is simply not in the public interest to retain individuals whose contributions are not mission-critical. Taxpayers deserve to have us take a thorough look at our workforce top-to-bottom to see where we can eliminate redundancies.
As we take these important steps to reshape the workforce to meet the President’s priorities, the Department will treat our workers with dignity and respect as it always does. Those who commit themselves to defending our nation deserve nothing less.

This evening the President announced that he intends to nominate Lieutenant General Dan “Razin” Caine, USAF, for the position of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the nation’s highest-ranking military officer, and the principal military advisor to the President, Secretary of Defense, and National Security Council.
General Caine embodies the warfighter ethos and is exactly the leader we need to meet the moment. I look forward to working with him.
The outgoing Chairman, Gen. Charles “CQ” Brown, Jr., USAF, has served with distinction in a career spanning four decades of honorable service. I have come to know him as a thoughtful adviser and salute him for his distinguished service to our country.

20 Feb 25. HENSOLDT and Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB), an EDGE Group entity and regional leader in the design, construction, repair, maintenance, refit, and conversion of naval and commercial vessels, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore collaboration opportunities in the development of advanced naval technologies. 19 Feb 25. AMMROC and Marshall sign strategic service agreement to advance C-130 fleet readiness at IDEX 2025. Marshall and AMMROC, the Middle East’s leading provider of military maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) solutions, today signed a strategic service agreement outlining the first work package to be delivered within their new long-term strategic partnership. The announcement of this initial work package represents a major milestone for the partnership, which aims to advance C-130 fleet maintenance and operational readiness by upgrading and modernising aircraft, enhancing their operational capabilities and extending their service life. 19 Feb 25. QinetiQ announces expansion of Team TECSA with new industry partners. QinetiQ’s Team TECSA, a collaboration between Australian industry and academia focused on advancing Australia’s sovereign defence capabilities in Test and Evaluation, Certification and Systems Assurance (TECSA), has welcomed three new members. The addition of BosTECK, DEWC Services, and Mercury Information Security Services enhances Team TECSA’s expertise in key areas. BosTECK brings specialist knowledge in explosive ordnance and safety assurance, DEWC Services contributes extensive experience in electronic warfare and intelligence, while Mercury Information Security Services strengthens cyber security and information assurance capabilities. These new partnerships further bolster Team TECSA’s ability to support Defence across multiple warfare domains.
