19 Dec 24. Digital job opportunities at Dstl. Help maintain and improve the digital services and infrastructure that enable Dstl’s vital science and technology work for UK defence and security.

The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) is the Ministry of Defence’s science and technology organisation, providing specialist solutions and advice to help find and fix problems for UK defence and security.

We are currently recruiting key roles in our digital team to help us meet some of the unique and exciting challenges of our work.

The team

You will join a team of digital professionals and work with team leaders who understand the importance of investing in talent. They also ensure skills and resource match the delivery needs. The team are expected to:

What our digital team do

Our digital team is the centralised IT service for Dstl. The team provide essential support for all users including finance, HR and commercial, and our science and technology business areas.

The team deal with high volumes of service requests on a daily basis – approximately 45,000 a year!

These requests can be for new services or changes to existing ones.

The digital team also maintain and continuously improve the foundation infrastructure that all our digital services stem from.

If you want something new to get involved with, there are usually about 50 projects going on!

EUROPE APPOINTMENTS

 

20 Dec 24. Lord Peter Mandelson, former Labour cabinet minister and EU commissioner, is to become Britain’s next ambassador to Washington, with an immediate mission to avert a trade war with Donald Trump. Mandelson will take up the post next month, according to UK government officials, in the latest appointment by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer of a veteran heavy-hitter from the Tony Blair era. Starmer picked Mandelson to succeed Dame Karen Pierce, who has served in Washington since 2020 and is known as “the Trump whisperer” for her close contacts with the incoming US president and his team. 20 Dec 24. Mr Angus McKee OBE has been appointed His Majesty’s Ambassador to the Republic of Mali in succession to Ms Katharine Ransome. Mr McKee will take up his appointment during January 2025.

23 Dec 24. Australia announced the latest appointments to the Australian Naval Infrastructure (ANI) board.

The Albanese government is pleased to announce the appointment of the following directors to the Australian Naval Infrastructure (ANI) board:

  • Ronald Finlay AM as chair, for a three-year term commencing 11 December 2024.
  • Major General Kathryn Toohey AM CSC (Ret’d) as a non-executive director, for a three-year term starting 11 December 2024.
  • Andrea Hall as a non-executive director, for a three-year term beginning 14 February 2025.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles congratulated the new board chair on his appointment, saying: “I congratulate Mr Finlay on his appointment as chair to the ANI board. His extensive experience in major construction and engineering projects and as a board chair, coupled with his past role advising the Australian government on naval shipbuilding projects, will stand ANI in good stead for the future.”

Finlay brings over 40 years of experience in major construction and engineering projects, including numerous high-profile Defence initiatives. He previously served on both the Australian Naval Shipbuilding Advisory Board and the Naval Shipbuilding Expert Advisory Panel. (Source: Defence Connect)

 

27 Dec 24. New SAAF Deputy Chief. Come Wednesday 1 January Major General Lancelot Mathebula will add the post of SA Air Force (SAAF) Deputy Chief to his current duties as project leader of the fledgling SA National Defence Force (SANDF) Space Command. The two-star is a 24-year veteran in the blue uniform qualifying as an officer in the same year – 2000 – he joined. Mathebula earned his wings in December 2002 and, according to a CV provided by the SANDF Directorate Corporate Communication (DCC), has logged 1 800 plus flying hours and is pilot attack instructor (PAI) rated. His hours come from cockpit time while serving in the SAAF Directorate Combat Systems where he piloted PC-7 Mk II, Impala Mk I and II, Hawk Mk 120 and Gripen aircraft. His CV includes a two-year stint as Officer Commanding (OC) “fighter town” – Air Force Base (AFB) Makhado – home to 2 Squadron (Gripen) and the Hawk 120s of 85 Combat Flying School (CFS). He was transferred from the Limpopo base to SAAF Headquarters in Pretoria in March 2023 as Chief Director Force Preparation. (Source: https://www.defenceweb.co.za/
