11 Nov 24. Following Excelitas Technologies’ acquisition of Noblelight® from Heraeus in January 2024, Excelitas is moving swiftly to optimize operations and efficiencies. By the end of 2027, the four production facilities dedicated to the development and manufacturing of Noblelight products currently located in the Rhine-Main region of Germany, will be consolidated into a single expanded site in the same region. Excelitas expects to invest more than 20 m US dollars in this initiative with the objective of improving operational efficiency. Excelitas currently produces Noblelight products including UV LEDs and lamps, analytical light sources, and infrared emitters and systems within four facilities outside of Frankfurt, Germany. This new location will be the center for specialty lamp-based lighting and will include operations, R&D and administration.

12 Nov 24. Bell Textron Inc., a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, announced today the completion of a major expansion to its Huntsville Office in Huntsville, Alabama. The expanded facility will enable Bell to provide briefing and conference space for its customers and the company. When Bell initially opened the Huntsville Office in 2018, the team envisioned the state-of-the-art facility would serve as a space to showcase its innovative vertical lift solutions that inspire customers and government lawmakers to pursue next-generation capabilities. Six years after opening the facility’s doors, Bell has decided to further its investment and expand the office to keep pace with growing priorities.
“Bell has come a long way since we initially opened the office here in Huntsville,” said Jeffrey Schloesser, executive vice president, strategic pursuits. “In the last few years, Bell has been selected to deliver the U.S. Army’s Future Long Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) to the nation’s warfighters, and we continue to expand our vertical lift solutions across our portfolio. The team in Huntsville played a key role in the earlier stages of the FLRAA competition with a focus on building strong support in the region for military modernization and Future Vertical Lift objectives. As the U.S. Army and Bell continue to move forward with FLRAA, the Huntsville team will bolster support for the program and aid in efforts to educate the U.S. Army, Joint Forces and lawmakers on the capabilities offered by tiltrotor technology.

12 Nov 24. IDF Unveils Advanced Submarine INS Drakon. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) unveiled its most advanced submarine to date, the INS Drakon, during a ceremony held in Kiel, Germany, on Tuesday. This state-of-the-art vessel boasts cutting-edge weaponry, intelligence systems, and specialized capabilities for supporting commando missions. The INS Drakon is the sixth and latest addition to Israel’s Dolphin 2-class submarine fleet. These submarines are believed to be capable of launching nuclear-tipped cruise missiles, providing Israel with a crucial “second-strike capability.”
Initially, the new submarine was set to be named “Dakar” after an Israeli submarine that tragically sank in 1968, but the decision was changed following objections from the families of the Dakar’s lost crew members. The name “Drakon” was chosen as a compromise, reflecting the letters of Dakar in Hebrew and symbolically honoring the original vessel’s memory. 10 Nov 24. India donates two fast interceptor vessels to Mozambique. As part of capacity-building with friendly nations in the Indian Ocean Region, India has donated two fast interceptor vessels to Mozambique during a ceremony in the port city of Nacala. The vessels were formally handed over on 8 November after being delivered by the Magar class amphibious warfare vessel INS Gharial. India’s Press Information Bureau reported the ceremony was attended by the High Commissioner of India in Mozambique, Robert Shetkintong, India’s newly appointed Defence Adviser at Maputo, Colonel Puneet Attri, and the Commanding Officer of INS Gharial, Commander Rajan Chib. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of National Defence, Augusto Casimiro Mueio, formally accepted the vessels on behalf of the Government of Mozambique.
The Solas Marine water-jet-propelled boats have a top speed of 45 knots and a range of 200 nautical miles at 12 knots. They can carry a crew of five personnel and are equipped with machineguns and bullet-resistant cabins. The two vessels will significantly aid the Government of Mozambique in its effort to combat maritime terrorism and ongoing insurgency in the Cabo Delgado province, the Indian government said.
Earlier, to bolster Mozambique’s maritime security capabilities, India gifted two 30 metre long Larsen & Toubro interceptors (named Namiliti and Umbeluzi) in July 2019, followed in January 2022 by two fast interceptor craft of the same class as presently delivered (16 metre Solas Marine vessels).
On-job training on operating and maintaining the Indian-gifted vessels is also provided by the resident Indian Coast Guard Afloat Support Team at Maputo. The interceptor vessels gifted by India have played a pivotal role since 2019 in anti-insurgency operations, maritime patrol and interdiction, and logistics support missions, the Indian government added.
“The Indian Navy has been collaborating with several friendly littorals of the Indian Ocean Region to equip and train their maritime security forces to counter maritime security challenges like piracy, drug and human trafficking, Illegal Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, maritime terrorism, etc. The Indian Navy has also been the first responder to provide Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) support to several nations in the region during natural calamities and other contingencies like the COVID-19 pandemic,” the Indian government said.
“India and Mozambique share a robust strategic partnership that has grown even stronger with each passing year in multiple realms. India is thus fully committed to helping and supporting its maritime neighbours in the Indian Ocean Region in line with the vision of Security and Growth for all in the region (SAGAR) advocated by the Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.”
In March 2019, Indian Naval Ships Sujata and Shardul and Indian Coast Guard Ship Sarathi were diverted from their deployment to assist Mozambique when Cyclone Idai struck the Sofala province. Over a period of two weeks, the ships rescued more than 200 civilians, provided emergency medical treatment to over 2 300 people and supplied 10 tonnes of food material by boats and helicopter to flood-affected areas.
In March 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, India donated 100 000 doses and supplied over one m doses of the COVISHIELD vaccine to Mozambique under the COVAX programme.
India has provided training opportunities for the Mozambique Armed Forces in various professional institutions of the Indian Armed Forces. India also gifted an Infantry Weapons Training Simulator to Mozambique in November last year to be installed at the Army Practicing School Manhica, near Maputo.
Another sign of India-Mozambique cooperation came in April this year when the two nations held the inaugural India-Mozambique Defence Industrial Interaction in Maputo. The High Commission of India in Mozambique said the first edition of this event gave an opportunity for government and private defence companies from India to come together with officials from the Ministries of Defence, Mozambican military (FADM) and Mozambican civil security agencies to discuss cooperation in defence production and procurement.
India has been cultivating good relations with Mozambique and other African nations for some time, notably taking part in the second Tri-Lateral Exercise (Trilat) in March 2024 with the Mozambican and Tanzanian navies. India this year sent two naval vessels, the cadet training ship INS Tir (A86) and the Sukanya-class patrol ship INS Sujata (P56), for the exercise, which was held from 21 to 29 March with the aim of strengthening cooperation between India, Mozambique, and Tanzania.
The first edition of the India-Mozambique-Tanzania (IMT) Trilat exercise was conducted in October 2022, with the participation of the frigate INS Tarkash (F50) exercising with the Tanzanian and Mozambique Navies.
Previously, Indian Naval Ships Sujata, Sunayna and Sumedha undertook joint exclusive economic zone surveillance missions with the Mozambique Navy to strengthen maritime security in the region and undertook harbour and sea training for Mozambique Navy personnel.

Boeing said on Wednesday it is issuing layoff notices starting this week to workers impacted by a broader plan by the heavily indebted planemaker to cut 17,000 jobs, or 10% of its global workforce. U.S. staff receiving the notices this week will stay on Boeing’s payroll until January to comply with federal requirements that give workers 60 days’ notice prior to ending their employment. News that Boeing would send out the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) in mid-November was widely expected.
“As previously announced, we are adjusting our workforce levels to align with our financial reality and a more focused set of priorities,” Boeing said in a statement. “We are committed to ensuring our employees have support during this challenging time.” The notices come as Boeing under new CEO Kelly Ortberg is trying to revive production of its strongest-selling 737 MAX. The U.S. Air Force said that it would retire its A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft in key regions including South Korea by the fiscal year 2025 in favour of advancing fourth-generation fighter jet upgrades. Space not-for-profit firm leads the way in debunking myths around industry inaccessibility and bringing the fast-growing commercial space sector to brand new audiences. Company intends to act as a gateway into the UK industry, following UK Space Agency support. A company seeking to attract talent from a multitude of technical and non-technical disciplines has today launched a new initiative to grow awareness of the exciting career opportunities within the UK space sector. SpaceCareers.uk has received support from the UK Space Agency’s Space for All fund to spearhead an initiative named ‘UK Space 101’, focused on showcasing the accessibility of space jobs to school students, as well as highlighting the need for a diverse range of skills from people currently working outside of the space sector. The team, managed by a young group of space enthusiasts, launched its services on the same day in 2015 that astronaut Tim Peake blasted off to the International Space Station.
According to the Size and Health of the UK Space Industry report published during the Farnborough Airshow this year, there is currently a workforce of more than 50,000 supporting around 1,800 space companies active across the United Kingdom, representing an £18.9bn contribution to the economy. With a National Space Strategy in place since 2021 and strong desire from across the country to capitalise on the fast-growing global space economy, non-profit SpaceCareers.uk is positioning itself as a gateway into the industry. The company’s mission is to highlight the range of jobs available, and to provide support to both candidates looking for a job and employers seeking diverse talent.

U.S. APPOINTMENTS
14 Nov 24. Boeing said on Thursday it hired former Northrop Grumman executive Colin Miller to head its Phantom Works research arm within the company’s defense business unit. Miller’s hiring as general manager of Phantom Works at Boeing Defense, Space and Security (BDS) had been in the works before the arrival of new Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg. Boeing’s defense business has been struggling under the weight of budget-busting older contracts, but Ortberg said in October that the unit which makes helicopters, fighter jets and missiles remains “core” to the company’s future. 14 Nov 24. Curtiss-Wright Corporation (NYSE: CW) today announced that Paul J. Ferdenzi, Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, plans to retire after a distinguished 25-year career with the Company. Mr. Ferdenzi will continue to serve as a Vice President of the Company to assist the Executive Team with the transition until his retirement at the end of this year. As part of its formal succession plan, the Board of Directors announced that, effective immediately, George P. McDonald has been promoted to Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, and has been named an officer of the Company. Mr. McDonald has served as the Company’s Deputy General Counsel since May 2024 and previously as Associate General Counsel since 1999. In his new role, Mr. McDonald will report directly to Lynn M. Bamford, Chair and Chief Executive Officer.
