08 Aug 24. New BAE Shipbuilding Facility. The vast new ship build hall that will transform shipbuilding in Glasgow has officially been named the Janet Harvey Hall, after one of the many women who took on industrial jobs when the country needed them most during the Second World War.
In 1940, at the age of 18, Janet Harvey joined the workforce to help the war effort as an electrician in the River Clyde’s shipyards. Janet played a crucial role in the UK’s war effort and was one of just a handful of women working as electricians alongside the 100,000 strong male workforce.
At the age of 96, Janet was awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Engineering from Glasgow Caledonian University in recognition of her outstanding contribution to Glasgow’s shipyards during the war.
Poignantly, Janet died on Armistice Day (11 November) in 2023 at the age of 101.
The Janet Harvey Hall is currently under construction at BAE Systems’ site in Govan. Naming the hall after Janet not only honours her contribution, but also the efforts of all the women who stepped up and became electricians, welders, engineers and platers when the call came. The hall is a key element of the £300m transformation of BAE Systems’ shipbuilding facilities in Glasgow. Once complete, this vast facility will be large enough for two Type 26 frigates to be constructed side-by-side. It will consist of more than 6,000 tonnes of steel and 20,000m3 of concrete. Once complete, the hall will help enable efficient and safe shipbuilding for decades to come with future work unaffected by adverse weather. With two 100-tonne cranes and two 20-tonne cranes, the facility is designed to accommodate up to 500 workers per shift.

Aunique sub-variant of the Ohio-class guided missile submarines, the converted nuclear-powered ballistic missile boat USS Florida, returned at the end of July 2024, to base at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Georgia, following a 727-day deployment to 5th, 6th, and 7th Fleet areas of operations.
Due to their payload of Tomahawk cruise missiles, rather than the Trident II D5 ballistic missile, the four converted sub-variant boats of the Ohio-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBN) have been designed as nuclear-powered guided missile submarines (SSGN).
During the near two-year mission, which saw five crew rotations carried out, the USS Florida conducted “vital missions” that were deemed “crucial to national security”, the US Navy stated in an early August release.
In total the boat travelled more than 60,000 nautical miles, with various crews visiting Greece, Guam, Diego Garcia, and the UK, as part of routine port calls. In November 2023, the US Department of Defense confirmed that an Ohio-class submarine was active in the 5th Fleet area of operations, amid the early actions of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.
Ohio-class SSGN sub-variant on the way out
The four converted SSGNs of the Ohio class, the oldest of the series, the USS Ohio, Michigan, Florida, and Georgia, which were refitted into their new configuration from the early 2000s onwards. The 14 remaining Ohio-class SSBNs will gradually be replaced by 12 Columbia-class SSBNs from 2031.
The Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics based at Groton, Connecticut, built 18 Ohio submarines commissioned between 1981 and 1997.
According to the requirements of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, START II, which was agreed in June 1992, the number of strategic missile submarines was limited to 14 from 2002. Rather than decommissioning these four submarines, the US Navy converted them to the SSGN configuration.
In September 2002, Electric Boat received a contract for the conversion of USS Ohio, Michigan, Florida, and Georgia, which were refitted to accommodate up to 154 Tomahawk TLAM (land attack) or Tactical Tomahawk (Block IV) missiles, while also being capable of conducting special operations missions.
In many respects, the SSGNs perform similar functions to the Los Angeles-class nuclear powered attack submarines (SSN), although their performance characteristics, while classified, will be significantly different. They are able to embark a much larger number of munitions compared to the Los Angeles-class.
However, according to the US Navy’s latest shipbuilding plan, all four SSGNs will be retired from service by 2028, with no direct replacement, with two boats (USS Ohio and USS Florida) to be decommissioned in 2026.
Given this, and the length of the deployment just undertaken, the USS Florida could well have concluded its operational service with the US Navy. (Source: naval-technology.com)
05 Aug 24. New class of Russian missile boat launched at Vympel Shipyard. Stupinets, the first of a new class of missile boat for the Russian Navy, was launched at Vympel Shipyard in Rybinsk on 31 July, according to local media reports.
Originally laid down in 1992, Stupinets is one of two vessels initially intended to be exported as Tarantul III-class missile boats. However, Russia was unable to find a buyer for the ships and work was halted.
In April 2016 Vympel signed a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defence to complete the ship for the Russian Navy, albeit with some significant changes to the design.
As completed, Stupinets features a completely different superstructure to the Tarantul III, as well as an updated weapons and sensor fit. This includes removing the four SS-N-22 ‘Sunburn’ (3M80 Moskit) missiles mounted to port and starboard of the superstructure on a Tarantul III and replacing them with eight SS-N-25 ‘Switchblade’ (3M24 Uran) launchers mounted athwartships aft of the main superstructure.
The other main change from the Tarantul III is in the powerplant, which swaps the all gas turbine or combined gas turbine and diesel set up of the earlier class for an all diesel arrangement consisting of two Zvezda M507s. Zvezda is only able to produce these engines in very small numbers, and they are in demand for other programmes as well such as the Uragan-class corvettes, so this is likely to be one reason why it has taken eight years to get to the point where Stupinets can be launched.

05 Aug 24. Turkish Hürjet jet trainer aircraft expected to debut in Egypt
Manufacturer TAI states that the Hürjet features an advanced mission computer and modern cockpit, equipped with a human machine interface to minimise conversion time to current and future Turkish fighter aircraft.
Turkish Aerospace (TAI) has opted to showcase the Hürjet jet training aircraft at the forthcoming Egypt International Airshow (EIAS) 2024 to the Egyptian Air Force and other militaries from Africa and the Middle East.
Designed by TAI as a single-engine, tandem-seat aircraft for modern pilot training, the Hürjet is intended to replace the ageing T-38s as advanced jet trainers (AJT) and F-5s as acrobatic team aircraft for the Turkish Air Force.
TAI states that the platform is an “attractive option” for air forces looking to modernise their fleets with “cost-effective and high performance” AJTs.

Due to run from 3-5 September 2024 at El Alamein International Airport, EIAS is likely to draw significant interest from emerging industry from countries such as Türkiye and South Korea keen to open new markets in developing regions.

Manufacturer TAI states that the Hürjet features an advanced mission computer and modern cockpit, equipped with a human machine interface to minimise conversion time to current and future Turkish fighter aircraft.
The Hürjet measures 45ft in length, with a wingspan of 30ft and a payload capacity of 2,700kg. On its inaugural test flight on 25 April 2024, the HÜRJET AJT achieved an altitude of 14,000ft and a speed of 250 knots, staying airborne for 26 minutes.

02 Aug 24. Successfully Performed the First Ground Run Test of the NGCTR’s Technology Demonstrator. At Leonardo’s Cascina Costa (Varese, Italy) site, the first ground run, with rotor testing, of the Next Generation Civil Tiltrotor (NGCTR) Technology Demonstrator (TD) took place. The next phase of the programme involves intensive testing in the coming months, with the aim of performing the first flight by the end of 2024 and then accumulating 200 flight hours to expand operational capabilities in helicopter and aircraft modes.
NGCTR’s Technology Demonstrator was built by Leonardo with the aim to design, develop and demonstrate in flight innovative tiltrotor technologies, paving the way for future product developments.
Using the AW609 fuselage, the NGCTR-TD incorporates technologies adaptable to possible future programmes and to industry development. These include an advanced wing architecture; an optimized V-Tail configuration that reduces trim drag; a non-tilting engine set-up, with a split gearbox, thus allowing a wider selection of engines and the avoidance of ground hot gas impingement and ground noise reduction; an advanced Fly-by-Wire Control that employs a modular, distributed, and scalable Flight Control System. Furthermore, an efficient nacelle architecture which minimises drag and improve control and reduces flapping in VTOL mode by a differential control of nacelle tilting.

Since its conception, the project has been driven by the need to develop technologies for cleaner skies within the VTOL (Vertical Take Off and Landing) domain. Cruising up to 280 kts – which is twice the speed of typical helicopters and closer to turboprop aircraft speeds – the NGTR-TD has reduced Co² emissions and noise, when compared with conventional helicopters of the same class.
Leonardo’s NGCTR Technology Demonstrator began life in 2015 as part of the part of Clean Sky 2, an EU-funded Initiative for the development and validation of aeronautical technologies that will improve environmental impact and enhance the European aerospace supply chain. After a first design and development phase, characterised by a System Engineering Technical Review process, assembly was completed in June 2024.
As Massimo Biggi, Next Generation Fast Rotorcraft Programs Manager at Leonardo Helicopters, explained, “the NGCTR-TD, the first clean-sheet European tiltrotor concept design in years, has enabled Leonardo to develop and test the core technologies needed to flight test a next generation high speed aircraft with long range and vertical take-off and landing capabilities.”
This initiative, part of the Clean Sky 2 project, is one of the key projects of the Leonardo’s Sustainability Plan. It is an important example of advanced mobility technologies combining improved performances and lower emissions, with a positive impact on citizen’s security.

05 Aug 24. Boeing [NYSE: BA] has delivered the first MH-139A Grey Wolf production aircraft to the U.S. Air Force. This aircraft, part of a Low Rate Initial Production order in 2023 for 13 helicopters, will be stationed at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana.
“This aircraft will directly support ongoing U.S. Air Force modernization efforts,” said Azeem Khan, MH-139 executive director and program manager. “Delivering this asset for the MH-139A fleet is critical to the future of national security as the Grey Wolf will play a crucial role in the U.S. nuclear triad for decades to come.”
In 2024, the U.S. Air Force awarded an additional seven MH-139As to Boeing. With six Research, Development, Test and Evaluation aircraft already delivered, Boeing currently has 26 aircraft on contract.
With a 50% increase in speed and range and a 5,000 pound-lb. increase in max gross weight compared it is predecessor, the MH-139A can execute multiple mission sets. Combined with lower operating costs, increased reliability and improved maintainability, the aircraft provides improved capability and greater flexibility for the U.S. Air Force.
The MH-139A team consists of Boeing as the prime contractor and Leonardo as an original equipment manufacturer. Leonardo produces the baseline helicopter at its plant in northeast Philadelphia, while Boeing is responsible for military equipment procurement and installation and post-delivery support of the aircraft.

08 Aug 24. Germany retires Sea King helicopter. Germany has retired its Westland Sea King Mk 41 helicopters after nearly 50 years of service.
The last example was flown to the Bundeswehr’s Militärhistorisches Museum in Gatow, Berlin, on 8 August, bringing an end to a service career that began in 1975.
“We say thank you Sea King for around 50 years in the force. With the end of flight operations at the Luftwaffe, a chapter of helicopter history is over. Goodbye, King!” the Bundeswher said from its official X (formerly Twitter) account.
Operated by the German Navy, the Sea King has been replaced in favour of the NHIndustries NH90 Sea Lion. At the time of retirement, Janes World Navies listed the Marineflieger aviation branch of the service as having 21 Sea Kings remaining in its inventory.
News of the retirement came weeks after Germany pledged to send six Sea King helicopters to Ukraine, where they will serve alongside three former UK Royal Navy (and latterly HeliOps) Sea Kings already being flown.

In a development for the US Navy, the US Department of Defense has awarded Huntington Ingalls Inc., based in Newport News, Virginia, a contract modification valued at $11.7m. The contract focuses on additional support for pre-advanced planning related to the defuelling and inactivation of the USS Nimitz (CVN 68), the first Nimitz-class aircraft carrier.
The USS Nimitz, commissioned in 1975, has played a part in US naval power for nearly five decades. As the Navy’s oldest active aircraft carrier, it has played a role in various military operations. The deactivation of this vessel marks a moment as it will be the first of the ten Nimitz-class carriers to be retired.
The end of the acquisition period for the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier was in 2009, as per GlobalData’s intelligence on the US defence market.
HII is tackling projects for the US Navy’s Nimitz-class aircraft carriers. HII recently secured a $913m contract for the Refuelling and Complex Overhaul (RCOH) of the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), modernising the carrier and extending its service life by several decades. This follows ongoing progress on the USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74), which, despite setbacks, continues its RCOH to ensure operational readiness for the future.
The initial phase of Nimitz’s deactivation will be at Huntington Ingalls’ Newport News Shipbuilding facility in Virginia, where the ship was originally constructed. The contract stipulates that this planning and preparation work will be completed by November 2024, with the actual decommissioning of the USS Nimitz expected to occur in 2026.
The Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, DC, is overseeing the contracting activity.
Over the course of its service, the Nimitz has been involved in various conflicts and humanitarian missions, providing a platform for naval aviation.
On July 20, 2020, the US Navy’s USS Nimitz (CVN 68) and its Carrier Strike Group conducted a passing exercise (Passex) with the Indian Navy off the coast of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
This contract is just the beginning of a multi-year effort to safely defuel, deactivate, and eventually dismantle the ship, ensuring it is done in accordance with environmental and safety regulations.

04 Aug 24. The Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) has formally lodged a disagreement with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) over changes to the Position Mapping Procedure. The dispute has led to the MoD temporarily withdrawing the new policy changes until the matter is resolved.
The MoD civil service HR department has been engaged in a “policy simplification process” aimed at making policies easier to understand.
The department had assured that members’ entitlements and substantive policies would remain unchanged. However, PCS has identified several detrimental changes in the post mapping policy.
The contested changes include:
- Removal of the second stage appeal
- Elimination of the option for Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to attend and advise post mapping panels
- Modifications to the posts included in limited competition
- Implications on priority mover status and potential risk of redundancy
PCS, along with other unions within the MoD civil service (MCSU), filed a formal disagreement, prompting the MoD to withdraw the new policy changes to maintain the status quo as outlined in the formal disagreement policy.
PCS has advised its members and activists to verify which policy is being applied to live post-mapping and ensure adherence to the previous policy. The employer may need to withdraw any post-mapping letters issued under the disputed policy.
PCS is scheduled to meet with the MoD next week to discuss and resolve these issues.

06 Aug 24. AMD names new leadership, still seeking a chairperson. SA Aerospace, Maritime and Defence Industries Association.
South Africa’s representative organisation for the defence industry – widely known by the acronym AMD – is leaderless following a delayed annual general meeting (AGM).
This is expected to be short-lived and will not impact on the work of the SA Aerospace, Maritime and Defence Industries Association, its sixth newsletter of 2024 has it.
The AGM was set down for 13 June but put on hold while post-election negotiations were underway. At that time AMD Executive Director and SAAMDEC (SA Aerospace Maritime and Defence Export Council) Chief Executive Officer Sandile Ndlovu was on record as saying the delay would be “prudent”. This would, according to him, “allow the political dust to settle and we have a government in place”.
On the current lack of a chairperson, the newsletter has it: “we [AMD] are actively engaged in the process of identifying and appointing a suitable candidate to fill this important role. Updates will be communicated as soon as they are available”.
At the AGM Nico Troostheide of GAC Laser was voted in as Vice Chairperson with TMI Simulation Solutions’ Thivash Moodley Honorary Treasurer and Ratilal Rowji from Global Command and Control Technologies (GC²T) Honorary Secretary.
The AGM saw nine AMD directors named to chair working committees to “drive various strategic initiatives crucial to our industry’s success,” the newsletter has it.
Incomar’s Riaz Saloojee heads the AMD Policy and Strategy committee with Sicelo Ngubane (MN Group) chairing its DIP (Defence Industrial Participation) and NIP (National Industrial Participation) sub-committee. Retsibile Sekhukhune chairs the SMME (small, medium, and micro enterprises), BEE (Black Economic Empowerment) and Skills Development sub-committee component of the policy and strategic committee.
