(NYSE:LMT – news) has been awarded a $2.4bn contract to produce 13 more F-22 Raptor fighters designed to be the world’s top air-to-air combat aircraft, the Air Force said Thursday.The 13 are the second batch ordered under a low-rate initial production plan. Ultimately, the Pentagon plans to spend about $45bn for 333 of the radar-evading aircraft, which would replace the F-15 that entered the Air Force inventory in 1975.Lockheed is teamed with Boeing Co. (NYSE:BA – news) to build the F-22. The Air Force said Lockheed, the prime contractor, would handle two-thirds of the new order at its facilities in Marietta, Georgia, and Fort Worth, Texas. Boeing would handle its third in Seattle, the Air Force said.
