12 Sep 25. GCAP Consortium Expands Partnership Toward First Flight. The international consortium comprised of Rolls-Royce (UK), Avio Aero (Italy) and IHI (Japan) today announced a major expansion of their partnership to accelerate development of the power and propulsion system for the next-generation fighter aircraft being developed through the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP).

This step represents the transition from national contracting to fully integrated international collaboration, laying the foundation for the detailed design and development of GCAP’s all-new fighter engine. This development builds on the successful progress of the all-new centreline GCAP engine demonstrator. The three companies signed an evolved collaboration agreement that allows them to engage directly with Edgewing – the newly formed joint venture between BAE Systems, Leonardo and JAIEC of Japan.

As a consortium, Rolls-Royce, Avio Aero and IHI are transforming how they work to enable continued innovation and advance combat air propulsion technology to meet the timeline for GCAP’s first flight.

The partners are delivering progress on the engine demonstrator, advancing technologies in additive manufacturing, cooling systems and high-pressure compressor design, and more. The engineering teams of the three consortium partners have already conducted several trilateral reviews to approve the engine demonstrator design, following the completion of joint design iterations and have initiated the hardware procurement.”

Among the recent milestones was a successful test of a revolutionary combustor developed with enhanced Additive Layer Manufacturing techniques to create unique geometric cooling pathways. The next-generation advanced cooling and material technologies enable higher operating temperatures for the turbine while allowing components to run cooler for extended range to enhance durability and sustainability across the engine’s service life.

Together, the three companies form the propulsion consortium at the heart of GCAP, driving innovation and industrial collaboration across three nations to deliver the fighter engine of the future.

11 Sep 25. UK industry confirmed for 37% share of new Typhoon builds. Defence Minister Luke Pollard has confirmed that Britain will manufacture a large share of the components for the Typhoon aircraft expected to be ordered by both Germany and Italy. Responding to written parliamentary questions from Ben Obese-Jecty MP on 9 September, Pollard detailed how the United Kingdom’s industrial base is guaranteed a 37% workshare in the Eurofighter programme.

Pollard explained that “it is the NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency who set the industrial sub-system production and workshare agreements across the partner nations. Through partner nation agreement, NETMA have set United Kingdom industrial workshare as 37%.”

He added that Eurofighter GmbH manages subsystem and component manufacturing orders across the industrial base of each partner nation in line with that agreement.

The workshare guarantees the UK a leading role in producing several of the most complex and critical sections of the Typhoon airframe and systems.

According to Pollard, “some of the major components that UK leads on the manufacturing include the front and rear fuselage, windscreen and canopy, fin and rudder, engine bay doors, foreplane and a range of major avionics systems.”

This applies equally to the Typhoons set to be procured by Germany and those ordered by Italy. In both cases, UK factories and suppliers will remain central to the production line, with British industry responsible for key structural assemblies and avionics integration. 10 Sep 25. Denmark to buy $9bn air defence systems as tensions with Russia grow. Denmark plans to buy European-made air defence systems for 58bn Danish crowns ($9.11bn), its largest arms purchase ever, the country’s defence minister said on Friday, citing a challenging security situation.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in February ordered the military to “buy buy buy” equipment in preparation for potential future Russian aggression in Europe.

Denmark plans to procure eight systems, including the long-range SAMP/T platform produced by Eurosam, a consortium of MBDA France, MBDA Italy and Thales, as well as medium-range systems manufactured by Norway, Germany or France.

“There is no doubt that the security situation is challenged,” Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen told reporters on Friday.

“We have seen how Russia has violated Polish airspace with several drones… It is a reminder to all of us about the importance of strengthening our combat power,” he added.

Poland shot down suspected Russian drones in its airspace on Wednesday with the backing of aircraft from its NATO allies, the first time a member of the Western military alliance is known to have fired shots during Russia’s war in Ukraine.

12 Sep 25. Pentagon starts process of finding Golden Dome contractors. The Pentagon’s Missile Defense Agency has begun the process of doling out contracts for President Donald Trump’s marquee Golden Dome missile defense shield, according to a solicitation notice posted on Wednesday. Golden Dome’s ambitions mirror those of Israel’s Iron Dome – a homeland missile defense shield – but a larger, more complex layered defense system requires a vast network of orbiting satellites covering more territory. The Multiple Award Scalable Homeland Innovative Enterprise Layered Defense (SHIELD) contract represents a 10-year, $151bn indefinite delivery vehicle designed to rapidly deploy new defense capabilities to protect “United States homeland, its deployed forces, allies, and friends” against ballistic, hypersonic and cruise missile threats. Proposal submissions are due on October 10, according to a government bulletin published Wednesday afternoon. 09 Sep 25. US Army launches FALCONS programme. The US Army has launched its Future Advanced Long-range Common Optical/Netted-fires Sensor (FALCONS) programme, which once mature will replace the ground service’s legacy Long Range Advanced Scout Surveillance System (LRAS3), service officials said in August. Programme officials from the army’s Product Manager Ground Sensors (PM GS), which is spearheading the development effort, signed three separate Other Transaction Authority (OTA) agreements in August for Phase 0 work on the FALCONS initiative, according to the officials. Phase 0 work will consist of research and development efforts to construct viable prototypes of the FALCONS system, the officials said in a statement at the time. Each OTA industry partner, which includes Leonardo DRS, Elbit Systems of America, and QinetiQ, will receive USD2 m as part of the Phase 0 FALCONS prototype contract, which is anticipated to last for 12 months, programme officials said in the statement. The entire FALCONS development effort is expected to progress across four separate phases, with OTA awards being issued for each phase. The entire prototype development initiative is scheduled to last over 54 months in total, programme officials said in the August statement. Phase 0, specifically, will consist of “technology maturity assessments, preliminary system model development, system specification review, and soldier feedback opportunities” of FALCONS’ prototype technologies, programme officials said.

A phased approach to the FALCONS development will “set the conditions for a prototype development phase that will maximise competition” for the overall programme, said US Army Lieutenant Colonel Ryan Welch, product manager for Ground Sensors. (Source: Janes)

11 Sep 25. Babcock Canada and Hanwha Ocean sign teaming agreement for the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project. We have signed a teaming agreement with Hanwha Ocean, a recognised global leader in submarine design and construction. Through this agreement, which follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Technical Cooperation Agreement signed between Babcock and Hanwha Ocean in 2021 and 2022 respectively, we become the exclusive In-Service Support partner that will support Hanwha Ocean on the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP).

The CPSP is one of the largest conventional submarine procurements in modern history and offers a transformational opportunity for Canada. Hanwha Ocean has recently been selected as one of two qualified suppliers by the Government of Canada for the CPSP.

To successfully enter service by 2035 and operate a fleet of up to twelve submarines from coast to coast to coast, significant programme investment and commitment will need to be made while the chosen submarine platform is being built. The opportunity to have Canada, the submarine builder, and an experienced Canadian submarine in-service support contractor working together through the build programme will ensure Canada is best prepared to sustain its future fleet and deliver operational availability whenever and wherever the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) needs it.

This teaming agreement enables us both as leading marine organisations to combine our respective capabilities in shipbuilding and submarine in-service support to deliver a sovereign Canadian sustainment solution that will support Canada’s future fleet of submarines from build to decommissioning.
