Jun 07. Launching EU Battlegroups: RUSI Conference. Lieutenant General D (David) Leakey CMG CBE, Director General of the EU Military Staff, opened the conference (25 Jun 07) by providing an overview of EU Battlegroup capabilities. Subjects addressed by other speakers included force generation, validation, capability development, planning and civil-military co-operation.
Comment: Conceived in 2004, the battalion-sized ‘rapid response’ Battlegroups achieved full operational capability in January 2007.
During questions a bleak picture was painted of EU-NATO relations, with the MoD’s Director for Policy on International Organisations describing them as “not good enough by far”.(Source: DNA DEFENCE NEWS ANALYSIS, Issue 0726, 02 Jul 07)
