DE&S SME Open Day – 20th March 2024, 9:30 – 12:30 – Expression of Interest
Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) is open for business.
Join us for the DE&S Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (SME) Open Day.
Meet DE&S procurement teams and representatives from trade associations, and learn about upcoming Defence projects and tender opportunities right across the UK.
The highlight of the day will be a speed-dating style ‘Meet the Buyer’ session, where you will have the chance to meet multiple DE&S teams through timed conversations, focused on what your company can offer and how you can join the UK defence enterprise. After each ‘date’, contacts will be exchanged so more in-depth follow-up conversations can start.

15 Feb 24. LANPAC Registration is Now Open. Registration is open for the Association of the U.S. Army’s LANPAC Symposium and Exposition in Hawaii. An international symposium and exhibition dedicated to land forces in the Indo-Pacific, the three-day event will take place May 14–16 at the Sheraton Waikiki in Honolulu. It will feature leaders from the U.S. Army and partner armies in the Indo-Pacific and government and industry representatives. During the event, Army, international and industry leaders will discuss land forces’ contributions in the Indo-Pacific, the strategic environment in the region, efforts to build and strengthen alliances and partnerships in the region, and innovation and modernization. Army leaders from more than 25 Indo-Pacific countries are expected to attend. The Indo-Pacific is home to more than half of the world’s population, 3,000 different languages, several of the world’s largest militaries and two of the three largest economies, according to U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. In the region, the Army plays a key role as the U.S. builds partnerships with allies and works to deter countries such as China, described by senior leaders as the U.S. military’s “pacing challenge,” and North Korea.

EU Statement on the consideration on international cooperation and assistance for the full and effective implementation of the UN PoA and ITI at the Preparatory Committee for the UN Conference to Review Progress Made in the Implementation of the Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects (12-16 February 2024)
Madam Chair,
I have the honour to speak on behalf of the European Union and its Member States.
The Candidate Countries North Macedonia*, Montenegro*, Serbia*, Albania*, Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina* and Georgia, and the EFTA countries Iceland and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as San Marino align themselves with this statement.
Ever since the adoption of the UN Programme of Actions in 2001, and even before, the European Union has been investing considerably in SALW-control cooperation and assistance to third countries.
The majority of assistance projects supported by the EU can be considered as classic SALW-control projects, with a focus on voluntary civilian disarmament campaigns, collection and destruction of surplus SALW and ammunition, physical security and stockpile management for SALW and ammunition, and capacity building for marking, record keeping and tracing. The dedicated projects’ activities are led by an integrated approach where physical measures are combined with support for legislation, awareness raising and promotion of international standards such as the Modular Small-arms-control Implementation Compendium, also known as MOSAIC, and the International Ammunition Technical Guidelines, known as the IATG.
Most of these projects have a regional scope and are implemented with the help of regional organizations.
In Africa, the EU worked together with the African Union, ECOWAS, UNREC – or the Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa, and the Regional Centre on Small Arms known as RECSA.
In Europe, the EU works with the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and the South Eastern and Eastern Europe Clearing House for the Control on SALW (SEESAC) that is part of UNDP, including support to the implementation of the Roadmap for a sustainable solution to arms control in the Western Balkans. The roadmap model for regional coordinated approaches has been proven to work well and produce good results, and is therefore recommended.
In Latin America, the EU works with the Organization of American States and the Regional Centre for Peace, Disbarment and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean also known as UNLIREC.
The EU also supports combating the illicit trade in and proliferation of small arms and light weapons in the Member States of the League of Arab States.
Other EU projects enable capacity building for arms export control, which is crucial in preventing SALW from falling into the wrong hands. The EU supports States, at their request, to strengthen their arms transfer control systems with a view to implementing the Arms Trade Treaty. The activities under the project take place across the globe and include assistance for drafting legislation, training and sharing of best practices among export control professionals. In addition, the EU through the ATT implementation support program has provided technical assistance to a good number of beneficiary countries in Latin America, in Africa, in Central and South East Asia, in Eastern Europe and the Caucasus, aiming at strengthening their national systems, in line with the requirements of the Treaty.
Since 2011, the EU has been supporting INTERPOL’s Illicit Arms Records and Tracing Management System, also known as iARMS. It is an electronic platform that facilitates information exchange and investigative cooperation between law enforcement agencies.
Since 2013, the EU has also been supporting iTrace, a global reporting mechanism on illicit SALW and other illicit conventional weapons and ammunition in conflict affected areas implemented by the group Conflict Armament Research. This project aims to track and trace illicit SALW and ammunition by means of in-field research in conflict-affected regions, where local law enforcement agencies often lack the capacity to trace. The patterns of trafficking and diversion exposed by iTrace serve to increase the effectiveness of arms control measures such as export control and stockpile management.
For the EU supporting and advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women are at the core of our policies, whether at home or abroad. In line with the EU strategy on SALW adopted in 2018, the EU systematically applies gender mainstreaming in the design of new projects relating to the fight against gun violence and SALW control in general.
From its inception, the UN PoA recognised stockpile management as one of the key responsibilities of states in their efforts to prevent the diversion of SALW. The EU has been a leading supporter of international efforts to develop a voluntary, internationally recognised system for the validation of arms and ammunition management according to open international standards.
The EU also supports the implementation of the Firearms Protocol in cooperation with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The project’s activities are focussed on supporting the drafting of legislation and capacity building for law enforcement, including training for investigation and prosecution of firearms trafficking. In the context of this project, UNODC published its Firearms Study that describes trafficking and diversion cases across the globe.
EU SALW-control assistance also supports peer-to-peer exchange. The EU is facilitating cooperation between Member States’ law enforcement agencies and their counterparts in the neighbourhood. The EU has set up a network of law enforcement personnel from Member States that focus on the fight against firearms trafficking by organised crime. This network, called EMPACT Firearms, meets regularly to exchange information and experiences and develops activities in order to achieve pre-set goals.
In order to increase efficiency and sustainability of assistance efforts the Review Conference should call for an improved coordination among relevant regional organisations, donors and implementing agencies in full ownership of the governments of recipient States and steered by national action plans and strategies.
Finally, in order to increase transparency on cooperation and assistance in the field of SALW control, the EU would welcome a global repository, agreed among donors, where information about SALW control assistance is shared and registered.

12 Feb 24. Leaders from UK Space Agency, Departments of Trade and Transport, and UK Space Command, as well as Government Ministers and agencies will be exhibiting, speaking at, and attending this year’s Space-Comm Expo 2024.
Dubbed the ‘year of the space entrepreneur’ by UK Space Agency, 2024 is set to be a transformative year for the entire space industry, with more missions, start-ups and investments set to be launched and established. With the space industry growing by a staggering rate of 21% in private investment and seeing a 4% Y-O-Y increase in the number of UK-based space businesses entering the market, the sector has been identified as a growth area for the UK economy and the Government.
In late 2023 the UK Government announced that it planned to invest heavily in the UK’s growing space market with £10 bn in funding over the next decade, including more than £1.75 bn specifically allocated for the UK Space Agency.
The UK’s largest industry space event, Space-Comm Expo, provides an opportunity to collaborate and discuss learnings, legislation, future demand and opportunities. This year’s programme is focusing on several key themes: commercialising space, collaboration, sustainability, defence and investment.
