30 Aug 23. Ground-breaking medtech solutions to be exhibited at DSEI 2023. Referred to by the UK Ministry of Defence as the “moral component of war”, defence medical capabilities lie at the heart of effective military operations. Throughout history, defence and the development of cutting-edge medtech have been heavily intertwined. Today it’s no different, and as capabilities continue to become more sophisticated, naturally, medtech has continued to evolve to respond to the changing character of twenty-first century conflicts.
On display at Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI), to be held on the 12th-15th September this year, will be the latest advances in military medtech that have been designed to offer quick, effective solutions to save lives on the front line. It’s the first DSEI since the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the conflict has shown that despite significant technological advances in autonomous equipment, there will always be a human component in warfare. With this, comes the need to develop medtech to respond quickly to injury, minimising casualties.
This year the Medical Hub, supported by Defence Medical Services (DMS), is set to host companies from not only the defence sector, but also from the broader medical industry. One such company is Cambridge-based CambCol, which shares a close working relationship with the University of Cambridge. It is the developer of the solution ClottaTM, a collagen emergency haemostatic sponge. These trauma haemostat dressings target cells to clot blood instead of simply stopping the bleed. While its traditional use case is broad – delivering rapid wound healing that suits a range of situations, it is also an incredibly valuable solution for defence sector. Like other DSEI exhibitors, CambCol’s solution is currently being used daily, supporting Ukrainian forces on the front line.
Also exhibiting at DSEI is TacMed, a US, veteran-founded company that develops not only equipment such as tourniquets and bandages but also advanced simulation and training aids to ensure first responders (civilian or military) can respond effectively in a whole host of environments, and to a spectrum of complex injuries. TacMed has to date been supplying Ukraine with SOF tourniquets and Blast Bandages that have been instrumental to troops fighting in the field.
Held at the ExCeL in London, this year’s DSEI’s central focus is “Achieving an Integrated Force”. This not only refers to multi-domain integration, but also encompasses interoperability within forces. Specifically, how you can improve logistics and fortify supply chains to give units the resources to succeed. Medtech plays a key role and can have a profound impact on the operational effectiveness of forces. Knowing that there is effective care available in case of injury impacts the morale, motivation and overall operational readiness of military units which can give a significant advantage.
Alongside the exciting exhibitors, alongside DSEI this year the medical conference NATO’s Committee of the Chiefs of Military Medical Services (COMEDS) will also take place. A whole host of high-calibre speakers will talk on defence medical matters. One of which includes the UK’ s Surgeon General, Timothy Hodgetts. Major General Tetiana Ostashchenko, Commander of the Medical Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will also address the COMEDS conference.

30 Aug 23. Exploring maritime capabilities: visiting ships announced for DSEI 23. In an increasingly contested maritime environment, staying at the forefront of innovation is vital to enable the UK and its allies to promote peace, security, and prosperity in the maritime domain. Technological advances within the naval sphere will be prominent at this year’s Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI). The event will host three Royal Navy and three international ships from 12th – 15th September at London’s ExCel Centre.
The visiting naval vessels will give DSEI attendees an exclusive showcase of not only the UK’s maritime technology and capabilities, but also that of international partners.
The visiting ships this year include:
- Royal Navy Type 23 Duke-class frigate, HMS Iron Duke
- Royal Navy, P2000 Archer-class patrol vessel, HMS Pursuer
- Royal Navy, P2000 Archer-class patrol vessel, HMS Puncher
- Dutch Navy, De Zeven Provinciën-class frigate, HNLMS De Ruyter
- German Navy, German F125 Class, FGS Baden-Württemberg
- Belgian Navy, P901 Castor patrol vessel, BNS Castor
HMS Iron Duke
The Royal Navy’s HMS Iron Duke has recently returned to frontline service after undergoing the most complex overhaul of any Type 23 frigate to date. With more than 1.7 m hours of work completed by the collective efforts of shipwrights, engineers, technicians and experts – both civilian and Royal Navy; HMS Iron Duke returns to service as the most technologically advanced frigate.
With technological upgrades taking centre stage at this year’s DSEI, the Iron Duke represents the first of a series of successful technological upgrades to older ships with the LIFEX programme. This includes significant upgrades to electronic equipment, including communications, navigation and weapon systems to counter more sophisticated threats of 21st century warfare. The refit will enable HMS Iron Duke to remain at the forefront of naval operations until her successors, the Type 26s and 31 frigates begin to enter service later this decade.
HMS Pursuer and HMS Puncher
Also set to be at DSEI are two Royal Navy inshore patrol vessels, HMS Pursuer and Puncher. As part of Coastal Forces Squadron which operate across the UK and as far as the Baltic Sea and Gibraltar, the P2000 Archer Class patrol crafts are unique in their ability to operate in ports and confined waters that are not accessible to warships and can be used to support roles from safeguarding Britain’s nuclear fleet and maritime security to participating in NATO overseas operations and training the next generation of naval officers. More recently, HMS Puncher has played a key role in expanding the UK’s underwater warfare (UW) capabilities with recent Autonomous Underwater Vehicle trials.
DSEI has an increasing ambition to deepen naval partnerships and interoperability among allies, it is also set to host 3 international ships from Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium.
FGS Baden-Württemberg
Representing the German Navy at DSEI, the FGS Baden-Württemberg is one of the largest frigates in the world. It is primarily designed for low and medium intensity warfare and maritime stabilisation operations but can also contribute to sea-to-land tactical fire support, asymmetric threat control at sea and support of special forces as well as military evacuation operations. In the lead up to DSEI, the German frigate was engaged in operational sea training within the North Sea.
HNLMS De Ruyter
Echoing a push across allied NATO maritime forces to revitalise naval capabilities, the Netherlands ship, HNLMS De Ruyter is a De Zeven Provinciën-class air defence and command frigate, has also received a mid-life technological upgrade. These upgrades have expanded the versatility of the ship, expanding its capabilities to protect a fleet across the environments and host a complete operational staff on board.
BNS Castor
The Belgian Navy’s BNS Castor reinforces the Coastguard structure and operates predominantly within the Belgian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) but can be deployed wider within Europe. BNS Castor conducts the following tasks: security of critical maritime infrastructure, monitoring of non-NATO units, fishery and customs inspection, anti-pollution operations, MARPOL inspections and search and rescue operations at sea.
Alongside the visiting ships, the maritime domain is well represented with the Naval Zone set to entice visitors with an interactive showcase of the latest vessels and naval technology. The Royal Navy will have a strong presence at DSEI and will host a stand that will focus on the Future Air Dominance System concept, surface and underwater UAVs, missile systems and will feature interactive displays.
DSEI’s Senior Naval Advisor, Rear Admiral (ret) Jon Pentreath stated:
“This year DSEI’s Naval zone is set to display an array of innovative solutions that will address the most complex challenges the UK and its allies face in an increasingly contested maritime environment. As with other domains, there will be a heavy focus on how the widespread adoption of disruptive technologies can not only be used to build better, more agile maritime equipment and machinery, but also how it can be used to improve the longevity of vessels, transforming older parts of the fleet to expand capabilities and gain the strategic edge.
One of the unique aspects of DSEI is that with its location in London’s docklands, it can showcase ships. This year, we welcome ships from the United Kingdon, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, reinforcing one of the most crucial aspects of the tradeshow which is to foster collaboration and partnerships with our closest allies.”

01 Sep 23. Record Attendance at the International Drone Show 2023 at Odense, Denmark. Hundreds of drone developers, end-users, scholars and decision-makers from all over the world gathered on Tuesday, August 29, for the International Drone Show 2023 at Hans Christian Andersen Airport near Odense, Denmark.
The International Drone Show (IDS) 2023 at the Danish Hans Christian Andersen Airport was once again a huge success with participation from key industry players from the private as well as the public sector, spanning from startups to well-established companies as well as a broad range of potential end-users.
Along the way, participants – coming from mainly the Nordic countries, the rest of Europe and the US – had the opportunity to hear more about highly topical issues such as green mobility, security and defense, and legislation. The program included panel debates, presentations and workshops on topics such as defense, Nordic airspace, vertiports, digital air traffic and protection of critical infrastructure.
“It was a pleasure to see so many familiar and new faces. The drone industry is evolving rapidly, which is why it is important to have events like the International Drone Show, where you can refuel with new knowledge, forge new relationships and hopefully go home both inspired and excited,”
says Michael Larsen, Head of UAS Denmark Test Center, which is behind IDS together with the cluster organization Odense Robotics.
Great for Doing Business
One of the main purposes of the International Drone Show is to bring together manufacturers and developers of drone technology with potential end users and partners from both the private and public sectors – including the defense sector.
Therefore, this year there was a new option to book business meetings in advance and hold them at the airport during the event.
“After all, it’s easier to do business when you’re sitting across from each other. Therefore, we have tried to create the optimal framework so that you can also use IDS to expand your network, forge new partnerships and make new agreements,”
says Lisa Rosenlyst Hansen, Business Manager at Odense Robotics.
More than 25 exhibitors showcased their solutions and projects at this year’s IDS, including well-established drone companies such as Nordic Unmanned, UXV Technologies and Rohde & Schwarz.
The Green Infrastructure of Tomorrow
IDS also featured tracks about CUAS (counter-unmanned aircraft systems) and the use of drones in military and defence, as well as a legislation track featuring a keynote speak from EASA, European Union Aviation Safety Agency.
Another topic high on the agenda was green mobility and specifically flying taxis for convenient and CO2-friendly transportation of passengers between cities, regions and even countries.
The first commercial flying taxis will be airborne during next summer’s Olympics in Paris, but many other cities around the world are looking at flying taxis as a supplement to traditional commuter traffic on roads and railways – including Odense.
At IDS, it was thus possible to listen to presentations from a number of players who are helping to develop tomorrow’s green infrastructure – including Swedish Kookiejar and Danish Copenhagen Helicopter.
Throughout the day, there were also live demo flights with drones from Quadsat, DroneVolt, Nordic Wing, Avular, Ericsson and University of Southern Denmark, among others. (Source: UAS VISION)
29 Aug 23. Conclave-Cum-Symposium on Self Reliance in Missile Technology Held at Visakhapatnam. The Missile Technology Conclave-cum-Symposium themed ‘Aatmanirbharta in Missile Repairs & Indigenisation Technologies (AMRIT-2023)’, was organised by INS Kalinga at Samudrika Auditorium, Naval Base, Visakhapatnam on 23 Aug 23. The event was inaugurated by Vice Admiral Sameer Saxena, AVSM, NM, Chief of Staff, Eastern Naval Command. Dr Y Srinivas Rao, DS, DG NS&M and Shri GA Srinivasa Murthy, DS, Director DRDL delivered special address during inaugural session.
Papers were presented and technical talks were held by personnel from varied organisations leading to an effervescent exchange of ideas. Academia partners from Military Institute of Technology, Pune and National Research and Development Corporation (NRDC), also actively engaged in the discussions, drawing vital inputs for their work.
The Symposium received an overwhelming response from viz. DRDO, PSUs, DPSUs, Indian Private Defence industries, MSMEs/ Start-ups, representatives from State Government and Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM). Exhibition stalls were also set-up during the event, wherein the DRDO labs, DPSUs and private defence firms showcased their expertise and capabilities in Missile Repairs and Indigenisation.
The seminar provided and fostered a symbiotic environment for all stakeholders viz. Indian Public & Private Industries, DRDO Labs, Academia and Indian Navy in line with the Government of India’s initiative – ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ mission. Going forward it is envisaged to benefit the Indian Navy in particular and the Armed Forces in general to minimise dependence on Foreign OEMs and also strengthen the core competencies of our Defence Industry and ultimately lead the nation towards Aatmanirbharta.
The Chief Guest congratulated all the participating agencies to have partnered in the journey towards ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and in making AMRIT-23 a grand success. Cmde CS Nayar, Commanding Officer, INS Kalinga delivered the vote of thanks. The exhibition stalls were also visited by naval personnel, Subject Matter Experts, local firms, technical institutes and engineering colleges.

25 Aug 23. Republic of Fiji hosts military chiefs from across the world.
The US Indo-Pacific Command Chiefs of Defense Conference took place in Nadi. Co-hosted by the Republic of Fiji’s Military Forces and the US Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM), this year’s INDOPACOM Chiefs of Defense Conference was an important opportunity to continue building valuable international partnerships in the region.
These relationships across the globe are critical to ensuring UK Defence continues to respond collaboratively to security challenges and increasingly border-less threats.
Representing the UK, General Jim Hockenhull joined military Chiefs from over 25 nations to discuss shared challenges, such as cyber and information threats, and how we respond to the impacts of climate change.
There was also a focus on the evolving role of senior enlisted leaders and the enlisted force. Representing Strategic Command’s enlisted personnel, Command Sergeant Major WO Sara Catterall spoke on this important topic and shared ideas with her counterparts from across the globe.

29 Aug 23. Farnborough International Airshow 2024 reports record demand from the global aerospace industry. In line with the positive outlook for the aerospace industry, which is expecting commercial revenues to grow 14% year-on-year, the forthcoming edition of the Farnborough International Airshow in 2024 is reporting record-breaking demand for exhibition space, sponsorship packages and marketing activations. The show is set to reach new heights as the preeminent marketplace for an industry on an upward trajectory.
Despite the ongoing supply chain challenges, the aerospace and space industries are set to soar during the next year. IATA has estimated that the global airline industry is expected to return to profitability in 2023, reaching $5 bn in profit, and Accenture has reported that MRO recovery is expected to stay steady through 2023, with most executives anticipating MRO budgets will stay the same or increase in the next 24 months.
Heading above the atmosphere, the global space market has grown to approximately $447bn, up from $280bn in 2010, and is estimated to reach $1trn by 2030, according to a report by McKinsey and World Economic Forum.
The industry’s reporting of high, pre-pandemic level results is reflected in the increased demand for exhibition opportunities and floor space at Farnborough International Airshow 2024. Over 90% of commercial exhibition spaces and chalets are reserved and sold across the show site, with only a handful of self-build stands remaining across the show’s four exhibition halls. To meet the exceptional demand, Farnborough International, organisers of the airshow, are constructing 17 new chalets with more than 50% of these already sold.
