CYBER WARFARE AND HOMELAND SECURITY UPDATE

22 Jun 12. European aerospace company targeted by cyber hackers. A European aerospace company has been targeted in a cyber-espionage attack, according to internet security firm Sophos. The unidentified company suffered a ‘zero-day attack’, which exploits a previously unknown software vulnerability in Microsoft’s Windows operating system, allowing the attackers to infect computers and access any files residing on the system. The attack was discovered when a user attempted to access the company’s website and received a warning message that the website had been infected. (Source: Jane’s, JDW)

09 Jul 12. The National Security Agency (NSA) has approved ECTOCRYP® Black voice encryption device to encrypt secure voice calls up to and including those classified as top secret on U.S. government communications networks. EADS North America has been working with NSA and the device recently underwent NSA evaluation and received its Approval to Operate, which is equivalent to the agency’s Type 1 designation. ECTOCRYP® Black allows users who may be on a combination of classified and unclassified phone networks in several locations to talk to each other seamlessly through one purpose-built gateway. It enables interoperability between red and black enclaves, secure teleconferencing and point-to-point communication. As technology standards evolve, the programmable encryption platform can be adapted to keep pace with them and provide interoperability with different types of networks. The product has demonstrated interoperability with other Secure Communications Interoperability Protocol (SCIP) devices during government testing, and has been evaluated by the Joint Interoperability

04 Jul 12. Indra presented its cybersecurity capabilities at the International Cybercrime Course. The Event, Organised by the National Police in Palencia (Spain) in coordination with Tedae, includes the participation of the FBI, Frontex and Europol. Indra displayed its cybersecurity solutions, Police Intervention Simulator and performed a flight demonstration of its UAVs. Indra participates in the International Cybercrime Course in the Framework of Public and Private Security, organised by the National Police and TEDAE (Spanish Association for Defence, Aeronautics and Space Technologies) at the San Zoilo Monastery in Carrión de los Condes (Palencia, Spain) on July 5th and 6th. The company attended as a leading company that is capable of covering all the areas of cybersecurity: citizens operating via the Internet with administrations or companies, organisation and private companies, critical infrastructures for society, and lastly, the state’s organisation and operation. Indra is also the only Spanish company that is capable of undertaking both aspects of security: cybersecurity (communication and information systems) and physical security (venue, border and air space security, etc.). The objective of this international course is to provide the industry and security forces with the possibility of establishing ways of collaborating in this field.
