17 Jul 23. The British Army Programmes Directorate has publicly announced the acquisition of an additional 44 LC200 Civilian Armoured Vehicles. Working closely alongside Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S), our [British Army Programmes Directorate’s] Rapid Acquisition Team is right on track to deliver an additional 44 Civilian Armoured Vehicles (CAV) to the Field Army to enhance their operational capabilities. Capitalising on the unexpected availability of additional Toyota LC200s, the RAT has secured 44 additional platforms. These will allow military personnel across the globe to blend in with other road users by using a lower-profile vehicle, where discretion is key to mission success. The team worked closely with DE&S to accelerate delivery to the Army, with the first vehicles expected to be handed over to the users by late-2023. 17 Jul 23. A £20m contract has been awarded by Defence Equipment & Support, securing the hardware for the next phase of tests on a cutting-edge new rocket and missile protection system for Britain’s Challenger 3 tanks. The Trophy Active Protection System (APS) will be tested and integrated with Challenger 3 to provide enhanced protection against rocket and missile threats, while simultaneously finding the origin of the hostile fire for immediate response. The system can locate an incoming rocket or missile in less than a second, destroying it by firing back its own ammunition. The system, which is being supplied by industry partner Rafael, has completed three weeks of assessment phase trials on the Challenger 3 representative system with a total 25 shots, including live intercept shots. The contract will secure a number of trophy systems and counter measures and test equipment required for the qualification and integration activity planned for the upcoming demonstration phase. Thales Wins £169m Contract for Dreadnought ‘Periscopes. has been providing the Silent Service with their ‘eyes’ since World War 1 has been awarded a £169m contract for periscopes for next-generation Dreadnought submarines. Thales Glasgow has been selected to provide state-of-the-art ‘optronic masts’ – 21st Century successors to the iconic periscope – for all four future nuclear deterrent submarines (HMS Dreadnought, Valiant, Warspite, and George VI). The Glasgow arm of the huge international defence firm traces its history back to 1917 and Glaswegian engineering and optical firm Barr and Stroud, who were asked to produce a periscope for new Royal Navy M-class submarines. Since then the firm, which was taken over by Thales in 2000, has become a world-leader in optics/periscope design and progress through to the modern-day optronic masts. These masts – periscopes which do not penetrate a submarine’s hull, but do record a 360-degee digital image for the command team to analyse at their leisure – also provide night vision and thermal imaging and support communications on top of assisting with targeting, navigation and situational awareness. 18 Jul 23. Indra is furthering the integration of one of the most important elements for the evolution of the system that protects the Eurofighter Typhoon against enemy missile attacks and radar. The company will enhance the Praetorian DASS’s bandwidth to increase the aircraft’s ability to detect threats and fly safely during its most complex missions. At the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT), the world’s largest military air event, Leonardo, on behalf of the EuroDASS consortium (Leonardo, Elettronica, Indra and Hensoldt), announced the next package of improvements to the Praetorian DASS self-protection system. This has been accompanied by a static exhibition of the key enhancement proposed, including the bandwidth enhancement developed by Indra. These improvements will be presented to the Eurofighter Typhoon partner countries, which are Germany, Spain, Italy and the United Kingdom, and subsequently offered to export customers. Their development will increase the survivability of the aircraft and lay the foundations for the defence system’s integration with Typhoon’s highly capable E-scan radars. 18 Jul 23. UK awards study contracts for Merlin service life extension. The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has placed parallel contracts with Lockheed Martin UK and Leonardo Helicopters UK to identify, scope, and mitigate obsolescence issues expected to manifest in the Royal Navy’s (RN’s) Merlin helicopter fleet beyond 2030. Under the Merlin Out of Service Date Extension Programme (OSDEP), the two companies will explore potential updates to both the Merlin HM2 and Merlin HC4/4a aircraft in order to sustain and enhance their respective capabilities through to a planned 2040 end-of-life. 18 Jul 23. Infleqtion and QinetiQ Win Award to Apply Quantum Computing to Logistics. Infleqtion, the world’s quantum information company, and QinetiQ, a leading defense company, are thrilled to announce their successful bid for the Quantum End-to-end Compilation for Combinatorial Optimisation (QECCO) project through Innovate UK. This groundbreaking initiative will focus on using quantum algorithms to solve complex combinatorial optimisation problems in logistics and deliver this crucial quantum software capability to the UK National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC). 20 Jul 23. Hungary awards Rheinmetall and UVision a major contract for the Hero loitering munitions – order volume in the three-digit m-euro range. Rheinmetall AG of Düsseldorf has secured an important order from Hungary for Hero Loitering Munitions. Contracts to this effect have now been signed. The munitions are worth a figure in the low three-digit m-euro range. Delivery will begin in 2024 and is scheduled to end in 2025. Hero Loitering Munitions are a family of operationally proven, widely used effectors which Rheinmetall fabricates and markets in Europe under a cooperation agreement with UVision Air Ltd. of Israel. In October 2021 Rheinmetall and UVision embarked on a strategic partnership aimed at addressing sharply tactical missions alike.
18 Jul 23. Bundeswehr contracts with Rheinmetall for several hundred thousand artillery shells; order worth around €1.3bn. The need to replenish stores of ammunition caused by the war in Ukraine is resulting in major artillery ammunition contracts for Rheinmetall. The German Bundeswehr has just issued a large-volume order for service and practice artillery ammunition worth around €1.3bn, including value added tax. Two contracts to this effect have now been signed at the Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) in Koblenz. Rheinmetall has been awarded a new framework contract for the supply of 155mm artillery ammunition, while an existing framework contract has been expanded. In all, the scope of delivery encompasses several hundred thousand shells of various types, including fuses and propelling charges. Set to run until 2029, the new framework contract represents potential order volume of around €1.2bn, including VAT. Furthermore, the Bundeswehr has expanded an existing framework agreement for DM121 ammunition. In addition to the framework contract cited above, this represents order volume of around €137m, once again including VAT. The volume of the existing framework contract thus increases from €109m to a total of €246m, including VAT. Featuring insensitive characteristics, the DM121 high-explosive shell is used for training and exercise purposes.

20 Jul 23. Orizzonte Sistemi Navali (OSN), the joint venture owned by Fincantieri and Leonardo with respective stakes of 51% and 49%, has signed, with the Directorate of Naval Armaments of the Secretariat General of Defence / National Armaments Directorate, the Maintenance in Operational Conditions (MOC) Framework Agreement for the Cavour aircraft carrier and the Andrea Doria and Caio Duilio Horizon-class destroyers of the Italian Navy. The Agreement has a maximum total value of euro 190m and will conclude at the end of 2028. The signing of the first implementation contract between the prime contractor OSN and Navarm will take place in the coming days, covering the first two years of service. Specifically, the activities envisaged refer to the platform and combat systems and equipment of the units covered by the Agreement in the period 2023-2028, in order to ensure the maintenance of their operational conditions and the increased expertise of Navy personnel. Fincantieri will be responsible for the in-service support activities of the platform systems and equipment, including the engine, automation system, electrical generation and air conditioning systems, manoeuvring and propulsion mechanisms, as well as the aircraft elevators of the Cavour ship and the helicopter transport system of the Horizon class units. Leonardo will be tasked with all subsystems related to the Combat System, radar sensors, Combat Management System, launchers and weapon systems of the two classes of ships, at the La Spezia and Taranto naval bases. On 18 July 2023, OCCAR-EA Director Joachim Sucker and eurosam Managing Director Eva Bruxmeier signed the Amendment of the FSAF-PAAMS Sustainment & Enhancement (S&E) contract for the procurement of new generation ground based air defence systems SAMP/T NG for Italian Air Force. This procurement adds to the SAMP/T NG production ordered in January 2023 for the Italian Army and French Air and Space Force. Organisation Conjointe de Coopération en matière d’Armement (OCCAR) has awarded this amendment to the S&E contract, by delegation of Segretariato Generale della Difesa e Direzione Nazionale degli Armamenti (SEGREDIFESA) and Direction Générale de l’Armement (DGA), to the Italo-French consortium eurosam; backed by its three shareholders MBDA France, MBDA Italia and Thales LAS France. The contract was signed in the presence of SEGREDIFESA, DGA and Italian Air Force representatives as it sees this Armed Force joining as a new FSAF-PAAMS domestic user, following the Italian Army and Navy, the French Navy and Air and Space Force and the British Royal Navy. With this contract, Italian Air Force will be equipped with SAMP/T NG ground-to-air defence capabilities, fitted with the Kronos Grand Mobile High Power radar from Leonardo (see note). The SAMP/T NG system development, launched in 2021 in cooperation between France and Italy, is an enhancement of the SAMP/T system in service since 2010 and currently deployed in Europe and in the Middle-East. 18 Jul 23. Turkish Aerospace, Aselsan ink $2bn in deals to upgrade F-16 jets. Turkish Aerospace Industries has signed two contracts worth nearly $2bn with the country’s largest defense company to upgrade F-16 fighter jets. Kosovo has bought a batch of Turkish-made Bayraktar drones, its leader said on Sunday, at a time when it faces unrest in the north where ethnic Serbs refuse to recognise Pristina authorities. In a Facebook post showing him in front of a drone with his defence minister, Prime Minister Albin Kurti said latest security spending was making the country safer. He did not give the number or cost of the drones, Kosovo’s first, nor say what they would be used for. 19 Jul 23. Mercury Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRCY, www.mrcy.com), a technology company that delivers processing power for the most demanding aerospace and defense missions, received a $14m contract from PIT-RADWAR S.A., a supplier of the Republic of Poland’s Armed Forces, to deliver subsystem processing boards for a new mobile radar system. Under this contract, Mercury will upgrade the system architecture with a new design to improve performance, range, and accuracy of the radar. Mercury Systems processing solutions are high-performance, rugged computing solutions designed for use in the most demanding environments. 20 Jul 23. Thales has been notified by the European Space Agency (ESA), on behalf of the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA) and the European Union represented by the European Commission, of two major contracts for cybersecurity of Galileo Second Generation (G2G) programme. Together, these contracts represent a total value of over 60m euros (excluding options) and confirm the Group’s key role in the cybersecurity of the second generation of the Galileo programme as Thales will be in charge of all elements of the security and resilience of G2G.

Sydney-based Business news Australia has reported that Australian company DroneShield has won its second major international contract in the space of two weeks. The company’s latest deal with an undisclosed US Government agency is for DroneShield equipment and ongoing services and worth $33m. Oshkosh Defense LLC, an Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE: OSK) company, announced today that it received a $57m order from the U.S. Army Contracting Command – Detroit Arsenal (ACC-DTA) to produce 116 Enhanced Heavy Equipment Transporter System (EHETS) trailers. Oshkosh will execute the order with support from its subcontractor, Broshuis B.V. The EHETS trailer is designed to be pulled by the Oshkosh Heavy Equipment Transport (HET), allowing for transport of the heaviest tracked vehicles on European roadways. 17 Jul 23. Northrop Grumman to Design Autonomous VTOL UAS for DARPA. The US Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) has awarded Northrop Grumman a contract to design an autonomous Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) capable of operating from a moving vessel at sea. Raytheon Missiles and Defense, Tucson, Arizona, has been awarded an $81,000,000 modification (P00072) to cost-plus-fixed-fee contract HR0011-17-C-0025, excluding unexercised options, for more opportunities with the Hypersonic Airbreathing Weapon Concept Program. The modification brings the total cumulative face value of the contract to $352,950,076 from $271,950,076. 19 Jul 23. MACOM Technology Solutions Inc. (“MACOM”), a leading supplier of semiconductor products, today announced that it has been awarded a contract from the United States Air Force Research Laboratory (“AFRL”) to develop advanced semiconductor process technology related to Gallium Nitride-on-Silicon Carbide (“GaN-on-SiC”). 19 Jul 23. MilDef has signed an initial production contract from Astronics Corporation, a provider of advanced technologies for global aerospace, defense and mission critical industries. This contract integrates MilDef’s computing platform within the Astronics portable radio test suite being provided to U.S. Marine Corps’ (USMC) Handheld Radio Test Sets Program (HHRTS). This initial contract, valued at 3 MUSD for MilDef, is in support of USMC’s fielding for the Astronics HHRTS test equipment and will be delivered in 2023/2024 to meet the fielding plan. Saab has been selected by the office of Naval research to develop next-wave Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities to increase battlespace situational awareness by automatically detecting and characterizing threats in complex environments. The Canadian Department of National Defence (DND) has awarded NP Aerospace Canada the Land Equipment Program – Engineering Technical Support Services Contract (LEP-ETSS) following a competitive tender. The contract will run for up to five years with NP Aerospace Canada as prime contractor, forming a strategic alliance with Marshall Land Systems Canada with the support of specialist suppliers and testing facilities. BAE Systems Australia will deliver Electronic Warfare Systems to the E-7A Wedgetail aircraft fleet of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) until 2028 after winning a two-year contract extension. 20 Jul 23. Hindustan Aeronautical Ltd (HAL) will provide Light and Medium Utility Helicopters to the Argentinian armed forces, it was decided on Thursday. HAL and visiting Argentinian defence officials had a detailed discussion over the light and medium utility helicopters and signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) on productive cooperation and their acquisition for the Argentine armed forces, as per the Defence Ministry. Teledyne FLIR Defense, part of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE:TDY), will produce Black Hornet® 3 Personal Reconnaissance Systems for use in Ukraine as part of an order from Norway’s Ministry of Defense. The Norwegian MOD will procure an additional 1,000 Black Hornet unmanned aerial systems (UAS), as well as spare parts, maintenance, and training for Ukrainian operators and instructors.
