30 Mar 20. Cobham Aerospace Connectivity announces that it has been awarded a contract by the UK MOD’s Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) to research Advanced Anti-Jam techniques for the protection of navigation signals received from the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). The contract will see Cobham conduct research to develop means to provide assured and resilient Position Navigation and Timing (PNT) information derived from the GNSS multi-constellation. Cobham was best placed to address the UK MOD’s needs through its extensive background in advanced antenna technology and sophisticated signal processing capabilities. The research is set against a backdrop of increasing reliance on GNSS navigation signals in the nation’s critical infrastructure and national security and the frequent interruptions of the signals either accidentally or intentionally. The more sophisticated interruptions involve the falsification of the navigation signal information for nefarious reasons such as piracy, civil disruption and military advantage. The DE&S-backed research feeds into the company’s goal of taking already developed Anti Jam capability and developing a miniaturized system capable of providing advanced means of protection of the navigation signals received from the GNSS multi-constellation network. The anti-jam system will combine the use of advanced Controlled Radiation Pattern Array (CRPA) antenna technology with intelligent digital signal processing techniques not only to ensure reliable and assured navigation information, but also to derive important signal intelligence and domain awareness information regarding the source and nature of the interference and the best means of mitigation.

02 Apr 20. Helping the helpers: Rheinmetall to supply federal authorities in Germany with up to six million respiratory protection masks. Rheinmetall is stepping in to support the German government in the coronavirus crisis by supplying high-quality respiratory protection masks. Thanks to its global production and sales networks, especially in China, Rheinmetall has succeeded in sourcing urgently needed protective equipment. Within a few days, around a million Chinese-made masks (protection class FFP2) will be supplied to the responsible Bundeswehr procurement authorities in Koblenz. Together with a partner company, Rheinmetall has taken complete charge of the procurement and transport logistics as well as quality inspection. A contract to this effect has now been signed with the Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-service Support (BAAINBw). The contract encompasses an option for the supply of a further five million masks by Rheinmetall. At the beginning of March, Germany’s Federal Ministry of Health turned to the Ministry of Defence for help in combatting the coronavirus pandemic. Together with procurement agencies of the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Interior Ministry, BAAINBw is now working to source the urgently required equipment for maintaining the healthcare system and protecting the population. Rheinmetall – and not just because it is one of the Bundeswehr’s top equipment suppliers – feels a strong obligation to lend a hand in the current crisis by helping to overcome the shortage of medical equipment.

30 Mar 20. ECA GROUP will provide the Lithuanian Navy with its K-STER mine disposal vehicles to be used for mine counter measures at sea. After being one of the first navies to be equipped with ECA GROUP’s K-STER MIDS ROV back in 2009, the Lithaunian Navy, renewed its trust in the capabilities of this solution to neutralise sea mines. Ordering another batch of this system, the Lithuanian Navy confirms its trust and satisfaction towards the performances of the K-STER. The K-STER solution equips 20 navies worldwide and has been recently chosen by the Belgian Navy and Royal Netherlands Navy as part of the modernisation program of their MCM Capabilities to be delivered within the next 3 years. In spring 2019, as part of the Open spirit exercise held in Lithuania, ECA GROUP’s K-STER systems were deployed. Alongside traditional means of mine neutralisation, Lithuania and NATO mine countermeasure ships participating in the exercise were equipped with this ECA GROUP solution, which has once again successfully demonstrated its efficiency and reliability to complete mine neutralisation operations. K-STER is a expendable mine disposal system developed by ECA GROUP in 2008. Inheriting from the successful PAP solution and benefitting from the latest technologies and R&D development, this Remotely Operated Vehicle is dedicated to underwater mine countermeasures. This sea proven solution allows to neutralise mine while keeping crew safe. Operators can run the drone from a command and control unit located outside of the minefield, whether onboard a ship or from the land – in this case, the K-STER can be automatically deployed from an USV platform. Designed with tiltable shape charge, the K-STER can neutralise all kinds of mines from seabottom mines, floating mines, historical mines to the smartest mines. Its unique propulsion architecture allows to stand strong water currents and approach the mine to its closest. Safety characteristics includes insensitive ammunition & multi-pole safety interlocks until the final firing. ECA Group’s K-STER solution is compliant to NATO standards thanks to the integration of the most advanced technologies in term of reduced acoustic and magnetic signatures. The K-STER MIDS ROV can also be integrated in a collaborative system of drones UMISTM, and can thus be automatically be deployed by an USV. All operations can be planned, run and analysed through a common interface software UMISOFTTM allowing the simultaneous use of several drones during all the phases of MCM operations, in a user-friendly way.
