20 Mar 20. Royal Danish Army buys Weibel muzzle velocity radar for mortars. The Royal Danish Army is now installing Weibel Scientific’s MVR-700 – a muzzle velocity radar (MVR) – on its recently acquired Elbit Systems/ESL Cardom 10 120 mm muzzle-loaded smoothbore mortars, which arm the service’s Piranha 5 8×8 vehicles. A total of 12 Cardom 10s have been procured by the Danish Ministry of Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO) and these are fitted with a load-assist device to increase the rate of fire and reduce crew fatigue. Weibel Scientific developed its family of Doppler-based MVRs using internal research and development funding. For the Danish application, the MVR-700 is mounted parallel to the 120 mm barrel, according to the company. Muzzle variation of the mortar bomb takes place because of a number of factors, including the variability of the clip-on propellant at the base of the mortar bomb and its temperature, according to a US Army study. Weibel Scientific noted that muzzle velocity and meteorological conditions are the key drivers that can affect accuracy. In the case of the Royal Danish Army, the MVR-700 is integrated with the on-board computerised fire control system (FCS) and the land navigation system (both inertial navigation and global positioning system). This enables the mortar system to come into action and carry out a rapid target engagement sequence. If the mortar is not fitted with an on-board FCS computer then the muzzle velocity data can be taken manually from the MVR-700 display and used to calculate firing data manually. (Source: Jane’s)

25 Mar 20. US Air Force awards Edgybees contract for Argus augmented reality software. Key Points:
- The USAF has awarded Edgybees a contract to provide its Argus augmented reality software
- Argus will be used with the MQ-9 Reaper and ScanEagle UAVs
The US Air Force on 17 March awarded Edgybees a contract for the company’s Argus augmented reality (AR) software solution, according to a company statement. Argus will be integrated with the service’s systems to improve situational awareness in complex operational scenarios. This follows a round of contracts awarded to Edgybees by the AFWERX small business initiative at the end of 2019, including a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase 2 contract. SBIR Phase 2 awards are competitive contracts that enable small businesses to explore their technological potential within the defence sector and beyond. Argus will provide commanders detailed insight into operational environments by augmenting live video footage with layers of precise, real-time geospatial information. Adam Kaplan, Edgybees chief executive officer (CEO) and co-founder, told Jane’s on 23 March that the company fuses computer algorithms and geospatial information into video in real time. This brings situational awareness to pilots and people on the ground, he said. Argus can also be used with thermal imaging, full motion video (FMV), and synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Kaplan said Edgybees is working with the USAF to put Argus to work for many of the service’s unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), including the General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc (GA-ASI) MQ-9 Reaper medium-altitude, long-endurance (MALE) UAV. Argus will also be used with Insitu’s ScanEagle endurance mini-UAV for Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC). (Source: Jane’s)

Space and Missile Systems Center, Los Angeles Air Force Base, California, is the contracting activity.
26 Mar 20. Slingshot Aerospace, Inc., an advanced analytics company, today announced that the United States Air Force Life Cycle Management Center (AFLCMC) awarded the company a $1.5m Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract, which encourages domestic small businesses to engage in Federal Research/Research and Development (R/R&D) to pursue high-tech innovation that has the potential for commercialization. In conjunction, Slingshot Aerospace venture capital backers ATX Venture Partners and Revolution’s Rise of the Rest Seed Fund matched the government’s funding as part of the RAPID Innovation Fund, a program at the United States Department of Defense that seeks to accelerate fielding of promising technologies into military systems. The combined $3m will support rapid development and deployment of Slingshot EDGE, the company’s Artificial Intelligence-powered EDGE platform for use with small unmanned aircraft system (sUAS), in particular with software development, engineering and system tests. Slingshot EDGE will help enable Air Force Special Operations forces to pivot from manually intensive situational awareness processes to a more tactical, timely and autonomous decision-making solution. 23 Mar 20. India signs USD117.8m deal with IWI for LMGs. India’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed an INR8.8bn (USD117.8m) contract with Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) on 19 March for 16,749 Negev NG-7 7.62×51mm light machine guns (LMGs) for the Indian Army (IA). “The provisioning of this operationally urgent and critically needed weapon will boost the confidence of the [army’s] frontline troops and provide much needed combat power to the armed forces” said the MoD in a statement issued that same day. These LMGs, it added, will enhance the “lethality and range” of army soldiers compared to those provided by the currently used weapon. The Negev NG-7 was ordered after numerous setbacks – including at least one tender cancellation – under the Fast Track Procedure (FTP) initiated in May 2019 as part of the MoD’s overarching Defence Procurement Procedure-2016 (DPP-2016) to meet the IA’s 11 year-old demand for a new LMG.
