16 Feb 18. Ultra Electronics USSI has announced the receipt of $1.2m contract award for D245XR and D350XR fuel cells for use in Group 1 unmanned aerial systems (UAS). Representing the most advanced solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) power technology available today, the D245XR and D350XR fuel cells provide UAS platforms advanced sensor capabilities, extended operational range and an excess of eight flight hours in the small UAS footprint. Compared to traditional powered UAS platforms, those powered by the D245XR and D350XR SOFC technology can fly further and longer, as well as carry more mission-critical sensors with a much smaller logistical impression. Unlike internal combustion engine generators, which have large moving assemblies and a significantly larger noise signature, the only moving parts in a D245XR and D350XR are the internal cooling and air-delivery fans, providing an acoustic noise signature similar to that of a battery-powered UAS platform.
