06 Mar 17. Bittium has received a purchase order from the Finnish Defence Forces for the Bittium Tactical Wireless IP Network™ (TAC WIN) system products, which are meant for tactical communications. The products that were ordered will be delivered to the Finnish Defence Forces during the year 2017. The product order is part of the renewal of the Finnish Army’s command, control and communications system, where the Software-Defined Radio based Bittium TAC WIN system forms the core of the Army’s tactical wireless IP network. Bittium TAC WIN provides a mobile broadband IP network connection for the combat troops. This supports the Finnish Army’s reformed combat doctrine, where mobility, leading the troops on the move and effective communications are playing a key role. The value of the received purchase order is EUR 3.8m (excl. VAT). The order has no effect on Bittium’s financial outlook for the year 2017, published on February 20, 2017 in Bittium’s Financial Statement Bulletin 2016.

08 Mar 17. Cohort, the independent technology group, is pleased to announce that its subsidiary MCL (Marlborough Communications Ltd) has been awarded a contract by the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) to supply and support hearing protection systems and communication ancillaries for specialist land, maritime and air applications. The initial value of the four-year contract is £9.9m. In addition, the contract includes options for a one-year extension and a complete mid-life enhancement of the capability. The contract follows previous MOD contract awards for hearing protection announced in 2015. The solution being supplied by MCL was developed in partnership with INVISIO Communications, a leading Danish audio technology company.

09 Mar 17. Lincad, a UK-based leader in the design and manufacture of bespoke batteries, chargers and power management systems, has signed a supply agreement with Leonardo MW to provide batteries, power adaptors and filter adaptors for the Type 163 Laser Target Designator. A man-portable laser designed to provide laser designation for semi-active laser guided weapons, the Type 163 enables Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTACs) to direct close air support for ground troops in combat operations. Traditionally, laser target designators have proved too heavy and bulky for JTACs to take into front-line operations which is why Leonardo developed the Type 163, building on its previous experience with military lasers. The growing demand for the Type 163, which has been deployed by US Special Operations Forces, the US Air Force and the US Air National Guard, has led to this new supply agreement with Lincad. The battery being supplied is a detachable, side-mounting, ruggedized 18V, 3Ah Li-ion battery. Weighing less than 400g, it offers an effective solution to the critical weight issues and is designed with shrouded contacts and retractable latches for snag-free storage.
