18 Apr 16. DRS Technologies Inc., a Finmeccanica Company, will provide rugged tactical displays, rugged computing technology upgrades, and associated services for Bowman, the tactical C4I system for British Armed Forces combat vehicles. The contract, awarded by General Dynamics U.K. to DRS Technologies U.K. Limited (DRS UK), is valued at $51m, solidifying DRS as the major supplier of tactical computing and networking to military forces in the United Kingdom through the Bowman program. In the United States, DRS is also the major supplier for military tactical computing and networking through the Mounted Family of Computer Systems (MFoCS). Technology used in support of the MFoCS program will serve as the source of the Bowman technology upgrade, supplying computer mainboards as the key enabler. The result will represent the latest in ultra-rugged commercial-off-the-shelf technology in the form of Intel® i7 multi-core CPUs, solid state hard drives, battery technology and keyboards. Work for this contract will be accomplished collaboratively by the company’s DRS UK business unit in Farnham, Surrey, U.K. and DRS Network Computing and Test Solutions business unit in Melbourne, Florida. Product deliveries are expected to begin in July 2017.

Lincad, a leader in the design and manufacture of bespoke batteries, chargers and power management systems, is pleased to announce that it has secured significant orders from Danish Defence, the unified armed forces of the Kingdom of Denmark, for a range of the company’s LIPS (lithium-ion power system) batteries and chargers. The company’s LIPS range of batteries represent over 15 years of evolution in battery technology and design, with continued improvements in capacity and energy density being achieved through the integration of new cell technology and enhanced mechanical and electronic design. Ruggedised to meet the most demanding operational requirements, the batteries are available in a variety of capacity options and alternative communication protocols to suit a range of different applications.
21 Apr 16. VTS Radar Systems from Kelvin Hughes chosen for Port of Marseille Fos. A world leader in the design and supply of navigation and security surveillance systems, Kelvin Hughes has been contracted by French company AVON Communications to supply five of its SBS-700 radar systems for integration with the Marseille Fos Port Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS). The SBS-700 is specifically designed to meet the requirements of a Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) system as defined in IALA recommendation V-128 and each X-band system supplied will feature a combination of the SBS 700-1, single transceiver, and the SBS 700-2, dual redundant transceiver. Incorporating an enhanced magnetron transmitter, the SBS-700 features a high dynamic range, a low-noise front end and a FET modulator.

Ultra Electronics announces that its Sonar Systems business, based in Greenford, Middlesex, has been awarded a £9.5m extension to contract for the supply of sonobuoys for the Royal Navy’s Merlin Maritime Patrol Helicopter which will be executed throughout 2017. This contract between Ultra and the MoD for sonobuoy engineering, manufacture, logistics and support, ensures the Royal Navy maintains a persistent Anti-Submarine Warfare surveillance capability against hostile submarines. It also allows Ultra to support future technology capability insertion and international collaboration.
