11 May 15. Indra to deliver satcom terminals for German Navy. Spanish electronics firm Indra has secured an order to deliver five satellite communications (satcom) terminals for the German Navy’s Braunschweig-class (K-130) corvettes. Under this contract, the company will provide its satellite communications solution TNX-100 terminal for the navy. Indra, along with Atlas Elektronik, received this contract in a request for proposals involving several different European manufacturers of satcom terminals. As part of the three-year project, the company will also be responsible for manufacturing, integration and testing, electronic documentation, and training for crews. With two stabilised 1.5m-diameter dishes, TNX-100 terminal will be capable of simultaneously transmitting and receiving up to 4Mbps. According to Indra, this satcom solution has already been applied in several of Spain’s vessels, such as the Juan Carlos I strategic projection ship and the F-100 frigates. The new contract is the latest in a series of projects that started in 2003 to implement electronic defence systems in German Navy corvettes. Indra has already equipped the K-130s with an advanced system that is capable of detecting radar signals and identifying those that pose a threat for the platform. The company previously secured orders to equip the F-122 frigates and the six Elbe-class replenishment ships with these types of systems, as well as orders to provide satcom terminals for Germany’s U212-class submarines. 10 May 15. Turkey signs $1bn deal for Landing Platform Dock. The Turkish government announced it signed a nearly $ 1bn deal with a local shipyard to produce the country’s first Landing Platform Dock (LPD). Turkey’s procurement agency, the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (SSM), said SSM and Sedef, a Turkish shipyard, agreed to pen the deal after contract negotiations. SSM announced in December 2013 that it selected Sedef for the ambitious naval program. In the LPD contract, Sedef is partnered with Spain’s Navantia. The planned amphibious assault vessel will carry a battalion-sized unit of 1,200 troops and personnel, eight utility helicopters, three unmanned aerial vehicles and transport 150 vehicles, including battle tanks. It also will have an aircraft platform for vertical take off and landing. A ski jump at the front of the deck can be used to launch fighter aircraft. Industry sources estimate the cost of the contract at close to $1bn. SSM said the 231-meter-long vessel will be completed by 2021. The LPD will deploy on the Aegean, the Black, and the Mediterranean seas, as well as on Turkish Navy’s operations on the Atlantic and Indian oceans. Turkey will be the third operator in the world of this ship type after Spain and Australia. (Source: Defense News)
