11 Mar 15. Germany orders vehicle protection jammers from Airbus. Airbus Defence and Space has agreed a deal to supply electronic jamming systems to the German Armed Forces. The contract has been awarded by the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support. Airbus will supply 36 of its vehicle protection jammers-R6 (VPJ-R6) for integration on the German Armed Forces’ protected vehicles. The VPJ-R is a next-generation, vehicle protection jamming device that is designed to augment the protection of armoured vehicles against attacks by radio-controlled improvised explosive devices, which remain one of the major threats in asymmetric warfare. Using the company’s new SMART Responsive jamming technology, the device detects and classifies radio signals intended to ignite a roadside bomb, and transmit the signals tailored to the hostile frequency band in less than a millisecond, interrupting the connection. Driven by a new digital receiver and signal processing technologies, the system can detect and jam up to 750,000 million threat signals a second in all common frequency bands. The quick reaction time prevents loss of output power inherent in legacy barrage jammers and concentrates the jamming power on the detonation signal’s specific frequency, instead of being distributed over the whole frequency range. In addition, the VPJ-R reduces impact on friendly force radio communication, ensuring reliable command and control in the theatre. Airbus has not disclosed the delivery schedule and the type of vehicles to be outfitted with the jammer. (Source: army-technology.com)
11 Mar 15. BAE Systems Hägglunds and the Netherlands MoD have signed a contract for a mid-life upgrade (MLU) of the Dutch fleet of 95 Bv206 vehicles. The upgrade includes replacement of the engine, transmission, tracks, electrical systems and the renovation of other sub-systems. The contract with the Netherlands includes the delivery of one prototype, as well as six pre-series vehicles, with an option for a further 88 vehicles. The first seven vehicles will be upgraded at the BAE Systems Hägglunds facility in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden. The following 88 vehicles will be upgraded in the Netherlands in close cooperation with the customer. (Source: ASD Network)
10 Mar 15. Ricardo-AEA to provide 24/7 chemical risk support for UK Ministry of Defence. Ricardo-AEA’s chemical risk practice, the National Chemical Emergency Centre (NCEC), has won a three year contract to provide the UK’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) with emergency telephone advice – the contract includes global, multilingual support 24 hours a day, seven days a week as well as access to the NCEC’s hazardous chemicals database. The MoD handles and transports various chemicals, such as fuel, as part of its work around the world on a daily basis. Through its emergency telephone advice service, the NCEC will provide the MoD with global comprehensive support, enabling it to appropriately respond to chemical emergencies such as a spill or exposure. This support builds on the NCEC’s existing relationship with the MoD and will ensure that MoD staff receive immediate advice from trained chemists wherever they are operating. In addition to the emergency support, the NCEC will manage the MoD’s Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for the chemicals it uses. This will ensure SDS information is kept up to date in order to safely handle and store chemicals on MoD sites and in transport. In the event of an emergency, fire services will use the SDS to respond to incidents. Dangerous good and chemical training will also be provided by
