17 Nov 14. L-3 TRL Technology has been awarded the Medium Weight Electronic Surveillance Capability (MWESC) contract from the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD). The capability will provide the UK Armed Forces with a modular and scalable land and littoral tactical electronic warfare solution able to support expeditionary operations. The L-3 TRL solution is based on the company’s Military Off-The-Shelf (MOTS) networked tactical Electronic Warfare (EW) capability, which incorporates a fully integrated range of fused sensors and effectors, providing capabilities for Electronic Support Measures (ESM), Electronic Attack (EA), Integrated Electronic Warfare Command & Control (IEW C2) and secure IP-based communications. L-3 TRL’s Modular Electronic Warfare System (MEWS) forms the basis of the ESM component of the overall solution, which is supplemented by state-of-the-art situational awareness software technology provided by product partner QinetiQ. L-3 TRL’s new BROADSHIELD® MCS EA solution provides the additional EA capability to effectively manage and exploit the EM spectrum. Teaming partners with L-3 TRL for this new contract include Frazer-Nash Consultancy, Kongsberg and QinetiQ.

16 Nov 14. Poland orders 120 mm tank ammunition. The Polish Armament Inspectorate signed a contract with MESKO on 12 November for 120 mm anti-tank rounds for its Leopard 2 main battle tanks (MBTs). In total, Poland ordered 13,000 cartridges 120 mm armour-piercing, fin-stabilised discarding sabot with tracer (APFSDS-T) worth PLN240m (USD13.17m) to be delivered from 2015 to 2017. This supplements a contract with MESKO signed on 28 September for 14,000 high-explosive (HE) 120 mm ammunition worth PLN114.4m to be delivered from 2014 to 2017. Both the APFSDS-T and HE cartridges are to be manufactured in Poland by a MESKO subsidiary in Pionki (the former ZPS Pionki factory). (Source: IHS Jane’s)

18 Nov 14. SEA to supply communication systems for UK submarines. SEA has been awarded a contract by BAE Systems to deliver external communications systems (ECS) for integration into the UK Royal Navy’s submarine fleet. The £23m agreement, which involves detailed design and long-lead procurement, covers the initial part of the two-phased project. Based on open, modular and secure architecture with better remote control capabilities, the ECS is aimed at offering a complete-networked capability above and below the water. 19 Nov 14. Thales has been selected to upgrade the IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) transponders in service with the French armed forces. Thales has been awarded the contract to upgrade the IFF systems in service with the French armed forces to the latest standards: Mode 5 (the new secure standard for military use), Mode S (the latest civil standard) and the collaborative airspace surveillance standard ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast). The contract includes around 300 IFF units for helicopters, combat aircraft, transport aircraft, maritime patrol aircraft, surface ships and submarines operated by French forces. Aircraft equipped with IFF systems meeting the latest NATO and ICAO standards are authorised to fly unrestricted in civil and military airspace. Worldwide, Thales has supplied over 19,000 IFF units for more than 100 types of aircraft, vehicles and naval vessels.
