16 Jul 14. AgustaWestland has signed a contract with the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) valued at £90m to integrate, test and install the Future Anti-Surface Guided Weapon (FASGW) Heavy and Light missile systems onto 28 Royal Navy AW159 Wildcat helicopters. The contract award was announced at the Farnborough International Air Show by Philip Dunne MP, Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology. The two missiles are the MBDA FASGW(Heavy)/ANL (Future Anti Surface Guided Weapon (Heavy)/ Anti Navire Léger) and the Thales Light Multirole Missile (LMM) (FASGW (Light)). Both will be integrated onto the AW159 Wildcat to give it the ability to attack a wide range of surface targets ranging from small high speed surface craft up to large surface vessels such as corvettes, as well as coastal and land targets. The AW159 Wildcat will be able to carry up to four launchers, two per weapon carrier, each with up to five LMM missiles, or up to four FASGW(H)/ANL missiles with two on each weapon carrier. It will also be able to carry a mixed load of LMM launchers and FASGW(H)/ANL missiles for maximum mission flexibility.

15 Jul 14. BAE Systems has been awarded a £72m contract by the UK’s Ministry of Defence, (MOD) to de-risk E-Scan radar development for the Royal Air Force’s fleet of Eurofighter Typhoons. The three-year contract, named the E-Scan Extended Assessment Phase (EAP) will look specifically at the UK’s capability requirements for an E-Scan radar. The activity will inform the UK MOD’s procurement process, ahead of the award of a full scale development contract. The EAP will consist of several work packages including a Typhoon flight test of a prototype UK E-Scan radar and ground testing at BAE System’s Electronic Warfare Test Facility at Warton, Lancashire.

16 Jul 14. Finmeccanica – Selex ES to provide RF Jamming for Royal Air Force. Finmeccanica – Selex ES has been awarded a multi-million Euro contract to design, develop and deliver a Common Jamming Pod (CJP) for use with the Royal Air Force (RAF). The Common Jamming Pod will restore and sustain the RF self-protection capability of the Tornado GR Mk4 through to the end of its operational life. The programme is based on the fast-track rework of existing Skyshadow-2 pods to meet current and anticipated radar threats. The CJP will retain the distinctive outline of the Skyshadow pod, but an overhaul will take place within the shell. Enhancements will include a replacement of the entire receiver chain, the introduction of a digital control unit and a digital techniques generator as well as an update to the TWT transmitters. In addition, two Towed Radar Decoys, (TRDs) identical to those currently in service with the Eurofighter Typhoon, will be incorporated into the rear of the pod. This fast-track development is achievable due to Finmeccanica – Selex ES’s previous research and development work which sought to identify, integrate and de-risk key technologies necessary to realise a follow-on of the Skyshadow pod. Flight trials are scheduled for late 2014, with delivery and initial operating capability on the front-line planned for late 2015.
