26 Jun 14. Babcock has been awarded a seven year contract by the UK Ministry of Defence to support the Shaman shipborne maritime Communications Electronic Support Measures (CESM) system and infrastructure. The Shaman Infrastructure and Support Contract (SISC) is one element of the overall programme to deliver the Shaman CESM system into service and provide through-life support. Under the contract, Babcock will deliver infrastructure upgrades to the existing CESM shore support sites at the Fleet Intelligence Centre (FIC) and Maritime CESM Calibration Facility (MCCF), and provide Contractor Logistic Support (CLS) to the Shaman system on Type 45 destroyers. In delivering SISC, Babcock will provide the MoD’s Joint Electronic Surveillance (JES) Delivery Team (DT) with access to a proactive specialist CESM support team including project management, Integrated Logistics Support (ILS), installation and design personnel experienced in delivering CESM contracts such as COBLU and Eddystone. The team will implement measures to improve service delivery and apply existing experience in supporting Argon ST’s highly classified systems to meet operational availability.

23 Jun 14. The UK’s Ministry of Defence has awarded BAE Systems a £70m contract to manage the support, maintenance and upgrade of the Type 45 Destroyers at Portsmouth Naval Base and on all their operations in the UK and globally. The contract will sustain 100 roles at BAE Systems in Portsmouth and is due to commence in July 2014 and run until the end of November 2016. The contract underlines BAE Systems’ capability in servicing and upgrading the Royal Navy’s fleet. The Company currently services the Royal Navy’s four River Class Vessels under a £22M contract awarded last year and services all Type 23 ships based at Portsmouth in addition to managing HM Portsmouth Naval Base for the Royal Navy.

26 Jun 14. GE to power UK Royal Navy’s Type 26 frigates. BAE Systems has awarded a design, development and assessment (DDA) contract to GE’s Power Conversion unit for the provision of low-noise, electrical-drive systems. which will be used to power the UK Royal Navy’s future Type 26 global combat ships (GCS). The electric propulsion system from GE would enable the destroyers to operate on an electric-drive system when at low speed, while consuming power from the gas turbine when cruising at high speed.
GE’s selection forms part of a UK Ministry of Defence programme that is aimed at updating and modernising its ageing destroyer fleet. The existing Type 23 frigates are to be replaced by the Type 26 versions by the next decade. (Source: naval-technology.com)

20 Jun 14. UK selects BAE to study Brimstone 2-Typhoon integration. The UK MoD has awarded a contract to BAE Systems to support the integration of the Brimstone 2 air-to-surface missiles onto the Eurofighter Typhoon multi-role combat aircraft. Under the terms of the £5m study contract, the company will deliver an effective route to the UK Royal Air Force (RAF) for equipping the Typhoons with MBDA Brimstone 2 missile by 2018.

The RAF aims to integrate Brimstone 2 capabilities in Typhoon before the retirement of the Panavia Tornado GR.4 in 2019. BAE will transition the Dual Mode Brimstone (DMB) capability to Typhoon utilising the Brimstone 2 missile; Brimstone 2 is an upgraded version of the DMS Brimstone weapon.
