22 May 14. Exelis was awarded two contracts by General Dynamics UK to support U.K. Ministry of Defence tactical communications modernization and logistics, supply and support for existing tactical radios. The Exelis work will support General Dynamics’ recently announced contract award from the MoD valued at $617m. The first award is a five-year contract to provide post-engineering design services for VHF and UHF radios manufactured by Exelis for the U.K. Bowman team. Exelis was the manufacturer of those radios as part of the General Dynamics U.K.-led Bowman program. The second contract is a five-year contract for logistics, supply and support of current tactical radios fielded as part of the Bowman program. This support will include replacements and repairs of existing radios currently being used by the MoD. (Source: Yahoo!/BUSINESS WIRE)

21 May 14. The Manufacturing Technology Centre has been chosen for a major Ministry of Defence project. Coventry’s Manufacturing Technology Centre has been chosen for a major Ministry of Defence project. The Ansty Park-based facility has been providing engineering support to Lockheed Martin to enhance the British Army’s Warrior tracked vehicle family. Experts at the Manufacturing Technology Centre were contracted to help in the development of the turret machining process during the initial phase of the MoD’s Warrior Capability Sustainment Programme. The project is designed to extend the life of the army vehicle and the MTC’s specific responsibilities involved the design of tooling and machining processes for the turret. 20 May 14. Millog to supply target acquisition sensors to the Finnish Defence Forces. The Finnish Defence Forces and Millog Oy have signed an agreement on target acquisition sensors. The value of the contract is 26.8m euros (incl. VAT). The deliveries of the Millog LISA sensors and accessories will take place in 2014-2017. The sensors, based on uncooled thermal imaging technology will be manufactured by Millog in Finland. Millog LISA Hand-Held Target Acquisition System is a monocular thermal imager with capability for range measurement and target acquisition. LISA’s main features are an uncooled thermal imager, optical day channel, eyesafe laser rangefinder, digital magnetic compass, GPS, wireless connection, C4I connectivity and image capture with target information. Being lightweight, accurate and user-friendly, LISA is designed for use for forward observation squads, infantry and special units.

18 May 14. Airbus awards A330 MRTT conversion contract. Airbus has awarded Iberia a contract to convert three civilian Airbus A330 aircraft into military MRTT air-to-air refuelling aircraft in the hope of quickly meeting any future order for the type. (Source: IHS Jane’s)
22 May 14. Saab has signed an agreement with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to provide advanced aerial target services to the Swedish Armed Forces. The agreement will come into effect during the period 2014–2020 and is valued at SEK 300m. The agreement entails that Saab will continue supplying aerial target services with aircraft especially equipped for the various types of exercises required by the Swedish Armed Forces. Operations bring a comprehensive undertaking with Saab chiefly providing EW – Electronic Warfare and target towing flight operations. Also included within the framework of the agreement is maintenance and modification of aircraft and equipment.
