04 Feb 14. Veterans in need of housing support will be able to benefit from up to £40m being ploughed in to life changing accommodation initiatives across the country, the Defence Minister Anna Soubry has announced during a visit to Blind Veterans UK. The new funding, guaranteed through LIBOR fines imposed on banks, has doubled the total amount the Government has given to Armed Forces and veterans charities through this scheme. Once again this demonstrates the Government’s continued commitment to our Armed Forces, veterans and their families. Around 2,300 veterans are already benefiting from the £35m given out to LIBOR projects over the last year. Thousands more are expected to benefit from this additional £40m which will help charities build new homes, buy new accommodation or spruce up old facilities. Projects are expected to include homeless hostels and half-way houses for veterans who have fallen on hard times, supported housing for the wounded, injured and sick and long-term care homes.

General Dynamics European Land Systems previously delivered 290 DURO GMTF vehicles to the Swiss Army during the period 2008 to 2010. The 130 additional DURO GMTF vehicles will be manufactured at the General Dynamics European Land Systems-Mowag facility in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland, with deliveries to take place between 2015 and 2017. Several other Swiss companies will contribute to this high-value program for the Swiss Army. (Source: Open Source Information Report)

03 Feb 14. The Royal Navy’s Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers will benefit from new helicopter-borne early warning systems 18 months earlier than planned in a move that will save taxpayers £22m. Following the renegotiation of the Aircraft Carrier contract to deliver savings for taxpayers, the Defence Secretary has accelerated the Crowsnest Airborne Surveillance and Control programme to ensure it is operational by 2019. Crowsnest uses high power radar to provide long-range air, maritime and land tracking capabilities and will be an integral part of future carrier operations. The Crowsnest system will be fitted to the Royal Navy’s fleet of upgraded Merlin Mk2 helicopters. The shorter delivery time for Crowsnest will lead to a significant reduction in costs as specialist industry personnel will be required for a shorter period of time. Lockheed Martin UK, which designs the Merlin helicopters, has been awarded a £24m contract to run a competition to design, develop and demonstrate Crowsnest.
